Teachers’ Perceptions of Speaking Anxiety in the Swedish EFL Classroom : An Interview Study of how Six Upper Secondary English Teachers Perceive Speaking Anxiety / Lärares uppfattningar av talängslan i det svenska engelskklassrummet : En intervjustudie om hur sex gymnasielärare uppfattar talängslanWahlström, Andreas January 2022 (has links)
This degree project is an interview study investigating upper secondary EFL teachers’ perceptions of speaking anxiety in their classrooms. The aim of the study is to gain insight into how the teachers perceive the prevalence of foreign language speaking anxiety (FLSA) among their pupils, the factors contributing to FLSA and what methods they use to manage FLSA in their EFL classrooms. To achieve this aim, a phenomenological approach was applied, and six teachers were interviewed using semi-structured interviews in a mediumsized city in Sweden. Through the interviews, information of the teachers’ experiences in relation to the prevalence of FLSA, the contributing factors to FLSA and what methods they used to manage FLSA were gathered. The results showcase that the teachers perceive FLSA to be present in their EFL classrooms but to varying degrees. They perceived that the factors contributing to FLSA could be many, but the factors all the teachers named were fear of evaluation, having many people listening to your speech, being focused on correctness in the FL, and being inexperienced and afraid to make mistakes in the FL. To counteract this with methods of managing FLSA, the teachers perceived that positive reinforcement, communication, group division, individual adaptation, a focus on meaning over correctness, and showing understanding for the pupils’ feelings are suitable methods to manage FLSA in their classrooms. The most common of these methods was the usage of individual adaptations, where the teacher and pupil communicate to find the most suitable solution with reference to the knowledge requirements of the English subject and the pupil’s needs. Lastly, the results indicate that FLSA is a complex phenomenon in EFL education due to the variety of factors that might contribute to it and the variety of methods potentially useful in counteracting it.

Factors contributing to late antenatal care booking at Thulamahashe local area at Bushbuckridge sub-district, Ehlanzeni district in Mpumalanga ProvinceMkhari, Mkateko Maria 11 1900 (has links)
Delayed access to antenatal care (ANC) has been linked to maternal and foetal mortality and morbidity. Early and regular attendance of antenatal care by pregnant women is very important as it could identify birthing complications and includes amongst others, measuring of blood pressure to exclude pregnancy induced hypertension and measuring of weight to exclude intrauterine growth restriction.
The purpose of the study was to explore the factors contributing to late antenatal booking around Thulamahashe local area so that interventions can be done to ensure that all pregnant women start antenatal care as soon as they miss a period, at twelve weeks at the most or before 20 weeks of gestation. The study was conducted at Thulamahashe local area which consists of 4 eight hour clinics and 1 twenty- four hours community health centre, at Bushbuckridge sub district, Ehlanzeni district, Mpumalanga province in South Africa.
Data was collected using a researcher designed questionnaire which is a list of questions which were asked from respondents and which gave indirect measures of the variables under investigation. The structured questionnaire consisted of both open and close ended questions, which were used to collect information directly from pregnant women.
The population of the study was pregnant women who had started antenatal care after 20 weeks of gestation, who were 18 years and above. The sample size consisted of 25 pregnant women who had booked late for antenatal care who were drawn from each facility by simple random sampling method and the total sample size was 127 respondents.
