Unlimited and uncontrolled use of such pesticides can lead to serious consequences in terms of human health and ecological balance. We evaluated the acute toxicity of active ingredient glyphosate (GLI) and two glyphosate-based formulations, Roundup Original (RUP) and Glyphosate AKB 480 (AKB) on different organisms: seeds of cucumber (Cucumis sativus), lettuce (Lactuca sativa) and tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum), microcrustacean Artemia salina and zebrafish (Danio rerio) early life stages. For germination endpoint, L. esculentum presented sensitivity (EC50 = 702.10 mg/L) for AKB and L. sativa for GLI exposure (EC50 = 612.30 mg/l) whereas the three substances induced significant toxic effect on root elongation of all tested species. GLI, RUP and AKB induced significant toxicity to A. salina and were classified as Category III according to Globally Harmonized Classification System (GHS) criteria. However, RUP (LC50-48h of 39.4 mg/L) was more toxic than GLI (LC50-48h of 65.24 mg/L) and AKB (LC50-48h of 104.20 mg/L). For embryo-larval toxicity test, RUP proved be more toxic than AKB for mortality endpoint (LC50-96h of 28.23 and 75.33 mg/L, respectively) and GLI (LC50 > 100 mg/L) while for hatching parameter, AKB (EC50-48h of 6.23 mg/L) was more toxic than RUP (EC50-48h of 8.29 mg/L) and GLI exposure did not affect the hatching process. We concluded that active ingredient (GLI), AKB and RUP glyphosate-based formulations are phytotoxic and induce toxic effects in non-target organisms like A. salina and zebrafish early life stage. In addition, our results shows the evaluation necessity of glyphosate-based formulations, once they present different toxic potentials on different organisms.

Honour and revenge : a study of the role of honour in Euripides' Medea and Hippolytus with reference to a selection of contemporary societies.

Barrett, Deborah. January 1998 (has links)
My purpose in this study is twofold. Firstly, I intend to examine the existence of honour in Greek society by an analysis of its presentation in works of Greek literature. In order to achieve this, I shall first examine the values of the Homeric, heroic society so that a picture of the code of honour that was used in those times, might be established. This code of honour provided the foundation upon which later honourable behaviour was based and from which it grew; it is, therefore, a necessary addition in a study such as this. Then, I shall proceed to a study of Euripides' Medea and Hippolytus, two plays that firmly incorporate the motif of honour and revenge. Secondly, I intend to examine a few examples of modern societies. The purpose of this is to ascertain whether any relationship between archaic, classical and contemporary cultures can be established. Shared values and beliefs will be examined in order to determine any possible similarities between cultures and societies that are chronologically separated by hundreds of years. / Thesis (M.A.)-University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 1998.

Muradov, Elman 05 1900 (has links) (PDF)
Few against many : the reception of the battle of Thermopylae in popular culture, South Africa and children's literature.

Murray, Jeffrey. January 2009 (has links)
The Battle of Thermopylae in 480 B.C. is an event of Greek history that has inspired numerous subsequent receptions. Many of these later ‘receptions’ of the battle have been studied in varying degrees of detail by scholars over the years, however certain periods, or modes of reception have been ignored or neglected in this scholarship. In this dissertation I examine some of these neglected areas of research. These areas include: the uses and abuses of the Battle of Thermopylae in contemporary popular culture. In this section I focus primarily on Frank Miller’s graphic novel 300 (1998/9), as well as Zack Snyder’s 2006 film of the same name. Secondly I focus on a ‘national’ response to the ‘Thermopylae theme’, in which I consider its use in South Africa. I narrow my focus to examine its use as a motif in the poetry of the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. Finally I explore how the Battle of Thermopylae was employed by writers of children’s literature in the Victorian period, where I delimit my discussion to Caroline Dale Snedeker’s The Coward of Thermopylae (1911), as well as Andrew Lang’s short story: ‘The Spartan Three Hundred’ in The True Story Book (1893). These categories cover films, graphic novels, poetry as well as fiction and non-fiction for children. Yet despite being disparate categories, each of these periods, places or genres maintains the ‘kernel’ of the story of Thermopylae: a few, brave Greeks who fought for freedom against the countless Persians invading their land. At the same time different elements of the story are exploited to highlight various issues important in the different contexts and periods. It is my hope that this thesis will not only play a role in researching these lesser known appropriations and adaptations of the Battle of Thermopylae, but that it will also ‘break boundaries’ in the field of reception studies within the discipline of Classics. / Theses (M.A)-University of KwaZulu Natal, Durban, 2009.

Eros e Bía em Helena e Cassandra : gênero e violência no imaginário clássico ateniense

Nólibos, Paulina Terra January 2006 (has links)
This Thesis, in the field of classics and gender studies, deals with the feminine figures of the Trojan myth, Helen and Kassandra, in the universe of sexual representation during the fifth-century b.C., articulating the concepts of Eros and Bías in tragic drama and iconology. The problems of kidnaping, adultery and rape of women are analyzed through two kinds of primary sources: the tragedy of Euripides and the iconographic material from the vases of red figures, both produced in classical Athens. These subjects are entwined and confronted with the literary tradition since Homer and within the formation of social patterns in the athenian classic period. The research’s goal is to discuss the narrative and interpretative variations of this Mycenaean myth of the fall of Troy in the impersonation of these heroines, and to relate the different aspects of the scenes’ representation to ideology and sexual politics, to law and social practices and with the sexuality standards in Athens, as observed during the fifthcentury by its poets and painters.
