No. of bitstreams: 1 Adriano Henriques Machado.pdf: 2735275 bytes, checksum: 656ad4fe588d5d046ce0211399532d86 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2016-10-07 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This paper analyzes the political activities of Evangelicals, the "awakening" lived for them in strong effervescence period in the early 1960s, as well as their positions, disputes and tensions across the civil-military coup of 1964 and before the authoritarian regime to the year 1976, with special attention to the conservative offensive in this context emerged as a reaction to engagement proposals and political participation of churches in "Brazilian reality". The study focuses its analysis on the trajectory of two evangelical groups: the Methodist Church of Brazil (IMB) and the Baptists linked to the Brazilian Baptist Convention (CBB); having as main source journals produced by these names, in particular its two official bodies, respectively Expositor Cristão (EC) and O Jornal Batista (OJB). In order to broaden the understanding of their positions forward to change processes, continuities and ruptures occurred in the sociopolitical sphere, built on the dynamics of tensions and infighting of the two denominations, the relationship between them and the other evangelical groups, was used also the following publications: 1) the magazines produced by the youth of these churches, the Cruz de Malta (CM) and the Juventude Batista (JB); 2) periodic connected to the ecumenical movement groups, especially Boletim Ecumenical Information Centre (CEI) and Cristianismo newspaper; 3) other than those arising in the period after the coup, as Brasil Batista and Cristianismo Hoje. In consultation with the internal documentation of Churches, the Convention its Proceedings, conferences and congresses have also helped to discuss and understand the dynamics of political and ecclesiastical life of these institutions. The thesis is organized around two parts: the first, which includes the early 1960s and has as focus of analysis the growth process of the sectors that defended the "awakening" of the evangelical for participation in socio-political issues, including the how they were articulated and established relationships with other groups and on the proposals and ideologies that were on the political agenda of that period; and a second, which examines how evangelicals positioned themselves before the military regime, with a view to re-articulation of forces occurred in this segment, which made the reactionary-conservative groups, favored by authoritarian climate of the time, initiate an offensive for control political ideology of produced periodicals, as well as the spaces and internal structures of these institutions / O presente trabalho analisa a atuação política dos evangélicos, o “despertamento” vivido por eles no período de forte efervescência no início dos anos 1960, bem como seus posicionamentos, disputas e tensões frente ao golpe civil-militar de 1964 e diante do regime autoritário até o ano de 1976, com especial atenção à ofensiva conservadora emergida nesse contexto como reação às propostas de engajamento e participação política das Igrejas na “realidade brasileira”.

Evangelical ecclesiology and liturgical reform in the Edwardian Reformation, c. 1545-1555

Tong, Stephen January 2019 (has links)
This thesis offers an assessment of the Edwardian Reformation and its significance for the wider development of English Protestantism by examining the liturgical reforms of the period. The central question that this thesis grapples with is, how did Edwardian reformers apply their theological concept of the 'church' as an invisible spiritual body of believers to the task of reforming the visible temporal institution of Tudor England? The overarching argument of this study is that, in the eyes of the reformers, the formal liturgy of the Church of England, as defined by the Prayer Book, formed a nexus between the temporal and spiritual realms so that the invisible Church was given visible expression in public worship. This meant that Tudor men and women could actively participate in the spiritual communion of saints through the tangible experience of church services, especially through the sacraments and by observing the Sabbath. The examination of the relationship of mid-Tudor evangelical ecclesiology and liturgical reform presented in this thesis allows us to understand the Edwardian Church on its own terms. It challenges some long-held assumptions about the figures and events of the period, and their combined effect on later developments in English Protestantism, which continue to colour historiography. By taking a fresh approach to seemingly well-known texts, such as the Book of Common Prayer, this thesis argues that the relationship of ecclesiology and liturgical reform was a central feature of the Edwardian Reformation, an aspect of the period that has not been widely acknowledged in recent scholarship. A different ecclesiological theme is investigated through the lens of liturgical reform in each chapter to show how significant the doctrine of the church was to mid-Tudor reformers' goals in terms of ecclesiastical structure and practical ministry.

An Analysis of the Message of Pre-marital Sexual Abstinence as a Strategy for HIV Prevention and its Implications for Development: A case study of the Christian Action Fellowship

Seohatse, Lerato 23 February 2007 (has links)
Student Number: 9408497V Faculty of Humanities, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree for Masters of Arts. / In this research report an analysis of the message of pre-marital sexual abstinence as a strategy for HIV prevention and its implications for development was carried out. The Christian Action Fellowship, a student Christian organization at the University of the Witwatersrand provided a case for the research study. The alternative development paradigm informed my discussion of the message of pre-marital sexual abstinence in relation to development. In particular, it is its emphasis on participatory development and on the fact that development focus should be given to particular localities that I drew from the paradigm. However, the paradigm falls short of capturing the religious dynamics pertaining to local realities. Thus the results of the research study I carried out are meant to contribute to the development of the paradigm by factoring in the religious dimension of local reality in discourse of development. In this study, the religious dimension of local reality was captured in my focus on the message of pre-marital sexual abstinence as advanced within the evangelical faith based movement in South Africa. Furthermore, this research study is meant to contribute to discourse of development by stimulating intellectual reflection on the message of pre-marital sexual abstinence as a strategy of prevention and its implications for development in South Africa. The study demonstrated involvement by the evangelical movement in the fight against the HIV/AIDS pandemic. The study further demonstrated the existence of particular methods employed to advance the message of pre-marital sexual abstinence as a prevention strategy against the HIV/AIDS pandemic. One such method is the strategy of identification. This method is employed to appeal to the targeted audience when ii presenting a case. Other methods employed are debate and argumentation as well as rhetoric. The deployment of these methods point to a religious construction of an identity that upholds pre-marital sexual abstinence as a lifestyle and a better HIV preventive option to other strategies of prevention. This research study is recommending further work in the areas where HIV prevention interventions and development interventions intersect within the local context (in all its dimensions) of identity construction.

