"Gótico tropical: o sublime e o demoníaco em O Guarani" / Tropical Gothic: the sublime and the demoniac in The Guarany

Sá, Daniel Serravalle de 26 September 2006 (has links)
This work associates the Brazilian novel The Guarany (1857), by José de Alencar, to the main gothic novels that flourished in England in the second half of the 18th century. Traditionally celebrated by its indigenous content and considered a key text to Brazilian Romanticism, The Guarany shows evidence of graphic and discursive appropriations from the English fiction. This intertextuality can be seen specifically in the use of a sublime rhetoric (conductor of the gothic effect) and in the representation of the antagonist (lawlessness model). These elements are acclimatised by the author to the Brazilian context. The gothic features stem in the Brazilian novel as peripheral characteristics, comprising a tension between the progressive ideals intended by Alencar and the reality of an uncivilized country, marked by a quest for national identity post-emancipation. In the construction of the Brazilian identity thought out by Alencar there is the incorporation of specific traces of the English gothic at the same time other traces are rejected. This research provides evidences of gothic motives in The Guarany and offers an interpretation of the meaning of a gothic villain in a pre-republican Brazil.

Entre e vá para o diacho: O morro dos ventos uivantes enquanto obra dialética / Walk in and go to the deuce: Wuthering Heights as a dialectical work

Oliveira, Vinícius Domingos de 30 October 2017 (has links)
This work aims at analysing the novel Wuthering Heights, by Emily Brontë, having as focus its internal contradictions, which, put together, were named structure of tensions. It is that structure of tensions that transforms the novel into a dialectical work, in which the tensions exist not only as far as the content is concerned, but also its form. Our study focuses, respectively, on the issue of style and also on the issue of the narrative structure, aware that there are other issues of interest, but seeing in them a more primary importance, because they are connected to more immediate formal aspects. At first, we sought to understand the functioning of the tensions that different gothic, mythical and phantasmagorical forms cause on the novels realist fabric. Secondly, our goal was to comprehend the problematics of the narrative focus, concentrating specially on the unreliable discourse of Lockwood, the primary narrator, to which critics have not paid due attention. Lastly, we sought to argue that Emily Brontës work is not only born from a socio-historical crisis, but that it also puts in evidence aspects of the crisis of the novel form, managing to expose some of its ideological limits.

Finalmente, a terceira e última parte terá os romances Ciranda de Pedra, Daughters of the House e Lady Oracle como foco, a fim de apontar o modo como a narrativa gótica contemporânea assimilou as questões tratadas anteriormente / The present work is a study about the literary Gothic. Its main objective is to show the house as a crucial place for the development of themes related to the Gothic, highlighting the female body as a central figure. In the first part, theoretical studies related to the English novel are analyzed and a possible shift in the way the Gothic is dealt with is described. In the second part, relevant fictional works for the discussion of the house and of the female body in the Gothic tradition are analyzed in dialogue with pertinent theoretical ideas. Finally, the third and last part brings forth the novels Ciranda de Pedra, Daughters of the House and Lady Oracle in order to show how contemporary Gothic fiction deals with the issues previously discussed

Daniel Defoe was an important writer for the literary transformations that marked the spread of the novel in eighteenth-century England, genre that was in making during the period. Among the features of his fictional work, we note the similarity with some travel accounts – like those of Drake, Raleigh, Poyntz, Narborough, Dampier and Rogers – and recurring representations of the American continent – territories never visited by the author. The texts published by these travelers contain representations of regions of America as the Caribbean and the western coasts of South America, which, in turn, also appear as scenarios in the fictional works of the novelist. On the other hand, known for political engagement and participation in discussions on the directions of expansion of the British Empire, the author also makes use of this literature in his essays to support his arguments about the possibilities of imperial advance in the New World. Starting from important theoretical reflections for Cultural History, especially those related to the notions of representation and appropriation discussed by Roger Chartier, this research attempts to establish relations between the works of Defoe’s fiction and travel reports read by him. In this sense, the analysis is guided by some central questions: how and why these representations of colonial domains of other empires appear in fiction of Defoe? How these representations are related to the travel accounts that are mentioned by the author in his non-fiction works? To what extent the fictional author’s works have issues related to the expansion of the British Empire in the early eighteenth-century? Our main objective, therefore, is to try to support the hypothesis that Defoe’s novels contain representations of the New World, to some extent, that were built by appropriation of elements found in travel accounts read by him. Furthermore, we will try to understand how such representations insert their works of fiction in discussions about trade expansion possibilities and colonization in the Americas.

This work is dedicated to the novel 'Clarissa, or the history of a Young lady', written by Samuel Richardson, and published in 1747-48. My purpose was to make a historiographic research by using a literary narrative. This novel creates, in a literary way, many of the most important social, political, and religious conflicts of the Eighteenth Century English society. The mishaps of the life of the novel's protagonist, between the country and the city, allowed me to analyze the social and gender relations in the Enlightenment England. The plot tells us the story of Clarissa, an aristocratic maiden in rural England. She inherits an estate from her grandfather, which provokes a familiar disturbance. The deprecated old brother convinces the family to marry her to an odious man, to avoid her independence and to profit from the business. She refuses the marriage and her persecution begins at home. In order to escape from tyranny, she fled to London with the libertine Lovelace, who courts her against her family's will. Her wish for autonomy is interrupted when his abductor imprisons and rapes in a brothel. She wishes virtue and an independent soul, and that's why she chooses death, as the only possible way to maintain her moral intact. Indeed, my goal with this research was to understand the mentioned society from the pages of the novel, whose analysis also comes from questions and references external to the plot / Mestrado / Politica, Memoria e Cidade / Mestre em História

