Use of Satellite Data for Prediction of Weather Impact on EO-Systems

To predict the performance of an electro-optical sensor system (EO-system) requires taking the weather situation into consideration. The possibility to use weather data from satellites instead of ground – and flight stations has been investigated. Nearly 170 satellites (about 10% of the functional satellites in orbit) were found to have atmosphere and weather monitoring. A method to select satellite data has been created based on three criteria: (1) the satellite should have a least one payload that measure a weather parameter for EO-system, (2) it should be possible to download data, free of charge, from the specified payload and (3) the satellite should cover geographical areas of interest for a potential user. The investigated performance property is the range, which is affected by many weather parameters, and focus has been on aerosols. The mean value for the aerosol extinction coefficient, for day- and nighttime conditions in December 2016, from the satellite CALIPSO’s lidar instrument Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) has been downloaded from www.earthdata.nasa.gov and implemented in a new developed application to predict the range for an EO-system. In the satellite data, from December 2016, it could be seen that the presence of aerosols, on a global scale, appears below 5 km and that the concentration of aerosols for nighttime condition is higher in local areas. For the test wavelength band of 0.9–2.5 µm, the application showed that the aerosol impact reduced the range by nearly 87%, if the EO-system was in a layer with aerosols. The application for the range prediction of EO-systems is on an early stage and need further development, especially its weather and scene parameters, to become a successful tool for a potential user in the future. / Att förutsäga prestandan hos ett elektro-optiskt sensorsystem (EO-system) kräver att man tar hänsyn till bland annat förhållandet i atmosfären. Möjligheten att använda väderdata från satelliter istället för mark- och flygstationer har undersökts. Det hittades nästan 170 satelliter (cirka 10% av de fungerande satelliterna i omloppsbana) med inriktning på atmosfär- och väderövervakning. En metod för att välja ut satellitdata har skapats som baseras på tre kriterier: (1) satelliten ska ha minst ett instrument som mäter en väderparameter för EO-system, (2) man ska, från internet, kunna ladda ner mätdata från det specifika instrumentet och (3) satelliten ska passera över ett område som är av intresse för en potentiell användare. Den prestandaegenskap som har undersökts är räckvidden, som påverkas av flera väderparametrar, där fokus har legat på inverkan från aerosoler. Medelvärdet för extinktionskoefficienten av aerosoler, för dag och natt i december 2016, från satelliten CALIPSO’s lidarinstrument Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization (CALIOP) laddades ner från www.earthdata.nasa.gov och användes i en nyutvecklad applikation för att förutsäga räckvidden hos ett EO-system. Från satellitens mätningar i december 2016 kunde man se att förekomsten av aerosoler mestadels befann sig, globalt sett, uppdelat i olika lager under 5 km höjd och att koncentrationen av aerosoler är högre på natten i lokala områden. Applikationens beräkningar visade att förekomsten av aerosoler påverkade räckvidden för exempel våglängdsbandet 0.9–2.5 µm med en försämring upp till 87% när EO-systemet befann sig i ett skikt av aerosoler. Applikationen för att förutsäga räckvidden hos EO-system är i dess begynnelse och kräver vidareutveckling av både väder- och scenparametrar för att det ska bli ett framgångsrikt verktyg.

Analizuojama asfalto dangos konstrukcijos elgsena Lietuvos klimato sąlygomis, įvertinant temperatūros ir drėgnio, kaip vienų iš svarbiausių klimato veiksnių, įtaką kelio asfalto dangos konstrukcijos stipriui. Pateikta krintančio svorio deflektometro matavimo metodikų apžvalga kitose šalyse. Atlikta temperatūros ir drėgnio kiekvienos dienos pokyčių analizė, įvertinant jų įtaką dangos konstrukcijai. Nustatyta kelio dangos stiprio ir Eo modulio priklausomybė nuo dangos temperatūros, matuojant kelio dangos įlinkius krintančio svorio deflektometru. Kai asfalto dangos stipris matuojamas skirtingu metų laiku ar įvairiu paros metu, tai Eo modulio reikšmės turi būti redukuojamos priimtai standartinei temperatūrai. Eksperimentiniame asfalto dangų konstrukcijų ruože atliktu tyrimu patikslintas temperatūrinis redukcijos koeficientas, kuris leidžia krintančio svorio deflektometru nustatytas asfalto dangos sluoksnių Eo modulio vertes redukuoti standartinei +20 °C temperatūrai. / This final master thesis performs asphalt pavement structural behavior of the Lithuanian climate conditions, taking into account the temperature and moisture, as one of the most important climatic factors that influence the road asphalt pavement structural strength. The Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) measurement methods used in other countries are presented. The temperature and moisture changes in the day are analysed, evaluating their impact on pavement design. The strength of asphalt pavement layers, as well as Eo modulus values, measured using the falling weight deflectometer, strongly depend on the pavement temperature. When we use deflectometer for measuring asphalt pavement strength at different environmental conditions and in different season, the values of Eo modulus should be reduced to the assumed standard temperature. So during this research at the experimental asphalt pavement structure the temperature correction factor was revised. The use of this factor enables to adjust the Eo modulus values of asphalt pavement layers measured by the Falling Weight Deflectometer to the standard temperature of +20 °C.

