Velyslanectví ČSSR v Londýně / The Czechoslovak Embassy in LondonMachková, Nina January 2018 (has links)
We study the Embassy building of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic, which received the 1971 Award of the Royal Institute of British Architects for the best newly completed building in London. We examine the building from an architectural point of view and chart its construction; we also place it in the broader context of Czech architecture built in the 60's to represent the State abroad. The main body of work in this context consists of the series of embassies designed by the circle of architects associated with Karel Filsak and Jan Šrámek. Today, these buildings are considered to be some of the finest examples of Czechoslovak architecture of that era. Given the Architecture Award bestowed on the Embassy, we also consider the building within the context of British architecture of the day. We chart the development of New Brutalism, defined as the style pioneered by the group of artists associated with Alice and Peter Smithsons, and we investigate the influence the New Brutalism had on the recipients of the RIBAAwards in the years 1965-1971. We find British as well as foreign influences in these buildings, drawing comparisons with the Embassy building. Distopia : the utopia of dissidence and cultural pluralism in three generations of Dutch artistsKruger, Runette January 2017 (has links)
This study develops a utopia, named distopia, positioned as a utopia of dissidence and cultural pluralism, also described as difference. The term distopia is a neologism formulated to invoke productive elements of utopia (such as a vision for an improved sociocultural sphere), with aspects of dystopia (namely, scepticism regarding the prevalent), whilst evading the potential naiveté of utopia as well as the hopeless resignation that dystopia can encourage. The term also denotes the political expedience of dissent. Utopia is analysed in terms of its form, content, or function, and according to its underlying sociocultural dynamic, which is, in turn, determined by intersecting permutations of space and time. This study furthermore categorises utopias as either representative of the same (that is, of the institutional, political, discursive, ideological and sociocultural status quo), or of the other. The other is defined here as an agent marginalised along the vectors of race, class, gender, and sexuality. Distopia is, accordingly, a dissenting utopia of the other, formulated to address, in particular, sociocultural exclusion and human rights violations linked to the parallel projects of neocolonial exploitation and of destabilising globalisation practices driven by neoliberal ideology. The utopias of three Dutch visual artists, namely Piet Mondrian (1872-1944), Constant Nieuwenhuys (1920-2005), and Jonas Staal (b. 1981) in collaboration with Moussa Ag Assarid (b. c.1975), are critiqued through the lens of distopia. This is done in order to assess the status of productive difference and engagement with the other in their respective utopias, created over the course of a century. / Thesis (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2017. / Visual Arts / PhD / Unrestricted

This paper is the consequence of our previous research on all kinds of people who took part in the constitution of Brazil. The dissertation entitled "People in Brazil: who they are in textbooks of Portuguese as a foreign language" (Furlan, 2008) presents an analysis of four textbooks prepared for non-native speakers and shows both the work of erasure and at the same time the sedimentation of some sayings that culminated in an imaginary of all groups that contributed somehow to the growth and development of the country. From this study the following question came up: what are the sayings about Brazil on texts available on the websites of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries and the embassies of Brazil in Argentina and Ghana which aim, among others, to disclose the country and the Portuguese language? To answer this question we adopted the materialist perspective of discourse analysis and analyzed the texts available on the websites the following websites: a) Community of Portuguese Language Countries (www.cplp.org) b) Embassy of Brazil in Buenos Aires / Argentina (www.www.brasil.org.ar) and c) Embassy of Brazil in Accra / Ghana (www.embrazil.com.gh). Finding out what is said about Brazil in these texts is important once the Community and the embassies are vested with legal powers to introduce Brazil and the Brazilians worldwide. These sayings cause some truth effects about the Brazilian territory and its people and thus contribute to the formation of an imaginary that defines relations between Brazilians and foreigners / Doutorado / Lingua Estrangeira / Doutora em Lingüística Aplicada

