Management of electronic information resources (EIRs) to enhance their long-term links preservation and access in the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) Pietermaritzburg (PMB) and Howard College campus libraries.

Kavishe, George Firmin. 22 May 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine the management of electronic information resources (EIRs) to enhance their long-term links preservation and access in the University of KwaZulu-Natal Pietermaritzburg (PMB) and Howard College campus libraries. The study investigated the strategies and policies used in managing EIRs, how the librarians overcome technological obsolescence, the information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructures used in the management of the EIRs and the competency of the librarians in electronic preservation. The significance of this study lay in its addressing of the issue of long-term links preservation of and access to EIRs that has not been addressed by previous studies. There is rapid growth in the creation and dissemination of EIRs which has emphasized the digital environment’s speed and ease of dissemination with little regard for its long-term preservation and access. The study population was 33 and it comprised the subject librarians, metadata librarians and electronic resources librarian of PMB and Howard College campus libraries of the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Adopting a quantitative approach the research design was that of a survey and the research instrument was a self-administered questionnaire comprising both open and closed questions. A total of 28 librarians responded to the questionnaire giving a response rate of 84.8%. Data was analyzed using SPSS. Results were presented in the form of figures and tables. The study was underpinned by the Open Archival Information System (OAIS) Reference Model, which is being used widelyin the digital preservation community. The analysis of the findings revealed that there was an intermediate level of ICT knowledge and skill with regard to management of EIRs amongst the respondents and a need for training in EIRs management particularly with regards to metadata, migration, emulation, maintenances and bit preservation techniques. It was also revealed that the libraries were using the server’s hard drive to store the EIRs. The results also showed that there were an arguably high number of respondents ten (35.7%) who indicated that their libraries did not have anEIRs management policy. For those respondents who said that their libraries do have a policy, the vast majority indicated that the policy did provide guidelines for acquiring materials in electronic form and for transforming materials from print to electronic form. Recommendations emerging from the conclusion were made and suggestions for further research put forward. / Thesis (M.I.S.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2013.

The print artifact in the age of the digital : the writings of Mark Z. Danielewski and Steve Tomasula

Aardse, Kent Alexander, University of Lethbridge. Faculty of Arts and Science January 2011 (has links)
The primacy of the print novel as the main mode for knowledge dissemination and communication is being challenged today by the vast influx and pervasiveness of digital media. Print literature, then, is at potential risk for obsolescence, as digital technology creates new modes of narrative distribution. The novel, therefore, is in the midst of a metamorphosis, having to adapt in order to properly situate itself within the new media ecology. Somewhat paradoxically, the same digital technology that challenges print literature’s primacy is responsible for the novel’s adaption. The changing face of the page creates new novels that reflect the digital in print, through changes in typography, layout, and design. These changes illuminate the need for a material-specific methodology in literary theory, and brings about the death of postmodernism in the new, digital environment. iv / vi, 91 leaves ; 29 cm

How on-line publishing contributes to democracy, press freedom and the public sphere: a case study of Nyasatimes online and The Daily Times newspaper in Malawi

Kakhobwe, Penelope January 2009 (has links)
Since the demise of the Berlin Wall and communism, many African countries have adopted a Western-model democracy as a system of governance. However, the media has not been liberalised to reflect this new discourse as constraints in many African countries pertaining to press freedom still exist. The internet appears to have the potential to challenge the political power of governments (Tsagarousianou, 1998:167). It has been posited that it has the potential to offer more platforms for information especially in the case of restrictive media environments. This study set out to investigate the impact of on-line publishing in Malawi. It explored how the emergence of this new form of publishing through the internet has affected the public sphere, democracy and press freedom in Malawi. The main focus was the level of press freedom at on-line newspapers as compared to traditional newspapers. It used the public sphere theory and literature on the internet as a technology of freedom as its theoretical framework. Using a case study approach by focusing on two newspapers; Nyasatimes on-line and Daily Times, the study used the coup plot coverage in May 2008 in Malawi by both newspapers as reference for the measurement of the level of press freedom. The study used qualitative content analysis and semi-structured interviews as its research methods. The research revealed that Nyasatimes enjoys more freedom to publish and therefore appears to have more press freedom than its more traditional counterpart. However, Nyasatimes also faces some unique challenges. The findings also revealed that press freedom in Malawi is not only affected by government through legislation but other factors and players as well play a central role in determining the level of press freedom for traditional media. The study therefore concludes that despite the internet’s ability to transcend local regimes of authority and censorship pertaining to press freedom, the challenges facing traditional media still need to be addressed as it is the primary source of information for most people in Malawi with on-line newspapers being simply supplementary.

