Arcabouço estratigráfico da Formação Serra Geral no Vale Principal da Sinclinal de Torres

A Província Basáltica Continental do Paraná-Etendeka registra o intenso vulcanismo do Cretáceo inferior que precedeu a fragmentação do supercontinente Gondwana. Tradicionalmente investigações sobre estas rochas priorizaram a aquisição de dados geoquímicos e isotópicos, considerando a pilha vulcânica como uma monótona sucessão de derrames tabulares e espessos. O presente trabalho propõe a análise das características físicas deste vulcanismo aplicando conceitos de arquitetura de fácies vulcânicas, integrados a estudos petrográficos e geoquímicos. A Sinclinal de Torres é uma estrutura tectônica localizada na porção sul do Brasil onde ocorrem preservadas as sequencias vulcânicas do magmatismo Paraná-Etendeka. Na área de estudo As rochas vulcânicas básicas podem ser divididas em duas unidades: derrames e campos de derrames pahoehoe (Unidade I) e derrames rubbly simples (Unidade II). Geoquimicamente as duas unidades pertencem a serie de baixo- TiO2 e ao magma tipo Gramado. As primeiras lavas pahoehoe são olivina basaltos, mais primitivos. A unidade I é composta por inúmeros derrames pahoehoe que ocorrem sobre os arenitos eólicos da Formação Botucatu. Essa lavas ocorrem como sheet pahoehoe, compound lavas, e lavas do tipo ponded nos vales interduna. O emplacement dessas lavas esta relacionado a baixas taxas de erupção sustentadas por longos intervalos de tempo. A unidade II é formada por espessas lavas simples do tipo rubbly, estas são caracterizadas por núcleos maciços e topos fragmentados (rubbly tops). Essas lavas são formadas por altas taxas de erupção e durante a fase principal do vulcanismo na área. O vale principal da Sinclinal de Torres tem uma evolução formada por derames compostos na porção basal e derrames simples nas porções superiores, siilar a de outras Províncias Basálticas Continentais. / The Parana-Etendeka Volcanic Province records the volcanism of the Earlier Cretaceous that precedes the fragmentation of the Gondwana supercontinent. Traditionally, investigations of these rocks prioritized the acquisition of geochemical and isotopic data, considering the volcanic stack as a monotonous succession of tabular flows. This work provides a detailed analysis of the physical conditions of the emplacement of these volcanic rocks, applying the facies architecture integrated to petrographic and geochemical data. Torres Syncline is a tectonic structure located in southern Brazil and where the Parana- Etendeka basalts are well preserved. The basaltic lava flows in the area can be divided in pahoehoe flow fields (Unit I) and simple rubbly flows (Unit II). Geochemically both units are low TiO2 and Gramado magma type. The first pahoehoe lavas are more primitive and are olivine basalts with higher contents of MgO. The fist unit is build up by innumerous pahoehoe lava flows and flow fields that cover the sandstones of Botucatu Fm. These flows occur like sheet pahoehoe, compound pahoehoe, and ponded lavas in the interdune settings. The emplacement of pahoehoe flow fields is related to sustain low eruptive rates. The unit two is formed by thick simple rubbly lavas, characterized by a massive core and a rubbly top. These flows are associated to high effusion rates and were formed during the main phase of volcanism in the area. The Torres Syncline main valley has a similar evolution when compared with other lips with compound flows at the base and simple flows in the upper portions.

Magma, Mass Spectrometry, and Models: Insights into Sub-Volcanic Reservoirs and the Processes that Form Them

<p dir="ltr">To better predict volcanic behavior, we must understand the processes that occur in the underlying magma reservoirs. This thesis contains three chapters that work together to better understand processes that occur in sub-volcanic reservoirs. Chapter 2 is a study of an ancient, coupled volcanic-plutonic system to determine the link between the volcanic and plutonic parts of the system. The IXL-Job Canyon magmatic system is an ~28-29 Ma system, which shows a rapid transition between eruption of tuffs and lava flows to construction of an upper-crustal pluton, via incremental emplacement. The system experienced an eruptive hiatus during and after pluton construction, until the eruption of a newly identified, younger, rhyolitic tuff. This work suggests that the absence of volcanic activity at the surface does not mean that the underlying magmatic plumbing system is also inactive. Chapter 3 compiles existing U-Pb zircon ID-TIMS data for upper-crustal, silicic magmatic systems, to determine the size and frequency of magmatic increments that accumulate to build up these systems. A Monte Carlo-based model is used to investigate the underlying distributions of the increment size and time between increments, and results in sizes and inter-event times that follow an exponential distribution. This work helps guide how we can try to introduce broadly generalizable complexities into thermal models of such systems. Chapter 4 focuses on organic interferences, a common issue that impacts the speed and quality of U-Pb and Pb-Pb data collected on TIMS instruments. We share two techniques used at the Purdue Radiogenic Isotope Geology Lab to first reduce and then avoid any residual organic interferences. These techniques help shorten analytical times, increasing throughput, and provide a means to reduce uncertainties on our measurements, since the presence of organic interferences can bias and increase the uncertainties on U-Pb dates.</p>