Ford Madox Ford and the arts : painting, music and the performing arts in the novels

Becquet, Alexandra 09 December 2013 (has links)
Ford Madox Ford is an impressionist writer who purports to be a historian of his own time and seems to represent modern life in a text conceived visually to make you see. He thus encourages a parallel between his writing and the nineteenth-century French painters’ art to be drawn ; yet he draws on a vast array of arts and aesthetics in his narratives to forge his impression according to his original and singular conception of art. That conception supports the artistic accumulation and association exercised in the novels while it shatters established aesthetic frameworks to merge arts and aesthetics in a form which adapts to reality to structure its formlessness and reveals it to offer an experience of it to the reader. In obeying pictorial and theatrical norms to be seen as pictures or in scenes, the narrative in fact discloses how modernity resists mimetic illusion. So painting and the theatre do not represent visibility but its loss, and the novels are forced by their object to embrace a thoroughly modern de-figuration which Fordian aesthetics endorses and the cinema realises. The latter then grants access to the vision of a fragmented and moving world totalled by the continuous metamorphosis of film, which besides encourages visual identification. However the cinema does not lead to the totalisation of the novel, nor to the dialog which the writer intends to have with his sympathetic reader in order to transfer his artwork onto him. That transfer does happen by means of the text and its structure but ultimately without figuration, through the music of the novel which at once governs, unites and abolishes representation, the arts and the text so the artwork be com-prehended.

英文小說教學與英文閱讀能力之關聯性探討及學生態度之研究 / An Approach to Teaching the English Novel to High School Students in Taiwan: its Correlations with English Reading Ability and the Students’ Attitudes to Novel Reading and Teaching

Unknown Date (has links)
The present study explored the correlations of teaching a complete English novel to high school students in Taiwan with their reading ability and investigated their attitudes to the novel reading and the novel class. The subjects were 124 freshmen students of a senior high school in Taipei, whose assigned material was the novel The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis. The reading and teaching of the novel lasted a semester from Sept. 2005 to Jan. 2006, with one period of English class each week spent on small group discussion and presentation monitored and facilitated by the teacher. After-reading worksheets were done by the subjects and handed in for teacher review and assessment. A reading pretest and a post-test were administered to the subjects before and after the treatment, and their reading ability improvement was examined using Paired T tests for all subjects and different ability groups from high to middle and low proficiency groups. Besides, an open-book novel test concerning the content of the novel was given to find out how well the subjects understand the novel. The subjects’ scores of the final periodic test on the English textbook were also gathered so that the researcher could investigate the correlations, with Significant Correlation tests, between any two of the three tests which all took place near the end of the semester: the reading post-test, the novel test and the final periodic test. Finally the questionnaires on the novel reading and teaching were filled in by the subjects and analyzed based on the subjects as a whole with frequency and percentage. Furthermore, distinctions were made based on the differences between those subjects who had read other novels before the treatment and those who hadn’t, and on the differences between those who finished reading the novel and those who didn’t, with Chi-square tests. The major findings of the study are as follows: 1. After the treatment ended, the English reading proficiency of all subjects in general has increased significantly, and was found to be correlated with the novel test significantly. 2. The novel test was found to be significantly correlated to the final periodic test for all subjects and the Middle and Low Proficiency Groups. 3. For the Middle Proficiency Group., the post-test was correlated to the final periodic test significantly. 4. The subjects’ more positive responses than negative ones to the novel reading included: feelings about the novel, how the novel reading helped increase reading speed and vocabulary, how the novel helped raise their interest in learning English. As to whether reading the novel increased English grammar knowledge or helped them learn the English textbook, only a minority of them answered positively. 5. The subjects’ attitudes towards the novel class and its activity were highly positive and the responses to having another English novel taught were quite enthusiastic. 6. Having finished reading the novel made a difference for the subjects in believing reading the designated novel promoted their willingness to read more English novels, while being experienced novel readers and having finished reading the novel both made significant differences in the subjects’ willingness to read other English novels on their own when time is allowed for reading. 7. The reading benefits for our subjects in order of importance were: reading comprehension, vocabulary, and grammar and sentence patterns. In conclusion, novel reading, as a form of extensive reading, helps senior high school students learn English cognitively as well as affectively. Instead of letting the students grope their own ways to the English novel, it helps them more when the novel becomes the class material and is taught in class. This study explores the English novel as a worthwhile course to teach in high school curriculum in Taiwan, not just as something left for the students to read all by themselves.

M. Thackeray was published in 1891 in the newspaper O Estado da Paraíba. It was first published in the British magazine Punch (1846) and translated later. The author's main purpose was to show–through satire– a different perspective of the aristocratic society in Victorian England. This paper aims to investigate the English works of fiction and non-fiction in the newspapers in the province of Paraiba, map out the serialized English novels and analyze more thoroughly the novel The Book of Snobs, which is the corpus of this research. Our aim is to understand the circulation and publication practices of the serialized English novel in Paraiba newspapers in the 19th century. We analyzed source materials such as articles, ads, announcements, as well as the English novel itself, which served as a basis to map the presence of English fiction in Paraíba's newspapers. We reflect with authors such as Chartier (1990; 2002; 2011), Barbosa (2007; 2011), Freyre (2000), Ramicelli (2009), Hansen (2004), among others, who helped us to understand the English cultural importance in the development of Paraíba, as well as to understand the space of English novels in serialized in Paraíba‘s newspaper.
