Hyperspectral Image Processing Of Eo-1 Hyperion Data For Lithological And Mineralogical Mapping

San, Bekir Taner 01 September 2008 (has links) (PDF)
Hyperspectral data is a powerful tool for mineral explorations and lithological discriminations. EO1-Hyperion is a space borne hyperspectral system for hyperspectral imaging which is capable of 220 spectral image channels within the range of 400 to 2500 nm wavelengths. It has advantages over airborne systems such as data cost and coverage area. Although it has many advantages, much more uncertainty exists in application period, of which this uncertainty does exist in all processing stages starting from the data preparation to the end of analysis stages. The aim of this thesis is to state the potential use of Hyperion data for lithological and mineralogical discriminations to further develop new hyperspectral image processing approach, and to improve existing preprocessing method in literature. The proposed algorithm is mainly based on atmospheric corrections and cross track illumination correction of Hyperion data. In order to achieve this, two test sites were selected. Site 1 located on the Central Anatolia, (Ekecek test site) is used for lithological discrimination and Site 2 located on West Anatolia (Biga test site) is used for mineralogical discrimination. The obtained results were compared and assessed with the field verifications, spectral measurements and existing spectral libraries. In the end of the study it is found that when proposed approach is followed hyperspectral data is proven to be a useful tool for mineralogical discrimination in mono minerallic outcrops and valuable for lithological mapping in relatively homogenous un-covered outcrops.

The use of remote sensing and GIS for modelling aquaculture site suitability in relation to changing climate

Handisyde, Neil January 2015 (has links)
Globally fish production has continued to increase during recent years at a rate exceeding that of human population growth. However the contribution from capture fisheries has remained largely static since the late 1980s with the increase in production being accounted for by dramatic growth in the aquaculture sector. As of 2012 aquaculture accounted for approximately 42% of total fisheries production and 78% of inland fish production. In view of these figures it is unsurprising that for a number of regions aquaculture represents an important source of both food security and income. The use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and spatial data have seen substantial developments in recent years with the help of increasingly affordable computing capacity. From an aquaculture perspective the use of GIS has shown significant potential as a means of combining varied data sources, including those acquired via remote sensing, into models to provide decision support in relation to site selection. A common theme amongst site suitability assessments is the incorporation of climate variables relating to temperature and water availability. These factors in turn can have a significant influence on aquaculture in terms of water availability and quality, and temperature modulated growth performance. There is now a strong consensus that during the 20th century, and especially during recent decades, the earth has experienced a significant warming trend. There is also strong agreement that this warming trend is at least partially a consequence of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions and that some degree of further warming is inevitable. While global warming is typically discussed in terms of degrees centigrade of average global temperature increase the full effects in terms of climate changes will be varied both in terms of location and season. The current project focuses on site suitability for aquaculture in relation to changing climate conditions. Significant use is made of GIS and a range of spatial data including remotely sensed data and output from a series of climate models. The project consists of a number of key components: 1. Vulnerability of aquaculture related livelihoods to climate change was assessed at the global scale based on the concept of vulnerability to climate related impacts as a function of sensitivity to climate change, exposure to climate change, and adaptive capacity. Use was made of national level statistics along with gridded climate and population data. Climate change scenarios were supplied using the MAGICC/SCENGEN climate modelling tools. Analysis was conducted for aquaculture in freshwater, brackish, and marine environments with outputs represented as a series of raster images. A number of Asian countries (Vietnam, Bangladesh, Laos, and China) were indicated as most vulnerable to impacts on freshwater production. Vietnam, Thailand, Egypt and Ecuador stood out in terms of brackish water production. Norway and Chile were considered most vulnerable to impacts on Marine production while a number of Asian countries (China, Vietnam, and the Philippines) also ranked highly. 2. Site suitability for pond-based aquaculture was modelled at the global scale using a 10 arcsecond grid. Data from an ensemble of 13 climate models was used to model pond temperature and water availability for rain fed ponds under late 20th century conditions and for a 2°C global warming scenario. Two methods are demonstrated for combining data with a focus on the culture of warm water species. Results suggest both positive and negative impacts in relation to the 2°C warming scenario depending on location and season. Some areas are projected to see negative effects from maximum temperatures during the warmest parts of the year while for many regions there are likely to be potential increases in growth performance during colder months with possible expansion into previously unsuitable areas. 3. Methods for detecting surface water using remotely sensed data were investigated for Bangladesh. Use was made of data from the Moderate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Landsat ETM+ instruments with accuracy assessed against ground truth data collected in the field. A time series was constructed using all available MODIS data (approximately 13 years with an 8 day temporal resolution) to show areas of: surface water, land, and mixed land and water. The time series was then analysed to produce a layer showing the percentage of the total time series where surface water is indicated thus providing a spatial representation of flood prevalence. 4. A land cover data set was produced using 9 Landsat ETM+ scenes to cover the majority of Bangladesh. 10 different classification routines were evaluated including a decision tree approach unique to the current study. Classification results were assessed against two sets of ground control points produced: one based on field collected ground truth data and the other using a stratified random sampling procedure in association with visual analysis of high resolution true colour satellite images and ETM+ composites. The most accurate classifications were provided by the decision tree method developed for the current study and a Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) neural network based classifier. 5. Site suitability for pond-based aquaculture within Bangladesh was assessed using a GIS in combination with the ETM+ based land cover data, the MODIS based surface water time series, and components of the global site suitability assessment including modelled pond temperature data. Assessments were made based on late 20th century conditions and a 2°C global warming scenario. The MODIS surface water time series was also used to show the effects of storm surge flooding in relation to cyclone Aila that struck Bangladesh on 25th May 2009. The south and east of the country were considered most suitable for aquaculture due to more favourable cold season temperatures and higher water balance values. The north west of the country was considered least favourable due to higher maximum modelled pond temperatures and lower water balance values. The effect of the 2°C warming scenario was to enhance these trends. To date the potential spatial implications of changing climate for aquaculture has been significantly under researched. In this respect the current study provides a highly useful indication of where aquaculture related livelihoods may be vulnerable. In addition valuable and unique insights are provided into the distribution of areas of both potential increased, as well as decreased, suitability for existing aquaculture and further aquaculture development.

