A Hindcast Comparing the Response of the Souhegan River to Dam Removal with the Simulations of the Dam Removal Express Assessment Model-1

Conlon, Maricate January 2013 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Noah P. Snyder / Dam removal is a widely used river restoration technique. Historically, dams produced hydropower, controlled flooding, and provided water storage, but currently many dams in the United States, specifically low head dams in New England, are obsolete. This study aims to assess the ability of a simple morphodynamic sediment transport model, Dam Removal Express Assessment Model (DREAM-1), developed by Cui et al. (2006a). I compare simulations to a dam removal monitoring project that quantified the physical response of the Souhegan River to the removal of the Merrimack Village Dam (MVD), Merrimack, NH. Pearson et al. (2011) reported results of field monitoring from August 2007-May 2010 and found that the Souhegan River responded to dam removal in two phases: initial rapid incision of impoundment sediment induced by immediate base level drop of 3.9 m (~50% of impounded sediment eroded in ~2 months), followed by an event-driven phase in which impoundment sediment eroded primarily during floods. The reach downstream of the dam showed a similar two-phase response, with rapid deposition in the first three weeks after dam removal followed by bed degradation to the pre-removal elevation profile within a year. I have continued the field methods of Pearson et al. (2011) for the past two survey periods, June 2011 and July 2012. Using five years of comprehensive field data, I conduct a hindcast to compare the sediment erosion and deposition patterns predicted by DREAM-1 to the observed downstream response of the Souhegan River. I model the changes in bed elevation for the downstream and upstream channel reaches at intervals that correspond with the dates of four longitudinal profile surveys and seven annual cross-section surveys. Results of the hindcast show that DREAM-1 predicts channel elevation accurately within one meter and with average discrepancy of ±0.35 m when compared to average channel bed elevations of each cross-section. DREAM-1 successfully simulates two phases of upstream channel response, rapid impoundment erosion followed by a longer period of gradual sedimentation change. However, DREAM-1 erodes to base elevation within 11 weeks after dam removal (erosion of the 88% impoundment sand), leaving little sand for transport during the later survey periods. This overestimation of impoundment erosion is likely the product of limitations of the model, specifically the simplification of channel cross-sections with constant width throughout the simulation. The model assumes uniform lateral sediment transport in the impoundment and does not capture the variation in width due to incision and channel widening. This hinders the ability of the model to simulate some details of the sediment budget developed by Pearson et al. (2011) and extended with recent surveys. / Thesis (MS) — Boston College, 2013. / Submitted to: Boston College. Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. / Discipline: Earth and Environmental Sciences.

Thus, a longitudinal study was carried out, with 457 children between six and seven years old followed for two years. This longitudinal study resulted in two empirical studies. The first study aimed to investigate the impact of callous-unemotional traits (CU) in the emotional faces recognition using brief stimuli duration. The results showed that children with CU had higher rates of conduct problems and deficits in the recognition of fear in T2 and sadness in T1 and T2. The deficits were more accentuated with shorter stimulus duration. Moreover, CU group were the only one not to show improvement in the accuracy of these emotions during the follow-up. The second study aimed to investigate the association between callous-unemotional traits and cognitive empathy as predictors of the severity of conduct problems throughout development. It was identified that children with CU presented impairment in cognitive empathy. Furthermore, a hierarchical regression shows that cognitive empathy was a predictor of more severe behavioral problems throughout development. The results of this study may contribute to the development of an early intervention focused on the emotional recognition training, aiming for greater effectiveness than the current treatment protocols focused on the behavioral consequences, currently ineffective for CU traits.

