Analysis of the Bioelectric Impedance of the Tissue-Electrode Interface Using a Novel Full-Spectrum Approach

Sempsrott, David Robert 15 January 2014 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Non-invasive surface recording of bioelectric potentials continues to be an essential tool in a variety of research and medical diagnostic procedures. However, the integrity of these recordings, and hence the reliability of subsequent analysis, diagnosis, or recommendations based on the recordings, can be significantly compromised when various types of noise are allowed to penetrate the recording circuit and contaminate the signals. In particular, for bioelectric phenomena in which the amplitude of the biosignal is relatively low, such as muscle activity (typically on the order of millivolts) or neural traffic (microvolts), external noise may substantially contaminate or even completely overwhelm the signal. In such circumstances, the tissue-electrode interface is typically the primary point of signal contamination since its impedance is relatively high compared to the rest of the recording circuit. Therefore, in the recording of low-amplitude biological signals, it is of paramount importance to minimize the impedance of the tissue-electrode interface in order to consistently obtain low-noise recordings. The aims of the current work were (1) to complete the development of a set of tools for rapid, simple, and reliable full-spectrum characterization and analytical modeling of the complex impedance of the tissue-electrode interface, and (2) to characterize the interfacial impedance and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) at the surface of the skin across a variety of preparation methods and determine a factor or set of factors that contribute most effectively to the reduction of tissue-electrode impedance and noise contamination during recording. Specifically, we desired to test an initial hypothesis that surface abrasion is the principal determining factor in skin preparation to achieve consistently low-impedance, low-noise recordings. During the course of this master’s study, (1) a system with portable, battery-powered hardware and robust acquisition/analysis software for broadband impedance characterization has been achieved, and (2) the effects of skin preparation methods on the impedance of the tissue-electrode interface and the SNR of surface electromyographic recordings have been systematically quantified and compared in human subjects. We found our hypothesis to be strongly supported by the results: the degree of surface abrasion was the only factor that could be correlated to significant differences in either the interfacial impedance or the SNR. Given these findings, we believe that abrasion holds the key to consistently obtaining a low-impedance contact interface and high-quality recordings and should thus be considered an essential component of proper skin preparation prior to attachment of electrodes for recording of small bioelectric surface potentials.

Ahmed-Nacer, Mehdi 05 May 2015 (has links)
To provide a high availability from any where, at any time, with low latency, data is optimistically replicated. This model allows any replica to apply updates locally, while the operations are later sent to all the others. In this way, all replicas eventually apply all updates, possibly even in different order. Optimistic replication algorithms are responsible for managing the concurrent modifications and ensure the consistency of the shared object. In this thesis, we present an evaluation methodology for optimistic replication algorithms. The context of our study is collaborative editing. We designed a tool that implements our methodology. This tool integrates a mechanism to generate a corpus and a simulator to simulate sessions of collaborative editing. Through this tool, we made several experiments on two different corpus: synchronous and asynchronous. In synchronous collaboration, we evaluate the performance of optimistic replication algorithms following several criteria such as execution time, memory occupation, message's size, etc. After analysis, some improvements were proposed. In addition, in asynchronous collaboration, when replicas synchronize their modifications, more conflicts can appear in the document. In this case, the system cannot merge the modifications until a user resolves them. In order to reduce the conflicts and the user's effort, we propose an evaluation metric and we evaluate the different algorithms on this metric. Afterward, we analyze the quality of the merge to understand the behavior of the users and the collaboration cases that create conflicts. Then, we propose algorithms for resolving the most important conflicts, therefore reducing the user's effort. Finally, we propose a new architecture for supporting cloud-based collaborative editing system. This architecture is based on two optimistic replication algorithms. Unlike current architectures, the proposed one removes the problems of the centralization and consensus between data centers, is simple and accessible for any developers

Nasr, Khalid 09 January 2014 (has links)
Wireless intrusion detection system (WIDS) has become a matter of increasing concern in recent years as a crucial element in wireless network security. WIDS monitors 802.11 traffic to identify the intrusive activities, and then alerts the complementary prevention part to combat the attacks. Selecting a reliable WIDS system necessitates inevitably taking into account a credible evaluation of WIDSs performance. WIDS effectiveness is considered the basic factor in evaluating the WIDS performance, thus it receives great attention in this thesis. Most previous experimental evaluations of intrusion detection systems (IDSs) were concerned with the wired IDSs, with an apparent lack of evaluating the wireless IDSs (WIDSs). In this thesis, we try to manipulate three main critiques of most pervious evaluations; lack of comprehensive evaluation methodology, holistic attack classification, and expressive evaluation metrics. In this thesis, we introduce a comprehensive evaluation methodology that covers all the essential dimensions for a credible evaluation of WIDSs performance. The main pivotal dimensions in our methodology are characterizing and generating the evaluation dataset, defining reliable and expressive evaluation metrics, and overcoming the evaluation limitations. Basically, evaluation dataset consists of two main parts; normal traffic (as a background) and malicious traffic. The background traffic, which comprises normal and benign activities in the absence of attacks, was generated in our experimental evaluation tests as real controlled traffic. The second and important part of the dataset is the malicious traffic which is composed of intrusive activities. Comprehensive and credible evaluation of WIDSs necessitates taking into account all possible attacks. While this is operationally impossible, it is necessary to select representative attack test cases that are extracted mainly from a comprehensive classification of wireless attacks. Dealing with this challenge, we have developed a holistic taxonomy of wireless security attacks from the perspective of the WIDS evaluator. The second pivotal dimension in our methodology is defining reliable evaluation metrics. We introduce a new evaluation metric EID (intrusion detection effectiveness) that manipulates the drawbacks of the previously proposed metrics, especially the common drawback of their main notion that leads to measuring a relative effectiveness. The notion of our developed metric EID helps in measuring the actual effectiveness. We also introduce another metric RR (attack recognition rate) to evaluate the ability of WIDS to recognize the attack type. The third important dimension in our methodology is overcoming the evaluation limitations. The great challenge that we have faced in the experimental evaluation of WIDSs is the uncontrolled traffic over the open wireless medium. This uncontrolled traffic affects the accuracy of the measurements. We overcame this problem by constructing an RF shielded testbed to take all the measurements under our control without any interfering from any adjacent stations. Finally, we followed our methodology and conducted experimental evaluation tests of two popular WIDSs (Kismet and AirSnare), and demonstrated the utility of our proposed solutions.

