Le but de ce mémoire n'est pas de faire une présentation exhaustive de toutes mes activités de recherche mais d'essayer de cibler celles qui à la fois me correspondent le mieux, celles qui me tiennent le plus à cœur, parmi les activités de recherche que j'ai menées depuis que je suis partie de Potsdam (thèse). Je présenterai donc dans une première partie une synthèse de mes travaux sur les effets de l'irradiation, liée à la radioactivité, intra-ou inter-minéraux, naturelle ou artificielle. Je donnerai ensuite des exemples d'études ciblées sur des processus (diffusion, altération) dont la cinétique peut être considérablement accrues par les effets de la radioactivité. Dans une troisième partie je détaillerai un exemple particulier d'effet d'irradiation, celle induite par un faisceau laser femtoseconde et je terminerai sur des perspectives à plus ou moins long terme, ciblées sur les interactions entre les minéraux radioactifs (ou minéraux irradiés) et les fluides et les conséquences sur le signal géochronologique.

Réseaux bidimensionnels d'agrégats magnétiques préformés en phase gazeuse

Ce travail de thèse porte sur l'organisation de nanoparticules sur des surfaces grâce à une approche originale basée sur le dépôt à faible énergie d'agrégats, préformés en phase gazeuse (approche Bottom-up), sur substrats de graphite HOPG, fonctionnalisés par des réseaux 2D de défauts créés par faisceau d'ions focalisés nano-FIB (approche Top-down). L'obtention de réseaux 2D d'amas d'agrégats est conditionnée par la diffusion des agrégats déposés et leur sensibilité aux défauts artificiels FIB. Le développement de cette approche passe tout d'abord par des simulations Monte-Carlo réalisées dans le cadre du modèle DDA (Dépôt-Diffusion-Agrégation). Ensuite, sa faisabilité expérimentale est testée avec succès en déposant des agrégats d'or. En particulier, cette étude montre la dépendance des propriétés morphologiques et structurales des défauts FIB en fonction de la dose d'ions. Par ailleurs, la sensibilité des agrégats aux défauts FIB, ainsi que la possibilité de contrôler la taille des amas, la période du réseau et sa géométrie sont analysées. Enfin, en se plaçant dans les conditions optimales permettant la meilleure organisation, notre approche est étendue aux agrégats magnétiques Co50Pt50, candidats potentiels au stockage d'information à ultra-haute densité. Une étude de l'influence du recuit sur les réseaux d'agrégats Co50Pt50 montre une amélioration de la qualité de l'organisation, et surtout une transition de phase des agrégats de la structure<br />A1 vers la structure L10.

Throughout the development of a determined science, paradigms can change by changing the methods, objective and standards of research. Fisheries science is changing the paradigm moving from the paradigm of maximization in the use of resources, quantified by the index of the catch, which was influenced by evolutionary concepts such as Optimal Foraging Theory, to the sustainability paradigm that seeks its foundation in the fishery ecosystem perspective. The goal of this study was to review methods, theory and the history of ecosystem indexes of fishery science that attempts to determine sustainability of fishery resources from the data capture. Ecosystems indexes by themselves may not be useful to measure the sustainability of fishing because they focus only on the environmental or ecological side of the sustainability tripod. Probably to measure the sustainability of fishing these indexes should include in the future the Payments for Ecosystem Services and Social Resilience. Stress corrosion cracking and internal oxidation of alloy 600 in high temperature hydrogenated steam and water