Granitic melt transport and emplacement along transcurrent shear zones : case study of the Pofadder Shear Zone in South Africa and Namibia

Thesis (MSc)--Stellenbosch University, 2013. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The close spatial and temporal relationship of shear-zones and magmas is commonly interpreted to indicate positive feedback between magma migration, granitic emplacement and shear-zone-associated deformation. Emplacement geometries and structural fabrics are however rarely preserved, hampering the study of shear-zones and granitic magmas interactions. This study focuses on an area around the Pofadder Shear Zone (PSZ) in Namibia and South Africa as a case study for granitic bodies, mainly as pegmatite sills and dykes, and their spatial and temporal relationships to a crustal-scale shear-zone. The PSZ is a NW-SE trending, dextral, Mesoproterozoic-Neoproterozoic transpressional shear-zone in Namaqualand, interpreted to have accommodated late-stage lateral escape of the Namaqua Metamorphic Complex in response to southward indentation of the Kaapvaal Craton around 1030 – 1080 Ma. In this study it is shown that the shear-core records an asymmetrical strain variation across the PSZ. This is indicated by pervasively banded ultramylonites, mylonites and the significant development of pervasive phyllonites at the southern margin, defining the internal ductile to brittle-ductile fabrics of the shear, during a progressive deformational evolution. Mapping of the PSZ fabrics and associated pegmatites documents how pegmatites are emplaced in structurally distinctive sites within, and adjacent to the PSZ. New U-Pb monazite ages derived from this study, show how pegmatite emplacement has occurred at different times of shear-zone development. The pegmatites are emplaced into earlier ductile to later brittle-retrograde fabrics that accompanied the ca. 45 Ma shear-zone exhumation. Pegmatites concentrated along the northern PSZ-margin are interpreted to be controlled by anisotropies developed axial planar to large km-scale and parasitic folds during the initial, predominately strike-slip stages of shearzone deformation that occurred as early as 1005 ± 5 Ma. Within the PSZ core, pegmatite emplacement is controlled by the syn-kinematic development of (a) subvertical, mylonitic and phyllonitic foliations and (b) fracture permeabilities created by synthetic Riedel shears and dextral dilatant jogs. The most significant pegmatite development around the PSZ is the Skimmelberg Pegmatite Stockwork (SPS) which forms an extensive interconnecting network of concurrent, foliation-parallel sills and thick (> 50 m) discordant dykes within the southern footwall of the PSZ. The dykes intrude as late as 958 ± 5 Ma into feather-shaped N-S extensional fractures (mode I) that developed due to episodic stick-slip at the boundary between the PSZ core and footwall rocks during periods of late-stage transpression. The SPS forms a steeply dipping fracture network that not only creates space needed for emplacement but effectively acts as a conduit for magma transport along the margin of the PSZ. The large extensional fractures of SPS create the necessary hydraulic gradients to tap the magma source of a regional trending pegmatite belt and form a sheeted complex adjacent to the PSZ. Therefore, this study documents how, during the progressive exhumation of a largescale transcurrent shear-zone, magma emplacement is not only concentrated within the highly permeable, high-strain domains (cores) of shear-zones but may be concentrated in diachronous, structurally controlled sites along the shear-zone margins. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die noue ruimte-tydsverband tussen skuifskeure en magmas word algemeen geïnterpreteer as ‘n aanduiding van positiewe terugkoppeling tussen magma migrasie, graniet-inplasing en skuifskeurgeassosieerde vervorming. The unsettling of colonialist and nationalist spaces : John Eppel's writings on Zimbabwe

