Implementación de un Sistema de Seguridad y Salud Ocupacional en Minería Subterránea

Flores Quispe, Percy Gaspar 23 October 2013 (has links)

Rethinking the Response to Disaster Relief Housing

Swetnam, Heather 10 July 2012 (has links)
This thesis examines disaster-relief-housing and identifies some of the challenges faced by the traditional housing response. Focusing on relief efforts as a second responder, an alternative process for housing displaced populations is proposed and demonstrated through a specific proposal for disaster-relief-housing for the town of San Vicente, El Salvador. Working within the discipline of architecture, the proposed project will provide beneficiaries with an increased ability to cope in the face of disaster. It does so by design and implementation of self-build housing that transitions from a temporary to a permanent state/location, by using bamboo as a primary construction material, and by providing an adaptable solution that is environmentally and culturally responsive. The building of a community laundry facility by the affected population facilitates this process by serving both as a teaching and as an inspirational building for the use of bamboo in quality construction.

Development As Transformation: A Case Study Of Canadian Baptist Ministries' Holistic Approach To Faith-Based Community Development In The Usulután Region Of El Salvador

MacPhail, Sarah 06 December 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this research is to explore the use of a faith-based holistic approach to community development. The concept of transformation development will be explored through a case study of the community development work of Canadian Baptist Ministries (CBM) in the Usulután region of El Salvador – specifically sustainable agricultural production, provision of clean water, provision of safe housing, leadership training and Christian education. Transformational development attempts to partner religious mission and development in a holistic framework for practical application. Within this framework, the following study attempts to address the gap between theory and practice surrounding holistic approaches to faith-based development. This research project explores the role of religion in development; the evolution of perspectives on evangelism and social action; the emergence of transformational development and integral mission; and finally, a study of the impact and effectiveness of a holistic and transformational approach shown through the work of CBM.

Elektrifiering av jordbruksmaskin : Direktkoppling till solföljare och elnät / Electric conversion of an agricultural machine : Direct connection to solar trackers and the power grid

Lagnelöv, Oscar January 2014 (has links)
The agricultural sector is currently highly dependent on fossil fuels, with diesel being most prominent. There are however both historical and modern alternatives that have not been subject to enough evaluation to disregard them as suitable alternative. This report aims to theoretically investigate the feasibility of converting a conventional diesel driven tractor to run on electricity, delivered via a cable connected to either the main power grid or on-site electric production, such as photovoltaic. Delivering electricity to the machine via a cable is a method with historical roots in the early 20th century and in the present day mining industry. The economic and technological potential of the technique are evaluated, along with the examination of several different motor powers, voltages, losses and construction ideas. The report finds the technique to be both possible as well as long term economically and environmentally beneficial. To realise this method however, some deviations from the present methods of agricultural farming must be made, considering the more advanced driving patterns, the limited mobility and the requirement for extra driver awareness. Furthermore, this study finds further research in this field necessary, and the construction of a functional prototype highly desirable.

Rebel collectors: human rights and archives in Central America and the Human Rights Commission of El Salvador and the Resource Center of the Americas, 1978-2007

Stinnett, Graham 23 August 2010 (has links)
The invaluable historical records of human rights non-governmental organizations have contributed to the protection of human rights and important social changes (such as the abolition of slavery in the West) at the local, national, and global levels over the last 200 years. This thesis stresses the importance of these records creators and their records in a case study of two human rights non-governmental organizations that responded to human rights violations in El Salvador in the late twentieth century: Comision de Derechos Humanos de El Salvador (San Salvador) and the Resource Center of the Americas (Minneapolis). The other primary and related concern of this thesis is to emphasize the role of the archivist as social justice activist through his or her efforts to include in the archive evidence of marginalized voices that can widen our understanding of peoples' history. As archivists are active shapers of historical memory through archival practice, they must forge alliances with those in the human rights non-governmental sphere to further the contribution of archives to social justice. By actively engaging the world’s memory of the disenfranchised (the archive of justice) archives can play an increasingly important societal role.

Representing refugees: Canadian newspapers’ portrayals of refugees of El Salvador’s civil war, 1980 – 1992

Dubois, Danielle Jacqueline 11 September 2014 (has links)
During the civil war in El Salvador, approximately 38,000 Salvadorans came to Canada, making them the largest group of Latin American migrants to Canada in that era. The arrival of these Salvadoran refugees has received limited academic attention. My thesis examines how Salvadoran refugees to Canada were portrayed in Canadian newspapers. I specifically examine how Salvadorans were written about in the Globe and Mail, the Toronto Star and Montreal’s Gazette; I focus on three eras: 1980 to 1982, 1986 to 1987, and 1991 to 1992. I argue that, throughout these years, Canadian newspapers acted as discursive gatekeepers to the “imagined community” of Canada. Salvadoran refugees moved closer to this community, but were not granted full admittance.

Acceptability of nickel extraction between indigenous and non-indigenous communities of El Estor, Izabal, Guatemala

Baldetti Herrera, Carlos January 2006 (has links)
In 1971 the company Exmibal, called today CGN, got a concession for the extraction of nickel in El Estor. Ten years later, Exmibal cancelled its work. Now, Exmibal is trying to return to El Estor. The opinion of rural populations affected by this extraction was not clear. The purpose of this research was to determine and compare the level of acceptability of nickel extraction between the indigenous and non-indigenous communities. The level of acceptability was tested throughout eliciting cultural domains, and then comparing the level of acceptability using the Chi-Square test. The relation of this acceptability with locally perceived socioeconomic and environmental benefits and constraints was also identified. The elicitation of domains established the priority of water, animals, wood and trees for the communities, placing nickel extraction in fifth place of salience and relating it mostly with natural resources destruction, employment and land expropriation. Comparing the level of acceptability, indigenous communities do not accept the work of the Company while the non-indigenous community accepts it. / Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Management