LR ambasadų komunikacinės veiklos formuojant šalies įvaizdį Europoje / Communicative activities of LR embassies in the country's image formation in EuropeJugulytė, Kristina 17 February 2011 (has links)
The object of the paper- communication and public relations measures, which are used by diplomats to represent the state, to publicize the events occurring in the embassy and to communicate with foreign target audiences.
The research was done in several stages. At first the role of the Lithuanian diplomatic missions of forming the image of the state was determined, measures public relations and methods of communication with audiences were identified. The ways how the embassies establish communication activities were analyzed using questioning survey and interviews with the diplomats working in different European states. Finally the interviews with experts helped to evaluate the expediency of the diplomatic and communication activities and the state image formation possibilities in the context of public diplomacy.
The research revealed that in different embassies of the Republic of Lithuania the same communication measures were being used and the frequency depends on the events in the embassy, number of diplomats working and budget. Meanwhile the relations wit mass media - which is important channel of information distribution – is not always effective in different states, because the information presented by embassies is often seen as propaganda and it is unclear if the message reaches the target. Therefore in the context of public diplomacy more... [to full text]

U.S. MEDIATED PUBLIC DIPLOMACY IN A CRISIS: ROMANIAN CASE ANALYSIS OF ROMANIAN MEDIA VERSUS U.S. EMBASSY FRAMINGComan, Ioana Alexandra 01 May 2011 (has links)
This thesis studies a case of U.S. mediated public diplomacy in Romania by analyzing the Romanian media framing as compared to the U.S. embassy’s framing of a public diplomacy crisis. It seeks to participate in the discussion about public diplomacy in general and mediated public diplomacy in particular. The case, from 2004, concerns the death of Romanian rock star, Teo Peter, in a car accident caused by an American marine serving in the U.S. embassy. A public diplomacy crisis situation focuses on the U.S. mediated public diplomacy efforts to prevent damaging its image; and also intensifies media’s interest on writing about the subject. The analysis in this study is based on the investigation of the similarities and differences in the frames used in the press releases and news articles to construct the image of the same event. The thesis employs Entman’s concept of U.S. mediated public diplomacy when analyzing the framing process of two of the major actors presented in his model: the target nation media and the U.S. public and media diplomacy (U.S. officials in that country). Benoit’s model is used to better explain the press releases’ framing. Framing analysis was chosen as a qualitative research method, as this study aims to explore the images created by mass media or by public diplomacy efforts (through the press releases) when they construct a specific reality for the same public diplomacy crisis. Three major Romanian national, daily newspapers and the U.S. embassy’s press releases were analyzed. The findings revealed that the Romanian media framed the public diplomacy crisis in a different way than the U.S. officials framed it. It seems that the U.S. failed in promoting its framing of the public diplomacy crisis to the Romanian media and therefore the public.

Networking and knowledge creation in Nigeria : A case study of a Swedish company’s establishment in NigeriaDuman, Leyla Mehtap, Eghagha, Dafe January 2012 (has links)
In this study the authors wanted to find out what role networking and knowledge play for a Swedish company that wants to enter the Nigerian market. This was done by using a qualitative approach and conducting interviews with HQS AB a Swedish company that entered Nigeria, the Swedish Trade Council and the Nigerian Embassy. No studies have previously been done about the internationalization process for a Swedish firm entering Nigeria therefore this essay provides empirical findings that can be useful for Swedish firms that want to enter Nigeria and for researchers within international business. The result from this study indicate that HQS AB had a successful market entry to Nigeria mainly because networking help them get in touch with partners that could add value by providing valuable connections that eventually helped HQS AB to start their business in Nigeria. Moreover, by attaining tacit knowledge in Nigeria, HQS AB managed to handle challenges in Nigeria such as the complex bureaucracy system and the business culture in the country.

New Interpretations Of Territoriality In Architecture: The Dutch Embassy In BerlinYavuz, Fatih 01 December 2006 (has links) (PDF)
In this study, it is aimed to relate architecture with the changing definitions of territory. In this context, the research will focus on the issue of in-between, where the boundaries between public and private domains are blurred in the modern world. The Dutch Embassy in Berlin designed by OMA / Rem Koolhaas is built upon a creative redefinition of blurring boundaries between & / #8216 / public& / #8217 / and & / #8216 / private& / #8217 / . Given the fact that the Embassy is a diplomatic structure for which the safety factor is one of the most important design criteria, how Koolhaas interprets the idea of openness, of transparency, modernity which are meant to symbolize the Netherlands, will be studied in this research.
