Analysis of dynamic loading behaviour for pavement on soft soil

The increasing need for regional development has led engineers to find safe ways to construct the infrastructure of transportation on soft soils. Soft soil is not able to sustain external loads without having large deformations. The geotechnical properties of soft soil which is known for its low bearing capacity, high water content, high compressibility and long term settlement as well. In pavement engineering, either highway or runway as an infrastructure, a pavement encompasses three important parts namely traffic load, pavement and subgrade. Traffic load generated from tire pressure of vehicle and/or airplane wheels are usually around 550 kPa even more on the surface of the pavement. Pavement generally comprises granular materials with unbounded or bounded materials located between traffic load and subgrade, distributing the load to surface of subgrade. One of the promising soil improvement techniques is a piled embankment. When geosynthetics layer is unrolled over piles, it is known as geosynthetics supported piled embankment. Particularly in deep soft soil, when piles do not reach a hard stratum due to large thickness of the soft soil, the construction is an embankment on floating piles. Furthermore, because of different stiffness between piles and subsoil, soil arching effect would be developed there. By using Finite Element analysis, some findings resulted from experimental works and several field tests around the world as field case studies are verified. Some important findings are as follows: the stress concentration ratio is not a single value, but it would be changed depending on the height of embankment, consolidation process of subsoil, surcharge of traffic load, and tensile modulus of geosynthetics as well. Ratio height of embankment to clear piles spacing (h/s) around 1.4 can be used as a critical value to distinguish between low embankment and high embankment. When geosynthetics is applied to reinforce a pavement/embankment, the vertical distance of geosynthetics layers and number of geosynthetics layers depend on the quality of pavement material. The lower layer of geosynthetics withstands a tensile stress higher than upper layer. Primary reinforcements for geosynthetics in piled embankments are located at span between piles with maximum strains at zones of adjacent piles. Traffic load that passes through on the surface of the pavement can reduce the soil arching, but it can be restored during the off peak hours. Settlements of embankments on floating piles can accurately be modelled using the consolidation calculation type, whereas the end-bearing piles may be used the plastic calculation type. Longer piles can be effectively applied to reduce a creep. By applying length of floating piles more than 20% of soft soil depth, it would have a significant impact to reduce a creep on a deep soft soil.

Viscoplastic modelling of embankments on soft soils

A major instrumented geosynthetic reinforced approach embankment was constructed to 5.5 m elevation above ground, with prefabricated vertical drains, over a soft compressible clay deposit at Leneghan, Newcastle, Australia in May 1995. The field monitoring of settlements for over six years shows that the embankment manifests significant creep. The instrumentation, field performance and the finite element analyses for predicting the long-term performance of this embankment are described in this thesis. The maximum settlement of 1.1 m was observed one year after the completion of construction. However, the embankment continued to settle at a rate of 0.4 mm/day for the next 5 years. The horizontal displacements of 0.09-0.14 m at various locations and the maximum reinforcement strains of 0.67% were recorded. A numerical model was developed to perform a fully coupled large deformation elasto-viscoplastic finite element analysis for this performance prediction based on creep model proposed by Kutter and Sathialingam (1992). The foundation soil was modelled with creep material behaviour using six noded linear strain triangular elements. A well-documented case history ??? Sackville embankment, New Brunswick, Canada was analysed using this model as a benchmark problem and the model was found to predict all the behaviour characteristics reasonably well. The results obtained from finite element analysis using this model are shown to be in reasonable agreement with the observed performance of Leneghans embankment in terms of settlements, horizontal displacements, excess pore pressures and geosynthetic strains. But, the prediction of settlements was less than satisfactory beyond April 1999. Finite element analyses were performed to study the sensitivity of this embankment behaviour on the variation of hydraulic conductivity values and geosynthetic reinforcement properties. This sensitivity study indicated that the kv variation, the kh/kv ratio and the nominal values of geosynthetic properties adopted in the benchmark analysis are reasonable enough for the long-term behaviour prediction.

La flore de l'interface route - champ cultivé : Influence des pratiques de gestion de la structure du paysage / The road-field boundary's vegetation : effect of management practices and landscape structure

Les bords de route constituent un des principaux habitats herbacés et linéaires des paysages agricoles, ils jouent le rôle de refuge pour différentes espèces et constituent aussi un habitat favorable pour des espèces adventices jugées problématiques. L’objectif de cette thèse est de mesurer les effets de la structure du paysage et des pratiques de gestion sur la flore de l’interface route – champ cultivé. Nos résultats suggèrent que les communautés végétales de l’interface ont une réponse temporellement décalée vis-à-vis des changements paysagers. L’étude de la végétation exprimée et de la dispersion des graines montre que la fauche tardive n’est pas le levier de gestion optimal pour favoriser la diversité végétale du bord de route, et que les pratiques de fauche influencent aussi la flore de la bordure intérieure du champ. Afin de limiter les influences croisées des pratiques de gestion, nous suggérons des stratégies réfléchies à l’échelle de l’interface route – champ. / Road verges constitute the main herbaceous and linear habitats of arable landscapes. They represent a refuge for different species, but also constitute a habitat for weeds considered problematic. The aim of this thesis was to measure the effects of landscape structure and management practices on the flora of the road-field boundary. Our results suggest that plant communities of road-field boundary have a time lagged response to landscape changes. The study of the vegetation and of seed dispersal showed that late mowing was not the optimal method to promote plant diversity on road verges and that mowing practices also influenced the flora of the inner field margin. To limit the cross-influence of management practices, we recommend well thought out strategies at the scale of the road-field boundary.