Bristot, Vilmar Menegon January 2012 (has links)
This thesis presents a set of initiatives that were developed in the area of educational management at a technical-vocational school, which is sponsored by a ceramic tile-shaping industry. These initiatives were based on the development and implementation of an educational model whose evaluation methodology based on the concepts of values (personal, relational, cognitive, and productive competencies and skills) differs from other schools. Thus, the research explores education at technical-vocational high school levels, the quality of industrial and educational management, and the profile of students who graduated with this new type of management. The validation of this educational model occurred from an environmental analysis in the institutions involved, based on a stage of perceptual data collecting and a second stage of visible data collection. Through this analysis, a qualitative increase of the people involved was observed, because this model showed an improvement in the socio-educational school community and especially, in the relationship not only between students and the school but mainly between students and the industry. It was also found that the differential of this new model of education management was to prepare the student, while still at school, for the challenges that they will face in the industrial sector, because this type of management has as main purpose the training of excellence in people.

Dias, Simone Carolina 28 March 2013 (has links)
Security is defined by some authors both as a synonym of certainty and as absence of risk and threats; security is, therefore, a representation of the world, an imaginary ideal. In order to understand the nature of the relations between public and private built environment and the representations of security, this essay presents a group of studies based on the literature from the disciplinary fields of architecture and urban planning and from interdisciplinary fields of security and technology. The gated community, an artifact and produce of urban design built upon concepts and prejudices about security has become the main object of inquiry. The first study, based on newspaper reports and news, made it possible to listen to the narratives of dwellers and of the press about gated communities and investigate how these logics interact with the representations of security and the technological artifacts in urban space. The chapter on representations of security in realtor internet advertisement pages for gated communities has allowed the study of the discourse and myths embedded within the sales pitch which influence prospective buyers. Public squares neighboring residential buildings were evaluated in a search for relationships between architectural characteristics of these public spaces and the actual occurrences of crimes; this has been achieved by means of regression and correlation studies. Users of these public squares were interviewed in regard to their ideas about security. The studies suggest that the theories about the relationship between the environment and the occurrence of crime are important tools for the planning of buildings, but they don't seem applicable at the scale of public urban spaces. The conclusions show that the logic of land use for public and private spaces shows different representations of security.

Utvärdering av Politiskt Bistånd : En fallstudie av ett politiskt biståndsprojekt i Laos / Evaluation of Political aid : A case study of a Political aid project in Laos

Fredriksson, Daniel January 2006 (has links)
The findings in this case study are mainly based on material collected during a field trip with a fellow student to Laos in February-March 2005, which was sponsored by Sida through a Minor Field Study scholarship. The original interest was to study a political aid project (Governance and Administrative Reform Project Luang Prabang, GPAR LP) in a country like Laos with very complex preconditions such as one-party polity. In Laos my interest in evaluation of political aid grew mainly because I found out that the two donors in the project, Sida and the UNDP, had reached different conclusions in their respective evaluations of the project. The main interest in this thesis has been to study how donors have evaluated a political aid project. The study shows that Sida and UNDP used, what in the literature usually is referred to as, Conventional evaluation as methodology when they conducted their evaluations of GPAR LP. The study also shows that the main reason for the different points of view that are expressed in the evaluations depend on a lack of dialogue and consensus, regarding for the project crucial concepts, rather than choice of evaluation methodology. This lack of mutual understanding between the agencies also has implications for the possibilities of the receiving part to create a better understanding and ownership of the project. If Sida and UNDP had chosen to do a mutual evaluation a lot could have been won in the form of time, money and less irritation between the involved parties. The study finally shows that a different choice of evaluation methodology, in this case Participatory evaluation, could have had some positive effects mostly due to its supposedly democratic methods which are in line with the goals of the GPAR LP- project. One example here is the use of studies of the political context which would have been useful in this case. Another example is that the methodology could be useful to create a better understanding and ownership of the project through its participatory methods.
