Evaluation of the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) in selected areas of Virginia: extent and retention of dietary improvement and related family factors

Torisky, Danielle M. January 1987 (has links)
Dietary improvement was assessed using 24-hour food recall in a sample of 180 homemakers who had completed six to 18 months of instruction in the Virginia Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) to determine whether they retained dietary improvement six to 36 months after leaving the program. These homemakers provided additional information on Perceived Educational Gains and Program Benefits received from participating in EFNEP. Family factors were explored which were believed to be related to dietary change - Family Composition, Family Resource Assistance, Household Roles and Responsibilities, Family Support, and Family Diet Control. Diet Scores increased significantly (p<.01) from program Entry to Exit; greatest increases were in average daily servings from milk and fruit-vegetable groups. Slight but significant (p<.01) regression occurred in average Diet Score and servings of milk from Exit to Follow-up. Homemakers with higher Diet Scores at program Entry had higher scores at program Exit and Follow-up, and higher Program Benefit Scores. Length of time in program was not significantly associated with Dietary Improvement or Retention. High average Educational Gain and Program Benefit Scores at Follow-up were evidence that EFNEP was successful from the perspective of homemakers served. Family Composition was not associated with Dietary Improvement. Family Support emerged as the only family measure related to diet; higher Family Support Scores were associated not only with greater Perceived Educational Gains and Program Benefits, but also with higher Diet Scores at program completion and follow-up. Results of the study confirmed the Virginia EFNEP to be effective in improving diets of homemakers and sustaining these changes, and suggested a key role for family support in influencing dietary outcome and program success from the view of participants. / Ph. Application of cost benefit analysis to the expanded food and nutrition education program

Sharman, Katherine L. January 1988 (has links)
In 1981, President Ronald Reagan issued Executive Order 12291 which requires Federal agencies to perform benefits assessments of proposed major regulations and prohibits them from taking regulatory action unless potential benefits exceed potential costs to society. A review of welfare economics literature and applications of the CBA model to health, education, and nutrition is presented. CBA for use in the Cooperative Extension Service Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) is then systematically examined using the following criteria: 1) theoretical considerations - can the economic criterion appropriately be applied to EFNEP?; and 2) application of the CBA model - can it be made operational? Following the critique of application of CBA to EFNEP, conclusions are drawn as to the appropriate use of CBA or alternative techniques in evaluating EFNEP and similar programs. / Doctor of Philosophy

Dietmann, Rebecka, Tilde, Peltoniemi January 2021 (has links)
Interaction is an important aspect for children’s language development. The intervention model Prevention Education Program for Parents (PEPP) is currently under development within the research project Ord gör skillnad, Karolinska Institutet. PEPP is an intervention for parents to children aged 0–12 months who’s recently been diagnosed with hearing impairment. In PEPP parents receive guidance based on the child’s language environment which is mapped through Language ENvironment Analysis (LENA) and video analysis. LENA is a speech processing technological tool that analyzes the child’s language environment. The video analysis is made manually based on short video records of interactions between child and parent. The purpose of this study was to evaluate these mapping methods reliabilities to measure verbal conversational turns. The study also aimed to investigate if there’s a pattern between the amount of verbal conversational turns in a structured playtime and in the home environment. Four families with children aged 0:26–7:3 months participated. The child and parent interacted in a structured playtime that was analyzed with LENA and video analysis. Each family also made a LENA recording for an entire day in their home environment. The amount of verbal conversational turns in the structured playtime was analyzed by two assessors through video analysis. Inter-rater reliability was calculated, and a qualitative assessment was made for intervals in which the inter-rater reliability was <80%. The conformity between video analysis and LENA in the structured playtime was calculated. Further, a comparison was made between the amount of verbal conversational turns measured with LENA in home environment and structured environment. The inter-rater reliability in this study was high and in the qualitative assessment aggravating factors were identified. The conformity between video analysis and LENA analysis of the structured playtime was moderate. The amount of verbal conversational turns was higher for all participants in the structured environment compared to the home environment. This study indicates that video analysis is a reliable method. However, the aggravating aspects should be remedied in order to increase the reliability. The results confirm previous findings that demonstrate limitations with LENA’s ability to measure conversational turns in young infants. This study indicates that the number of conversational turns is higher in structured environments. To ensure the results in this study further research should be conducted.

"Processo de aprendizagem de idosos sobre os benefícios da atividade física" / LEARNING PROCESS OF THE ELDERLY ABOUT THE PHYSICAL ACTIVITY BENEFITS

Okimura, Tiemi 21 March 2005 (has links)
The aim of this research was to analyze the learning process of elderly people about the benefits of physical activity (PA). The research was composed by 42 people over 60 years old. All of them members of the Physical Activity Autonomy Program (PAAP). At the end of first stage of PAAP, the students were interviewed in order to evaluate their learning about the importance of PA and their perception of the learning process. The results revealed that the students: (1) linked their knowledge about PA benefits with physiological effects over their body systems or with the growing older process; (2) associated the importance of PA with improvement of self-steam and self-knowledge of their own abilities and limitations; (3) identified a significant improvement over their social relationship and personal satisfaction as a positive effect, as result of the participation of PAAP; (4) changed the concept of aging; (5) valued the learning about PA and (6) manifested interest to divulge it. The facilitate factors to learning were: interest in learning, association with diary activities and use of prior knowledge. The elements that made the learning difficult were the inadequate spontaneous concepts, decrease of memory, low educational level and lack of oral language. The conclusion was that the students refer to other PA benefits, beside physiologic effects and the knowledge construction was based in aspects of life experience of each elderly.

