Molina García, Erika January 2012 (has links)

Magic and the supernatural in eighteenth-century Wales : the world of the Rev. Edmund Jones (1702-1793)

Coward, Adam January 2012 (has links)
The Rev. Edmund Jones (1702-1793), the 'Old Prophet' of the Transh, Pontypool, is a fascinating character for many reasons, not least of which is his writing on apparitions, spirits, fairies, and magic in his Geographical, Historical, and Religious Account of the Parish of Aberystruth (1779) and Relation of Apparitions of Spirits in the Principality of Wales (1780). These works were not merely written for an antiquarian purpose, but rather present a defence of Jones's deep-seated belief in these spirits' existence. On the surface, such a belief, professed so late in the eighteenth century, may seem 'unenlightened' or atavistic, but far from it, Jones's belief was consistent with his overarching cultural worldview which was set within and influenced by the environment in which he lived. This study examines that environment in an attempt to understand the contexts and formation of Jones beliefs and writings. It begins by examining the socio-economic changes occurring in eighteenth-century north-western Monmouthshire, focusing on changes in transport and communication, industry and social composition, literacy and the availability of printed word, the medical industry, and systems of charity and welfare; and the impact of these different social elements on the way in which the supernatural was conceptualized in local culture. The second section focuses on Jones's role as a religious figure involved in the eighteenth-century religious Revival and the state of religion in the area before turning to Jones's theology and how this impacted on his conceptualization of spirits and their interaction with the mundane realm. The study then turns to the intellectual environment in which Jones wrote and how his works fit with contemporary intellectual trends. Finally, the thesis examines the folkloric content of Jones's works and the ways in which all of the disparate environmental elements discussed throughout demonstrate themselves in his writings.

Art Installations In The Desert: A Participant Observation Study Of The Art Of Real Life Burning Man And Second Life Burn2

January 2014 (has links)
abstract: Black Rock City is a temporary city existing for one week in the harsh desert of northern Nevada. It plays host to the Burning Man festival with over 300 large-scale art installations and is considered to be the largest interactive art festival in the world. Besides the main burn, smaller local regional events have developed. These regional events encompass many of the same tenets as Burning Man including the presentation of large-scale art. Burn2 is the regional event held on the virtual world, Second Life. In 2013, both events used the theme of Cargo Cult as a stepping off point for the artists. Through the lens of spectacle, I used art criticism as a way to gain understanding of the artworks. Art criticism is a means of interpreting and appreciating artwork and is often used in the art classroom. Edmund Feldman's method promotes a deeper understanding of art and consists of four steps: description, formal analysis, interpretation and judgment. Using Feldman's method, I analyzed three artworks from the 2013 Burning Man festival and three works from Burn2. From interviews, photographs, and personal observations I analyzed the artworks. I used external analysis to compare the literature on similar festivals and the artworks with other events held in the real life and virtual world. I found in both events very similar concepts and themes. Artists had specific subject matter in mind when designing their installations. Artists used the theme as a stepping off point for rationalizing their content. Art made to be displayed at Burning Man was expensive; funding was a concern for all the artists. Burn2 artists were free from funding concerns even though there were expenses to making art in Second Life. Emerging themes were use of building materials and color, use of electronics and computer technology, art installations in festivals, spectacle, collaboration, and interactivity. Further implications included teaching about the engineering of structures, critical thinking about festival themes and the individual art installations, visual culture, and art making with these emerging art forms. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Curriculum and Instruction 2014

