Ortega, Daiani Vieira. January 2019 (has links)
Our purpose was to analyze the implementation process of the São Paulo state curriculum reform, carried out during the José Serra management (2007-2010), and its consequences in the teacher work, from the perception of teachers of a school from the interior of the state. In view of our primary objective and using a qualitative approach, we made a case study involving bibliographical research on the subject matter, semi-structured interview with teachers who worked in the state network in the year of implementation of the reform and analysis of documents. The reform was formulated by education experts and implemented vertically (from top to bottom), without the voices echoing off the school floor being heard. A new conception of teaching emerged with it, centered in the development of competences and abilities and having in the constructivism its psychological contribution. The research results indicate that teachers' lack of participation in the formulation of the reform and the differences of the conception of education present in the materials resulting from it are responsible for the rejection by teachers and the adoption of resistance strategies. In the researched reality, even in the face of the set of actions that aimed to ensure the consolidation of ... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Mestre

(In)disciplina na Educação Infantil e a organização do trabalho na escola : concepções e práticas /

Figueira, Evanileide Patrícia Lima. January 2019 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: This study, linked to Research Line 2 - "Formative Processes, Teaching and Learning" results from investigative work based on the postulate that teachers' and managers' conceptions of childhood, children, and child behavior have a determinant role in the organization of pedagogical work at schools and on how matters related to (in)discipline are dealt with. The desire to understand the problem of indiscipline and its causes to ensure better learning and development conditions for the children in Early Childhood Education has determined how each step of this work was prioritized. The research problem that guided this investigation was finding a way to understand how existing relationships between the conceptions that guide the work of educators, (in)discipline, and the way the school is organized interfere and determine procedures adopted by/at the school in its role as an educational institution. It is important to note that this research has not aimed to prioritize the analysis of classroom (micro level) or public policies (macro level) but focused on the school (meso level) and its organization. From this perspective, it aimed to identify and analyze how an Early Childhood Education school is organized to handle disciplinary matters and how the educators' conceptions interfere in this organization. The methodology for its investigation consisted of conducting field research in order to observe facts and phenomena as they happened in the reality of the school to collect data...

Ferreira, Ricardo Leonel. January 2019 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: Based on the philosophy of Michel Foucault, we can claim that the traditionally employed pedagogy in educational institutions places education under the aegis of a disciplinary and biopolitical normalizing logic, being conducted according to the parameters of a power device which aims for disciplining the bodies and reproducing captive subjectivities in their singularities in a homogenizing way. From a philosophical point of view as a diagnosis of the present time, Foucault points to the relevance of the ethics of the care of the self as a questioning means of the historical practices of the constitution of subjectivity. This is the case, therefore, of the notion of "psychagogy", which can be used to refer to modes of subjectification contrary to the disciplinary logic or biopolitics, making possible a relation with knowledge, which is not privileged by acquisition or assimilation but capable of giving rise to changes in êthos, that is, in the ethical and political constitution of individuals. In this sense, we propose here the challenge of exercising the development of problematizations that are consistent with the political and ethical dimension of pedagogy in human formation and, with the notion of psychagogy we tried to make some epistemological notes about the possibilities of updating educational practices, being mindful of the ethical and political necessity of apprehending the formative processes involved in the relationship between the subject, the truth and the subj...

Grund, Zelina Cardoso. January 2019 (has links)
This research aims to analyze the changes in teacher working conditions after the implementation of the Exclusive and Full-time Dedication Service (RDPI) in the context of the Integral Education Program (PEI) in the state education system of São Paulo. Among other education policies formulated by the São Paulo state government, the Integral Education Program began in 2012. This program promoted changes in students' school day and teacher's working hours. Since then, the state education system has four types of teacher's working hours: reduced, initial, basic and full-time. Given this scenario, our main research question emerged: what changes have occurred in teacher working conditions after the implementation of the Integral Education Program in the state education system of São Paulo? To answer this question the bibliographic, documentary and survey research were used. The survey was conducted through two online questionnaires: one was addressed to the school principals and vice school principals of three hundred and sixty-four state schools that currently integrate the PEI and have full-time teachers; while the other was sent to teachers and coordinators of one of these schools. The analysis of the re... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Mestre

