Becoming A Food CitizenHornung, Nicole 01 January 2013 (has links)
Environmental citizenship is positioned as a platform where the rights of social and environmental justice converge with civic engagement and responsibility. As industrialized economies continue to exhaust the limits of finite natural resources and exacerbate conditions of global climate change, scholars have questioned if environmental citizenship models offer a method for deepening obligations to a sustainable movement. In the material culture enjoyed by Western civilizations, existing research supports that an individual’s purchases are seen as an indicator of their values and identities. Consequently the commitment to responsible buying behavior or sustainable consumption is in a sense an expression of eco-citizenship. My thesis offers a critical perspective of Andrew Dobson’s ecological citizenship theory, by asking how sustainable consumption can be conceptualized in the existing political and economic infrastructures. Using a thorough case study of globally traded fish provisions, I investigate the existing barriers for eco-citizens attempting to realize their obligations to sustainable consumption. This analysis allows me to draw conclusions on how these barriers may inhibit ecocitizenship theories and ultimately a sustainable social movement. The structure of this thesis is broken into three parts. First, I define existing theories of ecological citizenship and sustainable consumption, including the theoretical propositions, requirements, and limitations. Secondly, I rely on Dobson’s conception of ecological citizenship and an instrumental case study of Pacific Salmon provisions to illustrate the barriers eco-citizens encounter in the current market and regulatory system. Finally, this paper concludes by proposing individual and institutional changes that will assist in fostering an eco-citizen community and the contribution my findings may have on existing green citizenship research.

Making power explicit in sustainable water innovation: Re-linking subjectivity, institution and structure through environmental citizenship.Wong, S., Sharp, Liz January 2009 (has links)
No / This article offers a new perspective on environmental citizenship by proposing the 'subjectivity-institution-structure' framework. Applying the framework to a sustainable water innovation project in north-west England, it argues that the meaning of environmental rights, the understanding of required environmental responsibilities, and the degree of public participation in decision-making, are shaped by individuals' subjective values, institutional arrangements and structural conditions. Our framework makes power explicit in the practice of environmental citizenship. It is intended to help set reasonable targets for sustainable development actions, which is particularly important when working with individuals with limited power.

: En komparativ studie om hur individer resonerar kring miljöansvar i vardagen / No one can do everything, but everyone can do something? : A comparative study of how individuals debate about environmental responsibility in everyday life.Tideström, Emma January 2016 (has links)
This study is based on discussions with three focus groups on the issue of individuals' views on environmental responsibility in everyday life. Responsibility is the red thread that emerged from the empirical material from the focus groups and the theoretical framework. The discussions have been focused on whether the problems from household related environmental issues are caused by individual or structural reasons and whether they should be resolved through changes in individuals' behavior or helping structures. Car usage has been a particular focus, since from all household activities that is the one causing the greatest environmental impact (SCB 2015b). Objectively speaking, most participants argued that environmental problems are or should be easy to solve and that the solutions should involve influencing individuals' values and norms, thus referring to internal factors. Based on the individual's own situation, however, most participants indicated mainly external factors as obstacles from living out environmental responsibility in the way that they felt they should. Tendencies of various psychological and sociological defense mechanisms could be distinguished, which is an expected impact of the cognitive dissonance that many apparently are experiencing regarding environmental responsibility. Working for enabling structures is an important conclusion from this study. Regarding the car's role it is likely that it is about finding more ways of helping individuals to change their travel mode since the environmental impact of car usage is something that most people are aware of, but feel unable to change. Solutions must therefore involve external factors.

