Neutron tunneling in nanostructured systems: isotopical effect

Matiwane, Aphiwe 11 1900 (has links)
Tunneling phenomenon has been studied since the time of Sir Isaac Newton. In the case of neutron tunneling phenomenon, it is the quantum mechanics wave-particle duality which manifests itself. In this case, particularly, the neutron wave-packet under total reflection condition suffers the so-called frustrated total reflection as known in standard optics. More accurately, this tunneling phenomenon shows itself via sharp dips in the plateau of total reflection. The prerequisite to observe such quantum mechanics phenomenon lies within a thin film Fabry-Perot resonator configuration. This thin film Fabry-Perot resonator geometry consists of two reflecting mirrors separated by a transparent material from a neutron optics viewpoint. In view of the specific neutron scattering properties related to the spin of the neutron wave-packet. As a direct proof, isotopic nickel based thin films Fabry-Perot resonator have been fabricated by depositing thin film of nickel by ion beam sputtering. The vacuum chamber was pumped down to the pressure of 10-8 mbar and deposition was performed at pressure of 2x10-4 mbar. The deposition rate was kept at 1.5 nm / minute and thickness layers were monitored by a calibrated quartz microbalance. Unpolarized neutron reflectometry measurements were carried out at the ORPHEE reactor using the time-of-flight EROS reflectometer. The incidence neutron wavelength varied between 3 – 25 Å. The grazing angle and angular resolution were of the order of 0.8˚ and 0.05 respectively. The software program, a Matlab routine for the simulation of specular X-ray and neutron reflectivity data with matrix technique, was employed to simulate the phenomenon and thereafter the experimentally obtained data and calculated (theoretical) data were compared. From the analysis of the comparison, a conclusion was drawn about the agreement between experimental data and theoretical data. The tunneling phenomenon has been observed in nanostructured isotopic nickel based thin film Fabry-Perot resonator. It manifested itself by the existence of dips, tunneling resonances, in the total reflection plateau due to quasi-bound states in the isotopic nickel based thin film Fabry-Perot resonator. In total, there were 7 tunneling resonances. The full widths at half maximum of these dips were found to decrease with increasing momentum wave vector transfer (Q) and this correlated to the neutron lifetime in the nanostructured isotopic nickel based thin film Fabry-Perot resonator. / Physics / M. [en] OPTICAL FIBER FABRY-PEROT CAVITIES FOR SENSING TEMPERATURE, STRAIN AND MAGNETIC FIELD / [pt] FIBRAS ÓPTICAS COM CAVIDADES FABRY-PEROT PARA SENSORIAMENTO DE TEMPERATURA, DEFORMAÇÃO LONGITUDINAL E CAMPO MAGNÉTICO

LARISSA MARIA BESERRA SOARES 13 June 2016 (has links)
[en] This thesis discusses the results obtained with an intrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) fiber, for sensing longitudinal strain, temperature and magnetic field. The FPI was constructed by splicing a capillary fiber between two pieces of standard telecommunication fiber, forming a rectangular air cavity. This cavity, when acting as a longitudinal deformation sensor has a sensitivity nine times greater than a typical Bragg grating (FBG). However, when it acts as a temperature sensor, the sensitivity is much smaller than a Bragg grating, making it useful for various applications. The magnetic field sensor was built placing the air cavity on a magnetostrictive material, so that it converted the changes brought in its length due to the application of the magnetic field in longitudinal deformation. The sensor showed a sensitivity to the magnetic field four times higher than when it is built with a Bragg grating.

Recherche, développement et réalisation d'un contrôleur de Fabry-Perot de nouvelle génération / Research, development and realization of a new generation Fabry-Perot controller

Ouattara, Issa 25 June 2015 (has links)
The Physics of Galaxies Team of Laboratoire d'Astrophysique de Marseille (LAM) has developed a new type of Fabry-Perot, with three amplified piezoelectric actuators and three capacitive sensors to control the spacing and parallelism of mirror plates of approximately 200 µm with a positioning accuracy of 3 nm.The purpose of this manuscript, consisting of 3 parts is the control of this interferometer. The first part, consisting of Chapters 1 and 2 presents the general interferometry Fabry-Perot and then describes 3DNTT and BTFI instruments which will be installed the next generation interferometer and its associated controller. The design and implementation of a hybrid amplifier to reduce non-linearities of the piezoelectric actuators (hysteresis and creep) end this first part. The second part, Chapters 3 and 4, describes the development and implementation of the controller. For this, an approach based on codesign concept was adopted. The thus achieved controller consists of a Microzed development board whose heart is a system on chip of the 7000 series Zynq EPP (FPGA + Dual-Core ARM Cortex A9) and an interface card with converters (3 ADC and 3 DAC) and power supply circuits. For the finalization of the controller, two steps are necessary: hardware design in Xilinx Vivado and software design in Xilinx SDK.The third and final section, chapters 5 and 6 deals with the Fabry-Perot space-state modeling and its control: a classic control based on PID control and a robust and optimal control based on KALMAN filtering. This last part concludes the outlook may result from contributions of this work on the monitoring and control of the Fabry-Perot.