En STARK specialtidskrift : Arbetet med att ta fram en grafisk mall till en specialtidskrift från STARK Magasin, samt en diskussion om hur båda tidskrifterna kan göras om till e-format / A new magazine with a specific orientation from STARK Magasin : The development of a graphic template for a magazine with a specific orientation from STARK Magasin, and a discussion about how the magazine could be remade to an electronic format

Johnson, Sandra January 2013 (has links)
The goal with this project was to develop a graphic template for a new magazine about running, STARK Löpning. Besides the looks of the graphic elements, sections in the magazine would be developed. Finally, a discussion is made about how the magazine can be remade into an electronic format. Content analyses has been made regarding magazines with both a main and a specific orientation, to review the graphic relationship between them. A content  analysis regarding a competing magazine about running was also made. An unstructured interview was done with Art Director Petrus Iggström, to find out his way of working when he creates new graphic templates for magazines. The discussion concerning the electronic format was done based on previous research in the subject. The graphic relationship between main and specific magazines turned out to not be significant, they had few similarities. It was often showed that elements regarding the magazine s’identity had been changed, for example text fonts. This could be because the specific magazines are sighted towards a different target audience than the main magazine, and therefor wants an identity of its own. It’s an easy process to remake the magazines STARK Magasin and STARK Löpning into an electronic format, but none of the services that were looked closely upon in this essay were fitting for both passive and active readers. Nor did the services have a good enough browsing feature. For example, if the reader wants to read an article that was advertised on the cover page, it was not possible to go directly to the article from the cover.

Conception de formes de relecture dans les chaînes éditoriales numériques / Designing proofreading news in digital publishing chains

Dumas Milne Edwards, Léonard 25 January 2016 (has links)
Documentary production in a professional context often involves a revising process in which documents need to be proofread before validation and publication. This important task faces new challenges when dealing with digital documents. Indeed, three features of digital writing are problematic: documents evolve very frequently and cannot be proofread each time as a whole; interactions provided by hypertexts make the task laborious or even impossible; document repurposing increases the views of content to proofread. As an advanced digital writing technology, XML publishing chains are a relevant framework for studying proofreading of digital documents. Observing that the views of content proposed by publishing chains, namely the generative views (XML sources that can be modified through a WYSIWYM editor) and the published views (documents obtained by transformation of the XML sources), are not adapted for proofreading, we consider designing new views of content dedicated for this activity based on two approaches: linearization, which consists in restoring some material linearity among contents; and tabulation, which aims at parallelizing different repurposing contexts so that they can be better compared. Part of the contribution presented here has led to the development of prototypes that have been experimented in the use of Scenari publishing chains in a pedagogical context. These prototypes rely on linear proofreading views allowing in particular the comparison between two versions of the document based on a diff algorithm.

Corporate publishing in South African banks : focus on formal, external publications

Mostert, Aleta 06 December 2004 (has links)
“What constitutes corporate publishing?” is the question that motivated the research for this study. It is not easily defined, but can be contextualised as part of the communications and marketing strategy of an organisation. In essence it entails the conceptualisation, planning and realisation of professional publications in an organisation. By conducting interviews with publishing personnel in selected South African banks, best practices pertaining to corporate publishing structures and processes were derived. It was found that traditional book publishing activities, such as commissioning; planning and creating content; reviewing, copy-editing and proofreading; design and layout; production, marketing; printing; and distribution can be used as basis for a corporate publishing venture. The convergence of media, however, is challenging publishers to rethink traditional methods of publishing. Electronic publishing is opening new vistas for organisations as it is an efficient tool for them to build and strengthen their corporate identity and to reach wider markets. To acommodate electronic dissemination, the adoption of an integrated, parallel publishing workflow is proposed in the study. Utilising a single source document for creating multiple formats enhances the publishing process and ensures the longevity of information. In order to draw all the publishing activities in an organisation together in a consistent and cohesive way, a centralised publishing strategy seems to be the most effective solution. The golden thread running through this study is the important role of corporate publishers as service providers in information-rich organisations. / Dissertation (MA (Publishing))--University of Pretoria, 2005. / Information Science / unrestricted
