"Det är fruktansvärt det som hänt. Jag bor alldeles här borta" : En kvalitativ studie om mordet på Lisa Holm i Aftonbladet och Skaraborgs Allehanda

Karlsson, Amanda, Rockler, Emelie January 2016 (has links)
The aim of the study was to examine how two newspapers covered the murder of Lisa Holm. The questions examined were: How are Lisa Holm, the perpetrator and the local community represented and what are the differences and similarities between the local news paper, Skaraborgs Allehanda, and the tabloid, Aftonbladet?  We made a discourse analysis of 13 news articles from six different time periodes. The result shows that the victim is represented as an innocent, young girl who is described as good, happy and perfect. The local news paper represents her as a part of the local community and the tabloid is highlighting attributes that people can identify with. The perpetrator is represented as an evil and callous foreign in both newspapers, but Aftonbladet also represents him as a usual person. Skaraborgs Allehanda focus on his guilt of the murder. The local community is represented as a certain group with common emotions who is also the light in the darkness. They share the grief and help each other to process it. The tabloid focus on highlighting the geografic closeness between the people in the articles and the murder. In Aftonbladet, the local community is also described as a dangerous place. Our study shows that the distance between the newspaper and the crime scene affect the representations of the people involved.

Buried in the backyard: a study of locally generated content in small U.S. newspapers

Funk, Marcus James 26 October 2010 (has links)
Locally generated content comprises nearly 80% of front page content for most American newspapers, with Associated Press and other wire service content comprising between 15% and 20% across various circulation categories. However, newspapers with daily circulation between 30,000 and 50,000 provide a sharp distinction – a “curve” or “groove” – publishing an average of barely 60% locally generated content on their front page, pulling nearly 40% from wire services. The anomaly declines somewhat for publications with daily circulation between 50,000 and 100,000. This statistical content analysis of 42 American newspapers of diverse circulation sizes also reveals a universal focus on domestic politics, which comprises nearly a third of all locally generated and wire content, and reveals key commonalities across circulation categories and regional boundaries. / text

Unknown Date (has links)

An Analysis of the Dallas Morning News Used Car Advertisements of Twenty Automobile Dealers for the Month of April

Evans, Ralph L. 08 1900 (has links)
"It is the purpose of this study to determine the type of appeal, the size and cost, the plan of insertions, and the extent superlatives are used in The Dallas Morning News used car advertisements of twenty automobile dealers during the month of April. Fourteen advertising appeals were used by the twenty automobile dealers advertising in The Dallas Morning News in the month of April. The fourteen appeals used were: efficiency, friendliness, style, curiosity, safety, convenience-comfort, economy reliability-reputation, durability-dependability, social distinction, fear-caution, ambition, pleasure, and family affection. The economy was the one most used appeal by the dealer. As shown in Table 12, the number of advertising appeals used corresponds or exceeds very little the total number of advertising insertions. Excepting one case, the dealers place the largest advertisements in the Sunday paper. The general procedure was that of placing large advertisements in the Sunday paper and smaller ones throughout the week. The total cost for the twenty automobile dealers was $6,452.08. The total advertising cost per dealer ranged from $38.20 to $1613.81. Only nine of the twenty dealers used superlatives in advertising during the month of April. The nine dealers used nine different superlatives for a total of 281 times."--leaves 1 and 35.

How important is the weight? A quantitative and qualitative study of Expressen’s and Aftonbladet’s presentation of weight, appearance and health

