Viscoplastic modelling of embankments on soft soils

Manivannan, Ganeshalingam, Aerospace, Civil & Mechanical Engineering, Australian Defence Force Academy, UNSW January 2005 (has links)
A major instrumented geosynthetic reinforced approach embankment was constructed to 5.5 m elevation above ground, with prefabricated vertical drains, over a soft compressible clay deposit at Leneghan, Newcastle, Australia in May 1995. The field monitoring of settlements for over six years shows that the embankment manifests significant creep. The instrumentation, field performance and the finite element analyses for predicting the long-term performance of this embankment are described in this thesis. The maximum settlement of 1.1 m was observed one year after the completion of construction. However, the embankment continued to settle at a rate of 0.4 mm/day for the next 5 years. The horizontal displacements of 0.09-0.14 m at various locations and the maximum reinforcement strains of 0.67% were recorded. A numerical model was developed to perform a fully coupled large deformation elasto-viscoplastic finite element analysis for this performance prediction based on creep model proposed by Kutter and Sathialingam (1992). The foundation soil was modelled with creep material behaviour using six noded linear strain triangular elements. A well-documented case history ??? Sackville embankment, New Brunswick, Canada was analysed using this model as a benchmark problem and the model was found to predict all the behaviour characteristics reasonably well. The results obtained from finite element analysis using this model are shown to be in reasonable agreement with the observed performance of Leneghans embankment in terms of settlements, horizontal displacements, excess pore pressures and geosynthetic strains. But, the prediction of settlements was less than satisfactory beyond April 1999. Finite element analyses were performed to study the sensitivity of this embankment behaviour on the variation of hydraulic conductivity values and geosynthetic reinforcement properties. This sensitivity study indicated that the kv variation, the kh/kv ratio and the nominal values of geosynthetic properties adopted in the benchmark analysis are reasonable enough for the long-term behaviour prediction.

Pyrite weathering and lithium (Li?) transport under unsaturated flow conditions in model and mine-tailing systems

Alarcon Leon, Edgardo January 2005 (has links)
[Truncated abstract] As mineral deposits continue to be mined, the non economic gangue materials such as sulphides (e.g. pyrite) that are extracted as part of the ore body or overburden are deposited within the waste rock and/or milled tailings. As a result of natural weathering processes, these reactive materials represent a potential hazard to surrounding environments. A major consequence, resulting from mine-waste impoundments containing sulphidic materials, relates to the offsite movement of low pH leachates containing elevated concentrations of metal ions posing a contamination threat. The processes and mechanisms acting in the formation of acid mine drainage (AMD) are highly variable and, to a high extent, controlled by climatic conditions as the main driver of water flow and wetness of the system which in turn determines the availability of oxygen as well as water for pyrite weathering. In particular, this thesis is based on the hypothesis that in semiarid and arid climates the acid production may be water … The experiments were repeated at different water contents ranging from 0.24 to 0.33 cm3 cm-3. Breakthrough curves (BTC) of Li+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+ and pH were measured and described with models of different complexities. This included the use of a simple linear and non-linear isotherms for Li+ alone, a binary Li+ - K+ ion exchange, and a complete multicomponent chemical equilibrium description of ion transport. The latter, by including dissolution of primary minerals which released base cations such as Mg2+, Ca2+ and K+ explained some of the elution patterns of base cations for which the Li+ - K+ exchange was the dominant process. Furthermore, under unsaturated water flow conditions, retardation of Li+ increased with decreasing water content. Thus solute mobility in mafic rock tailings appears to decrease under strongly unsaturated water flow conditions.

Slope stability analyses are predominantly performed using the two-dimensional (2D) conventional limit equilibrium methods. Conventional limit equilibrium methods are targets of many criticisms for using static equilibrium, assumptions of forces in the analysis and the same factor of safety along the slip surface. In order to overcome these shortcomings, the method proposed by Kulhawy (1969) incorporates the stress-strain behavior of the soil with stresses from the Finite Element Method (FEM) with the same structure as limit equilibrium methods. It is also called enhanced method. Due to the existence of slopes with complex geometries, the three-dimensional (3D) approach is only able to incorporate all the geometric aspects of the problem. This thesis is divided into two papers with the subject of slope stability analyses by the Kulhawy’s method in 2D and 3D approaches. The primary objective of this thesis is to evaluate major factors that influence slope stability. The first paper proposed geometries ranging from convex to concave in a set of soil properties. Two stress paths were considered, i.e., construction and excavation. The GLE method was computed for comparison purposes. The slip surface is very dependent on the stress history and the shape of slope face. The relative difference in typical initial stress state reached 15% in 2D analyses and 34% in 3D analyses. Sensitivity analysis of effect of Poisson’s ratio on factor of safety was very relevant. The relationship between 2D and 3D factors of safety are nearly linear independent of stress state on order of 30 to 40%. The second paper propose analyses on embankment dams built in narrow valleys. Three approaches of slope stability were used: shear strength reduction (SSR), Kulhawy’s and GLE methods. The typical conditions of foundation sites are very variable as topography and deformability. Sensitivity analysis of Young’s modulus of foundation on factor of safety was insignificant in 2D and relevant in 3D analyses. The ratio between embankment length (W) and height (H) was very important on slope stability. The plane strain analysis tends to high W/H ratio and the opposite shows high 3D effects. The inclination of abutment showed to be relevant on factor of safety only in embankments in narrow valleys. Stiffer foundations are beneficial to the factor of safety due producing high arching effects in this scenario. The Kulhawy’s method proved to be advantageous by the incorporation of mechanical behavior of soil, more realistic stress and local stability evaluation on slip surface. It increases the amount of useful and reliable information to the engineering professional in design of slopes. All analyses were performed using SoilVision Systems suite software, Saskatchewan, Canada. The modules used were SVSLOPE, SVSOLID and SVFLUX (SoilVision Systems Ltd., 2018). The stress analysis for the simulation of excavation and construction trajectories used partial differential equation (PDE) solver, FlexPDE 6 (PDE Solutions Inc., 2014).

