A reunião de africanos, escravos e libertos, em grupos étnicos foi uma das características das formas de organização e de sociabilidades dessa população em várias regiões do Brasil. A princípio, essas categorias étnicas foram criadas pelos indivíduos que lidavam com o comércio de escravos, quais sejam, traficantes, comerciantes e compradores, carregando consigo atributos físicos, morais e características culturais que tinham como objetivo facilitar o tráfico. Mais tarde, essa distinção étnica também foi incorporada pelos próprios africanos, escravos e libertos, como um elemento da sua própria organização. Esta dissertação tem por objetivo estudar o processo de redefinição dos grupos étnicos e a construção das identidades africanas em torno de alguns espaços de sociabilidade na cidade de São Paulo, durante a primeira metade do século XIX. Pretende-se discutir, baseando-se no conceito de grupo étnico elaborado pelo antropólogo Fredrik Barth, as formas de atribuição e de identificação desses grupos por agentes externos, como a Igreja Católica e os proprietários de escravos. Esse conceito também tem como pressuposto a incorporação pelos próprios africanos, que passaram a se identificar com esses grupos éticos, direcionando suas formas de organização e de sociabilidade, sobretudo por meio da associação em irmandades religiosas, reunião em batuques, capoeiras, danças. Essa identificação a determinados grupos levava em conta características que consideravam em comum como a língua, a ascendência e a visão de mundo. A intenção é perceber como a incorporação a determinados grupos étnicos direcionou as formas de organização, as manifestações de suas tradições por meio de aspectos culturais, a relação com os diferentes grupos étnicos e com outras camadas da sociedade / The reunion of African people, slaves and freemen, in ethnic groups was the one of the characteristics of the forms of organization and of sociabilities of this population in some regions of Brazil. Firstly, these ethnic categories had been created by the individuals who dealt with the commerce of slaves, which were dealers, traders and purchases with physical and moral characteristics and cultural attributes which had as objective to facililate the traffic. Later, this ethnic distinction also was incorporated by the African people themselves, slaves and freemen as an element of the proper organization. This dissertation has as objective to study the process of redefinition of the ethnic groups and the construction of the African identities around some spaces of sociabilities in the city of São Paulo, during the first half of the 19th century. It is intended to argue, based on the concept of the ethnic group supplied by the anthropologist Frederik Barth, the forms of attribution and identification of these groups by external agents as the Catholic Church and the proprietors of slaves. This concept also has as estimated the incorporation by the African people themselves who had identified with these ethnic groups, directing their forms of organization, after all, by the means of the association in religious brotherhoods, reunion in batuques, capoeiras and dances. This identification to determined groups took into account some characteristics that are considered in common as the language, the ancestry and the vision of the world. The intention is to perceive as the incorporation of determined ethnic groups directed the organization forms, the manifestations of their traditions by the means of the cultural aspects, the relation with different ethnic groups and with others social classes

Cette thèse est consacrée à l’évolution de la place des femmes artistes d’origine miao, mongole et ouïgoure dans le champ artistique chinois 1950-2010. Son axe central consiste à montrer comment les mutations sociales ont modifié la place des femmes, et, plus précisément, comment leur place a été redéfinie dans un discours identitaire. Si dans les années 1950-1980, les œuvres portant sur l’idéologie collectiviste et la représentation de « la femme d’acier » occupaient une place primordiale, dans les années 1981-2000, les femmes artistes décrivent la situation réelle des femmes et mettent l’accent sur la question de l’identité des femmes modernes et sur des relations entre les femmes et les hommes. Elles cherchent à maîtriser des formes d’expression artistique ethnique plus variées et plus légitimes. Depuis 2001, afin de préserver les cultures ethniques face à la mondialisation, les femmes artistes essaient d’interpréter la profondeur de la culture ethnique dans leurs œuvres. C’est vers les traditions, telles que la mémoire historique, les mythologies, les chansons et les danses, que se tournent les artistes femmes issues des ethnies minoritaires à la recherche de racines culturelles. Cette recherche s’appuie à la fois sur l’analyse de la situation socio-culturelle des femmes artistes issues des ethnies minoritaires, l’analyse de la construction de l’identité féminine et l’analyse des particularités de l’expression des femmes artistes eu égard à leur appartenance ethnique. / This thesis is devoted to studying the evolution of the place of female artists with Miao, Mongolian and Uygur origins in the Chinese artistic field 1950-2010. The central theme is to demonstrate how social changes have changed the place of women, and more specifically, how the place of women has been redefined in an identity discourse. If in the years 1960-1980, the art works dealing with the collectivist ideology and the representation of the ‘iron woman’ occupied a primordial place, in the years 1981-2000, the female artists describe the real situation of the women and put the focus on the question of the identity of modern women and the relations between women and men. They seek to master the different forms of ethnic artistic expression. Since 2001, in order to preserve ethnic cultures facing the globalization, the female artists are trying to interpret the depth of ethnic culture in their art works. It is towards traditions, such as historical memory, mythologies, songs and dances, that the female artists with ethnic minority origins are looking for their cultural roots. This research is based at the same time on the analysis of the socio-cultural situation of female artists with minority origins, the analysis of the construction of the feminine identity and the analysis of the particularities of the expression of female artists because of their ethnicity.