Fluxes of Energy and Water Vapour from Grazed Pasture on a Mineral Soil in the Waikato

The eddy covariance (EC) technique was used to measure half hourly fluxes of energy and evaporation from 15 December 2007 to 30 November 2008 at the Scott Research Farm, located 7 km east of Hamilton. Many other supporting measurements of climate and soil variables were also made. The research addressed three objectives: 1. To examine the accuracy of the eddy covariance measurement technique. 2. Understand the surface partitioning of energy and water vapour on a diurnal to annual timescale. 3. Compare measurements of evaporation to methods of estimation. Average energy balance closure at Scott Farm was deficient by 24%, comparable to published studies of up to 30%. Three lysimeter studies were carried out to help verify eddy covariance data. These resulted in the conclusions that; 1) lysimeter pots needed to be deeper to allow for vegetation rooting depths to be encompassed adequately; 2) forcing energy balance closure was not supported by two of the studies (summer and winter); 3) latent heat flux (λE) gap filling of night time EC data during winter over estimated values by about 10 W m-2; and 4) the spring lysimeter study verified eddy covariance measurements including the closure forcing method. Some uncertainty still exists as to the accuracy of both lysimeter and EC methods of evaporation measurement because both methods still have potential biases, however for the purpose of this study, it would appear data are sufficiently accurate to have confidence in results. Energy and water vapour fluxes varied on both a diurnal and seasonal timescale. Diurnally, fluxes were small or negative at night and were highest during the day, usually at solar noon. Seasonally, spring and summer had the highest energy and evaporation fluxes and winter rates were small but tended to exceed available energy supply. Evaporation was constrained by soil moisture availability during summer and by energy availability during winter. Estimated annual evaporation at Scott Farm was 755 mm, 72% of precipitation. Two evaporation models were compared to eddy covariance evaporation (EEC) measurements; the FAO56 Penman-Monteith model (Eo) and the Priestley-Taylor model (EPT). Both models over estimated evaporation during dry conditions and slightly under estimated during winter. The α coefficient that is applied to EPT was not constant and a seasonally adjusted value would be most appropriate. A crop coefficient of 1.13 is needed for Eo measurements during moist conditions. Eo began over estimating evaporation when soil moisture contents dropped below ~44%. A water stress adjustment was applied to both models which improved evaporation estimates, however early onset of drying was not able to be adjusted for. The adjusted Eo model is the most accurate overall, when compared to EEC.

This thesis is a part of the SIREOS project at Swedish Defence Research Agency which aims at developing a sensor system consisting of infrared and video sensors and an integrated navigation system. The sensor system is placed in a camera gimbal and will be used on moving platforms, e.g. UAVs, for surveillance and reconnaissance. The gimbal is a device that makes it possible for the sensors to point in a desired direction. In this thesis the sensor pointing problem is studied. The problem is analyzed and a system design is proposed. The major blocks in the system design are gimbal trajectory planning and gimbal motion control. In order to develop these blocks, kinematic and dynamic models are derived using techniques from robotics. The trajectory planner is based on the kinematic model and can handle problems with mechanical constraints, kinematic singularity, sensor placement offset and reference signal transformation. The gimbal motion controller is tested with two different control strategies, PID and LQ. The challenge is to perform control that responds quickly, but do not excite the damping flexibility too much. The LQ-controller uses a linearization of the dynamic model to fulfil these requirements.