Delivery planning under uncertainty in logistics and express industry. / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collection

January 2007 (has links)
In this dissertation, we aim to investigate some delivery planning problems under different aspects of uncertain conditions in order to present some insights on how to develop more efficient and effective logistics solutions in the challenging, dynamic and competitive industry of express delivery nowadays. / Lastly, we introduce a travel time estimation method which can be considered as an upstream extension on the first delivery planning problem or any routing problems that require travel time in a road network as an input parameter. We realize that different trips may traverse on some links that are transited by other trips as well; and therefore linear and quadratic programming models can be developed to infer the travel time of any road segments which are traversed by more than one trip from the consideration of the common road segments of various trips. Bus routes information is proposed as the data source because of their coverage on the road network and their data available. Robustness of the proposed models is evaluated according to the deviation between the resultant inferences and the means of the segment travel times. It is found that the basic models suffer from a fundamental problem of underspecification issue if the number of observed trips (i.e. constraints) is fewer than the number of road segments (i.e. variables) to be estimated. Therefore, two additional types of constraints are introduced to address these issues. / The focus of the second delivery planning problem addressed in this dissertation is switched to the randomness of the demands at the delivery locations. We consider a single-depot problem in which a large volume of packages have to be delivered in a dense and small area with a lot of high-rise buildings within an extremely tight delivery commitment time window. At each vertex, the package volume (i.e. demand) is a highly stochastic variable and its service time is also dependent on the demand. This version of problem is typically faced by express service providers which offer premium express services to customers that are protected by the money back guarantee (MBG) condition. We name this version of problem as a time-constrained vehicle routing problem with stochastic demands and service times (SVRP-D). Since both the demand and service time of a vertex are stochastic, the vehicle capacity and the commitment-time (i.e. deadline) constraints may not be satisfied after the demands are realized, and recourse action is thus necessary to "rescue" the "infeasible" delivery plan through additional effort and cost. Three typical recourse actions are independently considered: (1) restocking; (2) outsourcing; and (3) reassignment. A two-stage stochastic integer programming is proposed such that the first-stage problem is to determine a set of a priori routes which minimize the vehicle travel cost and the cost for any known recourse actions. Dependent on a first-stage solution, the second-stage problem is to decide the optimal recourse plan with least cost according to the pre-determined recourse action. / Two delivery planning problems and one travel time estimation model under various aspects of randomness are addressed in this dissertation. The first delivery planning problem considers an extension on a well-known problem---the vehicle routing problem with time windows (VRPTW), where the travel time required between each delivery location is a stochastic variable, instead of a fixed value. We name this version of the VRPTW as a vehicle routing problem with time windows and stochastic travel times (VRPTWST). A two-stage stochastic integer programming with recourse model is developed and its objective is to minimize the vehicle travel cost together with the expected loss due to the violation of the delivery time windows. An exact branch-and-cut (B&C) algorithm is proposed. This algorithm is effective for small-size problems, e.g. instances with only 8 vertices. For larger-size problems, some modifications on the B&C algorithm are suggested to improve the solution time with only a small deviation from optimality. / Wong Chi Fat. / "May 2007." / Adviser: Janny Leung. / Source: Dissertation Abstracts International, Volume: 69-01, Section: B, page: 0596. / Thesis (Ph.D.)--Chinese University of Hong Kong, 2007. / Includes bibliographical references (p. 256-270). / Electronic reproduction. First of all, it was established how serious is the threat posed by these laws to this fundamental freedom, conclusion which inspired its study in the American constitutional system, where the First Amendment has a large "breathing space". Still, by analyzing the First Amendment doctrines, the study of criminal defamation, particularly at state level, and by understanding the actual malice standard, it was discovered that the truth and the right to critique are protected by freedom of expression and awarded by the exchange of ideas in a democracy. Finally, it was found that truth and justification form the core of this fundamental right in Brazil on grounds similar to American law, ensuring the debate in society, protecting it from possible criminal actions filed by public officials, public figures or even individuals involved in matters of public interest which have as their goal to deter criticism and censor the truth / O presente trabalho visa a readequar o direito penal brasileiro, principalmente os crimes contra a honra, a uma compreens?o contempor?nea de liberdade de express?o.