The results indicated that most women initiated ANC later than the recommendations by World Health Organization (WHO) which is less than twelve weeks of gestation. Factors that were identified as associated with late antenatal booking were midwives’ attitude distance to the clinic, poor infrastructure, unplanned pregnancy, lack of education and unemployment. / Health Studies / M.A. (Health Studies)

Career indecision amongst undergraduate university students at an academic institution in the Western CapeGoliath, Dané January 2012 (has links)
Magister Commercii - MCom / One of the most important decisions adolescents are confronted with in the transitioning period from high school to tertiary institutions, is making career decisions. Young adults and adolescents may experience high levels of stress when they are expected to make decisions pertaining to a desired career. The stressful period may be too overwhelming for them.As a result it may have adverse implications on the quality of their career choice. The applicability of career indecision amongst undergraduate university students is considered an inability to choose a university major or occupation (Brogan & Hiebert, 2006).According to Creed, Patton and Prideaux (2006), career indecision is linked to issues related to career development and problems in making career related decisions, society’s expectations and perceptions, as well as the role of the family which may have an impact on the student’s ability to make career choices. In a study conducted by Creed and Patton (2003) it was revealed that age, gender and career indecision were predictors of career maturity knowledge. Joordan, Smithard and Burger (2009) postulate that career indecision influences career related thoughts and career decisions and plays an important role in the way individuals formulate career goals. Gordon and Meyer (2002) are of the view that it is not atypical for individuals to experience a certain level of developmental career indecision, this may be resultant to not having adequate experience and sufficient knowledge pertaining to the world of work. Developmental career indecision amongst students is viewed as a wholesome state which may ultimately prompt the student to explore careers and set goals (Feldt,2010).Brown, Brooks and Associates (1996), delineate that a career choice is an act which replicate an individual’s motivation. This action compels the individual to work toward their goals and to achieve it. As students venture on attaining their goal (career choice) they are confronted with many challenges, some of which include the transition from secondary school to tertiary level and the adaptation to an academic environment. This emphasizes the importance of career guidance, and that it should not be neglected. Stead and Watson (1999) conducted a study on first year university students in the Western Cape which revealed that students from disadvantaged schools were unable to choose study directions at tertiary level due to negligence of not providing career guidance at school level.Resultant to this, students were not afforded the opportunity to make informed decisions pertaining to career choices. Brown et al. (1996) presume the more informed an individual is about career choices and their
abilities, the more likely they are to make career choices as they are more
prepared to do so.The current study aimed to examine career indecision experienced by undergraduate university students at an academic institution in the Western Cape. The study examined the differences in career indecision based on gender and age, it also examined the relationship between a lack of information and career indecision and lastly access to a career counsellor and career indecision. A biographical questionnaire and the Career Decision Making Difficulties Questionnaire (CDDQ) were administered to undergraduate university students. The sample (n = 224) consisted of first, second and third year male and female undergraduate commerce students. The results indicated that there are significant
differences in career decision making based on gender and age. In addition, the results revealed that there is a moderate relationship between lack of information and career indecision and findings also indicated a significant relationship between access to a career counsellor and career indecision. The results of the current study should however, be interpreted with caution as a convenience sampling strategy was utilized thus limiting generalizabilty to the broader population of students. Furthermore limitations are put forth and the study concludes with recommendations for further research and for academic institutions for consideration.

The contours, dynamics and impacts of African football migration to South AfricaSolberg, Eirik Futsaeter 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MA (Political Science. International Studies)--Stellenbosch University, 2008. / This study explores the contours, dynamics and impacts of African football migration to South
Africa. It argues that there has been a change in the international political economy of sport, and that
this change is affecting world football migration. In addition to the study’s primary focus on African
football migration, it also reviews substantial parts of the literature concerning the phenomenon of
football migration, in order to explain which dynamics characterise football migration. The thesis
also accounts for the incentives that motivate African football migration to South Africa, and the
impact such players have on the South African domestic elite league. The study identifies which
incentives exist for promoting football cooperation in the context of Southern Africa, and how
football migration patterns correlate or contrast with general migration patterns to South Africa.
The study makes use of two theoretical frameworks, by Paul Darby and Joseph Maguire, to
understand and explain player migration. These frameworks provide an understanding of the
different aspects and structures shaping player migration, and should be interpreted as
complementary and not contrasting approaches. The examination of the frameworks’ theoretical
deficiencies and implications provides the basis for further research in the conclusion. The
conclusion argues that there exists a need to create a new theoretical framework within which future
studies can be concluded.
The study is motivated by the general lack of academic research on the specific subject and
migration to South Africa. The latter is suggested by the body of literature, concerning African
migration to South Africa, which argues for more research on the issue to get a better understanding
of the current situation.
