New Orleans, the New South, and the Fight for the Panama ExpositionBaiamonte, Victoria D. 20 May 2011 (has links)
For various reasons, the city of New Orleans has often been ignored in discussions of the New South movement. New Orleans politicians joined the movement during the Progressive Era, much later than other Southern municipal leaders. In becoming a New South city, the Crescent City was launched onto the international trade scene. By an examination of city leaders' efforts to gain federal rights to host an exposition in celebration of the Panama Canal, this study argues New Orleans not only became a New South city, but an international trade entrepôt. Though the exposition efforts failed, the efforts of the city to cultivate its business and hospitality potential served the city well.

Integrating doctrine and expository preaching: A proposal and an analysis for the twenty-first centuryBreidenbaugh, Joel Randall 13 November 2003 (has links)
This dissertation proposes and analyzes the integration of doctrine and expository preaching for the twenty-first century. Chapter 1 traces the recent history of doctrinal preaching and expository preaching. Problems related to postmodernism, the New Homiletic, and the changes within contemporary evangelicalism also receive treatment.
Chapter 2 defines and blends the definitions of expository preaching and doctrinal preaching. These definitions form the basis for defining doctrinal expository preaching. Several doctrinal prerequisites of an expositor conclude this section.
Chapter 3 examines the biblical basis for doctrinal exposition. The semantic domain for preaching and the Bible's practitioners of doctrinal exposition support this basis.
Chapter 4 incorporates the disciplines of biblical and systematic theology for the task of theological interpretation. Moreover, principles for theological exegesis of literary genres prepare the expositor for the homiletical process. The chapter concludes with steps in the doctrinal expository sermon process as well as with two valid approaches for implementing doctrinal exposition.
Chapter 5 covers postmodern issues of truth, entertainment, language, image, and story. Also, the subject of applying doctrine is discussed. Observations of valuable doctrines for contemporary evangelicalism end this section.
Chapter 6 describes many practicalities of doctrinal exposition. A summary concludes the work.
This study argues for the need to integrate doctrine and expository preaching for the twenty-first century. Furthermore, this work proposes doctrinal exposition distinctively, biblically, theologically, and practically. In order for preachers to declare the whole counsel of God, sermons must employ doctrinal exposition. / This item is only available to students and faculty of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Factors in expository preaching that influence attention, comprehension and retention levelsBlackwood, Ricky Keith 18 May 2006 (has links)
The gathered data in this research provides pastors, Christian educators, and other educators with a better understanding of multi-sensory teaching and advanced multi-sensory teaching and their influence on the cognitive domain. Specifically, this experiment seeks to determine if the use of multi-sensory teaching models could improve the impact of expository teaching in the cognitive domain, particularly as it relates to attention, comprehension, and retention in the life of the student.
The different teaching methods are: (1) Mono-Sensory Teaching : Auditory Teaching; (2) Multi-sensory Teaching : Auditory + Visual Teaching; (3) Advanced Multi-sensory Teaching : Auditory + Visual + Kinesthetic Teaching.
The work sets forth the cognitive objectives of the pastor-teacher, which include influencing the attention, retention, and comprehension of students. The research questions then ask: In expository preaching, does multi-sensory delivery and advanced multi-sensory delivery significantly influence attention, retention and comprehension?
Literature was reviewed that considered the educational, neurological, and theological implications of multi-sensory teaching. Literature, which examines teaching styles and learning styles, is also included. This literature supports the theory that people have unique learning preferences by which they prefer to learn and by which they learn the best. The closer the teaching matches the learning style of the student, the more effective the learning of the student will be.
A quasi-experimental posttest only design was conducted on a sample that included 923 individuals from 61 different nationalities. Students we treated with the three types of delivery and then observed to measure attention levels and post tested to measure comprehension and retention levels. Mono-sensory Delivery was the control group as no new teaching method was introduced. Multi-sensory Delivery was Tx 1 as the first new teaching variable was introduced. Advanced Multi-sensory Delivery was Tx 2 as the second new teaching variable was introduced. The test was conducted three times.
Results of the three preaching methodologies were collected, interpreted, and conclusions were reached. / This item is only available to students and faculty of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary.