Educomunicação e políticas públicas: os desafios e as contribuições para o Programa Mais Educação / Educommunication and public policy: the challenges and contributions to the More Education Program

Próspero, Daniele 18 September 2013 (has links)
The educommunication as defined from the perspective of the Center for Communication and Education, University of São Paulo, is a social practice that has resulted in the strengthening of the juvenile leadership who are qualified in both the reception area of media messages (Media Education), and in the use of technology to exercise the universal right to expression (Media Empowerment). Visible in the actions of non-governmental organizations working in Latin America, the concept has to, as its main challenge at the moment, legitimize itself with public policies, to benefit an audience today that is represented by approximately 50 million elementary students in Brazil, including small groups of children. In other words, educommunication faces the challenge of presenting itself as a paradigm, able to mobilize formal education for conceptual changes, aside from teaching or teaching practices. In this scenario, the objective of the research is to identify and understand whether the educational communication occurs and develops a complex program of public policy, such as the More Education Program conducted by the Ministry of Education (MEC) as part of public policies aimed at improving basic education in the country and how it achieves this. The program, at the time of its deployment, had ten areas of interdisciplinary educational action called \"Macrocampos\", which schools used to develop their activities. Among the macrocampos is the area of \"Communication and Use of Media\", which uses the concept of educommunication as theoretical and methodological support. Therefore, based on the documents of the MEC, the research involved broad mapping practices, occurring between 2008 and 2011. Additionally, interviews were conducted with public managers in the ten Brazilian cities accounting for the largest number of communication activities in 2011, and finally a questionnaire was distributed using a sample of 67 schools that develop these activities. The survey found that the program is a promising area for the dissemination of educational communication providing formal education at your fingertips. The study showed, once again, that it is a more appropriate program for communication to be assumed as part of the educational process and not just as a tool at the disposal of different disciplines. However, the complexity of implementation of public policy in a country like Brazil, with its regional specificities as well as the philosophical and pedagogical orientations of multiple actors involved can harm the development of the final results of an educommunication proposal in the school environment.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Luis Carlos Pereira.pdf: 2409581 bytes, checksum: 97f57331fbb6c1efd40260fb5c714cea (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-09-29 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The work is part of researches that aims the use of Mathematical Modeling as a strategy of teaching. A proposal of Mathematical Modeling is herein presented; it was developed along with the first-year high school students from EJA (Teens and Adults Education Program) in which the modeling was used as a teaching strategy. This proposal aims to investigate the Mathematical Modeling prospective, trying to identify which are the positive aspects for teaching Mathematics to this audience. This qualitative study shows a modeling activity for teaching Quadratic Function threads; it was developed by means of participant observation, being that the data were collected from contextualized activities using templates. As a reference, theoretical conceptions of modeling from Dionísio Burak & Maria Eli Puga Beltrão, as well as learning theory from David Paul Ausubel were used. The modeling activity was developed using as basis, the functions notions and flat figures areas, aiming a significant learning. As a result, it was observed that using Mathematical Modeling in EJA program is promising, however it needs to overcome barriers such as didactic contract and class management, for it is not an easy task, once it requires a differentiated approach, both from teacher and students around the growing production. In this context, we highlighted that the participation and interest from students are essentials before this methodology, and that the Modeling allows students to establish a relation between the learned content and real situations, thus favoring their protagonisms during the knowledge acquisition process / O trabalho faz parte de estudos que visam a utilização da Modelagem Matemática como estratégia de ensino.

Almeida, Bruna Góis Soares de January 2016 (has links)
This research aimed to analyze the impact of two different intervention physical education programs in health-related physical fitness of students of a municipal school Campo Bom-RS. It is an evaluative research with a quantitative approach, conducted with 44 adolescents from two classes of 7th year of a municipal school in Campo Bom–RS. The classes were divided into Group I and Group II by lot, and Group I class that was submitted to the physical education program I (emphasis functional exercises) and Group II class that was submitted to the Physical Education Program II (emphasis on sports) for a school quarter. The health-related physical fitness was assessed by a battery of tests proposed by the Projeto Esporte Brasil, as follows: sit and reach test - to assess the flexibility; 1-minute abdominal test - to evaluate the abdominal strength/endurance and 6 minute run/walk test - to assess cardiorespiratory fitness. About the treatment of data was performed one descriptive matrix analysis by Effect Dimension measures with dichotomous nominal scales, as follow risk zone and healthy zone of health-related physical fitness, classification carried out by the Projeto Esporte Brasil. The results indicated that in the stratified analysis by sex, Physical Education Program I caused major effects on abdominal strength/endurance and flexibility in girls, and abdominal strength/endurance in boys, while the Physical Education Program II, the greatest effect was in cardiorespiratory fitness in boys and flexibility and cardiorespiratory fitness in girls. In the analysis by groups found that classes with functional exercises (Physical Education Program I) caused major positive effects on variables abdominal strength/endurance and flexibility while in class with sports (Physical Education Program II) the greatest effects were observed in the variable cardiorespiratory fitness. From these results, we conclude that there were positive effects of Intervention Programs in health-related physical fitness variables, even though they were small. The Physical Education Program I caused greater effects on flexibility and abdominal strength/endurance and the Physical Education Program II caused a greater effect on cardiorespiratory fitness.
