ASMR, Spectrograms, and Adam Young: Shaping a Genre Through Frequencies

McMullen, Cheyenne 01 June 2021 (has links)
Spectrogram analysis of the most popular works of Adam Young’s four major projects; Owl City, Sky Sailing, Port Blue, and The Score Project. Spectrograms reveal several elements separate to what waveforms can show, and better show elements like frequency saturation, frequency ranges, overtones, and timbral sections. All these elements also can be used to better describe the phenomenon of the Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR) and can also be seen on a spectrogram. Because of the ability to see these different elements, a spectrogram provides a good vehicle to analyze and compare elements of Young’s works and ASMR.After analysis, Young’s works show similar types of spectrograms to ASMR content, but the link between the influences between the two is not certain, it is probable that popular music and the ASMR phenomenon are linked in some measurable way. This thesis provides insight into how to further and continue music and ASMR research.

Cutting Edge Microgeometry, Modeling and EE-Honing

Zarif, Yussefian Nima 10 1900 (has links)

This thesis presents the proof-of-concept of electro-erosion edge (EE) honing as a novel edge preparation process that is based on micro-shaping of the cutting edges of metal cutting tools by electro discharge machining (EDM). This process in its simplest form is first applied to straight edge high speed steel cutting tools which results in a four-fold enhancement in the lives of these tools as compared to the sharp unprepared ones. In the next step the EE-honing application is expanded to hone carbide tools of a complex geometry through the innovative idea of using foil counterfaces. Foil counterface ensures the uniform processing of the entire edge length irrespective of macrogeometric complexities such as curvilinear cutting edges and nose radii. By employing this technique, cutting tools of a complex geometry can be prepared with only 13% edge radius variation which is significantly lower than 40% variation reported for conventional edge preparation processes. ED-machining of cemented carbides necessitates the systematic identification of optimal process parameters to preserve process stability and surface integrity. It is shown that by the application of optimal EE-honing process parameters, EE-honed tools achieved the same life of conventionally prepared ones with the same radii. The advent of advanced edge preparation techniques like EE-honing process has led to the emergence of engineered cutting edge microgeometries most of which cannot be represented by a single edge radius value. In this regard, a novel idea of using parametric quadratic curves for comprehensive cutting edge characterization is presented in the next part of this thesis. The free-knot B-spline approximation enables the unique identification of cutting edge separation points from the clearance and rake faces. Subsequent to the edge identification, quadratic parametric polynomials are employed to characterize the cutting edge by four characterization parameters. These parameters are contour-based and easy to visualize. As the final part of the thesis, the EE-honing process is simulated numerically to gain a better insight into the process. Simulation can model the generation of symmetrical and asymmetrical edges and predict edge geometry with the maximum of 14% error.
/ Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Development of an EDM-tool for theNuclear Industry / Utveckling av ett EDM-verktyg förkärnkraftsindustrin

Kaya, Rabi, Ödling, Anders January 2014 (has links)
Electric Discharge Machining (EDM) is a machining method suitable for repair and maintenance operations in nuclear power plants. Crack removal and material sampling are two common operations where EDM is used in the nuclear power industry. Each crack removal or material sampling operation is unique, a new EDM-tool is therefore designed for every operation. This, together with the fact that the electrode used in the EDM-tool usually wears out before the crack is removed or the sample has been collected, is the foundation of this thesis. The objective was to develop one or several concepts of a modular EDM-tool with the ability to change electrode at repair location. This to shorten the development time for EDM-tools and the time for electrode change during an EDM operation. The concepts would be developed to the extent that a prototype could be manufactured and tested. The result is in accordance to the objective with one fully developed concept ready for manufacturing. It has not yet been manufactured, and therefore not been tested. There are still some sections of the tool that needs to be verified, for example the electric supply to the electrode. The concept consists of; a slim EDM-tool with the ability to lock the rotating electrode shaft, compact dielectric fluid- and electric-supply, hydraulic actuator with belt drive and an electrode magazine with place for 3 electrodes. Comparing the Feasibility of Cutting Thin-Walled Sections from Five Commonly Used Metals Utilizing Wire Electric Discharge Machining

