Previous issue date: 2012-02-27 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / This study investigates the processes through which poetic narratives are
constructed in documentary cinema and their results. In order to do so, the question
of the audiovisual poetry that is formed through images, sounds, and words will be
analyzed. In its turn, this analysis will serve as the basis of the proposition of this study,
the creation of poetic languages, and the mapping of new discernible frontiers of
communication and perception in the context of the production of documentary
cinema. Three documentaries by the German filmmaker Werner Herzog are analyzed
Fata Morgana (1971), Lessons of darkness (1992), and The wild blue yonder (2005)
which, in the context of this dissertation, constitute a poetic trilogy. Based on these
works and documental material on the director, this project aims to elucidate Herzog s
creative processes and their transformations in each phase of realization of those
films, from the choices in conceptual approach to the editing, by comparatively
analyzing the way text, image, and sound are worked together. To this end, the study
of these three works is founded in two moments: the realization (technical analysis)
and the result (analysis of the poetic or artistic language). This methodology satisfies
technical criteria as much as it does sensibility criteria, and when combined with
Gaston Bachelard s, Arlindo Machado s, and Gilles Deleuze s concepts of image, this
study reveals the processes of audiovisual language creation in documentary cinema
that transcend the limits of the genre / Este estudo investiga os processos de construção de narrativas poéticas em cinema
Três documentários do
análise adotada atende a critérios técnicos sensíveis. A fundamentação teórica engloba
Gaston Bachelard, Arlindo Machado e Gilles Deleuze, com o objetivo de revelar os
processos de criação de linguagem audiovisual em cinema documentário que
transcende os limites do gênero

The good and the bad: UCAV counterinsurgency : how are the UCAV theories reflected in the counterinsurgency in Afghanistan and Pakistan?Asplund Thidlund, Peter January 2016 (has links)
The modern battlefield is a changing environment where new ideas and technology are being tried and implemented. One such technology that has brought recent changes to the battlefield is the Unmanned Aerial Combat Vehicles (UCAV), commonly (and often incorrectly) referred to as “drones”. UCAV can be considered the new weapon of choice to deal with irregular opponents or terrorist organisations, such as those in Afghanistan and Pakistan. However, the use of UCAV is not without contradictory elements and leads to debate. It is within this debate that this study takes foothold. This study will be analysing the debate and issues surrounding this by evaluating four contrasting variables, measuring impact through different means and aiming to increase the understanding of UACV in the field. There are several crossovers in the analysis of all four variables citing the strengths and weaknesses of UCAV provisions in conflict. The analysis, however, conclude that a sole, holistic use of UCAV strikes would not resort in a termination of threats, such as the Taliban or Al-Qaida. This means that both the positive and the negative aspects of UCAV are seen in the conflict and do not contradict one another. Regretfully, this implicates that even if the Taliban and Al-Qaida becomes less effective due to the UCAV strikes, they will not perish.

La Fata Turchina : - Una Bildung per le donne? / Pinocchios blåa Fé : - En analys av kvinnorollen i 1800-talets italienska barnlitteratur och BildungsromanSjöberg Mantelli, Esther Rebecka January 2021 (has links)
This study focuses on the role of the blue-haired Fairy in Carlo Collodi's "Le Avventure di Pinocchio" compared to the feminine role in Italian Children's literature and the European genre Bildungsroman during the late 18th century. It also explores Italy's educational and ideological agenda during this period and the role of children's literature as a pedagogical contribution towards the formation of a new Italian nation after 1861. Having thoroughly considered Carlo Colloid’s criticism towards traditional family, school organization, and children's literature, the conclusion demonstrates that the blue-haired Fairy can be interpreted as an anti-conformist figure in comparison to the educational values of 18th century Italy and that she is in contrast to the stereotypical descriptions of women in literature during this period, both as an educator and as an independent woman.

The Durand Line South Asia's new trouble spot / South Asia's new trouble spotMahmood, Tariq 06 1900 (has links)
The Durand Line, the western border between Pakistan and Afghanistan, was delineated in 1893 as the boundary between then British India and Afghanistan. The international community recognizes the Durand line as the Pak-Afghan border since the creation of Pakistan in 1947, but successive Afghan rulers have repudiated its legitimacy. This dispute has caused turbulence in relations between these countries and instigates greater problems with regard to the Pashtun nationalism. The Durand Line has remained porous due to the nature of tribal cultures and the socio-economic compulsions of the people living along the Durand line. The Durand Line was exploited to launch the Afghan Jihad against the Soviets in the 1980s. The GWOT in Afghanistan has once again brought misperceptions regarding alignment, and the porous nature of the Durand Line to the lime light. This thesis demonstrates that existing combat operations against Al-Qaeda and the Taliban and the exploitation of the Durand Line by the U.S.-led coalition forces, had a destabilizing effect on Pakistan, due to the autonomous nature of tribal areas and Pakistan's necessity to extend its authority in tribal areas while supporting the GWOT. This thesis recommends that a clear understanding of the Durand Line as an international border by all concerned states will enhance the coordination of operations at all tiers, and thereby prevent this border from becoming South Asia's next trouble spot.

Female identity in the post-millennial Nigerian novel: a study of Adichie, Atta, and UnigweWambui, Mary Theru January 2015 (has links)
This thesis project examines the work of three female Nigerian authors: Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Sefi Atta and Chika Unigwe. They are part of a growing number of young African writers who are receiving international acclaim and challenging narratives that have long defined the continent in pejorative terms. They question what it means to be female and African in a transcultural, global world but counter discourses that are both restrictive and prescriptive. Their female characters are not imaged in binary terms as either victims or villains. For all three writers, the African story has to be told in its entirety incorporating what some may argue are negative stereotypes but doing so in a manner that examines and undermines those same stereotypes. For the purposes of the thesis, I focus on their first novels: Adichie’s Purple Hibiscus, Atta’s Everything Good Will Come and Unigwe’s On Black Sisters’ Street. Chapter One examines Purple Hibiscus and argues that the novel is much more than a coming of age story or, as some critics have posited, an allegory of the postcolonial state. Chapter Two highlights Atta’s use of fairly familiar feminist theories but grounds them in the lived realities of the African city. All three authors are concerned with issues of violence and death. Unigwe’s novel, which forms the focus of Chapter Three, offers a critical perspective on how both of those themes intersect with the increasing commercialisation of global culture. Her characters are female sex workers whose lives are irrevocably altered by the murder of one of their colleagues. I conclude by arguing that the three novels offer a nuanced if not necessarily new understanding of the various social, economic and political forces that continue to shape the lives of women on the continent.