Jernstig, Embla, Wikström, Mikaela January 2017 (has links)
In media we often see articles about how to lose weight, what we shouldn’t like about our bodies and how to get rid of these so called problems. In this essay we examine how weight is portrayed in Sweden’s two largest evening papers, Expressen and Aftonbladet. The purpose of the essay is to see how Swedish evening papers portray weight in relation to health, appearance, and diet. We have used a quantitative content analysis combined with a qualitative critical discourse analysis to examine this. The two methods combined strengthen the validity and reliability in our results. We examine articles from the newspapers from the years of 1996, 2006 and 2016 to be able to see the differences between these years. Through the quantitative content analysis, we found many interesting patterns. Some of the most important findings are that weight often is portrayed in a way of change and not as something static. A loss of weight is in a majority of the articles described as something positive, whereas to gain weight is described as a problem and something negative. We have also found interesting results about gender. Women take the roll of a private person in a majority of the cases. The role of the expert in the articles have changed from a majority of men to a majority of women. Dieting is portrayed as something typically feminine. In the discourse of weight there seems to be at strong connection between the skinny body, happiness and health whereas the fat body is submissively connected to sickness and ill-health. Our bodies seem to be looked at like a project to be taken care of, in order to fit in to the bodily-norms. If someone fits in to the norm they get values in life in return. Our conclusion is that stereotypical norms of the skinny body and the good in loss of weight is reproduced in Expressen and Aftonbladet, and that this haven’t changed over time. We argue that this can lead to consequences in peoples lifes and a discrimination to certain groups in the society.

The tabloid media is trying to attract potential readers, especially graphic design titles, while serious media put more accent on the content of the title message. The tabloid headlines have characteristic color caps and overhang headling to other cell components. Headlines of serious media are printed in black and stands on the site separately. One of the differences between tabloid headlines and serious media is their length - tabloid usually decide for shortes ones than the serious media. Basis subtitles should form a neutral literary language, yet there are presented present colloquial expressions in the headlines of tabloids and media. Tabloid headlines include expressive sign unlike the serious media headlines. Statements in the headlines are assertive and have interrogative and directive use. The tabloid media uses interrogative function in headlins more than the...

XML Process Modeling for Disruptive Change Planning: A Case Study of Newspaper Circulation Processes

Dafnis, Bill 01 January 2008 (has links)
Disruptive change transforms existing organizational processes. Newspaper organizations such as Orlando Sentinel Communications (OSC) tend to resist process change. As with most newspaper companies in the United States, OSC management was confronted with unprecedented disruptive change and challenges by the accelerated evolution of its business models and processes. This investigation identified and modeled OSC circulation processes to support disruptive change initiatives. The XML Process Definition Language (XPDL) is an XML specification and process modeling solution developed by the Workflow Management Coalition (WFMC) designed to exchange workflow process semantics and graphics. This investigation focused on developing an XPDL process model of OSC circulation processes to address process transformations inherent to disruptive change. The method was a case study of OSC circulation processes through the System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) framework to develop a reproducible XPDL process model for OSC to use in planning for disruptive change. The investigation found that XPDL to be well-suited as the language for expressing workflow models to plan, align, and implement processes that anticipate disruptive change. The results of this research also confirmed that organizational values, workflow activities, and subflows play a prominent role in an incumbent organization's response to disruptive change. Finally, this study established that process model metainformation associated with workflow activities, transitions, and resources are core attributes in planning for disruptive change.

Varning för clown : En kvalitativ textanalys av tidningsmediers framställning av clownattackerna i Sverige 2016 / Beware of clowns : A qualitative textual analysis of newspapermedia's representation of the clown attacks in Sweden in 2016

Ekryd, Lovisa, Einebrant, Evelyn January 2017 (has links)
In the fall of 2016 the words “creepy clown hysteria” or “clown attacks” became regular to the Swedish daily press. The phenomenon of clowns attacking people and scaring people became media's head priority during approximately two weeks. The focus of this thesis is to establish who gets to talk in the articles and how these people are represented. The articles are found in the biggest night and morning newspapers, Aftonbladet and Dagens Nyheter. The theory for this thesis is called media logics and includes seven directions, these are; sharpening, simplification, polarization, intensification, personification, concreteness and stereotyping. A qualitative text analysis is used as method for this thesis regarding text. The results of the thesis are that there is an underrepresentation of witnesses, clowns and victims in the texts and an overrepresentation of people with authority like polices. The clowns are represented as evil and horrifying while the polices are shown as trustworthy and honest people.
