Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Study of the Planar Charge Symmetry under Pressure in High-Temperature Superconducting cuprates: Detection of charge ordering in the CuO2 planeReichardt, Steven 21 March 2018 (has links)

Using Ordering Theory to Establish Student Knowledge LevelsByers, Celina 08 1900 (has links)
The problem under investigation in this research is the development of a general approach that will establish a students knowledge level so that the student's learning can be optimized by beginning it at the most effective point. In preparation for this study, an active test with an acceptable CT3 homogeneity index was found. Two computer programs, RightOrder and MathTest, were written in Visual Basic. The latter administers the test, producing a file or responses that serves as input for the former, which performs the calculations and matrix manipulation necessary to determine the CT3 of a set of test items and construct a difficulty strata scale. The test was administered twice to the same population, the first time in the original item order. In the second administration, one item from each successive level of difficulty, beginning with the easiest, was given until the respondent answered incorrectly. Then all the remaining items were presented in order of difficulty, beginning with the easiest. The three hypothesis of this study are (a) the difficulty strata scale generated from the computerized retest, using a z-score to be determined as critical value, is congruent with that derived from the analysis done on the data of the first application of the computerized test, (b) the time spent to establish the knowledge level is shorter than the time spent taking the full test, and (c) the test, reordered according to ordering theory principles, is an accurate method of establishing a student's knowledge level.

Interactions and phase stability in Ni-rich binary alloysHe, Shuang January 2016 (has links)
Ni-based superalloys are the important materials for gas turbines in advancedaeroplane engines . The addition of refractory elements to these superalloys, such as rhenium and tungsten, can significantly improve the hightemperatureperformance by so-called solid-solution hardening. Although thestrengthening effect of refractory elements in Ni-based superalloys have beenknown for a long time, the effective interactions among alloying componentsas well as the atomic ordering in the alloy systems are still under investigationand even under debate. In this work, we study these interactions and thisordering for two binary alloys, Ni-rich Ni-Re and Ni-rich Ni-W, by means ofab initio simulations and statistical mechanics simulations based on the IsingHamiltonian. For the Ni-rich Ni-Re alloys, we show that the effective cluster interactionsvary substantially depending on the temperature, concentration of the componentsand the magnetic state of the matrix. The strain-induced interactionshave large contribution to the nearest-neighbor pair-interactions and some multisitecluster-interactions in the ferromagnetic and nonmagnetic states. Theordering tendency of binary Ni-Re alloy systems can be predicted in terms ofordering energy and enthalpy of formation. We show that the D1a orderedstructure should be stable at the concentration of 20 at.% Re in the Ni-rich Ni–Re alloy system. The Monte Carlo simulations of Ni-Re random alloysshow the existence with the D1a-Ni4Re ordered structure at low temperatures. We also calculated lattice parameters for different compositions of Ni-rich Ni-W alloys, and we find that lattice parameters of random Ni-W alloys increaselinearly with the concentration of W. This is in good agreement withthe Vegard’s law predictions and experimental data. We investigated phasestability of Ni-rich Ni-W alloys in terms of the enthalpies of formation andordering energies. We find the chemical pair interactions are sensitive to themagnetic state and concentration. The calculated strain-induced interactionsare quite large for the first coordination shell, which is due to a large sizemismatch of Ni and W. Taking local lattice relaxation into account, the Ni-Wsystems were modeled by Monte Carlo method. The D1a-Ni4W ordered structurecan be observed up to 22 at.% W. In higher concentrations of W, in ourMC calculations, the DO22-Ni3W and Pt2Mo-Ni2W ordered structures can beobserved in Ni-25 at.% W alloy and Ni-33 at.% W alloy, respectively. / <p>QC 20160721</p>

Optimal Ordering Policies for Supply Networks with DisruptionsJose Caiza (15426359) 08 May 2023 (has links)
<p>As the economy recovered with the winding down of the pandemic, businesses with complex supply chains could not bring their inventories back to optimal levels as their production was susceptible to disruption due to supply outages. Deriving optimal ordering policies as a way to mitigate the impact of production disruption represents a challenge in multi-stage decision problems given the complexity of the network and the uncertainty in the demand.</p>
<p><br></p>
<p>In the first part of the thesis, we formulate a stochastic inventory control problem for a general supply network model. Using the Bellman’s recursion and properties of the cost function at each stage, we characterize the optimal request decision as a threshold policy where the threshold computation is based on the marginal cost. Lastly, we validate that the policy developed minimizes the inventory cost and meets an exogenous random demand. However, the policy does not guarantee that the inventory level for each firm satisfies the constraints when a supply disruption occurs in the network.</p>
<p><br></p>
<p>In the second part of the thesis, we consider a serial network in which firms engage in production subject to disruption risk and they look to maximize their profit. We propose an algorithm to characterize a stationary optimal policy based on the closed-form solutions obtained from a discounted finite horizon problem for profit maximization. Finally, by computing the policy proposed as a function of the tier’s location and its disruption probability, we provide simulation results of the disruption effect in the supply network.</p>