The Rhodesian and Zimbabwean space-time involved the creation and adoption of hegemonic discourses that influenced ways of behavior, thinking, perceiving reality and particular ways of identity construction based on mystifying nationalisms. In raced and politically charged spaces, such grand narratives depended, for their currency, on stereotypes, essentialisms, domination and dichotomization of ‘nation as narration’. The metanarratives of the two spaces functioned as discursive tools for the legitimation of particular forms of exclusions, elisions and distortions. As discursive and polemical literary tools, these discourses always found sustenance and perpetuation in the existence of a different other. In other words, these constructed narratives sought to use difference as a basis for scapegoating and naturalizing racial, economic, political and resource asymmetries in the Rhodesian and Zimbabwean spaces. Power was wielded not in the service of, but against, the majority who are marginalized. This study explores John Eppel’s writings on the constructions of both Rhodesia and Zimbabwe as ideological spaces for the legitimation of power based on class, race and politics. I argue that Eppel’s selected writings are a literary intervention that proffers a satirically dissident critique of the foundational myths, symbols and narratives of Rhodesian and Zimbabwean space-time. The study argues that Eppel offers literary resistance to unproblematized identity compositions predicated on socially constructed but skewed categories that limit the contours of belonging and citizenship. The Rhodesian space is viewed as a palimpsest upon which is overwritten the Zimbabwean patriotic discourse that also authorize racism, marginalization, power abuse and other forms of exclusion. In examining Eppel’s satiric disruption of both spaces, I use certain strands of the Postcolonial Theory that problematize issues of nation, identity, race, tribe and power. Its usefulness lies in its rejection of fixities, of absolutes and in its general counter-hegemonic thrust. I therefore invoke the theorizations of Frantz Fanon, Homi Bhabha, Maria Lara, Paul Gilroy, Mikhail Bakhtin and Benita Parry. These form the theoretical base with which the study confronts Eppel’s writings on Rhodesia and Zimbabwe. The focal texts used are: Absent: The English Teacher (2009), selected short stories in White Man Crawling (2007) and The Caruso of Colleen Bawn (2004), The Holy Innocents (2002), Hatchings (2006), selected poems from Spoils of War (1989), Songs my Country Taught me: Selected Poems 1965-2005(2005) and D.G.G.Berry’s The Great North Road (1992). I conclude by arguing that Eppel creates a fictional life-world where race, origin, politics, class and culture are figured as polarizing identity markers that should be re-negotiated and even transcended in order to materialize a more inclusive multicultural society. To the extent that both the colonial and post-independence eras cross-fertilize each other in terms of occlusions, creating hegemonic narratives, resort to race, violence, silencing and erasure of certain subjectivities, Eppel advocates the ‘hatching’ of a new national, moral and inclusive ethos that supersedes the claustrophobia of both spaces. / English Studies / D. Characteristics of the late Mesozoic tectonic evolution of the South China block and geodynamic implications : Multi-approach study on the Qingyang-Jiuhua, Hengshan and Fujian coastal granitic massifs

The vast distribution and long duration of the Late Mesozoic magmatism in the eastern part of South China presents a unique case in the world. This offers a natural laboratory to study the process of magma genesis, the magma emplacement mode, the relationship between magmatism and tectonics, the geodynamic role on the magma emplacement and lithospheric evolution. Since 50's, particularly 90's of the last century, geoscientists have made important efforts in geological cartography and carried out numerous studies with remarkable scientific achievements, building a solid background to understand the tectonic evolution of the South China Block (SCB). However, certain fundamental questions mentioned above remain unsolved and/or are in hot debate. In order to make progress in these scientific issues, we have carried out in a multi-disciplinary study in the Late Mesozoic Qingyang-Jiuhua massif, Hengshan massif and Fujian coastal zone according to their distance with respect to the paleo subduction zone of the Paleo-Pacific plate, the ages of granitic massifs and related tectonics, including field observation on the structure geology, micro-observation on thin section, U-Pb dating on monazite, AMS, paleomagnetism, gravity modeling and P condition concern the granite emplacement. In the view of deformation in these granitic massifs and their country rocks, mode and influence of regional tectonics on the emplacement, though each studied zone reveals its distinguished characteristics, they show some intrinsic and common relationships between them. With our new results and integrating previous data, in this thesis, we discuss the tectonic context of emplacement of these Late Mesozoic magmatic massifs and the geodynamic evolution of the SCB., We propose a 3-step geodynamic model: (1) during 145-130 Ma period, the Paleo-Pacific plate subducted northwestwardly, the West Philippines micro-continent, approaching to SCB, important subduction-related arc volcanism was produced in the coastal areas of Southeast China coast (Zhejiang-Fujian-Guangdong), forming a back-arc extension tectonic system in SCB; (2) during 130-110 Ma period, due to the collision between the West Philippines microcontinent and SCB, the compressional tectonic structures were developed in the Changle-Na'ao coastal zone, producing ductile deformation zones. However, the inland of the eastern part of SCB was under a NW-SE extensional tectonic regime; (3) during 105-90 Ma period, a new subduction zone was developed in the SE flank of the West Philippines micro-continent, the subducting slab reached the Changle-Nan'ao tectonic belt, with the possible break-off of slab, the asthenospheric ascent was responsible for the important emplacement of plutonic massifs and dykes. The tectonics of the eastern part of SCB was characterized by a general extensional system in this period. This tectonic pattern has been significantly disturbed by the Oligocene-Eocene opening of the South China sea,and the Miocene shortening of the SCB margin in Taiwan. Of course, this model should be improved by more geological, geophysical and geochemical investigations.