Exploring Gender Roles and Gender Equality within the Evangelical Church

Bishop, Christopher 18 May 2019 (has links)
This research aims to facilitate better understanding of perceptions of gender roles and gender equality among members of the Evangelical Church and to determine whether these perceptions differ by gender. The evangelical community’s ideologies and values have come to shape social and political dialogues within the United States. A key component of the faith is understanding the role each member plays within his or her family unit and community at large. The evangelical faith’s organizational structure and ideologies are informed by a patriarchal model that’s placed women at internal and structural odds, based on research exploring evangelically informed organizations. However, there is a gap in literature related to gender roles and equality within the faith, and how these perceptions may differ by gender and the influence a church’s organizational structure may have on these perceptions. This process involved the examination of perceptions of gender among evangelical Christians in a nationally representative sample. These findings informed a series of questions designed to explore, at greater depth on a regional level, the views of evangelicals regarding gender roles and gender equality within their organizations. The study provided a multidimensional construct of how the evangelical community defines themselves, understands gender roles and gender equality, and how these definitions affirm and conflict with definitions outside of the church as well as their own church’s leadership and organizational structure.

Postoje členů ČCE k aktuálním společensko-morálním otázkám / Attitudes of the ECCB members towards current social moral issues

Lavický, Jan January 2017 (has links)
In my diploma thesis, I deal with five socio-moral topics and with the attitudes of members of The Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren (ECCB) towards them. These topics are: 1) Marriage and family 2) Homosexuality 3) Ethnical minorities 4) Dispute over the legacy of communism 5) Refugees and immigrants. First part of the thesis is dedicated to the official statements of the synod and the Synodal Council. Furthermore, this chapter reveals the process leading to adopting these positions. This rather descriptive part is followed by a sociological survey of opinions on the issues, mentioned above, held by members of ECCB. The aim of the survey is to figure out, whether these opinions are in agreement with the official statements. The final chapter is dedicated to data evaluation. The main goal of my diploma thesis is to find out what issues are for ECCB members easy to agree on and in which cases are the opinions rather individualized. Towards an understanding of the effect of revival evidenced in the writings of George Whitefield and Jonathan Edwards

Jull, David, n/a January 2006 (has links)
This thesis examines the revivalist writings of Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758) and George Whitefield (1714-1770) for evidence that the Great Awakening altered their perspective on revival. It is principally based on primary sources written between 1736 and 1743. Six separate chapters explore their background, their understanding of revival, their efforts at propagating it, their techniques in managing the revival, their defense of revival, and their institutionalization of revival. Both their understandings of revival came from their own observations of the revivals that accompanied their evangelistic efforts. Their theological background, heavily influenced by Calvin, insisted that God was responsible for both conversions and revival. The thesis notes that Whitefields and Edwards use of four primary techniques to propagate revival evolved as they experienced revival. Their preaching, their organization of small, religious education groups, their publishing of sermons, and their written narratives of revival all show signs of adaptation to changing circumstances. Both managed revival by using small groups and publications to guide people way from inappropriate spiritual expressions. These groups and documents also provided opportunities to educate new converts about their spiritual experiences. Edwards and Whitefield had the opportunity to clarify their understanding of revival as they defended the revival against those critics who questioned their claims about Gods role in the religious events of 1735-1743. Both institutionalized revival by interacting with the next generation of evangelical ministers and by making available their doctrines and their own experiences in their published narratives. This propensity to publish their reflections on revival allowed future generations access to their revival principles. The overriding hypothesis of this study is that Whitefields and Edwards understanding of revival grew out of their involvement in revival in the eighteenth century religious revivals of colonial North America and that their revival writings and preaching were attempts to codify and transfer the lessons they had learned about revival to future generations of Christians who might, they hoped, themselves experience a God-ordained time of revival. The key conclusions of this study are that 1) Whitefields and Edwards positions on revival issues developed through repeated exposures to revival, 2) Whitefield and Edwards used similar means to propagate, manage, defend, and institutionalize revival, 3) Whitefields sermons and journals themselves express a clear and concise theology, 4) a comparison of Whitefields and Edwards theology refutes the suggestion that the lack of a uniform theology throughout the colonies negates the reality of the Great Awakening, 5) a careful study of Whitefields and Edwards revival writings produces a heightened awareness of the nature of their narrative works, 6) Edwards revival writings show a concern for worship that is too often missed in studies of his work, 7) Edwards and Whitefield were actively involved in developing, recording, and teaching the principles of authentic revival.