Compte tenu des caractéristiques pharmacodynamiques et pharmacocinétiques / The multinational context of pharmacoepidemiology, and the resulting increased number ofmulti-sources studies have generated concerns in relation with conflicting results and the question of the impact of methodological choices on study results. Increasing the confidence in the conclusions derived from these observational studies is a crucial issue, which is closely related to the robustness of the evidence produced. In this area, impact of drug exposure measurement and risk window might be crucial.Drug exposure is mostly characterized by discontinuous episodes, marked by changes in doses and presence of concomitant medications. Considering the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamics characteristics specific to each individual drug, the way in which the drug exposure is presented is of great importance. However, methods used for handling drug exposure episodes in electronic healthcare databases are varying widely according studies. However, the impact of these methods

Contribution de l'environnement résidentiel à l'exposition au plomb des enfants de 6 mois à 6 ans en France, 2008-2009 / Contribution of residential sources to lead exposure for children aged from 6 months to 6 years in France, 2008-2009Oulhote, Youssef 03 February 2012 (has links)
However, it remains a public health concern, due to the accumulation of evidence on the adverse health effects at low doses. Primary prevention is considered crucial for these blood lead levels below the action level of 100 µg/L. To date in France, environmental determinants of moderate blood lead levels and their impacts are not documented. The objective of this thesis is to estimate the contribution of residential sources to lead exposure for children 6 months to 6 years in France. This work is based on the analysis of exposure data representative of children aged from 6 months to 6 years, both in children's blood (lead content) and their residential environment (lead in water, soil and dust). The analysis was based on 1) the comparison of isotopic signatures of lead to identify exposure sources 2) a regression model between blood and environmental lead concentrations. The analysis showed a multi-source residential exposure, with great impact of exposures to low environmental lead concentrations at a population-level, particularly in dust. This reinforces the need for general preventive measures to further reduce low exposures. For the highest exposures, the potential impact of hypothetical standard concentrations was evaluated

Pavilhões e o campo ensaístico da arquitetura: o caso da Galeria Serpentine em Londres / Pavilions and the rehearsal field of architecture: the case of Serpentine Gallery in LondonJaekel, Paola de Oliveira 10 May 2017 (has links)
This paper aims to provide analysis of a typology - the pavilions, more specifically the case of the Serpentine Gallery Summer Pavilions in London. In favor of comprehending the typology as well as the developed program in London, this research was based on a selected bibliographical survey on the subject-matter and other Serpentine Gallery projects, additionally to a visit to one of the pavilions and other works by the same architect, the Chilean Smiljan Radíc. It has been used, as starting point, the reference of the author Moisés Puente and his book \"100 anos de pavilhões de exposição\", subsequent to publications on architecture history and monographs by other architects. Regarding the Serpentine Gallery, the research began with the 10-year commemorative publication of the event: \"Serpentine Gallery Pavilions\", from author Philip Jodidio, along with other publications about each pavilion. Lastly, monograph publications were gathered on the architect Smiljan Radíc, as well as on the 2014 pavilion. Therefore, it was possible to draw a panorama on these buildings throughout history, likewise some of its emblematic works for the discipline of architecture, and ther after, analyse the propositions that have been made by this gallery since the 2000s. As a result, the pavilion visited in 2014 is presented along with the author\'s work in an examination of the rehearsal field of the architect, the same field is further analysed in some of the most significant pavilions in history.