Experiencing and evaluating digital augmentation of public urban places

Abstract The integration of digital technologies into urban life and environments has accelerated rapidly over the past few decades. It has been well established that this digital augmentation is changing the way we use and experience urban places; however, more studies, especially at the micro-level and from an architectural point of view, must be conducted in order to increase our understanding of the phenomenon. In this thesis, I examine the experience and evaluation of digitally augmented public urban places through four case studies, analysing participants’ experiences of adaptive lighting pilots and urban displays deployed in real world settings. Digital augmentations were found to be able to alter the genius loci significantly; furthermore, findings from these case studies demonstrate and explain how co-design, existing use patterns and user groups in urban places, climate and weather, and sense of place affect digital augmentations. The thesis makes a methodological contribution in the form of evaluation probes. This method was developed by modifying the cultural probes method for the purposes of evaluative research of design artefacts. The proposed method allows for the emic evaluation of design artefacts without direct researcher presence. In other case studies, I have used ethnographically inspired methods to gather research materials. In analysing research materials I make a theoretical contribution by introducing the concept of emplacement into architectural research. This concept highlights the importance of place in our experience as embodied individuals. Based on my empirical results, I argue for the design of meaningful emplaced experiences through digital augmentation. I also chart the design challenges that have emerged from my studies, utilising them to develop a holistic model that aims to describe experiences of digital augmentation in public urban places. Overall, the thesis proposes participatory design evaluation as a new approach in the field of architecture. It refers to the examination and utilisation of research participants’ intersubjective accounts in the evaluation of design artefacts from an experiential point of view. I argue for the benefits of this approach for the further inclusion of research knowledge in design and planning processes. / Tiivistelmä Viimeisten vuosikymmenten aikana digitaaliset teknologiat ovat asettuneet osaksi kaupunkielämää ja kaupunkipaikkoja. Tämä ilmiö, joka on helposti havaittavissa jokapäiväisessä elämässä, on tunnistettu myös tutkimuskirjallisuudessa, missä ilmiötä on kutsuttu nimellä kaupunkipaikkojen digitaalinen augmentointi. Tähän mennessä ilmiön on todettu muuttavan kokemuksiamme kaupunkipaikoista. Lisäksi on tunnistettu, että aihetta tulisi tarkastella myös erityisesti mikrotasolla sekä arkkitehtuurin alan näkökulmasta. Tässä väitöskirjassa tarkastelen julkisten kaupunkipaikkojen digitaalista augmentointia tapaustutkimusten avulla. Analysoin tätä varten osallistujien digitaalisen augmentaation kokemuksia, mitkä ovat tapahtuneet tutkimushankkeiden sisällä tuotettujen, aidoissa kaupunkiympäristöissä tehtyjen pilottien ja konstruktien yhteydessä. Lähestymistavaltaan työni on mikrotason evaluatiivista laadullista suunnittelututkimusta. Väitöstutkimukseni käsittää myös menetelmällistä kehitystyötä. Tämän kehitystyön tuloksena esittelen evaluaatioluotainmenetelmän. Menetelmä on kehitetty alkuperäisen kulttuuriluotainmenetelmän pohjalta. Esitän analyysin alkuperäisestä menetelmästä sekä tuloksia omista empiirisistä tutkimuksistani ehdotettua menetelmää tukevina perusteina. Muut tutkimuksessa käyttämäni menetelmät ovat alkuperältään etnografisia; olen kuitenkin soveltanut menetelmiä arkkitehtuuritutkimuksen käyttöön. Analysoidakseni näitä empiirisiä tuloksia olen myös tehnyt teoreettista kehitystyötä esittelemällä arkkitehtuurintutkimukseen emplacement-käsitteen (suom. paikantuneisuus). Olen käyttänyt tätä käsitettä analysoidakseni empiirisiä tutkimusmateriaaleja abduktiivisesti. Käsitteellä pyrin ymmärtämään ja teorisoimaan paikan roolia digitaalisten augmentointien ruumiillisessa kokemuksessa ja suunnittelussa. Kokonaisuudessaan kehitän väitöskirjassa osallistavaa suunnitteluevaluaatiota (engl. participatory design evaluation lähestymistapana. Tällä tarkoitan useiden intersubjektiivisten ja kokemuksellisten näkökulmien tuomista ja käyttämistä suunnittelutuotteiden evaluatiivisessa eli arvioivassa tutkimuksessa. Väitöksessäni puollan tämän lähestymistavan hyödyllisyyttä arkkitehtuurisuunnittelussa ja -tutkimuksessa.

