Parent Engagement and Cultural Capital: Negotiating Culture in a Multilingual/Multiethnic School

Echeverri-Sucerquia, Paula Andrea 01 August 2010 (has links)
This study explored how a multicultural/multilingual school negotiated culture with limited English proficient (LEP) students' families, particularly in the context of parent involvement activities. In order to understand how such negotiation of culture occurred, the researcher focused on the perspectives that school administrators, teachers and parents of students in an English as a Second Language (ESL) program had on the education of LEP students and their parents' involvement in school-organized activities. It also focused on the participants' understandings of cultural capital and the extent to which the school builds on immigrant /sojourner families' knowledge and culture to support their children's education. In this ethnographical study, the researcher used a variety of data collection procedures: a questionnaire for teachers and parents, document analysis, interviews, and participant observation. While results from the questionnaires show that teachers and parents had similar views of LEP student education and parent involvement, more detailed information gathered through interviews and observations show that school personnel and immigrant/sojourner parents held different perspectives and expectations. Moreover, the results revealed that cultural capital, social class, and parents' educational attainment level influence the way parents understand the academic and social expectations of the school's dominant culture and their interactions with school personnel. Likewise, cultural biases influence school administrators and teachers' perceptions and interactions with parents from ethnic/linguistic minority groups.

Intelectuais na vida pública: Mário de Andrade e Monteiro Lobato / Intellectuals in the public life: Mário de Andrade and Monteiro Lobato

Mello, Neide Moraes de 02 March 2007 (has links)
This thesis compares the action and public life os two intellectuals that played a significative roll among discussions about modernization of Brazil and projects for the country that involved them during 20\'s and 30\'s years. From the analysis of the activities of Departamento de Cultura of São Paulo city\'s prefecture between 1934 and 1938 headed by modernist author Mário de Andrade, and of life and works of writer and publisher Monteiro Lobato, is attempted to value their attitudes facing the inexorable modernization of an agrarian and exporter society like the brazilian one, reactive and defensive by the first of them, and of active adhesion to north-american affluent society model and to inner market by the other. It defends also that inner coherence of Lobato\'s proposed model fructified in public sphare, having State of Vargas assumed several of his causes like steel industry and oil, and among individuals, in so far as the \"developmentist pedagogy\" that elaborated, if it did\'n reach expressive material results, political education inlaid in it engendered a generation of the boldest and most combative militants in history of the country, by it indirectly encouraged to armed fight.

Cultural influences on knowledge sharing in Kuwaiti Higher education institution : a case study approach

Said Ali, Maha M. January 2009 (has links)
Knowledge sharing is an important element of knowledge management initiatives in organisations. It is well established in literature that cultural issues play an important role in influencing knowledge sharing practices. This research addresses cultural aspects that influence knowledge sharing within an academic environment. A single case study approach was adopted to explore the influence of culture on knowledgesharing practices within a Kuwaiti higher education institution known as PAAET. The complexity of the issues surrounding how PAAET operates necessitates the use of both quantitative and qualitative methods. Therefore, this research brings together evidence from a range of data collection tools. Thus, the literature review, the findings from a questionnaire survey, interviews and focus groups, and information from existing documents were analysed in order to identify how to promote an effective knowledge-sharing culture at the selected case study organisation. This research adds to the body of knowledge on "knowledge sharing" and extends this knowledge by addressing a total of twenty different factors categorised under four main headings: individual, organisational, national, and cross-cultural issues that both impede and facilitate knowledge sharing within a culture that is very complicated and very different from the Western culture. In addition, this research provides insight into how thesei ssuesm ight be addressedb y recommendings ome actionablep roposalsf or the authorities in the Kuwaiti higher education institute. These proposals offer some issues that could be considered when investigating and implementing successful and effective knowledge-sharing strategies. This research also provides the necessary theoretical underpinning to further develop the topic of knowledge sharing within complex institutions that are influenced by a multiplicity of factors. The research demonstrates that better performance and improved productivity can be achieved by implementing a coherent and balanced knowledge-sharing framework.