Developing Ecological Citizenship: The Role of Political Agents Using Bronfenbrenner's Bioecological ModelGrabs, Teresa Victoria 01 January 2018 (has links)
Despite decades of research on environmental behavior, it is unknown how various political actors aid in the development of ecological citizenship (EC). The purpose of this correlational study was to determine the relationship between environmental worldview (NEP) and willingness to take action (WTTA) among political actors within 5 states: Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, and North Dakota. The overarching research question examined how EC can be increased within the 5-state region by identifying the similarities and differences in NEP and WTTA between state legislators, state partners, and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs). Bronfenbrenner's bioecological model provided the theoretical framework for the study. Out of 1,800 invited participants, 117 state legislators, 328 formal partnership directors, and 237 NGO administrators from the 5-state region participated in an online survey that measured their NEP, WTTA, and endorsement of EC principles. Nearly 20% of all respondents endorsed EC indicated by a high NEP and a high WTTA. Results of correlational analyses found a significant positive relationship between NEP and WTTA for each group. Further regression analysis found variation in group WTTA attributable to NEP varied from 32% for partnership directors and 36% for NGO administrators to 61% for state legislators. These findings indicated that EC can be affected by both private and public stakeholders. The implications for positive social change include demonstrating how state governments, in partnership with NGOs and other agencies, can increase EC within their states, and how improved partnerships can increase local opportunities to foster EC.

The current environmental crisis, characterized by the imbalance of human and natural relations, has shown that it is necessary to better understand the inherent aspects of society and the environment in their interrelationships, in order to transform theory into practice for the preservation and environmental Conservation. Environmental Education and environmental legislation seek to make people aware of "environmental citizens" by raising awareness and reflecting on social and environmental issues. Studies show that the level of environmental awareness of each individual is directly related to the degree of environmental perception and that this, directly reflects on the environmental behavior of the individual. The research was carried out with 5 Brazilian universities with a total of 553 respondents, three public universities and two private universities. For data analysis, the modeling of structural equations using the software SmartPLS 2.0 M3 was used. The result indicates that the environmental perception of the university has a focus on recycling, water and energy saving and reduction of consumption, apart from these issues, the variables that formed the environmental perception were not effective.

Previous issue date: 2011-05-18 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / The purpose of this study is to examine if the Technical-pedagogic Model of
Scholar Environmental Agenda of the city of Manaus is able to develop
environmental citizenship in the critical perspective for the sustainable development
which takes effect on de-growth. Such problem is due to the inability of the principle
of sustainable development deal adequately the environmental crisis. Accordingly, by
the critical path of the de-growth, environmental education is the first step for the
formatting of this counterculture as a tool indispensable to the exercise of
environmental citizenship. For this, it will proceed to the critical vision of sustainable
development by through the prospect of de-growth. From this contraposition, it will
penetrate to the realm of environmental education, evaluating which chain -
conservative and non conservative - will be able to generate environmental
citizenship along the lines of the counterculture of the de-growth. According to the
goal drawn, as for the methodology, it will be used the deductive method of approach
and the historical and comparative methods of procedure, without forgetting the
research technique of indirect documentation, in both forms: bibliographical and
documental. Therefore, it is concluded that the environmental education promoted by
the Technical-pedagogic Model of Scholar Environmental Agenda of the City of
Manaus is not capable of generating environmental citizenship in the manner of the
de-growth, because the technical-pedagogic model is guided by the conservative
environmental education, which caters to the designs of dynamic conservatism which
is the principle of sustainable development, moving away from the slope of non
conservative environmental education, unique chain of environmental education that
can provide the critical foundation necessary for the performance of environmental
citizenship in the manner of de-growth, enable to face the complex socioenvironmental
problems in the city of Manaus / O objetivo do presente trabalho consiste em analisar se o Modelo Técnicopedagógico
de Agenda Ambiental Escolar do Município de Manaus é capaz de
desenvolver cidadania ambiental sob a perspectiva crítica ao desenvolvimento
sustentável que se concretiza no decrescimento. Tal problemática se deve à
incapacidade do princípio do desenvolvimento sustentável tratar adequadamente a
crise ambiental.
decrescimento. A partir desta contraposição, adentrar-se-á especificamente no
contracultura do decrescimento.

The American Community College's Obligation to DemocracyPokross, Amy Elizabeth 12 1900 (has links)
In this thesis, I address the dichotomy between liberal arts education and terminal vocational training in the American community college. The need is for reform in the community college in relation to philosophical instruction in order to empower citizens, support justice and create more sustainable communities. My call for reform involves a multicultural integration of philosophy into terminal/vocational programs as well as evolving the traditional liberal arts course to exist in a multicultural setting. Special attention is focused on liberating the oppressed, social and economic justice and philosophy of education.