Lexikalischer und semantischer Wandel im Ägyptischen

Bock, Sara 29 May 2015 (has links)
Every spoken language is subject to constant change due to its use. This change can affect every level of the language, from phonology to semantics to grammar. The present dissertation is set out to illuminate the semantic and lexical change of the Egyptian language, which can be followed over four thousand years and is therefore one of the longest attested languages of mankind. This and its excellent state of sources make it the ideal subject of a diachronic study. After a quantitative analysis of the lexemes of a carefully chosen set of texts, which provides the foundation of the study, the main part of the dissertation examines four semantic fields with regard to its mode of change. These semantic fields, kinship terms and terms for body parts as well as verbs for cognition and perception, are part of the basic vocabulary of every language, which guarantees the comparability of the results. In addition to the description of individual processes of change, the paper pursues questions of the course, the range, and the types of semantic and lexical change of the Egyptian language. The intention was to form general statements which are of relevance to questions of the study of language change, the Diachronic Semantics as well as the Historical Linguistics, by serving as comparison as well as verification to studies of other languages. As a result of the present paper, some general regularities of the semantic and lexical change of the Egyptian language were established, in addition to the observation of some interesting individual processes of language change. These regularities were already partially confirmed by observations made in other languages and could, after further examination, turn out to be universal tendencies of semantic change.