Andrade, Paula Deporte de January 2016 (has links)
This research paper presents, analyzes and discusses the conditions connected to the emergence, dissemination and uses of cultural pedagogies in the field of Cultural Studies in Education, particularly in Brazil. Aiming at building up a map that allows us to think about the conditions that enable the possibility of using this concept as a theoretical tools, this research is executed within the post-structuralism referential universe of cultural studies, in order to map out some of the lines that make up the contours that this theoretical construct presents currently. By following and articulating these lines, the purpose is to explore the backgrounds of this concept, as well as to make evident the processes that allowed for its (re)invention within the academic context of the Graduate Program in Education (PPGEDU) at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). In order to explore the intersections identified, we make use of the concept of innovation, in the sense devised by Durval Muniz de Albuquerque Junior, and adopting an investigation step-by-step procedure as proposed by Edward Said, In order to understand cultural pedagogies, this paper uses as references the studies carried out by authors that address both the history of pedagogy, such as Viviane Camozzato, Franco Cambi and Carlos Noguera-Ramirez, and the history of culture, such as Raymond Williams and Zygmunt Bauman. This research was developed in three distinct stages. In the first one, there was the analysis of the contributions made by David Trend, Henry Giroux, Shirley Steinberg, Joe Kinchloe and Elizabeth Ellsworth, researchers associated to historical accounts regarding the emergence and the various ramifications of the concept. In the second stage, in order to identify and understand the importing conditions linked to the field of ideas and the (re)invention of the concept related to it, interviews were executed with four teaching professionals who experienced the implementation of the Line of Research in Cultural Studies in Education at PPGEDU/UFRGS. We also tracked down the first texts translated on the topic that approach the pedagogical nature of cultural artifacts and introduce the concept of cultural pedagogies. In the third stage, we analyzed Master's degree and PhD studies indicated by the teaching professionals interviewed, in order to detail the use and productiveness of this theoretical construct as a tool of analysis. The investigation works that have been carried out and articulated show the threads that allow us to see the weft that make up this (re)invention process, that have as emergence conditions: the possibility of new perspectives for research in education that brought Cultural Studies; hybridisation between Cultural Studies and Foucault's theory; the relationship between Cultural Studies and Education. Such mapping activity makes evident how the concept of cultural pedagogies is assisting in the questioning, nuancing and diversification regarding the understanding of pedagogy, as well as in the exploration of the pedagogical qualities present in social life, thus becoming a powerful theoretical tool to be used in the works addressing the articulation between Cultural Studies and Education.

GÊNERO E ETNIA: O QUE OS DOCUMENTOS OFICIAIS REVELAM SOBRE EDUCAÇÃO E DIVERSIDADE

The general objective of this study is to analyze, along with the official documents of Brazilian education, from 1990 to the year 2015, the attributed meanings to gender and ethnic-racial diversity, and their impact on the political pedagogical projects of Basic Education. And specific objectives were: to understand the political project of the World Bank and international organizations for educational policies, especially in relation to diversity; to present the main discussions on gender, race and ethnicity in the International Conferences, from 1990 to 2015; to analyze the political, economic and socio-cultural foundations that constitute principles in the formulation and implementation of diversity policies (gender and ethnic-racial). The theoretical bases that supported this research were the studies on culture, especially the studies of Raymond Willians; the concept of identity, difference and multiculturalism (HALL, 2003) and interculturalism (SILVEIRA, 2008). In addition to studies on diversity and education, by CANDAU (1997, 2002, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012), among other authors. Concepts of gender, race, and ethnicity, as well as their overlapping, are discussed through cross-sectional studies (CRENSHAW, 2002). This concept asserts that gender social issues and ethnic-racial relations gain greater discriminatory relevance when perceiving difference within difference. Also, from the studies of Nancy Fraser (2006), the twodimensional model on inequalities is discussed. To understand the focus of this study, educational policies for diversity are presented; the World Bank / UNESCO relationship, with the educational issues of developing countries. The main world conferences and their proposals are related in the construction of an education for diversity, ending with the analysis of the Brazilian legislation (1990 to 2015), on gender and ethnic-racial diversity. It is a qualitative, bibliographical and documentary research, having as methodological procedure the Documentary Analysis. The documentary analysis constitutes a methodological procedure of investigation of the social reality, whose conceptions are broad, being based by diverse philosophical conceptions on the research used in the approaches of positivist nature, as qualitative and of more character that is critical. The results point out that the Brazilian legislation tries to meet certain goals imposed by the World Bank, but it does not want to be in relation to the demands of organized social movements and especially in the alteration of school curricula to meet the social and theoretical perspectives of diversity. ethnic-racial issues have been incorporated more clearly into the curriculum and in the Pedagogical Political Projects, while gender issues appear little in the document and still less in the school curriculum.

An investigation into the implementation of the developmental appraisal system in a primary school in the Kwazulu-Natal Department of Education and Culture.

Motilal, G. B. January 2002 (has links)
In this research study I shall examine the recently introduced Developmental Appraisal System. I shall carry out an investigation into the implementation of the Developmental System of Appraisal in a primary school in Kwa-Zulu Natal. The intention of the research is to provide a case study, which will focus on the implementation of the Developmental Appraisal System. In order to achieve this, three main issues of the system will be addressed. These are the conceptualisation of the system; the implementation process and the impact of the process. Although, the results of my research is focussed on one school the results could be illuminative. The final chapter of this study will concentrate on the findings and recommendations for the enhancement of the Developmental Appraisal System. The paper concludes that despite the many positive aspects of the process it is recommended that the whole appraisal system should be revised, revised and re-conceptualised to make it accessible to most South African schools, paying particular attention to simplifying it. / Thesis (M.Ed.)-University of Natal, 2002.