However, there are still gaps concerning research with adolescents. As this developmental stage is marked by interpersonal relations, and as these are related to a better quality of life, this dissertation aimed to fulfill some of the gaps in the topic. Two studies were conducted. Study I aimed to fill the gap concerning the absence of an image database containing facial stimuli representing the six basic emotion expressions encompassing the entire period of adolescence and its transition to the beginning of adulthood. To this end, posed and spontaneous expressions of 31 teenagers and young adult from 12-20 years (14 men, Mage = 17.4, SD = 2.7) were collected with the use of three strategies: emotive scenarios, posed expressions, and reactions to visual stimuli. Two thousand two hundred and seventy nine frames were captured. Expert judges (N = 3) filtered the frames, thus leading to a total of 42 final frames (three for each basic emotion, and three depicting neutral faces, equally divided between genders). These images were standardized and after passing through a new panel of expert judges (N = 4), they have been validated, thus composing the Youth Emotion Picture Set (YEPS). Since there is a lack of studies that directly investigate the role of covariates in recognizing expressions, Study II aimed to investigate the role the verbal IQ, pubertal development, and socialization in the accuracy of recognition of expressions among adolescents. Participants were 90 adolescents and young adults (44 males, Mage = 16.7, SD = 2.4) divided into four age groups: 12-14 (n = 23), 15-16 (n = 19), 17-18 (n = 24), and 19-20 years (n = 25). They were assessed with regard to verbal IQ, number of friends, weekly interactions with friends, and level of pubertal development. After that, they completed an experimental task in which they had to categorize the emotion displayed in three different presentation speeds (200ms, 500ms, 1000ms). The facial stimuli used were collected from the YEPS. Findings showed that number of interactions with friends per week was inversely related to accuracy in recognizing anger and disgust. Verbal IQ was significantly proportional to the accuracy of surprise, disgust, and anger. Pubertal development was related to the recognition of expressions of happiness. This dissertation resulted in the development of the YEPS, an instrument that can be used in studies exploring emotions in adolescents or for clinical application purposes. Study II revealed that different covariates influenced the recognition of emotion expressions. The covariates predicted differently accuracy in emotion recognition, with none of them explaining it for all emotions under investigation. Participaram do estudo 90 adolescentes e jovens adultos (44 do sexo masculino, Midade = 16,7, DP = 2,4) divididos em quatro grupos et?rios: 12-14 (n = 23), 15-16 (n = 19), 17-18 (n = 24) e 19-20 anos (n = 25).

Araujo, Angélica da Silva 31 May 2016 (has links)
Dada a complexidade desse fenômeno, são necessários estudos ampliados que abordem características tanto dos famil iares quanto dos pacientes e do ambiente, em diversos momentos, tais como na internação, após a alta e ao longo dos tratamentos extra hospitalares / Emotion Express (EE) is a concept referring to the quality of family relationships and can be considered as a stroke or as a state of the interactions, characterized by three dimensions: critical comments (CC), hostility and emotional overinvolvement (EOI). Objectives: to evaluate and describe the EE level among caregivers of people with mental disorders and their association with sociodemographic variables, early stress symptoms stress, lifestyle and mental suffering. Method: study of quantitative epidemiological approach, cross-sectional and correlational character. Descriptive statistical analysis was followed (calculation of frequencies, means and standard deviations of the responses of caregivers instruments), bivariate (to verify the association between variables, using the chi -square tests of Pearson, Fisher exact and Mann Whitney) and logistic regression using SPSS version 22.0. The significance level was 5% (alpha <= 0.05). All ethical issues have been met. Results: most of the carers of people with mental disorders in early hospitalization was evaluated with high levels of EE (both globally and in the CC and EOI domains), with the presence of early stress, with the presence of stress symptoms and the presence of suffering mental. As for the lifestyle, most were evaluated with style good or very good life. EE in the EOI domain showed a statistically significant association with the variables frequent medicines use, early stress, stress phase and mental suffering. They were identified as EE for high protection factors in the CC domain elementary school and family income. In contrast, age was a risk factor for high EE in the CC domain. As for high EE in the EOI domain, early stress and mental suffering were risk factors. Conclus ions : this study evaluates important aspects that can influence the quality of the relationship between caregiver and person with mental disorder. Expressed Emotion, early stress, stress symptoms and mental suffering stand out as phenomena relevant to the planning of care for family caregivers of people with mental disorders. Given the complexity of this phenomenon, we need expanded studies that address characteristics of both relatives and patients and the environment, at various times, such as in hospital after discharge and over the extra hospital treatment