La responsabilité administrative des personnes publiques découlant des ouvrages de protection contre les inondations et submersions marines / The administrative responsibility of public figures arising from flood protection and marine submersions

Hequet, Nicolas 20 January 2017 (has links)
In accordance with article 33 of the 16 september 1807 act relating to the draining of marshes, owners of dams are legally responsible for maintaining and monitoring the dams’ security. Various laws have clarified and strengthened the management and maintenance duty of dams over time to provide a sense of security. Despite the fact that the dams are built to protect people’s security, they have been considered as “hazardous structures” due to the potential risk of collapse. In addition, the legal concept of ‘dams disaster’ has emerged and been established, recognizing the limits of water proofing works as well as improvement and maintenance works and legally recognizing even unexpected disasters. Flooding and submersions occurred during last two decades demonstrated a significant lack of adequate maintenance for dams throughout the mainland France. The cause of lack of maintenance can be attributed to a complicated structure of ownership, which include many stakeholders and also to the owners’ unwillingness or lack of funding to make investments required for improvement and maintenance works. But, these stakes often go beyond the protection of their property. Furthermore, the responsibility of dam owners has been allocated to local authorities to offset deficiencies, but it was done so without preparing financial measures necessary for maintenance works and fully assessing the level of funds needed

Etude numérique de l'interaction sol-atmosphère : application aux remblais en sols traités / Numerical investigation of soil-atmosphere interaction : application to embankments of treated soils

An, Ni 09 January 2017 (has links)
The main objective of this study is to investigate the hydro-thermal behavior of soil subjected to climate change through numerical modelling.A coupled hydro-thermal model is developed for describing the coupled hydro-thermal soil behavior. The soil-atmosphere interaction is studied through the mass and energy balances. Afterwards, a numerical approach to estimate soil hydro-thermal behavior by integrating the coupled hydro-thermal model with a soil-atmosphere interaction model is proposed. The validation of this approach is performed through the comparison between the numerical results using FreeFem++ code and the experimental data available from column drying tests reported in literature. This approach is firstly used for the numerical modelling of the environmental chamber tests carried out by Song in 2014. Satisfactory simulation results are obtained in terms of variations of soil temperature and soil volumetric water content. Afterwards, this approach is further applied to two cases of embankments, in Héricourt and in Rouen respectively. For Héricourt embankment, a numerical investigation was conducted for 20 days, and a good agreement between simulation results and filed measurements is obtained, showing that the proposed approach is suitable for analyzing the soil hydro-thermal behavior in the case of two-dimensional embankments. It proves also that the boundary conditions and the soil parameters adopted are appropriate. In the case of Rouen embankment, two different periods, 187 days and 387 days, are considered. The good performance of the proposed approach in estimating the embankment hydro-thermal behavior under the climate effect is also verified. The comparison between calculations and measurements also reveals the importance of appropriately adopting the thermal and hydraulic boundary conditions as well as the soil parameters. Based on the numerical simulations, several suggestions are made in terms of collection of input data for the application of this approach to predict soil temperature and volumetric water content variations in longer term

[en] 3D ELASTOPLASTIC ANALYSIS FOR SHALLOW FOUNDATIONS AND EMBANKMENTS BY THE FINITE ELEMENT METHOD / [pt] ANÁLISE ELASTO-PLÁSTICA 3D DE FUNDAÇÕES SUPERFICIAIS E ATERROS POR ELEMENTOS FINITOS

[en] The vast majority of geotechnical works, such as some foundations, embankments and excavations, show a typical three-dimensional geometric configuration. However, depending on the complexity of obtaining solutions considering the aspects inherent to the three-dimensional deformation and stress, the analysis of these works have been performed by adopting common approaches and plane strain or axisymmetric. This dissertation presents a computational model based on displacement formulation of finite element method for simulation of mechanical problems of static equilibrium condition of geotechnical works in three dimensions. It highlights the problems of load capacity of shallow foundations and the simulation of embankment construction. The soil is considered as material non-linear elastic-plastic models and non-associated Mohr- Coulomb and modified Lade-Kim are adopted to represent their relationship stress-strain-resistance. The nonlinear solution strategies, both overall and in the Gauss point level, are presented and discussed. Examples of load capacity of shallow foundations are compared with the results of the theory of limit equilibrium and limit analysis showing good results. The effect of tension in the intermediate stress path is presented and discussed in the simulation examples of the construction of embankments.

Mann, Daniela Carnasciali de Andrade 18 March 2015 (has links)
Waste management deficiency causes various problems like irregular landfill, water and air pollution, population health, soil and water contamination.