Electro-optical effects of nonlinear optical chromophore in an amorphous polymer

Organic polymer materials have been broadly applied in optical storage, optical communication and optical signal process. It has been revealed that these organic materials have some superior characteristics such as larger electro-optical (EO) coefficients, broader bandwidth and shorter response time, which make it good for EO modulator application. In our study, the goal is to study the EO coefficient of novel polymer material to be used in low driving voltage EO modulator. During the experiment, the dependence of the second harmonic generation (SHG) intensity on doping concentration of DR1/PMMA was observed and a reasonable explanation of the nonlinear dependency was given. We measured the EO coefficient of a new material, ASF/PMMA, using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. We also observed the relaxation process of SHG intensity of this new material, which was compared with that of DR1/PMMA. Under the same measurement condition, we found that the EO coefficient of ASF/PMMA (13.1 pm/V) is significantly larger than that of DR1/PMMA (3 pm/V). It is also found that relaxation time of ASF/PMMA and DR1/PMMA are 22 and 8.5 seconds, respectively. Because of the superior characteristics of this material, it is suitable to be used in EO modulator.

Computational Study Of Ethylene Epoxidation

This work computationally investigates the partial oxidation of ethylene (i.e. ethylene epoxidation) using periodic Density Functional Theory (DFT) on slab models that represent the catalyst surfaces. The mechanical aspects of the reaction were investigated on silver surfaces, which are industrially applied catalysts, for a wide range of surface models varying from metallic surfaces with low oxygen coverage to oxide surfaces. For comparison, the metallic and oxide phases of copper and gold were also studied. On these surfaces, the reaction paths and the transition states along these paths for the selective and non-selective reaction channels were obtained using the climbing image nudged elastic band (CI-NEB) method. In order to answer the question &ldquo / what is the relation between the surface state and the ethylene oxide selectivity?&rdquo / metallic (100), (110) and (111) surfaces of Cu, Ag and Au / and, (001) surfaces of Cu2O, Ag2O and Au2O oxides were studied and compared. For the studied metallic surfaces, it was found that the selective and non-selective reaction channels proceed through the oxametallacycle (OMC) intermediate, and the product selectivity depends on the relative barriers of the these channels, in agreement with the previous reports. However for the studied metallic surfaces and oxygen coverages, a surface state that favors the ethylene oxide (EO) formation was not identified. The studied Au surfaces did not favor the oxygen adsorption and dissociation, and the Cu surfaces favored the non-selective product (acetaldehyde, AA) formation. Nevertheless, the results of Ag surfaces are in agreement with the ~50% EO selectivity of the un-promoted silver catalyst. The catalyst surface in the oxide state was modeled by the (001) surfaces of the well defined Cu2O, Ag2O and Au2O oxide phases. Among these three oxides, the Cu2O is found not to favor EO formation whereas Au2O is known to be unstable, however selective for epoxidation. The major finding of this work is the identification of a direct epoxidation path that is enabled by the reaction of the surface oxygen atoms, which are in two-fold (i.e. bridge) positions and naturally exist on (001) oxide surfaces of the studied metals. Among the three oxides studied, only Ag2O(001) surface does not show a barrier for the formation of adsorbed epoxide along the direct epoxidation path. Moreover, the overall heat of reaction that is around 105 kJ/mol agrees well with the previous reports. The single step, direct epoxidation path is a key step in explaining the high EO selectivities observed. Also for the oxide surfaces, the un-selective reaction that ends up in combustion products is found to proceed through the OMC mechanism where aldehyde formation is favored. Another major finding of this study is that, for the studied oxide surfaces two different types of OMC intermediates are possible. The first possibility is the formation of the OMC intermediate on oxygen vacant sites, where the ethylene can interact with the surface metal atoms directly. The second possibility is the formation of a direct OMC intermediate, through the interaction of the gas phase ethylene with the non-vacant oxide surface. This occurs through the local surface reconstruction induced by the ethylene. The effect of Cl promotion was also studied. Coadsorption of Cl is found to suppress the oxygen vacant sites and also the reconstruction effects that are induced by ethylene adsorption. Thus, by preventing the interaction of the ethylene directly with the surface metal atoms, Cl prevents the OMC formation, therefore the non-selective channel. At the same time Cl increases the electrophilicity of reacting surface oxygen. The direct epoxidation path appears to be stabilized by coadsorbed oxygen atoms. Thus, we carry the discussions on the silver catalyzed ethylene epoxidation one step further. Herein we present that the EO selectivity will be limited in the case of metallic catalyst, whereas, the oxide surfaces enable a direct mechanism where EO is produced selectively. The role of the Cl promoter is found to be mainly steric where it blocks the sites of non-selective channel.
