The dilemma of a theoretical framework for the training of education support services staff within inclusive education

Hay, J. January 2012 (has links)
Published Article / The medical biological and ecosystemic models are two paradigms which are currently making a huge impact on education support services on an international level. The medical biological model has been dominating the way in which multidisciplinary support has been delivered within 20th-century special education. However, with the advent of inclusive education, the ecosystemic model has initially been pushed to the fore as the preferred metatheory of support services. This article specifically interrogates these two conflicting paradigms in education support services within the South African schooling and higher education bands, as well as Bronfenbrenner's integration of these models with regard to the bio-ecological model. Finally, this article proposes the bio-ecosystemic framework according to which the training of multidisciplinary education support services staff should proceed in order to ensure a sound and less conflicting theoretical framework.

Overcoming by degrees : exploring care leavers' experiences of higher education in England

Hyde-Dryden, Georgia January 2013 (has links)
Existing research has shown that care leavers are one of the most disadvantaged groups in society and are at particular risk of experiencing negative long-term outcomes including unemployment, homelessness and mental health problems. This thesis makes a contribution to knowledge in this area by focusing upon a group of care leavers about whom very little is currently known: care leavers in higher education. These are young people who despite the odds, have succeeded educationally and are overcoming their early disadvantage to make a successful transition from care into adulthood. This thesis uses Bourdieu's theory on transformation and reproduction in society and the concepts of capital, field and habitus to explore care leavers' experiences of higher education. It considers how the support available to care leavers from their local authorities and higher education institutions has developed since Jackson and colleagues (2005) Going to University from Care study first highlighted deficits in the level of support provided to care leavers. This thesis also compares the experiences of care leavers with students from other disadvantaged backgrounds to understand where care leavers have specific support needs as a result of not being supported at university by their birth parents. Finally, this thesis considers the impact of the Buttle UK Quality Mark, developed in response to the findings of Jackson and colleagues (2005) and awarded to universities demonstrating a commitment to supporting care leavers.

Educator' perspectives on collaboration in Institutional Level Support Teams (ILSTs) of schools in the Wynberg, Grassy Park and Pelican Park area

Parker, Rianah-Leigh Marr January 2013 (has links)
Magister Educationis - MEd / South Africa has a history of inequalities due to the Apartheid system, much of this is reflected in Educational policies regarding Special Education, Specialised Education and Educational Support Services resulting in inadequate education. "Education White Paper 6", (Department of Education, 2006) is a response by the South African government to the inequalities, which constitute as barriers to learning. The key to reducing barriers to learning at all levels of education lies in the strengthening of Education Support Services, (Department of Education, 2001). Thus Support Services Systems are established at various levels including National, Provincial, Regional, and Education Districts and at Institutional Level. At the level of Institutions, Institutional Level Support Teams are established as a school -based team, with its primary function to put in place learner and educator support services. Institutional Level Support Teams (ILSTs) are expected to co-opt expertise from the school community, collaborate with the local community, parents and the District department of education. The Institutional Level Support Teams are expected to collaborate or form partnership to achieve their common goals and successful achievement of their objectives. The main objective of this study was to gain insight into educator's perspectives on collaboration or forming partnership with other members of their schools' ILSTs. These perspectives related to the attitudes educators have towards collaboration in the ILST, the benefits they consider deriving from their work at the ILST, the activities they involve themselves in and the challenges they face while collaborating with other members of their schools' ILST. The study adopted a mixed methods approach and involved teachers of four high schools in the Western Cape. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected using questionnaire and interview protocol. The results of the analysis of quantitative and qualitative data collected for the study revealed that the educators who participated in the study expressed fairly positive attitudes towards collaborating with other stakeholders in the ILSTs. The participants felt that their participation in the schools' ILSTs was beneficial to the learners, parents and educators. All activities presented to them on the questionnaire were endorsed as those they participated in while collaborating with others in their schools' ILSTs. The participants also indicated that they experienced a number of challenges while collaborating with others in their schools ILSTs. These challenges include a lack of parental and community involvement as well as poor guidelines on the operations of ILST by the Department of Education. The study provides recommendation as to how to improve collaboration in the ILST.