Terahertz oscillation and stimulated emission from planar microcavities

Gehlhaar, Robert 17 July 2007 (has links)
In the past decades, the miniaturization in optics led to new devices with structural sizes in the range of the light wavelength, where the photonic modes are con- fined and the number of states is limited. In the smallest microcavities, i.e. micrometer sized optical resonators, the propagation of only one mode is permitted that is simultaneously amplified internally. This particularly strong enhancement of the electric field is directly related to the quality factor of the cavity. By introducing an optical dipole into a high-Q microcavity, the spontaneous emission is amplified at the cavity mode frequency enabling stimulated emission in an inverted system. Although some of theses cavity e®ects can only be understood by quantum elec- trodynamic theory, most mechanisms are accessible by classical and semi-classical approaches. In this thesis, one-dimensional planar microcavities with quality factors up to 4500 have been fabricated by physical vapor deposition of dielectric thin films and organic active materials. A new cavity design based on anisotropic dielectric mirrors grown by oblique angle deposition microcavities with two energetically shifted orthogonally polarized modes is presented. The application of these anisotropic structures for terahertz di®erence signal generation is demonstrated in spectrally and time resolved transmission experiments, where optical beats with repetition rates in the terahertz range are observed. Optically pumped organic vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) have been realized by applying an organic solid state laser compound and high reflectance distributed Bragg reflectors. These lasers combine a very low laser threshold with small beam divergence and good stability. A transfer of the anisotropic design towards an organic VCSEL results in the generation of two perpendicularly polarized laser modes with a splitting adjustable by the fabrication conditions. The observation of an oscillation of two laser modes in a photomixing experiment proves a phase coupling mechanism. This demonstrates the potential of the anisotropic cavity design for a passive or active component in a terahertz radiation source or frequency generator. Furthermore, microcavities with two and three coupled resonators are investigated. By the application of time-resolved transmission experiments, spatial oscil- lations of the internal electric field - photonic Bloch oscillations - are successfully demonstrated. In combination with the anisotropic microcavities, this is a second concept for the modulation of transmitted light with terahertz frequencies. All experiments are accompanied by numerical or analytical models. Transmission experiments of continuously incident light and single laser pulses are compared with transfer matrix simulations and Fourier transform based approaches. For the modeling of emission experiments, a plane wave expansion method is successfully used. For the analysis of the organic VCSEL dynamics, we apply a set of rate equations that explains the gain switching process.

Silicon based microcavity enhanced light emitting diodes

Potfajova, Jaroslava 07 December 2009 (has links)
Realising Si-based electrically driven light emitters in a process technology compatible with mainstream microelectronics CMOS technology is key requirement for the implementation of low-cost Si-based optoelectronics and thus one of the big challenges of semiconductor technology. This work has focused on the development of microcavity enhanced silicon LEDs (MCLEDs), including their design, fabrication, and experimental as well as theoretical analysis. As a light emitting layer the abrupt pn-junction of a Si diode was used, which was fabricated by ion implantation of boron into n-type silicon. Such forward biased pn-junctions exhibit room-temperature EL at a wavelength of 1138 nm with a reasonably high power efficiency of 0.1%. Two MCLEDs emitting light at the resonant wavelength about 1150 nm were demonstrated: a) 1-lambda MCLED with the resonator formed by 90 nm thin metallic CoSi2 mirror at the bottom and semitransparent distributed Bragg reflector (DBR) on the top; b) 5.5-lambda MCLED with the resonator formed by high reflecting DBR at the bottom and semitransparent top DBR. Using the appoach of the 5.5-lambda MCLED with two DBRs the extraction efficiency is enhanced by about 65% compared to the silicon bulk pn-junction diode.

