Statligt arbete mot våldsbejakande extremism : En jämförande fallstudie kring Polismyndighetens och Skolverkets arbete för att motverka radikalisering och våldsbejakande extremismHoset, Oskar January 2023 (has links)
The purpose with this study is to develop a deeper understanding about how Swedish governmental agencies can differ in how they handle radicalization and violent extremism as a community problem. The reason behind this study is the growth of attention on young western citizens being radicalized and involved in terrorist activity during the last decade. The governmental agencies that have been selected for this study are the Swedish Police Authority and the Swedish National Agency for Education. The chosen research design for this study is a qualitative method to analyze two official agencies reports connected with measures handling violent extremism. The results provided by the research shows that both state agencies are relying on agency cooperation to handle the issue with violent extremism. It also shows that the Swedish National Agency of Education focuses on long term prevention methods on micro level while the Swedish Police Authority focuses on requiring juridical support on macro level to develop more intelligence collecting methods. This is explained by the fact that state agencies have their own ways of applying governance tools on individual subjects.

Unpacking Right-Wing Extremism in "Multicultural" Canada : The Case of the Canadian Nationalist FrontFarhang, Farnaz 31 October 2022 (has links)
There has been a rise in Right-wing extremism (RWE) mobilizing within what is known as the setter-colonial state of Canada, with some groups espousing values and narratives grounded in White nationalist ideology which have led to instances of violence and harm against community members. These incidents of harm and violence occur in the context of the Canadian state's claims to inclusive multiculturalism, civility and benevolence. While there are many looking into the presence of RWE groups to document their existence, mobilizing patterns and tactics, very little analysis exists that offers a deep analysis into these groups and situates their political ideology within the broader context of the Canadian state’s governance logics. Therefore, to push the discussion on this topic further, this project looks at the specific case of the Canadian Nationalist Front's (CNF), a White nationalist group in Canada, and unpacks the discourse shared on their blog. Through dissecting the CNF's blogpost with a theoretical framework of analysis that moves beyond understanding this group as merely a fringe group which holds fundamentally different values than the Canadian state, I make links to the existing literature that demonstrates the parallels between the two. I argue that the racialized governance logics of White nationalist groups, like the CNF, are also shared in the settler-colonial logics of the Canadian state's border governance strategies. Further, I highlight the ways in which groups like the CNF ground their movements in the superiority of Whiteness, while using the state's claims of inclusivity and multiculturalism to justify their entitlement to hold these exclusionary ideologies while presenting themselves as victims of those that they "Other". Finally, I contextualize their discourse within the context of neoliberalism, which has intensified the harms of racial capitalism in a way that has also impacted the White working class and allowed groups like the CNF to use economic grievances to mobilize their movements.

Authoritarian, far-right responses to the Covid-19 pandemic: an analysis of QAnon’s crisis narrativesEfthymiadou, Panagiota, Miteva, Anelia January 2021 (has links)
The coronavirus pandemic has changed the lives of individuals all over the world. The goal of this research is to investigate and understand the narratives and underlying messages of the QAnon movement concerning COVID-19. The theoretical basis for this analysis is that of uncertainty-identity theory and extremism to study the process by which people embrace these types of movements and their values. Also, to examine the spread of QAnons’ messages and conspiracy theories on digital media, network society theory is used. In order to carry out this research, we conducted qualitative content analysis on data gathered directly from QAnon sources. According to the results of the study, the movement proceeded to create crisis narratives that tap into social anxieties and political uncertainty. Accordingly, the pandemic was used for the movement to grow, gain new momentum and supporters, and even merge other conspiracy theories making the narratives more elaborate.

There Will Be Blood: Southeast Asia as the Second Front on the War on Terror – A case studyÖsterlind, Christian January 2009 (has links)
International terrorism is a relevant and acute issue to deal with for most states across the globe. The horrors and fear of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001 in New York and Washington left governments with new priorities and challenges to cooperate and coordinate efforts to combat terrorism. Governments in Southeast Asia have been faced with the threat of terrorism for several decades, although it has increased during the last decade. This case study sets out to trace and analyze terrorism in Southeast Asia from a neo-realist perspective. The first research question deals with the fact that the region is being referred to as the “second front” on the war on terror, or as a “terrorist haven”. Further, by using a neo-realist framework, an analysis of the situation and the actions of governments in the region will be provided. Finally, according to neo-realist theory, regional cooperation is only peripheral to the actual struggles of power and balancing that states are involved in. Yet the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) is arguably an actor in combating terrorism in the region. Therefore, one of the objectives is to analyze these initiatives and to provide reflections for further action.
