Exploratory study on factors impacting job satisfaction among ethnic minority employees

As organizations are being confronted with the pool of people seeking employment that are increasingly diverse in terms of ethnicity (Oerlemans et al. 2008), and as job satisfaction has been one of the important drivers for work-related well-being in employees, there have been a number of studies about job satisfaction among ethnic minorities (Spector 1997). Although there is a growing body of research on job satisfaction and ethnic minorities at work, there is still a paucity of studies regarding factors impacting job satisfaction among ethnic minorities specifically. The present study explores contributing factors impacting ethnic minorities’ job satisfaction, using qualitative method based on Motivator-Hygiene Theory (Frederick 1966, 2003) and Job Characteristics Theory (Hackman and Oldham 1976). Three Hispanic/Latino Americans and three Asian Americans, all workers in construction sites in Samsung semiconductor in Austin, Texas, were individually interviewed with open-ended questions by the author in the summer of 2010. Participants reported professional development opportunities and appropriate and well-deserved compensation as the main factors impacting job satisfaction, while heavy workload, not being recognized, time constrains, and stressful work environment were reported as factors in dissatisfaction. Family, personal goals and money were the three most important personal values that participants considered when making decisions about their career paths. It is important to continue to examine other predictors of and contributing factors to job satisfaction of ethnic minority employees, so that their employers and managers in the work place can form a better understanding of these populations and work effectively with them. The goal of my diploma thesis is to find out, what kind of relations exists between minority and majority at Czech primary schools. Vietnamese minority was chosen for this thesis. We research differences in perception between girls and boys and between older and younger pupils. We also research differences between formal and informal situations. Another goal is to find out if pupils have some basic knowledge about native land of this minority. The thesis is divided into two parts, theoretical and practical. The theoretical part includes the explanation of basic terms about minorities at all, historical and cultural information about Vietnam, information about life and distribution of Vietnamese in the Czech Republic and also information about Vietnamese pupils in Czech schools. In the practical part the questionnaire method is used for pupils and the interview is used for teachers. Results of these research studies are processed into graphs and tables, which are supplemented by relevant comments.

Heritage Language Preservation and its Impact on Integration: The Case of the Vietnamese in the Czech Republic.

Heritage language preservation or conversely, a language shift (a loss or decrease of language proficiency) can directly impact a minority ethnic group's integration into a host society. Multiple theories and studies have demonstrated that students from an ethnic group who are encouraged to celebrate their ethnicity and practice their heritage language have better relationships with parents and peers and overall are more academically and cognitively advanced, less likely to commit crimes and have more economic opportunities available to them. In short, these individuals would seem more likely to successfully integrate into a host country's society. Therefore, looking at the Vietnamese community in the Czech Republic I attempted to gauge the standing of Vietnamese as a heritage language within this ethnic community by using qualitative research to better understand the existing sociolinguistic landscape. Ultimately, what I determined from my research is that heritage language preservation can act as a barrier to integration for the first generation if retaining the heritage language comes at the expense of learning the host country's language. This diploma thesis focuses on activities of the Silesian Autonomy Movement (RAŚ) on the platform on the Polish Parliament, while using theoretical concepts advocacy coalition and agenda setting. In the first part of my thesis, I will define goals of RAŚ and identify three most important ones, which will create the core of my research: Silesian language statute, minority statute of Silesians and problem of Upper Silesian autonomy. Then, I will define political subsystems, which reflect the three already mentioned main topics. Within each political subsystem, I will define two competing advocacy coalitions. In the next chapter I will analyse respective political subsystems and discussions, which is taking place among competing advocacy coalitions. I will stress the importance on the process of policy agenda setting. As a parameter of success I will seek for the existence of legislative proposals, proposed by advocacy coalitions. Then, I will analyse processes within respective political subsystems since 2005. In the final part of my thesis, I will strive to answer my research questions and compare the results with my hypotheses. Thanks to my research, I will be able to better understand activities of RAŚ, and of advocacy coalitions respectively, on national level.

Black Youth Matter: An Arts-based and Narrative Study of the Experiences of Black Youth Transitioning out of Child Welfare Care and Their Access to Housing

Abstract Background: There has been minimal research conducted on the unique experiences of Black youth who transition out of the child welfare system, and as well as the factors that contribute to their success or failure to accessing housing. Purpose: The purpose of study is to explore the needs and experiences of Black youth using Critical Race theory, BlackCrit and Social Capital theory to better understand their experience accessing safe, affordable housing within the Greater Toronto Area after transitioning out of child welfare. Methods: Five Black youth were recruited using site sampling and snow-ball sampling to participate in an arts-based and narrative study. The data was then analyzed in a constant comparative method. Findings: The findings from this study suggest the following things: The emotional roller coaster of being in care, the importance of community and sense of family, youth voices in decision-making process, unpreparedness for independent living, the unawareness of housing options, youth definition of good housing, more resources are needed prior to departure of child welfare. Implications and Recommendations for Change: In light of the findings in this study, a number of recommendations are proposed for improving outcomes for Black youth leaving care and their access to housing. Below is a summary of recommendations: A. To focus on building and providing genuine relationships through a caring adult and permanency for Black youth in care B. Centralize and value the voices of Black youth in care throughout their post-care planning, policy development and research C. To address and respond to the unique experiences that Black youth with disabilities face within the housing market when preparing them for independence outside of the CWS D. To apply a Housing first Youth approach It is my hope that this information will be used to support policy changes and program development in child welfare and the rental housing market that can result in more successful outcomes for Black youth. / Thesis / Master of Social Work (MSW)

This thesis deals with the integration of the Vietnamese community in the Czech Republic which has its specifics and significantly differs from the integration of other foreigners living in the Czech Republic. The characteristics of the Vietnamese community are for example the high percentage of those who live here on the permanent residence permit, then very low unemployment and at last the majority of the community is doing their own business on the trade licence. The other important part is the issue of the acquisition of knowledge of the Czech language. The theoretical part of the thesis firstly defines the number of Vietnamese living in the Czech Republic, historical development of this community and their characteristics. Then the thesis deals with the term of integration; this term is properly defined and the particular dimensions of integration are described as well. Abstract. The work is analysing the language situation in Czech communities in Crimea and Novgorodovka village. The description of Russian and Ukrainian influence on Czech language phenomena and transformations on all language levels is given, as well as some features of Northeast Bohemian preserved in spoken Czech of Crimean settlers.
