This study seeks to understand the formation processes of teachers that develop environmental education in schools. The research falls into the line of research of science education: teaching and learning processes at schools, universities and research laboratories. The main goals of this dissertation are: to understand the constitution of the teacher as an environmental educator; to understand the concepts of environmental education and environment from the narratives and subjectivity of teachers; to perceive the possibilities and limitations of environmental education in schools from the standpoint of teachers and their motivations for carrying it out in this context; and finally, to understand how the pedagogical practices of environmental education are proposed and developed in the school context. In this investigative path, the methodology used is qualitative and epistemological approaches are phenomenological and hermeneutical in nature. The first condition for participation in this survey was that the investigated subjects were teachers and alleged to be environmental educators. We analyze the narratives of four teachers who alleged to be environmental educators, two who work in kindergarten and two who work in the early grades of elementary school. To collect data we used a semistructured interview scheme. Teachers were then asked to produce a diary of a week of classroom stories. The narratives obtained were transcribed and analyzed through Textual Discourse, a recursive process of writing that begins with the production of units of meaning for further categorization and elaboration of metatexts. From the analysis three categories emerged; each constituted a chapter of this dissertation: (I) The Constitution of the Environmental Educator, (II) Environmental Education in Schools, and (III) Environmental Educations in Classrooms: experiences narrated by environmental education teachers. The expectation of this research is that from the knowledge of the experiences that happened and happen to teachers, from their subjectivities and narratives, one can understand the constitution of the teacher as an environmental educator and, once its constitutional process is known, we can understand how Environmental Education occurs in the scholar context.

Because of the environmental degradation in which the world finds itself, there are many discussions that point to environmental education as one of the ways to revert this scene. Proposals of courses and projects for environmental education are multiplying as a means of teaching alternative pedagogical procedures and practices for creating a new environmental attitude. The objective of this study was to evaluate the change in values and behavior of a group of teachers that took a course specializing in the Education of Environmental Educators given at a university in the state of S?o Paulo during 2002. Data, collected by means of a semi-structured questionnaire, was interpreted according to presuppositions of the analysis of content. Two categories were defined "a priori": the environment and environmental education, and the education of the teacher/researcher. We were able to show that there was a change in concepts of environment and environmental education, respectively, in six of the eight teachers interviewed. Regarding the education of teacher/researchers, six of them said they had experienced a change of concept in their pedagogical practices, but only three changed their behavior. Regarding the means to promote environmental education, six teachers indicated the involvement of the practice of participative-research-action that was used during the course. Keywords: Environmental Education; Continued.