A física da música no Renascimento: uma abordagem histórico-espistemológica / The physics of music in the Renaissance: a historical epistemological approachPereira, Rafael Andrade 14 December 2010 (has links)
This project aims to research under a historic-epistemological perspective the development of musical acoustic in the Renaissance. This research will be especially focused in the search for indicators of the importance of experimental verification in the production of acoustic knowledge of that time. Therefore, it becomes essential that the historiografical search provide theoretical subsidies for reasoning of the transition from a science musical centered on a dogmatism arithmetic to a science musical, which has a verification test as a relevant criterion of distorted from their theories. In order to extract the indicators mentioned, the aim is to analyze well-treated theoretical music of this period under the prospect of relations between the physics, mathematics and music. From an educational overview, this project intends, through a didactic exhibition at the museum \"Estação Ciência\", to reproduce structurally clarifying experiments of acustical concepts emerged in the Scientific Revolution, making use of modern resources. As a result of such bibliographic thoughts, it is intended to discuss various teaching strategies on the development of the relationship between physics, mathematics and music, on a perspective historic-epistemological. Then this project aims to describe the process of the development of a didactic exposition about the relation between mathematics, physics and music under a historicepistemological perspective. Such exposition intends to reconstruct the main experiments of the acoustics musical history, which are responsible for the consolidation of the theory that is currently known, evidencing the points of the importance on the experimental verification in the production of the acoustic knowledge, in the history of science. In this direction, it is extremely important that this research provides theoretical subsidies to the implementation of a transition between a centered musical science and an arithmetical dogmatism for a musical science which has the experimental verification as a relevant criteria of falsifiability of its theories. In doing so, this project intends to present the didatic exposition that will be carried out in the museum \"Estação Ciência\", reproducing, in writing, its structure, experiments and panels that aim to clarify emergent acoustic concepts in Old Greece and its transformations throughout the Scientific Revolution.

Making machines of animals: the international livestock exposition, 1900-1920Knapp, Neal Allen 27 February 2019 (has links)
This dissertation examines the establishment and influence of the International Livestock Exposition, an annual show that began in Chicago in 1900 and that served as the central hub of the national livestock improvement movement. Industrial meatpacking firms and land-grant university professors worked together to transform the genetic composition and physiology of American meat-producing animals. Packers hosted the Exposition at the Union Stockyards to address market irregularities in quality and supply. University researchers intended to solve a larger set of problems that included rural population decline, the need for more food output to feed a growing population, and diminishing soil fertility. These unlikely partners created the International to eliminate inferior, or “scrub,” livestock.
The International played a pivotal role in remaking livestock genotypes and phenotypes. Its organizers and participants favored “improved” animals descended from purebred, British livestock with recorded ancestries—a preference rooted in the reformers’ pseudo-scientific belief in eugenics. Purebred animals had standard bodies with a narrow set of physiological outcomes, which amounted to biotic technology. But genetic homogeneity was only a building block for improvement. The International also employed contests, demonstrations, and advocacy to reconfigure American livestock by making them smaller, more compact, and early-maturing.
This study also analyzes the larger shift in American agriculture toward the Corn Belt model of grain feeding. Treating animals as dynamic historical agents, it suggests that machinery, tractors, seeds, and implements did not alone accomplish the industrialization of agriculture. Meat-producing cattle, sheep, and pigs were a requisite component in an emerging industrial sequence. These grain-fed modern livestock and their farmer caretakers fit into a developing web of mutually dependent agricultural specialists. The International united this movement into a singular body at the end of each year in Chicago, and in the process, shaped American agricultural practices and encouraged farm specialization until the show closed in 1975. Sources consulted include land-grant university research and publications, meatpacker records and propaganda, and newspaper and agricultural journal articles.

Pesquisa do Estado da Bahia - FAPEB / The present study has as main objective the research on educational processes in the Museu Casa do Sert?o, belonging to the Universidade Estadual de Feira de Santana, in the analysis of the expository route of guided tours. To this end, we used a process of qualitative research with semi-structured interview, questionnaire, analysis of some documents and some observations from the exhibitions. The theoretical framework is constructed according to Certeau's ideas (1996), Canclini (2013), Albuquerque (2011), Cury (2006) among other authors. The discourse of its creator, Eurico Alves Boaventura, is very present in the exhibition, but it also coexists with some elements of modernity in the use of certain industrialized materials present in some objects. The historical perspective is striking in the exhibition, though the exhibits focus on other issues such as, for example, man's relationship with nature. These discursive elements relate to other discursive productions on the Brazilian Northeast accentuating a cultural repertoire that produces a scenario typically propagated by the media. In addition, there was a didactical trend in your exhibitions, assuming that the most of public of this Museum is scholar. / O presente estudo tem como objetivo principal a investiga??o sobre as a??es pedag?gicas do Museu Casa do Sert?o, pertencente ?
