Electrophysiological Studies on the Impact of Repeated Electroconvulsive Shocks on Catecholamine Systems in the Rat Brain

Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) effectively treats depression by administration of repeated seizure-inducing electrical stimuli. Sprague-Dawley rats were administered 6 electroconvulsive shocks (ECS) over 2 weeks, and in vivo single unit extracellular electrophysiological activity was recorded after 48 hours. Overall firing activity in the locus coeruleus and ventral tegmental area was unchanged, suggesting the therapeutic efficacy of ECT may not be attributed to increased norepinephrine and dopamine release. There were more spontaneously active neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc), indicating greater dopamine tone in the nigrostriatal motor pathway, which may contribute to alleviation of psychomotor retardation. In the facial motor nucleus (FMN), locally administered norepinephrine, but not serotonin, facilitated greater glutamate-induced firing, which may contribute to improved facial motricity. Current results indicate that repeated ECS enhances postsynaptic norepinephrine neurotransmission in the FMN and SNc dopamine neurotransmission, which could represent the mechanism behind the alleviation of depressive symptoms including psychomotor retardation.

Cabin environment and air quality in civil transport aircraft

The cabin environment of a commercial aircraft, including cabin layout and the quality of air supply, is crucial to the airline operators. These aspects directly affect the passengers’ experience and willing to travel. This aim of this thesis is to design the cabin layout for flying wing aircraft as part of cabin environment work, followed by the air quality work, which is to understand what effect the ECS can have in terms of cabin air contamination. The project, initially, focuses on the cabin layout, including passenger cabin configuration, seat arrangement and its own size due to the top requirements, of a conventional aircraft and further into that of a flying wing aircraft. The cabin work in respect of aircraft conceptual design is discussed and conducted by comparing different design approaches. Before the evaluation of cabin air quality, an overall examination of the main ECS components involved in the contaminants access will be carried on and, therefore, attempt to discover how these components influence the property of the concerned contaminants. By case study in the B767 ECS, there are some comments and discussions regarding the relationship between the cabin air contaminations and the passing by ambient environment. The thesis ends up with a conclusion explaining whether or not the contaminated air enters the occupants’ compartments on aircraft and proposing some approaches and engineering solutions to the continue research.

Theoretical Treatment of 3-phenylsubstituted Thiophenes and their Intrinsically Conducting Polymers

A series of 3-(p-X-phenyl) thiophene monomers (X= –H, –CH3, – OCH3, –COOC2H5, –COCH3,–NO2) was electrochemically polymerized to furnish polymer films that could be reversibly reduced and oxidized (n- and p-doped). The oxidation potentials of the monomers and formal potentials of the n- and p-doping processes of polymers were correlated with resonance and inductive effects of the substituents on the phenyl ring as well as the semiempirically calculated heats of formation of the monomer radical cations. Moreover, the oxidation potentials of the monomers were correlated with the ionization potentials of the monomers calculated using density functional theory. The reactivity for coupling reactions and the major regioselective products of the polymerization reaction of mono- and oligo-3-phenylthiophenes are inferred from the calculated lone electron spin densities of the respective radical cations. The ionization potentials, which correspond to the energies for generating radical cations during oxidative processes were estimated.

Scalability and Economy of Amazon Lambda, EKS, and ECS

Cloud computing is the current need and the futuristic strategy of many businesses. Economy and scalability are inevitable because they impact the flourishing of all online businesses. The objective of this study is to distinguish the differences between Amazon Lambda versus EKS and ECS using EC2 instances from the Economy and scalability perspectives. The study aims to give programmers without prior knowledge about the services an overall picture of their billing models, scalability,  and the goal each service is meant to deliver. A literature review was used to identify the related studies done earlier in this area of research. The data captured from the literature studies were enriched with an empirical study, namely, survey research  with semi-structured interviews. Snowballing was used to identify more interviewees with the help of the earlier selected respondents. After conducting the semi-structured online interviews with five participants, the recordings were transcribed. Finally, the Thematic Analysis approach was used to analyze the collected qualitative data from the transcripts. It was concluded that Lambda was useful for infrequent and minor workloads without long processing tasks, with a  free automatic and managed scalability. For websites doing massive processing or getting large requests constantly, EKS or ECS would be a better choice. However, ECS and EKS cost more than Lambda when working with smaller workloads. EKS has multi-direction scalability, making it more flexible than Lambda and ECS. However, this comes with additional costs and complexity, but it is cost-effective for bigger businesses. Ultimately, in real-world cloud architecture, it is relatively common to rely on a combination of cloud services to fulfill the economic or auto scalability objectives of a business instead of a single one.