Human genetic factors involved in immunity to Plasmodium falciparum infection

<p>This study investigated the associations between IL-4 -590 C/T and IL-10 -1087 A/G polymorphisms and malariometric indexes in the Fulani and the Dogon ethnic groups living in sympatry in Mali and differing in susceptibility to malaria. The correlations between antibodies level and parasitological data as well as splenomegaly were assessed. The impact of IL-4 -590 variants on the levels of the studied antibodies was also studied. </p><p>The allele and genotype frequencies of both studied SNPs differed significantly between the two groups. The Fulani IL-4 T allele carriers had a significantly higher infection prevalence compared with those carrying the CC genotype. No correlation between anti-malarial antibody levels and parasite prevalence was seen in any of the communities. In the Fulani, the increase in total IgE levels was related to the presence of infection. Malaria-specific IgG4 levels were negatively correlated to the number of clones within the Fulani. The Fulani IL-4 T allele carriers had higher total and malaria-specific IgE levels, compared to the CC genotype carriers. These results suggest that the amount of antibodies may not be the key element in the protection against malaria. IgG4 might be involved in protection against malaria. The impact of IL-4 -590 variants on the antibody levels may be affected by other genetic/epigenetic/epistatic or environmental factors. </p><p>In the study in Senegal, multiplicity of infection (MOI) increased after the transmission season in all subjects, except in α-thalassaemic and in G6PD-mutated children, suggesting that α-thalassaemia may protect against infection by certain parasite strains. G6PD-mutated individuals may resist against increase in MOI after the transmission season due to rapid clearance of infection at an early stage. HbAs and the ABO system do not affect MOI in asymptomatic individuals. MOI was positively correlated to parasitemia, and did not vary over age (in the range of 2 to 10 years). No relation between MOI and clinical attack was noted. </p>

This dissertation is a study of the changing living conditions for the Sami in Swedish Såpmi (Samiland) throughout the twentieth century with an analysis based on a gender and ethnic perspective. At the turn of the century, the Sami lived as nomadic reindeer herders and were primarily self- sufficient. This changed as the reindeer herders shifted from a self-sufficient lifestyle to a money economy tor a variety of reasons. Over time they became more integrated in the dominant Swedish society and even more dependent on it. Reindeer herding has become increasingly mechanized since the I960's with rationalizations as a result. Even in to the 1990's the industry was the object of streamlining ettorts. A process of masculinization has also occurred and today's reindeer herding is a distinctly male coded profession. Women do not regularly participate in the daily work of reindeer breeding and their ability to have any direct influence on the herding districts (sameby) is limited. This is also largely true in terms of the Sami Parliament, the Sami popularly elected body. The Sami population has experienced unfavorable special legislation and regulation from the State. The population was divided into several different categories with different rights. Sami women were marginalized two-fold and subordinated, partly because of their ethnic affiliation (as Sami) and partly because of their sex (as women). This continues to be true today. The analysis of gender division of labor shows that a married couple had their own autonomous areas of power within the household. The wife was however still subordinate to her husband in his role as master of the family. The older reindeer herding society was not noted for its equality. There was a distinct hierarchy based on sex, age, and social status. Division of labor in modern reindeer breeding is in principle based on the same normative system as the older nomadic society. The study of the ethnic processes in Såpmi shows among other things that from a Sami perspective, a person is Sami who is related to other Sami and whose actions are based on a Sami identity. It is also clear today that there are many different Sami identities, that an individual person draws from a number of such identities and that it is the context that determines which of these are active in any given situation. The Sami identity is sex-based, i.e. there is a difference between a "male Sami" and a "female Sami." Sami women, unlike Sami men, cannot be politically active while also being active based on their sexual identity. Were they to do so, they would be excluded by definition from their ethnic group. Sami women must therefore subordinate themselves as women to be "genuine" Sami. They thereby contribute to their own marginalization and help maintain their own subordinated position in the Sami society. / digitalisering@umu

The potential for acquisition of ethnic archives : a case study of five Chinese organizations in Vancouver, British Columbia

This thesis is a study of attitudes towards the final disposition of archival records among representatives of five organizations in the Chinese community, Vancouver, British Columbia. The findings reveal three different types of attitude towards the final disposition of their archival records: "closed", "fairly open", and "open". Organizations with a political mission, a long history, and financially independent of government support tend to hold a "closed" attitude towards the final disposition of archival records; those with a project-oriented mission, existing for a limited time, and financially dependent of the government tend to hold an "open" attitude; those with missions such as cultural and social services tend to hold a "fairly open" attitude. The size of an organization does not influence the attitudes. The organizations open or fairly open towards access of their records possess higher potential for acquisition of ethnic archives by a public archival institution, whereas those closed to access of their records hold lower potential for acquisition. It is argued that these findings, though preliminary in nature, have significant importance for the archival community as regards the development of acquisition policy and strategy in keeping with the situation anddesires of records generators, in this case, ethnic groups. Its implications are especially significant in the Canadian setting, being a country widely acknowledged to have many ethnic groups.