[en] MICRO-STRUCTURED OPTICAL FIBERS SENSORS / [pt] SENSORES A FIBRAS ÓPTICAS MICROESTRUTURADAS

FERNANDO CRISTIANO FAVERO 09 November 2021 (has links)
[en] In this work, we have demonstrated the use of Photonic Crystal Fiber (PCF), in different configurations, for sensing applications. The high birefringence and low temperature dependence characteristics of the PCF were explored for sensing hydrostatic pressure and deformation in a reflection configuration. Sensing was based on the analysis of the interference patterns between the modes that propagate in the birefringent fiber under the variation of pressure and deformation applied to the fiber. We have also demonstrated a technique to manufacture a Fabry-Perot Interferometer (FPI) cavity within an optical fiber with control of the cavity length and thus the control of the period of the fringes in the interference pattern. The Fabry-Perot Interferometer investigated presented a very high fringe contrast, above 30 dB, and showed a record value of the contrast of the fringes for FPI silica-air. The FPI device integrated within the fiber was tested as a strain sensor and also as a device to monitor vibration. A study of the relative sensitivity of the length of the FPI was also investigated. Another interferometer was built from a piece of standard fiber and a PCF with two regions of collapsed microstructures. These regions allowed the excitation and recombination of the fiber modes. This device was tested as a refractive index sensor, presenting a fringe contrast above 40 dB. An application of this device was the development of a humid sensor to monitor human breathing.

Electro-optic Polymer Based Fabry-Perot Interferometer Devices for Optoelectronic Applications

Gan, Haiyong January 2008 (has links)
Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) devices are designed based on the electro-optic (EO) activities of nonlinear optical (NLO) polymer materials for tunable optical filters (TOFs) and spatial light modulators (SLMs). The performance of the EO polymer based FPI devices is theoretically modeled with first order approximation on the FPI cavity interface phase dispersion. NLO materials including TCBD coupled hybrid sol-gel, AJL8/amorphous polycarbonate (APC), and AJLS102/APC are incorporated in FPI structures with distributed Bragg reflector mirrors and transparent conducting oxide electrodes for TOFs. High finesse (over 200), low drive voltage (10 dB isolation ratio with 5 V), and fast settling time (about sub-millisecond) are achieved. The physical origin of the large tunabilities is explored and the contributions from EO effect and inverse piezoelectric effect are analyzed. EO polymer SWOHF3ME/APC is employed in FPI devices with simplified structures for SLMs. Modulation beyond megahertz level is achieved with constant modulation ratio from DC frequency to high operation speed. The operation speed can be potentially over gigahertz with improved device and drive circuit design. When the EO polymer based SLM is configured to work at near the resonance band of the NLO material, the spectral tunability is increased due to resonance enhanced EO activity and the SLM performance is significantly improved. The EO polymer based FPI devices can be further optimized and are promising candidates for many optoelectronic applications.

Obtaining and characterization of Fabry-Perot filters for application in acquisition of polarization-difference images.

Araújo, Hugo Puertas de 08 December 2004 (has links)
In the present work, it was investigated some properties and applications for polarization-difference images (PDI\'s), what led us to the proposition of two acquisition systems for such images as alternatives to the architecture proposed by Tyo (1996). The first system here discussed uses two cameras and two polarizers in the attainment of PDI\'s. The image elements redundancy is supposed to overcome a deficiency of the above-mentioned system that is its inability to operate in real time. The second project proposes the use of polarizing filters based on Fabry-Perot structures obtained with birefringent thin films of TiOx. Such filters are the key elements in a device that can be implemented as an integrated microsystem, fully compatible with the CMOS production technologies, available nowadays. Given the possibilities associated with this last project, it was defined as the main goal of this work, the attainment of polarizing filters based on birefringent thin films technology, physically deposited by a DC Sputtering equipment. During the phase of data analysis, it was carried out optical characterizations (spectrofotometry) as well as RBS analysis, both for the filters itself and for the TiOx films, that were previously investigated in order to determine the required parameters for the design of the interference filters. This work is concluded by proving the possibility of using polarizing filters in integrated image acquisition systems, but a remark ismade stating that the employed equipment is not the ideal one for such applications and it is suggested the use of deposition set up capable to monitor thickness and refractive indexes during the run (an example would be an e-beam equipment connected to a transmittance ellipsometer).

Michel, Sébastien 30 June 2008 (has links) (PDF)