As Ciências da Terra e do Universo e suas possibilidades interdisciplinares: um estudo com alunos do 5º ano do Ensino Fundamental / AS CIÊNCIAS DA TERRA E DO UNIVERSO E SUAS POSSIBILIDADES INTERDISCIPLINARES: UM ESTUDO COM ALUNOS DO 5º ANO DO ENSINO FUNDAMENTAL

Leite, Carolina Silveira 04 April 2019 (has links)
Astronomy is one of the most ancient sciences created by humanity. Perhaps its because of the fascination of observing the stars and wondering what were they doing there that human beings improved the tools that allow us to see beyond our eyes. Even though its an ancient science it remains modern and is in constant transformation, and its contributions are revelant up until now. In an educational context, Astronomy has the potential to fascinate, although what we experience in practice is the devaluation of its importance due the approach of the theme in classrooms, which is at times inadequate. Teachers, in general, present themselves unprepared to explain such complex matters, making several mistakes based on textbooks. The proposal of this work was the elaboration of an interdisciplinary didactic sequence to work with topics related to basic concepts regarding Earth and Space/Astronomical Sciences, with a focus on the solar system, and the comparison of the differences between Earth and the other planets. The didactic sequence was planned according to the validation in the EAR (elaboration, application and re-elaboration) for fifth grade students. Its result is the organization of a teachers guide so that any education professional can use and adapt it to his/her context. The main point of this proposal is to promote a broadening of Astronomy and Earth Science studies in schools in order to offer primary school teachers activities that provide a meaningful and motivating learning experience, stimulating the acquisition of scientific literacy through investigation and research. With this work we hope to encourage the comprehension that Astromomy and Earth studies can contribute within all the knowledge areas.

No. of bitstreams: 1 NILZE HELENA DÉROULÈDE.pdf: 830924 bytes, checksum: d252453b613ad21aeb3cc078fae6c067 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2002-08-01 / In this study, the inclusive education is approached, having been chosen, as theme, the Support Section in the School Inclusive Process as part of a the Reference Unit’s Project, recently developed by the Superintendency Special Teaching of the Goiás' Education's State General Office which has for purpose to give support to the inclusive actions in the state and municipal nets of teaching's schools. The Support Section is formed by multiprofessionals teams and it’s considered by many authors as a facilitative resource and a mediator of the teacher's pedagogic and educational practices, of the school and family, by representing the possibility of contributing and providing conditions for more appropriated services aiming the development of each student's special education needs. To make possible the research, a qualitative approach was used and, as methodological way, the microethnography line which searches for the unit analysis as a cutting instance that conserves the properties of the whole that it’s intended to investigate. This way, was analyzed the work developed by one of the Support Section's teams of the Maria Lusia de Oliveira Reference’s Unit with the State School President Dutra, in Goiânia, discussing this team's performance and its relationships with the school, with two teachers and with a Syndrome of Down's student and her family. It searched to discover the contributions that have been offered by the Support Section to the teachers' educational practice and the support forms given to the school community, seeking the understanding and the internalization of the social value of the opportunities' equality and of the differences' respect and acceptance. The referencial used is the socialinteractionism model that is ruled by the cooperation, the mediation and by the interaction between the professionals' team and the school community involved. The investigation's demanded results take to consider that the work developed by the Support Section, observed its limitations and after some structural adjustments, is important, has potential and is possible as a base to sustain the inclusive education improvement. The Support Section can contribute, as partner of the regular teaching, in the sense of showing, through sensitization actions and educational and pedagogic actions, the differences' social value, inside the same education space, where all can learn together, in a reciprocal change of efficiencies, despite the differences.

Pradinių klasių pedagogų požiūris į mokinių, turinčių kalbėjimo, kalbos ir komunikacijos sutrikimų, ugdymą / Primary school teachers' attitude towards pupils who have speech, language and communication disorders

Plikaitytė, Aura 30 July 2013 (has links)
Siekiant užsibrėžto tikslo tyrimui naudota anketa bei interviu. Tyrime dalyvavo 100 pradinių klasių pedagogų iš įvairių miesto pradinių bei vidurinių mokyklų. / Pupils with speech, language and communication disorders in secondary schools face specific difficulties caused by impaired or underdevelopped language skills. Students must be given individualized support. And one of the major donors is the teacher. The hypothesis shows that teachers in collaboration with the school speech therapists and other specialists from different institutions actively participate in children‘s with language and communication disorders educational process and assist them in dealing with these problems. An empirical study is made to find out teachers' approach to students with speech, language and communication disorders. In order to achieve the objective study a questionnaire and an interview are used. The study involved 100 primary school teachers from various primary and secondary schools in town.