Political Participation: discriminant contribution of ideological attitudes, values and socio-psychological variables / Participación política: el aporte discriminante de actitudes ideológicas, valores y variables sociopsicológicas / Participação política: a contribuição discriminante de atitudes ideológicas, valores e variáveis sócio-psicológicos

Sorribas, Patricia, Brussino, Silvina 25 September 2017 (has links)
This paper identifies variables that discriminate between participants and non-participants considering electoral and non-electoral dimensions of political participation in Córdoba, Argentina. A study was conducted by survey on a representative sample of the population (N = 450). The discriminant analysis allowed recognizing the contribution of right-wing autho ritarianism (RWA), collectivism, political collectivism, political interest and of participatory measure of “political efficacy”, to such differentiation in two dimensions of participation: electoral-campaign and contact with organizations and political figures. These results show the relationship of RWA with different political behavior of party preferences; and verify the relationship of different values and a participatory measure of “political efficacy” with broad participation repertoires.

Modifying naphthalene diimide copolymers for applications in thermoelectric devices

Shin, Younghun 16 October 2020 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to modify and improve the n-type semiconducting polymer PNDIT2 for thermoelectric generators (TEGs) applications. Although the PNDIT2 is considered a prime n-type material due to its high electron mobility, low air-stability of radical anions after doping and the low doping efficiency with molecular dopants are severe drawbacks and lead to limited application in TEGs. To this end, the backbone structure of PNDIT2 is modified by polymer analogous thionation and the branched aliphatic side chains are replaced by branched, fully oligoethylene glycol-based side chains. PNDIT2 was prepared by DAP and subjected to various conditions of thionation. The polymer analogous thionation of PNDIT2 was done by using Lawesson´s reagent (LR). The O/S conversion was controlled by solvent, T and amount of LR. For an excess of LR, only two carbonyls out of four present in the NDI repeating unit are converted to thiocarbonyls with regioselective trans-conformation (2S-trans-PNDIT2). Chlorobenzene (CB) is an excellent solvent in which the highest O/S conversion was achieved and the best reproducibility. Tri- or tetra- substitution in one NDI repeat unit did not take place due to steric hinderance of T2 comonomer. Thionation affected all properties. The lower thermal stability, UV-vis spectra were bathochromically shifted and a new band of the thionated NDI unit appeared. Chain aggregation was stronger as probed by UV-vis and NMR spectroscopy. The LUMO energy level of 2S-trans-PNDIT2 was lowered by 0.2 eV, giving -4.0 eV. This is at the border of what is needed for air stability of radical anions. The scattering on thin films indicated lower order and less crystalline textures of 2S-trans-PNDIT2 compared to PNDIT2. Likewise, electron mobility decreased with increasing conversion. While chapter 2 focused on the synthesis, opto-electronic and thermal properties of 2S-trans-PNDIT2, chapter 3 was concerned with details on morphology and electrical properties. To this end, 2S-trans-PNDIT2 was doped by N-DPBI in toluene at various concentrations and conductivities were determined. Undoped 2S-trans-PNDIT2 exhibited one order of magnitude higher conductivity than pristine PNDIT2. After doping with 5 wt.-% N-DPBI, the conductivity of 2S-trans-PNDIT2 increased by two orders of magnitude and reached a maximum conductivity of 6*10-3 S/cm at 15 wt.-% doping. This value was approx.5 times higher than the conductivity of PNDIT2 at the same doping level. Furthermore, the stability of conductivity of doped 2S-trans-PNDIT2 under ambient conditions was investigated and compared to PNDIT2. Upon exposure air (50 % humidity), conductivity of PNDIT2 rapidly decreased to the pristine film level, while the conductivity of 2S-trans-PNDIT2 was reduced by a factor of less than two after 16 h. While the initially higher conductivity of 2S-trans-PNDIT2 is ascribed to its less crystalline structure and thus higher doping efficacy, its better stability can be ascribed to the lower LUMO energy level. The topic of chapter 4 is on the synthesis of fully ether-based, polar and branched side chains (EO) and introduction into PNDIT2. The advantages of polar side chains over aliphatic side chains have been reported. However, previously reported PNDIT2 with linear polar side chains is limited in MW due to solubility. The EO side chain with amine functionality was synthesized in three steps and used for monomer synthesis (EO-NDIBr2). Initial efforts to use DAP to prepare P(EO-NDIT2) from EO-NDIBr2 and pristine bithiophene gave only oligomeric products. Stille polycondensation was therefore used, giving high MW. As extreme aggregation occurred in solvents used for GPC, absolute MW were determined by 1H NMR spectroscopy. To enable reliable end group analysis, model compounds with methyl end groups were prepared. In P(EO-NDIT2), methyl end groups are dominating as a result of incorrect transmetalation from the stannylated monomer. The end groups seen by 1H NMR spectroscopy were further confirmed by MALDI-ToF. Absolute MW were between Mn,NMR= 11 kg/mol to 116 kg/mol depending on reaction conditions. Aggregation was further probed by UV-vis and NMR spectroscopy as a function of the solvent and temperature, shining light into the degree of aggregation, which is important for thin film preparation. Solvent quality decreased with the following order: CHCl3, 1-Chloronaphthalene (CN), 1,2-Dichlorobenzene (o-DCB), DMF, 1,4-Dioxane, CB and Anisole (AN). According to these results, three doping protocols based on CB and o-DCB, as well as temperature variations, were used to prepare films for conductivity measurements. The best results were obtained for processing from chlorobenzene at 80 °C, which aggregates are dissolved. Strikingly, maximum conductivity values were achieved already for 5 wt.-% dopant concentration. The PF reached a maximum even for 1 wt.-% doping level. This unusually low value is promising and suggests a high doping efficacy.