Youth-led Environmental Awareness: Initiatives Towards a Jain Faith Community Empowerment

Otterbine, Joseph R. 08 1900 (has links)
This project employs participatory action research methods in efforts to create a community specific environmental curriculum for the high school age youth at the only Jain faith community in the North Texas region. Aligned with the community’s goals, the youth led in deciding, creating, and carrying out initiatives that were aimed at increasing the level of awareness about environmental issues amongst community members. The research done by the youth aimed at looking at environmental issues through the lens of Jain doctrine. The final creation of a curriculum as a living document to be used by the youth in efforts to promote critical thinking skills and class discussion continues the participatory model. The curriculum encourages experiential and interpretative learning, which grants ownership of the topics to the youth themselves and ultimately empowering them to learn more and spread the importance of being environmentally friendly.

Research and development of a music-movement syllabus for gymnasts and gymnastic coaches

Upjohn, Pauline McMillan 01 January 1980 (has links)
Personal participation in floor exercise choreography and performance, observation of performances by other gymnasts, and conversations 'With other; coaches, and gymnasts· have intensified the author's awareness of a widespread lack of knowledge and understanding about the interpretation and use of music in floor exercise. When choreographing optional floor exercise routines, coaches and gymnasts have difficulty selecting appropriate music, interpreting the music, and choreographing routines to complement the music. Even after routines are finally developed, many of them lack style, originality, amplitude, flow, precision of rhythm and execution, and expressiveness. Many of these qualities are also lacking in the performance of compulsory routines, partially because gymnasts are not able to accurately and aesthetically interpret the music. Concern for this problem stimulated the author to investigate available literature on floor exercise. The literature indicated the importance of the proper use of music as well as skill in tumbling, dance, and acrobatic movements; however, it did not emphasize that gymnasts be trained in the fundamentals of music, which may enable them to accurately and aesthetically interpret music for their routines. After further investigation of the literature in the areas of floor exercise, physical education, dance education, music education, and rhythm education, it was concluded that the development of a music-movement Syllabus with supportive audio-visual aids, for training gymnasts and gymnastic coaches, could be of value in improving floor exercise training programs.

Effectiveness of Remedial Mathematics Supplemental Instruction: a Community College Study.

Sagna, Bakary January 2019 (has links)
The purpose of this mixed method study was to determine if there is a relationship between characteristics of supplemental instructors’ personal traits, teaching skills, subject matter, constructive/active, collaborative learning, effective communication, and their practices (as judged by students) and student success in their remedial mathematics course. The college Provost was contacted by email to request an authorization to conduct this study in his college. Once approved, the investigator contacted face to face his colleagues to ask their students to participate in the study because they enrolled in a remedial algebra class where the instructor is assisted by a supplemental instructor (SI leader). Sixteen algebra classes were selected, and each were assisted by supplemental instructors. Students’ scores on the pre-test (at beginning of the semester) and post-test (at the end of the semester) were collected to gauge their achievement on both tests. Students completed a questionnaire that asked about their perceptions about their supplemental instructors’ personal traits, teaching skills, subject matter, constructive/active, collaborative learning, effective communication, and their practices throughout the semester. Students’ mean scores difference on the post-test were higher in 62.5% of the sections than on the pre-test. The evaluation of achievement on both tests, the responses to the questionnaire and comments from students showed that SI leader’s characteristics associated to effective communication/active learning, teaching skills, and personal traits could be contributor to score achievements. The linear regression in the study shows that the three factors did not significantly predict the post-test score. However, the pre-test did significantly predict the post-test score in a remedial Math 20 at the end of the semester (Beta = .47, t (197) = 6.56, p <.05). In addition, the comments in the questionnaire found that students acknowledged their supplemental instructor role in the classroom and during the SI’s weekly sessions.

