Tension and disordered eating behaviors in the daily lives of adolescents and young adults from the general population: Associations and moderating role of trait emotion regulationPeschel, Stephanie K. V., Fürtjes, Sophia, Sigrist, Christine, Voss, Catharina, Berwanger, Johanna, Ollmann, Theresa M., Kische, Hanna, Rückert, Frank, König, Julian, Pieper, Lars, Beesdo-Baum, Katja 16 October 2024 (has links)
Experiences of tension and difficulties in emotion regulation have been linked to eating pathology in clinical samples and are targeted in respective treatment approaches. The present study aimed to investigate the impact of tension on engagement in disordered eating behaviors (DEBs) and potential moderating effects of trait emotion regulation in young people from the general population. A subsample of 971 adolescents and young adults from an epidemiological cohort study reported on levels of tension and four different DEBs (skipping eating, restrained eating, eating large amounts of food, loss-of-control-eating) via ecological momentary assessment (EMA), as well as on trait emotion regulation via questionnaire. In multilevel models, momentary tension did not predict levels of subsequent DEBs. However, higher average levels of tension across the EMA period predicted higher levels of all DEBs. No interactions with emotion regulation emerged. Individuals experiencing overall higher levels of tension appear to be more prone to engaging in DEBs.

To will a child without success to get it is a difficult step for couple who consult in Medically Assisted Procreation (MAP) center. This step can be comparable to crisis, or even bereavement, notably the natural fertility mourning. As we are a woman or a man, the personal experience can be different. Ambivalent feelings can come along the coverage of couple in MAP center. Couple can start attempt with lot of hope then, when they are not satisfied, go through negative one. Tensions can appear in the couple relationship, affecting communication and personal experience. Some studies were interested on personal experience of those who consult on MAP center, but French studies assessing child project through questionnaire are scarce. Studies of body dissatisfaction of these peoples are often unaccounted-for despite the involvement of infertility and associated treatment on identity and body dissatisfaction. This work aimed to study, in an exploratory way, child project and physical personal experience of couple consulting in MAP center, through comprehensive and validated tools. Subjects (N=102, M age=36 y.o.) have been chosen in 3 MAP centers (Hospital Jean Verdier at Bondy, Hospital Bèclère at Clamart and Hospital Pellegrin at Bordeaux) and were invited to fill out questionnaires. To complete questionnaires results, some couples have been observed during interview with the psychologist from the hospital. These results have been compared with those from the control group. Results suggest there is a different personal experience according to the gender but also between control group and clinical one. Notably, couples consulting in AMP center are more satisfied of their body appearance than the control group, which is in opposite of expected results. This exploratory study raised numerous questions and shows the interest to study physical personal experience and the child project of couple consulting in AMP center. It gives clinical and precautionary measure prospects as well as future research on infertile problems.

Menopause, Rurality, And Obesity in Rural African American Womenkilgore, colleen 10 November 2014 (has links)
In the US, one in every eight deaths is due to an obesity-related chronic health condition (ORCHC). More than half of African American women (AAW) 20 years old or older are obese or morbidly obese, as are 63% of menopausal AAW. Many have ORCHC that increase their morbidity and mortality and increase health care costs. In 2013, 42.6 percent of AAs living in South Carolina (SC) were obese. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to identify the cognitive, behavioral, biological, and demographic factors that influence health outcomes (BMI, and ORCHC) of AAW living in rural SC. A sample of 200 AAW (50 in each of the 4 groups of rurality by menopausal status), 18-64 years, completed the: Menopausal Rating Scale (symptoms); Body Image Assessment for Obesity (self-perception of body); Mental Health Inventory; Block Food Frequency Questionnaire; Eating Behaviors and Chronic Conditions, Traditional Food Habits, and Food Preparation Technique questionnaires – and measures for Body Mass Index. Most rural, and premenopausal AAW were single and not living with a partner. Premenopausal women had significantly higher educational levels. Sixty percent of AAW had between 1 and 5 ORCHC. Most AAW used salt based seasonings, ate deep fried foods 1 to 3 times a week, and ate outside the home 1 to 3 times a month. Few AAW knew the correct daily serving for grains and dairy, and most consumed less than the recommended daily serving of fruits, vegetables and dairy. Morbidly obese AAW used more traditional food preparation techniques than obese and normal-weight AAW. Rural, and menopausal AAW had significantly higher morbid obesity levels, consumed larger portions of meats and vegetables, and reported more body image dissatisfaction than very rural AAW, and premenopausal AAW, respectively. Controlling for socioeconomic factors the relationships between perceptions of body images, psychological distress, and psychological wellbeing remained significant for numbers of ORCHC

