Early modern legal poetics and morality 1560-1625

Darvill Mills, Janis Jane January 2011 (has links)
This thesis examines the reciprocity of literary and legal cultures, and seeks to enhance understanding of cultural and socio-legal constructions of morality in early modern England. Identifying the tensions in an institutional legality in which both secular pragmatism and moral idealism act as formulating principals, it interrogates the sense of disjuncture that arises between imaginative concepts of moral justice and their translation into the formal structures of law. Chapter 1 investigates representations of rape in light of the legislative changes of the 1570s, and addresses the question of how literature shapes the legal imaginary of immorality. Literary models, notably Shakespeare's The Rape Of Lucrece (1594), and George Peele's Tale of Troy (1589), are examined together with the texts of Edward Coke and Thomas Edgar to argue that lawyers' mythopoeic interpretative strategies produce a form of legal fiction in relation to sexual crime. These strategies are contextualised in Chapter 2 in relation to the education and literary-legal culture at the Inns of Court, and the thesis progresses to an examination of the inns' literary and dramatic output – notably that of Thomas Norton and Thomas Sackville's Gorbuduc, and Arthur Broke's contemporaneous revels' masque, Desire and Lady Bewty (1561-2) – to establish how the legal fraternity wielded significant authority over Tudor sexual politics, moral signification, and interpretative practices. Chapters 3 and 4 explore legal and ethical challenges heralded by the Jacobean accession, particularly those posed by the Somerset scandal. Analysis of histories, letters, and court satire, together with Thomas Campion's The Lord Hay's Masque (1607), and George Chapman's Andromeda Liberata (1614) and The Tragedy of Chabot (1639), illuminates the period's textual negotiations of legal, political, and personal ethics, and offers a revealing picture of the moral paradoxes produced by the opacity of the parameters between the personal and political lives of the ruling elite.

O traidor vermelho: O Jornal e o discurso anticomunista (1935-1937) / "The red be trayer":O Jornal and the anticommunist discourse (1935- 1937)

Nelton Silva Araujo 03 April 2009 (has links)
The central aim of this essay is to investigate how was set the anti-communist speech of the political editorials and columns of O Jornal from 1935 and 1937. The fourth decade of the twentieth century was a period outlined by the increasing growth of the authoritarian government of Getúlio Vargas, culminating with the outset of the Estado Novo in November of 1937. It is aimed, throughout the analysis of the political editorials and columns of the paper, to understand the main themes used by the writers in the creation of an evil image of communism and its supporters, and how the paper legitimated the reinforcement actions of Getúlio Vargas. It is also aimed to learn the beginning of the political myth of the communist conspiracy and of the savior seen in Getúlio Vargas and of the deconstruction of the myth of the Cavalheiro da Esperança perceived in the person of Luiz Carlos Prestes, the most important communist leader of the time. It is also aimed to understand the historical moment of the Brazilian press in the 20s and 30s, studying specifically the historical trajectory of O Jornal and the thought of its owner, Mr. Assis Chateaubriand.

A inclusão digital como estratégia e política de gestão de Relações Públicas em organizações privadas / The digital inclusion as strategy and politics of Public Relations in private organizations

Ana Maria Franchon 24 April 2009 (has links)
The 21st century mainly features are the new information and communication technologies and the triad information, communication and knowledge. On the behalf of the analysis of the scene, this study intends to understand why private organizations develop projects of digital inclusion as strategies and politics of management of Public Relations. During the theoretical part, there were compared several theories of renamed authors of the present time, on the scene of the post-modern age and the digital inclusion. Besides, this study presents a case study on the Committee for Informatics Democratization and four supporters companies of the social projects of the entity. Although the scene clearly points to the strategically character assumed by the digital technology, the performance of the supporters companies in the spreading of the projects, via Internet, still is shy. However, all the projects of digital inclusion were strategically related to the core business, place where companies have influence and linked to the corporative lines of direction.

Os soldados de Roma contra Moscou: a atuação do Centro Dom Vital no cenário político e cultural brasileiro (Rio de Janeiro, 1922-1948) / The Roman Soldiers against Moscow: the performance of the Dom Vital Center in the political and cultural Brazilian scenario

Guilherme Ramalho Arduini 11 September 2014 (has links)
This thesis discusses the ways of recruiting and acting together in the Brazilian political and intellectual scene of a group of Law Students and liberal professionals called Centro D. Vital, located in the city of Rio de Janeiro but with branches in many other cities, namely in the North East of Brazil and in the State of Minas Gerais. The chronological boundaries of this study are the years of 1922 when the Centre was founded and one of its key figures, Alceu Amoroso Lima, published his first book and 1948, with the decease of Father Leonel Franca, SJ, the spiritual leader. His absence changed the identity of the group, but was only the last event in a chain of milestones that undermine its importance. In the quarter of a century between these two dates, the vitalistas (i. e., those who shared the ideas and values widespread by the Centre) published dozens of books, issued a monthly review (A Ordem) and had a pivotal role in some educational and working class policies. The structure of the thesis consists in a first chapter on the relationship between politics and culture in Getúlio Vargas regime (1930-1945), followed by the presentation of the morphology of the group. The last four chapters present the ensemble of books and actins written by them, divided by the themes: 1) literary critics; 2) the education and the relationship between science and faith; 3) contemporary hagiographies, i.e, biographies that work as sources for the making of a pantheon of models; 4) politics.

The importance of end customer value in the paper industry

Herlitz, Erik January 2019 (has links)
In a more digitalized world the paper industry has struggled to deliver customer value and stay relevant when the digital media has started to emerge. This problem has especially happened to newspaper which has seen a decline in Sweden with over 20% the last decade. Paper mills has also started to destroy shareholder value as many mills only work with offering customers low prices and tries to outlive their competitors. This has led to the following research objective of this study:  To examine the importance of end customer value in paper industry for developing market shares in the digital era. This study has been an exploratory and descriptive study with a qualitative data collection. The data has been to one part been collected through a market survey that has asked end-users how they perceive price and quality when comparing two different types of paper. Also interviews with one paper producer and two printing companies have been done to cover the professional aspect of customer value for the paper industry.  It has been clearly shown in this study that customers and companies inside the paper industry are agreeing in which customer values being most important, quality and price. The importance of being innovative was also stated by interviewed printing companies and the paper producer. The market survey was a good example of how innovation, from a paper producer, related to important customer values – perceived quality and perceived price – can create a potentially higher market share and profitability, instead of just lowering their prices and try to outlive their competitors.  The study has also contributed to see that companies inside the paper industry are conscious that they face tough competition from a more digitalized world. Even though the companies know that they face competition from the digital media the companies have a good understanding of which products they can continue to compete with and which products that digital media has the upper hand on.

Depression Symptoms and Marital Quality in Vietnam-Era Veterans: Does the Presence of Higher Post-Traumatic Stress Symptoms (PTSS) Matter?

Stott, Kevin L. 01 June 2015 (has links)
Using data from 617 Vietnam-era veterans, this study aimed to better understand the relationships between depression symptoms, post-traumatic stress symptoms, and overall marital quality. Results indicated that depression symptoms and PTSS each had a negative relationship with marital quality when considered individually. The association between depression symptoms and marital quality persisted when PTSS was accounted for. However, the significant association between PTSS and marital quality dropped out. Further, PTSS did not moderate the association between depression symptoms and marital quality. The current study suggests tha tdepression symptoms and PTSS overlap in relation to marital quality among Vietnam-era veterans, with depression symptoms playing a major role. Future research should address samples across various age groups, different war campaigns, and among veterans with higher levels of clinical distress.