Fenomenologia da inclusividade

Junglos, Márcio January 2014 (has links)
Made available in DSpace on 2014-07-18T02:01:34Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 1 000459289-Texto+Completo-0.pdf: 904643 bytes, checksum: 494bba68668b2082672ac959477f8cff (MD5) Previous issue date: 2014 / The text of the Phenomenology of inclusiveness characterizes itself as a new work in the area of phenomenology. Seeking phenomenological sources in Husserl, Merleau-Ponty, and Waldenfels, the text attempts to develop inclusiveness in order to contemplate the inclusive/exclusive paradox and, moreover, to show its efficacy in measuring the inclusive scope of any ethical theory ever developed. From Husserl, we find the basis for a phenomenology of inclusiveness, which was put forth in his Krisis. In order to solve the constitutive paradoxes, Husserl nurtures the idea of an inclusive basis. Such inclusiveness is characterized by a latent reflective attitude, an attitude of inclusion in the lifeworld, an attitude of not closing our thesis, and, finally, an attitude that avoids the reductionism of the subjective and objective poles. With the radicality of thought from Merleau-Ponty, the text presents support for a complicity of meaning. Now, the subject sees his/herself as complicit in his/her relationship with the liveworld thus withdrawing the heavy burden that previously was placed solely on the subject as the ultimate endower of all meaning. The constitutive process entails a radical attitude that enables an incarnate inclusiveness, conveying the inclusive scope to the horizontality of life. However, as Waldenfels investigated the progress of ethical theory, he added an ethical-practical character to the constitutive dimension. Waldenfels emphasized an inevitable response before any thesis, due to our being in the world, as an event that just happens, regardless of our will or objectivications. Such responsiveness promotes the threshold of the senses as a responsive ethical possibility. In response itself, we find a responsive content that is not objectified, guiding us to the thresholds, considering them as possibilities and not as threats. For Waldenfels, what was previously excluded from the established order appears at the threshold, providing inclusive opportunities. After these considerations, the text reveals an inclusiveness which is open, latent, included in the lifeworld, non-reductionist, complicit in the constitutive process, and has an ethically responsive character. Although the studied authors do not work directly with the theme of inclusiveness, we examine sufficient sources to propose a method of phenomenology that demonstrates inclusivity, i. e., that is phenomenologically inclusive. Although the method is neither a measure nor a foundation, nevertheless it provides a base that serves as the measure and foundation of all morality ever built. Thus, we can measure the inclusive scope of all ethics and see how far the inclusivity extends, but yet not present inclusivity as the determinative basis. The foundation of the base is phenomenological, i. e., predicted within the latency and horizontality of the lifeworld.

Singh, Linda January 2015 (has links)

Aspects of temperance in Spencer and Milton

Sexton, James Penman January 1971 (has links)
The purpose of the thesis is first to anatomize the concept of "temperance," studying it in its Classical and Christian contexts. After having done so I examine the use of the concept in Spenser's Faerie Queene, Book II and in a series of works by Milton. We see that "temperance" is a many-sided term, variously defined as "quietness," "modesty," "doing one's own work," and "self-knowledge." Since its linguistic prototype was the Greek sophrosyne, the notion of "order" and "harmony" also carries over to the word "temperance." It becomes clear that temperance has cosmological significance--it is a manifestation of the orderly universe with regard to personal morality. As such it is an instrument of God's grace against the forces of Satanic disorder and intemperance. Temperance served to keep the Christian hero alive to grace and able to respond to it when the right moment arrived, only after much trial. Temperance, then, helps man to weather the state of trial which comes before the state of glory and makes him worthy of felicity. In Chapter One, the notion of temperance is examined with reference to various Classical and Christian works, thus uncovering a wide range of meanings for the term. Chapter Two is devoted to a chronological journey through Spenser's Book of Temperance, and showing how Spenser was alive to the tradition behind him. The third chapter examines Comus, Paradise Lost, Paradise Regained and Samson Agonistes and in so doing underscores Milton's understanding of and concern with temperance. / Arts, Faculty of / English, Department of / Graduate

A Common Man Trapped inside the Queen’s Body

Palacios, Alexandra Sofia 14 November 2013 (has links)
My thesis proposes a feminist-queer reading of Edmund Spenser’s The Faerie Queene in response to Julian Wolfreys’ “The ‘Endlesse Worke’ of Transgression”. I examine the challenges to male authority that the low-born poet, Spenser, faced when he presented his manual for the formation of new English subjects to his sovereign queen, Elizabeth I. The Prefatory Letter to Raleigh and passages from the 1590 version of the epic provide evidence to support the view that traditional hierarchical male/female binaries may have been destabilized by the presence of an unmarried queen. My thesis also supplements Wolfreys’ essay with historical information regarding Mary Tudor and Mary Stuart in order to underscore the ethnocentric aspect of the process of “othering” that takes place in The Faerie Queene.

Pojem objektu v Husserlově fenomenologii a jeho předobraz v Aristotelově Metafyzice / The Notion of an Object in Husserl's Phenomenology and it's Preview in Aristotle's Metaphysics

Zavřel, Viktor January 2021 (has links)
The presented dissertation aims to present the concept of an object, which we can observe in Husserl's phenomenological philosophy. It highlights the four basic meanings of an object and tries to connect them. This work also presents a comprehensive history of key metaphysical concepts, mainly through analyzes of Aristotle's Metaphysics and interpretations of his philosophical theories over the ages. Emphasis is placed especially on the concept of οὐσία and on the changes in the understanding of this term in Medieval and Early Modern philosophy.