City decision-making : optimization of the location and design of urban green spaces

Le besoin grandissant pour une planification urbaine plus durable et pour des interventions publiques visant à l'amélioration du bien-être collectif, ont grandement contribué à un engouement pour les espaces verts. Les parcs sont reconnus pour leur impact positif en zone urbaine dense, et nous sommes intéressés par l'application des concepts théoriques du domaine de la recherche opérationnelle pour assister les décideurs publics afin d'améliorer l'accessibilité, la distribution et la conception des parcs. Étant donné le contexte, nous sommes particulièrement motivés par le concept d'équité, et étudions le comportement des usagers des parcs à l'aide d'un modèle d'interaction spatiale, tel qu'appliqué dans les problèmes d'emplacement d'installations dans un marché compétitif. Dans cette recherche, nous présentons un modèle d'emplacement d'installations à deux étapes pouvant être adapté pour assister les décideurs publics à l'échelle de la ville. Nous étudions spécifiquement l'application aux espaces verts urbains, mais soulignons que des extensions du modèle peuvent permettre d'aborder d'autres problèmes d'emplacements d'installations sujets à des enjeux d'équité. La première étape de notre problème d'optimisation a pour but d'évaluer l'allocation la plus équitable du budget de la ville aux arrondissements, basé sur une somme du budget pondérée par des facteurs d'équité. Dans la deuxième étape du modèle, nous cherchons l'emplacement et la conception optimale des parcs, et l'objectif consiste à maximiser la probabilité totale que les individus visitent les parcs. Étant donné la non-linéarité de la fonction objective, nous appliquons une méthode de linéarisation et obtenons un modèle de programmation linéaire mixte en nombres entiers, pouvant être résolu avec des solveurs standards. Nous introduisons aussi une méthode de regroupement pour réduire la taille du problème, et ainsi trouver des solutions quasi optimales dans un délai raisonnable. Le modèle est testé à l'aide de l'étude de cas de la ville de Montréal, Canada, et nous présentons une analyse comparative des résultats afin de justifier la performance de notre modèle. / The recent promotion of sustainable urban planning combined with a growing need for public interventions to improve well-being and health in dense urban areas have led to an increased collective interest for green spaces. Parks have proven a wide range of benefits in urban areas, and we are interested in the application of theoretical concepts from the field of Operations Research to assist decision-makers to improve parks' accessibility, distribution and design. Given the context of public decision-making, we are particularly concerned with the concept of fairness, and are focused on an advanced assessment of users' behavior using a spatial interaction model (SIM) as in competitive facility locations' frameworks. In this research, we present a two-stage fair facility location and design (2SFFLD) model, which serves as a template model to assist public decision-makers at the city-level for the urban green spaces (UGSs) planning. We study the application of the 2SFFLD model to UGSs, but emphasize the potential extension to other applications to location problems concerned with fairness and equity. The first-stage of the optimization problem is about the optimal budget allocation based on a total fair-weighted budget formula. The second-stage seeks the optimal location and design of parks, and the objective consists of maximizing the total expected probability of individuals visiting parks. Given the non-linearity of the objective function, we apply a ``Method-based Linearization'' and obtain a mixed-integer linear program that can be solved with standard solvers. We further introduce a clustering method to reduce the size of the problem and determine a close to optimal solution within reasonable time constraints. The model is tested using the case study of the city of Montreal, Canada, and comparative results are discussed in detail to justify the performance of the model.