In this study, the possibility of using low pressure hydrogenated steam to simulate primary water reactor conditions is examined. The oxides formed on Alloy 600 (WF675) between 350 Celsius and 500 Celsius in low pressure hydrogenated steam (with a ratio of oxygen at the Ni/NiO to oxygen in the system of 20) have been characterised using analytical electron microscopy (AEM) and compared to oxide that formed in a high pressure water in a autoclave at 350 Celsius with 30 cc/kg of hydrogen. Preferential oxidation of grain boundaries and bulk internal oxidation were observed on samples prepared by oxide polishing suspension (OPS). Conversely, samples mechanically ground to 600 grit produced a continuous, protective oxide film which suppressed the preferential and internal oxidation. The surface preparation changed the form of the oxides in both steam and autoclave tests. The preferential oxidation rate has been determined to be K_{oxide} = Aexp{-Q/RT}with A = 2.27×10^(−3) m^(2)s^(−1) and Q = 221 kJ.mol^(−1) (activation energy) for WF675 and A = 5.04 × 10^(−7) m^(2)s^(−1) and Q = 171 kJ.mol^(−1) for 15% cold worked WF675. These values are consistent with the activation energy of primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC) initiation. Bulk oxygen diffusivities were calculated from the internal oxidation after 500 h exposures. At 500 Celsius the oxygen diffusivity was determined to be 1.79×10^(−20) m^(2)s^(−1) for WF675 and 1.21×10^(−20) m^(2)s^(−1) for 15% cold worked WF675, the oxygen diffusivity at 400 Celsius in 15% cold worked WF675 was calculated to be 1.49×10^(−22) m^(2)s^(−1).The Cr-depletion associated with preferential oxidation has been assessed by AEM. The Cr-depletion was asymmetric and it could not be accounted for by local variations in the diffusion rate. Chemically induced grain boundary migration is suggested as a possible explanation. Constant load SCC tests conducted in hydrogenated steam at 400 Celsius have shown a similar trend to the classical dependency of PWSCC as a function of potential. The SCC samples were also prepared with two surface finishes, OPS and 600 grit. In all SCC tests, significantly more cracking was observed on the OPS surface and all failures initiated from this surface.

Nowadays, the systems that allow simultaneous employment of both focused electron and ion beams are very important tools in the field of micro- and nanotechnology. In addition to imaging and analysis, they can be used for lithography, which is applied for preparation of structures with required shapes and dimensions at the micrometer and nanometer scale. The first part of the thesis deals with one lithographic method – focused electron or ion beam induced deposition, for which a suitable adjustment of exposition parameters is searched and quality of deposited metal structures in terms of shape and elemental composition studied. Subsequently, attention is paid also to other types of lithographic methods (electron or ion beam lithography), which are applied in preparation of etching masks for the subsequent selective wet etching of silicon single crystals. In addition to optimization of mentioned techniques, the application of etched silicon surfaces for, e.g., selective growth of metal structures has been studied. The last part of the thesis is focused on functional properties of selected 2D or 3D structures.

Eine ortsauflösende Spannungs- und Dehnungssensortechnik soll durch die Nutzung magnetostriktiver Materialien auf der Oberfläche von Kohlenstoffeinzelfasern (C-Fasern) und Mikrofeinstrukturierung dieser Schichten erzeugt und zur elektronischen Überwachung des Belastungszustandes von sicherheits- oder servicerelevanten Faserverbundbauteilen eingesetzt werden. Eine auf lokaler Gasphasenabscheidung und Mikrostrukturierung mittels der Focused Ion Beam (FIB)-Technik beruhende Sensorfabrikationsmethode wurde gemeinsam mit dem Institut für Mikrotechnologie Hannover (imt) entwickelt. Mehrschichtig mittels CVD und PVD bedampfte und zusätzlich galvanisch beschichtete C-Fasern weisen neuartige Eigenschaften auf, die im vorgestellten Vorhaben am Lehrstuhl für Verbundwerkstoffe (LVW) charakterisiert wurden. Insbesondere die Untersuchung der verschiedenen Schichten sowie deren Interfaces nehmen eine bedeutende Rolle ein.

An Innovative Fabrication Route to Machining Micro-Tensile Specimens Using Plasma-Focused Ion Beam and Femtosecond Laser Ablation and Investigation of the Size Effect Phenomenon Through Mechanical Testing of Fabricated Single Crystal Copper Micro-Tensile Specimens