The use of waste tires in tropical soils requires prior knowledge of the properties and limitations of these materials. In this work, the results of an experimental program was devised to characterize the behavior of mixtures of waste tires and a lateritic soil. The residue used in this study is classified as tire buffings with an average size of 1.4 mm. The laboratory program included testing of particle size analysis, Atterberg limits, compaction, direct shear tests, permeability and confined compression tests with pure soil, pure tire and the mixtures. Proportions of 0% (pure soil), 10%, 20%, 40%, 50 % and 100% (pure tire) by weight were used. For the confining stress levels used in the study, the presence of tire residue provided a considerable increase in shear strength of the mixture. The maximum shear strength was obtained for a residue content of 40% by weight. Permeability tests on samples of waste under a confining stress of 100 kPa showed that the permeability increases significantly with increasing residue content until a residue content of 20%. The increase in permeability after that value showed to be negligible. Confined compression tests showed that the soil mixed with tire residue becomes more compressible than the pure soil. The secant constrained modulus (Msec) for the same vertical stress decreases with increasing percentage of residue. / Dentre as alternativas tecnol?gicas para a destina??o correta de pneus est? o uso na constru??o de aterros de misturas de solo e res?duo de pneus triturados. Hydro-mechanical analysis of breach processes due to levee failure

La rupture des barrages et des digues en terre est susceptible d’avoir des conséquences importantes en aval et dans les zones protégées. Nous avons mené une analyse hydro-mécanique de la formation et du développement de brèche destinée à améliorer la précision des approches actuelles. Dans le cas de l’érosion interne, un modèle d’agrandissement de conduit a été proposé pour modéliser la rupture des digues et barrages en terre par écoulement concentré. Ce modèle tient compte de l’érosion du sol par un écoulement de conduit turbulent. En ce qui concerne l’élargissement de la brèche, un modèle simple d’estimation de la longueur critique d’afouillement par “headcut” est proposé, fonction de la résistance du sol à la traction. Ce modèle est en bon accord avec les résultats numériques obtenus par équilibre limite. Un modèle simplifé pour la contrainte latérale sur les parois de la brèche a ensuite été proposé. Ce modèle tient compte des écoulements secondaires. Il montre que la contrainte latérale peut être plus grande que la contrainte de fond, suivant la situation. Finalement, une expérimentation de grande dimension de rupture de barrage par erosion de conduit a été modélisée avec le modèle d’érosion de conduit proposé, et quelques composantes des modèles d’élargissement de brèche proposés. L’élargissement de la brèche par paliers a été reproduite au début du processus. Les perspectives de validation et d'application des modèles proposés sont discutées. / The failure of embankment dams and levees can have serious consequence in floodplains. Hydro-mechanical analyses of the breach processes were conducted to develop the accurate estimation of the failure of embankment dams and levees. Considering the internal erosion process, a pipe enlargement model was proposed to simulate the failure of embankment dams and levees by concentrated leak erosion. In this model, the turbulent pipe flow with erosion mechanism was employed as well as the soil erosion law. Considering the breach enlargement process, a simple headcut migration model based on the soil tensile strength was presented to simulate the critical length of the headcut. Good agreements were obtained by comparing with the limit equilibrium numerical model. A simple model was eventually proposed to simulate the lateral shear stress on the breach sides, accounting for the secondary flow. The lateral shear stress can be greater than the bottom shear stress, depending on the situation. . Finally, a large-scale test of dam failure was simulated by using the pipe enlargement and some components of the breach widening models proposed. The simulation of the pipe enlargement process had good agreement with the measured data. Both of the pipe diameter and the discharge flow were well simulated. The stepwise enlargement of the breach width was also well simulated at the beginning of the breach widening process. Validation and application prospects of the proposed models are discussed.

The territorial unit is designed so that it respects surrounding housing development and improves transportation situation. It complies with transportation connection to future reconstruction of Zbrojovka premises, for which a proposal is being designed. The main target is to create a comfortable place to live in and to cover basic needs of every person, to design interesting places for relaxation, cultural life, provide sports facilities and raise number of job opportunities in this area. The goal of this project is also to create a diverse place for living. Its meant for people from different social backgrounds and for people who use cars both with low frequency or who use them on a daily basis.

Subject of the dissertation is a probability analysis on creation of embankment subsoil filtration deformations. Out of the broad topic of filtration deformations, the dissertation is focused at initiation of the process. At this phase, the overlying layers downstream of levee get uplifted, and eventually get breached. The process of downstream subsoil failure probability estimation is formulated using mathematical and statistical modelling. Within the scope of parametrical study the suggested method is applied onto a test environment. Results of the probability estimation are compared with results obtained using Limit state design method. The results of stochastic modelling can be used for improvement of Limit state design method precision.