Stephenson, Richard C. 11 July 2007 (has links) (PDF)
Wire Electric Discharge Machining (wire-EDM) is a non-traditional machining process. Controlled electric sparks are successively used to vaporize part of a workpiece along a programmed path in order to machine a desired part. Because there is no tool that comes in direct contact with the workpiece, it is possible to machine thin, delicate parts. This thesis was designed to observe and analyze the differences in cutting capabilities for a conventional wire-EDM machine when cutting thin-walled sections from five commonly used metals utilizing a variation of roughing and finishing passes. The five metals that were used in this study are: Aluminum 6061 T6, Yellow Brass SS360, 420 Stainless Steel, D2 Tool Steel at 25 to 30 RC, and D2 Tool Steel at 60 to 65 RC. The thin-walled sections were constrained on each end by the parent material to which they remained attached, and they ranged in thickness from 0.05 millimeters (0.002 inches) increasing incrementally by 0.05 millimeters (0.002 inches) until they reached a thickness of 0.30 millimeters (0.012 inches). A Sodick AQ325L wire-EDM machine was employed to perform the machining. It was observed that differences exist in the capabilities of cutting thin-walled sections from the five different metals. This could be both observed visually through inspection and statistically through the analysis of each data set obtained by measuring the resultant thickness of each section. It was also observed that differences exist for the same material while utilizing the variations of cutting parameters: a roughing with no finishing passes, a roughing with one finishing pass, and a roughing with three finishing passes. Thus both the material properties and the cutting parameters play a significant role in determining the capability of cutting thin-walled sections with a wire-EDM machine.

Salomaa, Max January 2024 (has links)
In this artistic thesis project, I explore the graphic line, a qualitative analysis method that maps the structure, instrumentation, arrangement, and sound design of music in a DAW through a combination of music production, analysis, and theoretical inquiry. By focusing on electronic dance music (EDM) and its rapid evolution within popular culture, I analyzed three EDM tracks using the graphic line in Ableton Live and created three new tracks based on these analyses. The aim is to promote musical practice by identifying key processes and events in music and creating tools for music production. The graphic line is a method that originates from my need to discover patterns in the music I work with. Through this research, I have been able to articulate my workflow and insights into the use of musical templates. To deepen understanding of the graphic line's application within EDM, I have integrated previous research on tonality, rhythm, and other musical aspects within the genre. This research contributes to the study of electronic dance music and provides perspectives on the use of the graphic line as a tool for musical exploration and creation.

Funkenerosives Bohren mit großen Aspektverhältnissen

Munz, Markus 01 June 2015 (has links) (PDF)

Avaliação do desempenho de fluidos dielétricos no processo de usinagem por descargas elétricas / Evaluation of performance of dielectric fluids for electrical discharge machining process

Arantes, Luciano José 14 December 2001 (has links)
Universidade Federal de Uberlândia / The Electrical Discharge Machining process is very useful while machining very hard materials, which are very difficult to be machined by traditional processes, while can make complex geometries and minimum dimensions. One of the materials that are used in this process is highspeed steels, which are very hard and has a high mechanical resistance. The main objective of this work is the study of performance of different dielectric fluids used in EDM in different cut conditions in terms or metal removal rate (MMR) and wear ratio (WR) roughness parameter (Ra). A discuss of the most important factors that can produce different performance when machining with this process is presented. Five tests with different types of dielectric fluids using a cooper tool were carried out. Was noticed different performance between the fluids, which all the other conditions of operation were unchanged. According to the fluid the workpiece presented less roughness and a higher MMR in some cases. In other cases, a higher MMR produced in the other hand a recast layer less uniform. The most important conclusion of this work is about kerosene, which costs 3 times less than the specific dielectric fluids for EDM, presented worst finishing surfaces and not too high MMR as expected, despite all the risks for the operator.
