Re-remembering Porraimos: memories of the Roma Holocaust in post-socialist Ukraine and RussiaKonstantinov, Maria 22 June 2015 (has links)
This thesis explores the ways in which the Holocaust experiences and memories of Roma communities in post-Socialist Ukraine and Russia have been both remembered and forgotten. In these nations, the Porraimos, meaning the “Great Devouring” in some Romani dialects, has been largely silenced by the politics of national memory, and by the societal discrimination and ostracization of Roma communities. While Ukraine has made strides towards memorializing Porraimos in the last few decades, the Russian state has yet to do the same. I question how experiences of the Porraimos fit into Holocaust memory in these nations, why the memorialization of the Porraimos is important, what the relationship between communal and public memory is, and lastly, how communal Roma memory is instrumental in reshaping the public memory of the Holocaust. I approach these questions through a comparative, interdisciplinary framework that combines historical analysis, interviews with two Russian Roma individuals from St. Petersburg Russia, an overview of existing literature and film that focus on the Porraimos, and a survey of the memorials for Roma victims in Western, Central, and Eastern Europe. Using these methods, I determine how the Porraimos fits into political and cultural memory in these nations, and what the future of Porraimos memory might look like. / Graduate

What makes regions in Eastern Europe catching up? The role of foreign investment, human resources and geography.Tondl, Gabriele, Vuksic, Goran January 2003 (has links) (PDF)
In this paper we analyse regional growth in Central and Eastern Europe in the second half of the 1990s, a period in which pronounced disparities between a group of catching-up regions and another group of falling back regions appeared. We aim to identify the factors behind a dynamic growth performance and the weaknesses leading to poor growth and thus investigate the role of (foreign) investment, education and innovation as well as geographical factors in a model of economic growth. The key relationships proposed by this model are then estimated with empirical data for the period 1995-2000 using spatial econometric tools. We find that foreign direct investment was paramount for regional growth in that period. EU border regions and capital areas clearly outperformed others. Further, regional growth clusters have appeared. Surprisingly, the high level of secondary education in Eastern European regions played no role with growth. Higher education, in contrast served to facilitate technology transfer. (author's abstract) / Series: EI Working Papers / Europainstitut

The Specifity Of The Eastern Enlargement:Erdemir, Burcu 01 June 2005 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis analyses the Eastern enlargement of the EU in comparison with the past four enlargement rounds, as a result of which it proves that Central and Eastern enlargement (CEE) is a unique experience for the EU. After the fourth enlargement, the EU turned its face to the CEECs, which witnessed unexpected events of a historic nature, with the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. This date symbolises a great change for the CEECs, such as the end of communism, transition to open market economy, democratisation and stability. A special focus is given to the inclusion of the CEECs into the EU necessitating to make adjustments both in the EU and in the CEECs. The specifity of the fifth enlargement derives from all the changes and challenges that it poses to the applicant countries and the Union but also to its neighbours. It concludes that the factors of uniqueness of the Eastern enlargement will strengthen the probability of the inclusion of the future applicants in the Eastern part of the continent. This enlargement is a positive development for the old and the new member states, it is one of the most important &lsquo / political necessities&rsquo / and &lsquo / historical opportunities&rsquo / that the EU is facing since its establishment, because it will not only ensure the unification, stabilisation, security, economic growth and general well-being of the continent but also because it has opened the way of membership to the future possible applicants in the Eastern part of the continent.

Potential for Agricultural Trade between China and Central and Eastern Europe within the 16+1 Framework / Potential for Agricultural Trade between China and Central and Eastern Europe within the 16+1 FrameworkRasenko, Elena January 2018 (has links)
The goal of the following paper is to analyse the trade potential for Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) and China in the trade of food products. Even though the trade in food products is comparably low, there are several reasons why it is worth a deeper analysis. Food security is having an important role in the Chinese domestic politics. Due to environmental, socio- economic and demographic changes, China cannot be self-sufficient and is therefore dependent on food imports. Since the introduction of the One Belt One Road Initiative and the 16+1 framework, China aims to improve the cooperation and trade in food commodities with participating countries. CEE can be a reliable partner because it produces high quality products with comparative advantages. With the help of the Gravity Model, the effects of the 16+1 framework was estimated, as well as the trade potential. Following the results, the introduction of the 16+1 framework has a positive and significant effect on agricultural trade between CEE and China. However, only five countries have potential to increase their food exports to China, while the remaining eleven already exceed their food exports. China on the other hand, is exporting below its potential in most of the cases.
