Effectuation or causation? : A study on expert start-up advice

Van Baelen, Thibaud, Díaz Martínez, Andrés January 2021 (has links)
The recent increase in effectuation research shows the popularity and potential of this body of knowledge. This new paradigm is trying to challenge the established traditional causal knowledge, taught in many MBA and higher education courses. As attractive as effectuation- might be, it is necessary to acknowledge the importance of the traditional knowledge, such as causation. In this study we focus on understanding how expert entrepreneurs -those individuals who deal and use these effectuation and causation dimensions in their daily routines- give advice to new upcoming entrepreneurs, in addition to investigating if and how they combine both dimensions in their decision-making advice to achieve more well-rounded and supported recommendations. This was done in this empirical study through the exploratory analysis of internet sourced interviews with expert entrepreneurs about how to become an entrepreneur or how to start a business. We find that expert entrepreneurs tend to give advice to new entrepreneurs in an effectual manner. Furthermore, our study contributes to extent knowledge by offering a new approach to effectual studies based on previously validated methods with the introduction of a new database and perspective. In addition, we explore the distribution within the entrepreneurial population when it comes to advice-giving.

Parent Involvement as an Instructional Strategy: Academic Parent-Teacher Teams

January 2011 (has links)
abstract: Families and schools share the monumental responsibility of educating children. Children and parent-teacher conferences remain the primary means by which parents and teachers share academic information. Given the limited effectiveness of these conferences, a more compelling alternative for home-school collaboration on academic matters is warranted. The purpose of this action research study was to examine an alternative approach to parent-teacher conferences, Academic Parent Teacher Teams (APTT). APTT is a classroom-based parent involvement model composed of three 75-minute parent-teacher team meetings and an individual 30-minute parent-teacher session. Team meetings are highly structured and include six components: personally inviting parents by the teacher; sharing whole-class and individual student data; setting 60-day academic goals; coaching parents in `teaching' skills; distributing take-home practice materials; and networking. Quantitative data included pre- and post-intervention parent surveys, and pre- and post-intervention student scores on high frequency words and oral reading fluency. Qualitative data included field notes from APTT meetings, pre- and post-intervention teacher reflections, and teacher, parent, and student interviews. Findings from this study supported previous research that suggested most parents have high aspirations for their children's academic success. Findings also indicated parents understood their involvement was important to support academic growth. Increased quality and quantity of parent-teacher communication and interaction improved parents' ability to support student learning at home. Parents increased involvement in children's academics was related to teachers' provision of detailed information and training of parents. Qualitative results showed parents' teaching efforts contributed to students' improvement in reading. To understand this outcome, effectual congruence (EC) was offered as an explanation. EC occurred when parents and teachers agreed on an action plan for student achievement, when there was a mutual commitment to taking specific actions and when each person's role was clearly defined and implemented. EC became the process that supported achievement growth. These results demonstrated that relationships between parents and teachers are complex. Further, when teachers and parents were fully invested in collaboration it produced powerful results for students. This study provided critical information for parents, teachers, administrators and policy makers attempting to implement more effective parent involvement initiatives. / Dissertation/Thesis / Ed.D. O comportamento do empreendedor e suas influências no processo de criação e no desempenho da empresa / Entrepreneurial behavior and its influences on the business creation process and on business performance