Learned Helplessness in Rats: The Effects of Electroconvulsive Shock in an Animal Model of Depression

The response deficit following exposure to inescapable shock has been termed "learned helplessness." This experiment was designed (a) to determine whether learned helplessness following an inescapable footshock induction procedure extends to 48 hours, and (b) to test the hypothesis that electroconvulsive shock (ECS) reverses learned helplessness in rats. Subjects were tested for helplessness in a bar-press shock-escape task. Results indicated that helplessness was not present 48 hours after exposure to inescapable shock. A slight indication of helplessness was observed in the first 10 trials of the 60-trial task. In addition, ECS was shown to enhance performance in the test task; however, this facilitation effect was seen only in control animals that were not previously exposed to inescapable footshock.

Modeling and Simulation of novel Environmental Control System for a combat aircraft

The present thesis deals with the analysis of Environmental Control System (ECS) as a part of the aircraft conceptual design. The research focuses on developing methods for modelling, simulation and optimization of current and future cooling technologies suitable for aircraft applications. The work started with a pre-study in order to establish the suitability of different cooling technologies for ECS application. Therefore, five technologies namely, Bootstrap (BS), Reverse-Bootstrap (RBS), vapour cycle system (VCS), magnetic cooling (MC) and thermo-electric cooling (EC), were assessed from a theoretical point of view by the method of benchmarking. This resulted into the selection of three most suitable technologies that were further modelled and simulated in Dymola. In order to compare the optimum designs for each technology, the models were optimized using the modeFRONTIER software. The comparison was performed based on the optimum ratio of maximum power of cooling and minimum fuel penalty. The results showed that VCS has the “best” performances compared to BS and RBS. In addition to the active technologies, passive cooling methods such as liquid cooling by means of jet-fuel and poly-alpha-olefin were considered to address high heat transfer rates. In order to apply the cooling technologies in the ECS, concept system architectures were formulated using the functional analysis. This led to the identification of basic functions, components and sub-systems interaction. Based on the comparison carried out previously and the functional analysis, two ECS architectures were developed. Design optimization procedure was applied further in order to assess each concept and also to study the differences between the two concept architectures. The results depict the complex interaction of different key parameters of the architectures and their influence on the outcome. The study culminated with a proposed methodology for formulation of systems architecture using information from the optimization results and a robust functional analysis method. To sum up, the thesis proposes a simulation-based optimization method that allows inclusion of ECS system in aircraft conceptual design phase. The study also proves the complexity of the conceptual design stage for ECS architectures which highly influences the design of the combat aircraft.

Tracking and Serving Geolocated Ads, Load Balancing, and Scaling of Server Resources

This thesis explores the creation of a scaling, containerized, advertisement server that will be used by Gold Town Games AB to better integrate ads into their application(s). The server is built as a Docker image that will be used to create server instances on AWS Elastic Container Service for automatic scaling and server resource configuration. The server was created with the intention that GTG will have full control over what advertisements are shown in their application(s) and to seamlessly integrate sponsored logos onto jerseys or sports fields. This will not only serve as a source of income with advertisers paying for ad space, but it will also make the game elements more realistic as we have come to expect teams and stadiums to be sponsored and plastered with company logos. Another important part when displaying advertisement is to track statistics for the ads, since without a way to show advertisers that their ads are shown and that they are generating engagement it is very hard to sell the ad space. / Detta examensarbete utforskar skapandet av en skalbar, containerbaserad, reklamserver som kommer användas av Gold Town Games AB för att integrera reklam i deras applikation(er).