The Effect of Motivational and Personality Traits on Decision Behavior in the Sampling Paradigm

Al Alamy, Lujain Fawaz January 2020 (has links)
Previous research in regulatory focus theory and regulatory fit (Higgins, 1997, 2000) has identified two primary orientations and preferred means that people employ in-pursuit of a desired outcome. Promotion focus use eagerness means to approach gains, while prevention focus use vigilance means to avoid losses. These established theories have contributed to our understanding of individual-level differences in various description-based decision tasks, where people learn about choice outcomes through explicit descriptions (Hertwig, Barron, Weber, & Erev, 2004). The primary purpose of this dissertation was to examine the effect of ‘trait-level’ regulatory focus and regulatory fit on decision behavior in a decisions-from-experience task, where choice outcomes are unknown and can only be learned through experience. Specifically, the present studies examine decision behavior in the sampling paradigm (Hertwig et al., 2004; Weber, Shafir, & Blais, 2004), where participants may sample outcomes from the presented decision options before making a consequential decision. In the reported studies, individual differences in regulatory focus orientation were predicted to influence decision behavior (i.e., sampled outcomes and risky choices) above and beyond other relevant dispositional variables, specifically, financial risk tolerance and broad (Big-5) personality traits. Decision behavior was expected to vary by motivational orientation and by its interaction with choice domain (i.e., gain vs. loss problems). A secondary purpose was to examine the effect of financial risk tolerance on risky choices, as well as to explore the relationships between broad personality traits and decision behavior. Three studies (pilot and two main) were conducted. In each study, participants were given a set of four questionnaires and participated in an interactive computer-based (sampling paradigm) game. Because of data quality concerns with the pilot study and Study 1, the interpretations rely on the results from Study 2. Study 2 found trait-level regulatory fit to significantly predict participants’ exploratory (i.e., sampling) behavior. Moreover, Study 2 provided evidence that the frequency of risky choices varied by risk tolerance level. The theoretical implications for regulatory focus orientation and experience-based decision behavior are discussed, and potential avenues for future research are proposed.

Contributions Toward a Theory of Listening in Literature and Literary Pedagogy

Fraver, Brad January 2021 (has links)
What does it mean to listen—and how can works of literature teach us about listening? Of the four modes of language—reading, writing, speaking, and listening—that together constitute the “language arts” as a curriculum area in secondary English education, listening is relatively undertheorized—and conspicuously so, given the prominence of student engagement and culturally-responsive pedagogy in scholarly and popular education writing. Western thought generally prioritizes the act of speaking or the concept of “voice” in conceiving of subjects and agency, and an emphasis on “finding your voice” and “having your say” implies questions about the modes of reception by which any particular voice actually might be heard. In the classroom, listening during discussion of literature, for instance, can be an enriching and even revelatory experience for students and their teacher. This dissertation, which is variously theoretical, historical, and narrative, often captures the drama of classrooms and sometimes contemplates the communities that sponsor them. Grounded in some concerns of the teacher as listener as well as a sense of wonder and surprise in the literature classroom (Chapters 1 and 6), this dissertation is a series of contiguous explorations of ideas about listening in educational theory and pragmatist aesthetics (Chapter 2); psychoanalysis and rhetorical studies (Chapter 3); literary history and criticism (Chapter 4); historical poetics (Chapter 5), as well as particular works of literature (Chapters 4 and 8). While discourses about literature or literary experience since at least the Renaissance arguably privilege visual metaphors for the literary imagination—as a way of “seeing” the lives of others across distances of place and time, as well as “reflections of” oneself in these others’—a parallel and even more ancient tradition among poet-critics invokes the sonorous, elaborating auditory metaphors for understanding the experience of reading itself as a kind of listening. Listening not only refers to modes of sociality, or relating to and with others in ways that manifest communicative exchange, shared experience, or mutual recognition but, importantly, also refers to an inner experience that to some extent remains private. Listening therefore instantiates a certain double consciousness. Like the imaginative participation of reading, listening is a temporal experience of engaging with the other as such—that is, an encounter with difference that might become an occasion for transformative learning.