Boas, Eduardo Pinto Vilas 16 April 2015 (has links)
The purpose of the thesis is to verify whether the profile of the entrepreneur and his behavior during the entrepreneurial process (the creation of a company) influence the performance of the company created. In order to enable the scope of such purpose, there were initially verified the type of profile and the correspondent type of behavior predominant in the sample analyzed. The main method used on the research is descriptive, being the research predominantly quantitative. The entrepreneurial profile was measured by the instrument proposed by McClelland (1987) and the behavior of the entrepreneur was measured by an instrument created and proposed by the author of this thesis, aiming to understand the behavior shown during the creation of the company, between two extremes, the causal and the effectual. In order to identify the group of characteristics predominant in the profile and the predominant behavior in each activity of the entrepreneurial process, there were used descriptive statistics. Following that, the analysis of clusters was made to identify the existence of different types of entrepreneurial behavior. However, in order to achieve the main purpose, the technique used was the structural equation modeling, more specifically the partial least square (PLS-SEM) method. The data were collected through a self-administrated questionnaire sent electronically to more than 100.000 people registered on one of the Brazilian main websites of support to entrepreneurs, 467 of which have returned and 457 were used after analysis of uni and multivariate outliers. The results revealed that the entrepreneurial profile presented more of the planning group characteristics, followed by the achievement group and, after that, by the power one. They also revealed that the general behavior of the entrepreneurs is more causal than effectual: sixteen activities are carried out with causal emphasis and only ten with effectual emphasis. These finding differs from the recent theory of the entrepreneurial behavior that proposes the prevalence of the effectual behavior. Still regarding the behavior of the entrepreneur, it was verified the existence of three different types of behavior, one that is more causal (acts on a cautious way, with previous planning of actions), one intermediate behavior (varies the behavior between acting with previous planning and without previous planning) and one more effectual behavior (acts without planning and, afterward, faces possible consequences). One finding of the study, regarding the types of behavior, was to note that entrepreneurs change their pattern of behavior along the process: entrepreneurs that begin the process on a more causal way tend to be less causal as they advance and the entrepreneurs that begin effectual tend to be less effectual along the process. Finally, answering to the main purpose of the thesis, relating profile, behavior and performance, it is possible to affirm that both profile and behavior influence the performance of the company created. It was demonstrated that behavior may exercise greater influence than the profile, especially the behavior with causal emphasis. It was also verified that the model presented suits better to entrepreneurs of the traditional commerce sector than to those from services\' sector.

Entreprenörskap i software startups : Kausalt eller effektuellt tänkande / Entrepreneurship in software start-ups : Causal or effectual thinking

Lindh, Jonathan January 2018 (has links)
Over the last decades digitization has become more and more relevant in our society and the IT market is desperately screaming for new competence. Mainstream media often highlight the successful IT companies in their articles and with that, breeding envy and hope. While the IT market is screaming for new competence and mainstream media is writing about IT companies entrepreneurs, new and old, turn their heads toward the idea of making their IT companies, often unaware that the road to greatness is very long and hard to complete and that the chances of their company surviving is very minimal. This study was conducted using a “structured case study” methodology to investigate a software startup company that is currently being liquidated. The company’s way of working and business development has been analysed compared to two different logical ways of working. One of the ways of working is based on a more traditional logic of entrepreneurship, and the other is based on a relatively new logic that, according to recent research, has been identified as the preferred way of working with successful entrepreneurs. This study has resulted in a detailed description of the researched company’s, almost, full lifecycle. The detailed description, analysed along with relevant previous research, has resulted in the identification of the researched company’s ways of working and their approach to developing the company. Potential reasons as to why the company is currently under liquidation has been presented and some advice that future entrepreneurs can take part of are also presented.

Indikatiewe en die imperatiewe aspekte van die heiliging / The indicative and the imperative aspects of sanctification

Van Wyk, Abraham Johannes 11 1900 (has links)
So groei hulle in laasgenoemde aspek. / The indicative (initial) aspect of sanctification is graciously given to the believers by God when they are justified and regenerated, so that the imperative (ongoing) aspect can flow therefrom. In the first-mentioned aspect God confers upon the believers the new status of saints, and focuses them on Himself by uniting them with Christ in co-crucifixion for sin, and in co-resurrection with Him in his new life. In continuation thereof, the believers live out the implications of their received status in the Militia Christiana by putting away sin, and by putting on Christ in an ever-increasing measure, and in living for God in Christ's power by the Spirit, thus growing in the latter aspect. The Reformed teaching, according to which it is believed that a second work of grace or a subsequent baptism with the Spirit is unnecessary for effectual growth, is most in accordance with the continuation between the two aspects. / Philosophy, Practical & Systematic Theology / M.