This project is in collaboration with the Hydro-Quebec Research Institute (IREQ) and the Canadian Centre for Electron Microscopy (CCEM) on the mechanical test performance of miniature-scale micro-tensile specimens. The objective of the thesis project is to create an efficient and reliable fabrication route for producing micro-tensile specimens and to validate the accuracy of a newly custom-built micro-tensile bench at IREQ. The fabrication techniques developed and outlined in this thesis use the underlying fundamental physical mechanisms of secondary electron microscopy (SEM), focused-ion beam (FIB), and the femtosecond (fs)-laser machining for producing optimal quality micro-tensile specimens. The mechanical testing of the specimens is geared towards studying the localized deformation occurring in the microstructure when the size of the specimen only limits a number of grains and grain boundaries in order to target the specific detailed measurement of the mechanical behaviour of individual grains and interfaces. The goal for creating an optimal fabrication route for micro-tensile specimens is to carry out micro-mechanical testing of the primary turbine steels of 415 martensitic stainless steel used in the manufacture of Francis turbine components at Hydro-Quebec. The mechanical testing of single phase and interphase interface 415 steel micro-tensile specimens are considered building blocks to developing digital twin models of the steel microstructure. The experimental data from the mechanical tests would be fed into the crystal plasticity finite element models (CPFEM) that are currently being developed by researchers at IREQ. With the development of digital twin models, engineers at IREQ would be able to predict crack initiation at the microstructure level (prior to crack propagation into macro-scale cracks) by observing the evolution of the grain’s crystallographic orientation and morphology, as well as deformation mechanisms such as martensite formation and twinning produced from localized induced strains in the microstructure. In addition, self-organized dislocation processes such as dislocation nucleation and dislocation escape through the free surface can also be studied using the CPFEM models for size-limited mechanical deformation behaviour of miniature-scale mechanical test specimens. The fabrication routes studied in this thesis project use the combination of the fs-laser and plasma focused ion beam (PFIB) to machine the micro-tensile specimens. (100) single crystal copper was the ideal material chosen to validate the accuracy of the micro-tensile bench and quality of the fs-laser-machined tensile specimens, due to its ductile nature and well-characterized properties studied in literature. A mechanical size effect was studied for single crystal copper specimens with different gauge thicknesses. It was observed from the micro-tension testing that the strength of the specimens increased with decreasing gauge thickness occurring in the size-limited tensile gauges. In addition, it was determined there was negligible differences in the size effect seen between the PFIB-machined copper micro-tensile specimens and the fs-laser-machined micro-tensile specimens, demonstrating that the fs-laser is a reliable machining route for the micro-tensile specimens. X-ray computed tomography was used to validate the correct geometry of the machined gauge section produced from an innovative gauge thinning method adopted from IREQ’s research collaborator, Dr. Robert Wheeler. As well, finite-element analysis (FEA) was performed to determine the deformation behaviour under both linear-elastic and non-linear elastoplastic conditions of (100) copper and 415 steel models simulated in pure tension, prior to the fabrication of the micro-tensile specimens, respectively. Furthermore, significant progress has been made towards targeting martensite grains in the 415-steel microstructure using electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) analysis to produce single crystal and interphase interface micro-tensile specimens. A workflow towards grain targeting using EBSD analysis has been developed, as well as for the relocation of grains using reference fiducial marks for future fabrication of the single crystal and interphase interface 415 micro-tensile specimens. / Thesis / Master of Applied Science (MASc) / Hydro-Quebec is an energy utilities company that operates the design of Francis hydro-turbines to supply hydroelectric power across the province of Quebec. The hydro-turbines have an expected service life of 70 years. Unfortunately, the turbines can get replaced by new ones prior to reaching half of its service life, due to the development of severe fatigue crack growth in the primary components of the turbines. A solution proposed by the researchers at the Hydro-Quebec Research Institute (IREQ) is to determine a linkage between the turbine’s steel’s microstructure and the mechanical behaviour of the turbine steels. Deformation of the material starts at the microstructure level, where dislocations glide through the material lattice, causing both reversible (elastic) and irreversible (plastic) deformation. Therefore, a solution was proposed by the researchers at IREQ to create computational models of the steel microstructure to predict the deformation of the steel’s microstructure. Being able to predict the deformation mechanisms through the simulation models of the microstructures allows for engineers at Hydro-Quebec to schedule regular maintenance of the turbines more efficiently and provide metallurgists the knowledge on what is occurring at the microstructure level and what can be done to improve the chemical and physical composition of the steel. To develop the digital twin models, experimental data must be collected through mechanical testing of miniature mechanical test specimens of the turbine steels. The mechanical properties of the single phases and interphase interface specimens are fed into the models as building blocks to building a microstructure map of the turbine steels. Micro-tension testing of micro-tensile specimen provides direct information about the material’s mechanical properties. In this work, a reliable and efficient fabrication route for micro-tensile specimens was developed for the purpose of extracting mechanical properties of single phase and interphase interface turbine steel specimens using focused ion beam (FIB) and femtosecond laser machining.