Actitudes socioculturales hacia la apariencia y conductas alimentarias de riesgo en mujeres usuarias de Instagram / Sociocultural attitudes towars appearance and risky eating behaviours in women who use instagramEguiguren Morgan, Andrea 14 March 2022 (has links)
Introduction: The specific rules of physical appearance proposed by society, are internalized by the human being and impact on their behavior, leading to risky eating behaviors such as excessive weight control and erroneous actions for the control of this (Thompson & Stice, 2001; Hunot, Vizmanos, Vázquez & Celis, 2008). Objectives: To examine the relationship between sociocultural attitudes towards appearance and risky eating behaviors in women Instagram users and compare them according to age. Methodology: 392 Women from Lima participated in Instagram users aged between 18 and 45 years (M= 19.5; DS= 7.17). The Socialcultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire- 4 (SATAQ-4) (Thompson and Stice, 2001) and the Eating Disorder Inventory (EDI3) (Gardner, 1991) were administered. Results: There is a relationship between sociocultural influences towards appearance and obsession with thinness. There are differences between young and adult women in the obsession with thinness. Young women were more likely to become obsessed with their appearance. Conclusion: There is a relationship between the internalization of the ideal of thinness and the obsession with thinness. Young women are more exposed to such pressure over how their bodies should look. / Tesis

Examining the Effects of Eating Behaviors on Mental Health and Internalization of Weight-Based MessagingBollinger, Avery E. 18 August 2022 (has links)
The current study sought to explore the effects of eating behaviors on mental health and the internalization of attitudes toward one's appearance. This was performed through a survey distributed through a global online market research firm, Dynata, and gathered 495 eligible participants. Of those, 78 represented the plant-based group, and 417 represented the non-plant-based group. Each completed the survey containing sections with the Mizes Anorectic Cognitions Scale (MACS) to assess if they were at low or high risk for having/developing an eating disorder, a section determining if participants were plant-based (defined as a regimen that encourages whole, plant-based foods and discourages meats, dairy products, and eggs as well as all refined and processed foods (Tuso et al., 2013)) or not, and asking what their perceived benefits were from their plant-based (or lack of plant-based) diet, a section on the Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance (SATAQ-4), and finally, the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS). The status of participants being plant-based or non-plant-based was analyzed as this study sought to explore past research that found plant-based diets to be physically and mentally beneficial (Beezhold et al., 2014; Benefits of Plant-Based Diets, 2021; Daneshzad et al., 2019). A series of statistical tests were conducted on SPSS 28 to analyze which groups (high risk for E.D. and plant-based, high risk for E.D. and non-plant-based, low risk for E.D. and plant-based, or low risk for E.D. and non-plant-based) were statistically significant compared to one another. The findings revealed the plant-based group to contain higher percentage of high risk for eating disorder participants. The plant-based group, regardless of high risk, was negatively associated with higher levels of scores on four out of the five sections including internalization of attitudes towards appearance, weight-based pressures from family, weight-based pressures from peers, and higher levels of reported depression, anxiety, and stress. Pressures felt from the media did not display a statistically significant level of difference between any of the high/low risk and plant-based to high/low risk and non-plant-based. The results were interpreted using social learning theory, which proposes that humans have evolved an advanced capacity for observational learning, enabling them to acquire knowledge, attitudes, values, emotional proclivities, and competencies through information conveyed by a rich variety of actual and symbolic models (Bandura, 2002). This allowed for cause and effects to be hypothesized for why the plant-based group was negatively associated with worse mental health and internalization of attitudes towards appearance. Among these hypothesized causes included participants adopting a plant-based diet due to its growing social media popularity, users learning from observation and leading to aquired knowledge, attitudes, values, and beliefs on the diet. Furthermore, those with an obsession of clean-eating could have led many high-risk for E.D. participants to fulfill their internalized thin-ideal and pressure from family and peers regarding appearance through this popular diet they have observed through social media, which would be consistent with previous studies (Holmgren, 2017; Stewart & Ogden, 2020). Limitations include the small sample size of plant-based dieters without equal representation of low to high risk for E.D.s, along with the limitation on not knowing the reasoning why each participant is plant-based (ethical, environmental, health, diet purposes, or due to social learning and popularity) nor for how long they have adhered to this lifestyle. Future research should expand this study to more locations, analyze for differences based on age groups, and build upon the current study to allow for more generalizability.