LHCb Upstream Tracker box : Thermal studies and conceptual design

Mårtensson, Oskar January 2016 (has links)
The LHC (Large Hadron Collider) will have a long shut down in the years of 2019 and 2020, referred to as LS2. During this stop the LHC injector complex will be upgraded to increase the luminosities, which will be the first step of the high luminosity LHC program (which will be realized during LS3 that takes place in 2024-2026). The LHCb experiment, whose main purpose is to study the CP-violation, will during this long stop be upgraded in order to withstand a higher radiation dose, and to be able to read out the detector at a rate of 40MHz,compared to 1MHz at present. This change will improve the trigger efficiency significantly. One of the LHCb sub-detectors the Trigger Tracker (TT), will be replaced by a new sub-detector called UT. This report presents the early stage design (preparation for mock-up building) of the box that will be isolating the new UT detector from the surroundings and to ensure optimal detector operation. Methods to fulfill requirements such as light and gas tightness, Faraday-cage behavior and condensation free temperatures, without breaking the fragile beryllium beam pipe, are established. / LHCb, LS2 and LS3 Upgrade

Landsat and Sentinel-2 based analysis of land use in the Brazilian Amazon: The agricultural frontier of Novo Progresso

Jakimow, Benjamin 27 February 2023 (has links)
The Amazon is in transition, and its rainforests are increasingly threatened by agricultural expansion. A slash-and-burn agriculture and mostly extensive cattle grazing are responsible for large-scale ecosystem damage and high levels of greenhouse gas emission. Earth observation systems such as the Landsat and Sentinel-2 satellites enable large-scale analysis of these developments and are essential for evaluating measures to protect the Amazon. However, cloud cover makes remote sensing analysis challenging in the core tropics. The present work aims to improve the detection of agricultural processes typical of deforestation frontiers, focusing specifically on the Novo Progresso region, Pará, Brazil. To that end, the EO Time Series Explorer was developed to interactively visualize the different dimensions of dense multi-sensor time series and to create reference data. Based on this software tool, the Clear Observation Sequences (COS) approach was developed to capture highly dynamic agricultural processes such as low-load fires or tillage operations. Finally, the investigation of land-use changes in the Novo Progresso region between 2014 and 2020 shows an alarming increase in deforestation and agricultural fires since Jair Bolsonaro’s accession to the presidency. Analysis by land-use zone and property size shows that protected areas have become less effective and that larger properties are driving deforestation. This work demonstrates the value of synergistic use of satellite time series for remote sensing analysis of agricultural processes. Further densification of time series using higher spatial and spectral resolution sensors promises to further improve the description of agricultural dynamics.