Digital marknadsföring av ohälsosam mat till barn och ungdomar : En strukturerad litteraturstudie / Digital marketing of unhealthy food to children and adolescents : A structured literature reviewIlczuk, Sandra January 2024 (has links)
Introduction: The digital development has created new market opportunities within the food industry, especially on social media where advertising unhealthy foods to children and adolescents is becoming increasingly prevalent. This trend raises concerns considering the rising prevalence of overweight and obesity among youth, which is associated with several health risks. Hence, an updated literature review is needed to shed light on the companies' strategies and their impact on this age group's dietary habits and behaviors. Aim: The study aimed to gain a deeper understanding of food companies' current digital marketing strategies to advertise their products to children and adolescents aged 11–19 within the EU, along with their impact on the age groups' dietary habits and behaviors. Methods: The study methodology involved a structured literature review using an inductive approach which included ten original research articles. Each article underwent quality assessment before being analyzed through thematic analysis. Results: The thematic analysis revealed three main themes: marketing strategies, exposure to unhealthy food on social media, and indirect marketing through consumer behavior. These were further explained through seven subthemes: embedded marketing, influencer marketing, tailored and flexible marketing, children, adolescents, social comparison and group affiliation, and symbolic value. Conclusion: Food companies employed entertaining and interactive marketing strategies, influencers, and customized advertisements based on age, trends, and norms. Children and adolescents were subjected to significant quantities of this marketing which could negatively impact their dietary habits. Moreover, marketing could indirectly influence behavior through social comparison, group affiliation, or by assigning symbolic value to products.

Conclusion. / Context. More and more children go to daycare centres and have their meals in these settings. Caregivers are role models whose attitudes and feeding practices may contribute to the development of children's eating habits. However, few studies have been conducted on this subject.
Objectives. To describe the attitudes and strategies of caregivers working in daycare settings with respect to children’s diets and identify dominant feeding styles.
Methodology. Data collection was conducted by means of a survey on the www.nospetitsmangeurs.org website. A total of 86 statements were used to document the feeding styles and practices of caregivers as revealed through eight scenarios: a main dish not liked by the caregiver, a specific food not liked by a child, a new meal refused by children, a picky eater who does not want to eat, a child who is not hungry, an overweight little girl, a underweight girl and a child who has not finished his/her meal.
Statistical analysis. Descriptive statistics, reliability scales and correlations were generated. T tests for paired samples were also used to assess the relative importance of feeding styles.
Results. A total of 371 respondents completed the questionnaire. Overall, the caregivers use a democratic feeding style. They mentioned being role models for the children. They also encourage children to eat and they favor division of responsibilities. However, the most widely used feeding practice related to the authoritarian style is the pressure to eat, a practice contrary to the division of responsibilities concept.
Conclusion. This study indicates that caregivers demonstrate positive attitudes towards child feeding. Despite some discrepancies with respect to strategies used, these results are encouraging since a democratic feeding style allows children to recognize their hunger and satiety cues.

Context: Since 1985, the main objective of the Association des services de garde en milieu scolaire du Québec (ASGEMSQ) has been to improve the quality of child care services in schools so that each child could develop in an environment that contributes to its well-being and growth. In partnership with Québec en forme, ASGEMSQ joined a national movement searching to promote healthy lifestyles and initiated actions leading to the development of environment conductive to healthy eating and physical activities in school child care services. To this end, child care providers definitively play a decisive role.
Objective: The main objectives of this research are to study the perceptions of school-age child care providers in Quebec with regards to the meal period and the factors that may impair its development, as well as to identify their training needs in nutrition.
Methodology: During fall 2014, an electronic survey was sent to 1655 child care providers from Quebec schools. Descriptive statistics and chi-square tests were conducted (SPSS, version 17.01).
Results: In total, 624 responses were obtained, a 38% response rate. The meal context appears to be a relatively pleasant moment for the majority of children and educators. Different obstacles had statistically significant relationship with the perception of the meal context as being enjoyable for the majority of children, namely failure from parents to comply with instructions regarding lunch box content, children personal eating pace, the need to appropriately support children with special needs, non-compliance to the school code of conduct and the general attitude of the school's staff. The results show considerable interest from child care providers in various nutrition training activities. Moreover, specific training themes have a statistically significant relationship with obstacles related to a favorable meal context and to certain characteristics of the environment likely to impact them.
Conclusion: The data confirm training needs and the importance to support partnerships with school and parents so that the meal context represents enjoyable moments. Elementary school day care is an environment to be documented. It constitutes a living environment that a majority of children experiment on a daily base. In collaboration with child-care center managers, school principals and parents, actions can be planned to create environments that support the adoption of healthy lifestyles. This transversal study conducted in Quebec's elementary schools contributed to the study on the importance of the environments on overall healthy lifestyles.