This study is based on both primary and secondary sources, the latter being represented by e.g.
academic journal articles and books. In addition it was necessary to conduct fieldwork to provide
answers to the research questions. The study makes use of exploratory qualitative methods in order
to provide a conclusion, and to answer the research questions. It can be characterised as exploratory
because it will offer new insights into a specific issue which, until now, has not been researched
extensively.
The analysis of the data and desktop research revealed certain trends, and provides a basis for
answering the research questions. The study concludes that football migration, like conventional
migration, is very complex and influenced by several interwoven factors. Hence a broad scope is
crucial to understand the phenomenon correctly and not exaggerate the importance of some factors
above others.
In the conclusion the current position of the PSL is explained in relation to the two theoretical
frameworks and the work of Pierre Lanfranchi and Matthew Taylor. It is argued that the PSL, unlike
most other African leagues, has managed to cope with the ‘enduring problem of African football’,
and has transformed into a commercialised, commoditised league heavily influenced by corporate
interests.

Empowering destitute people towards shalom: a contextual missiological studyRoux, Gerrit Johannes Nieuwenhoudt 31 August 2007 (has links)
This thesis proposes that the destitute people of South Africa, and specifically Tshwane, comprise an often neglected group of people that can and must be helped by means of missions with the destitute to experience growing degrees of SHALOM. Part of this would include a drive to re-integrate the destitute into society as functioning members of that society.
This is undertaken through developing a proposed model that strives to empower destitute people in a variety of ways, using a variety of "movements" and strategies. A model such as this is necessary in the light of the seeming inability of helpers (including churches, CBO's and other non-religious organizations), to come to grips with the complex problem of destitution in our country, and in Tshwane specifically. This perceived inability is addressed by exploring the problem of destitution, in the process seeking a better understanding of a complex problem, followed by considering the responsibility of the church as missiological agent of social healing and ministry.
Missiologically, SHALOM is perceived as the aim/ goal of missions with the destitute, where SHALOM refers to wellbeing, justice, relational, completeness, whole-being, peace, etc.
The model is intended to serve as a viable strategy in the arsenal of churches that take the missiological call towards social healing seriously, and to provide a comprehensive, holistic approach when dealing with the destitute.
It is postulated that the church, more than any other organization, should enjoy an advantage when it comes to social ministry, because of two reasons, namely (1) a strong missiological point of departure as a motivation to be involved in social ministry, where we see the church as a partner in the Missio Dei, and (2) a strong missiological aim, namely SHALOM, which transcends mere charity or welfare, but seeks to empower people holistically. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / D. Developing a model to curb bullying in secondary schools in the Uthungulu District of KwaZulu-NatalSingh, Gunam Dolan 01 1900 (has links)
This study investigated the severity of bullying perpetration in secondary schools in the Uthungulu District of KwaZulu-Natal. The study further sought to establish the various types of bullying that were rife in secondary schools, the factors that contributed to bullying perpetration and the negative impact of bullying behaviour on all stakeholders of the school system. An in-depth literature study was conducted in this regard. Accordingly, various theories relevant to the phenomenon were explored exhaustively. A qualitative research design and methodology was employed to investigate the phenomenon through interviews with participants from five secondary schools, including the circuit manager of the circuit concerned. Strict ethical principles were adhered to throughout and the study was also evaluated for reliability and validity. The study found that the factors that contributed considerably to the problem of bullying in secondary schools were embedded at the level of the family, the school and the community. In addition, the study established that the impact of bullying was so severe that it affected the day- to- day functioning of the school from a management perspective where a considerable amount of time was spent managing the problem, substantially reducing valuable teaching time. The impact was also felt significantly among victims who experienced low self-esteem, humiliation, embarrassment and palpable levels of stress and anxiety that ultimately led to appreciable rates of absenteeism, truancy, dropping out of school, transfers to other schools, ill-health, depression and even suicide. On the basis of the findings of the literature study and the empirical investigation, a model to curb bullying was developed, which required all stakeholders of the secondary schools in the Uthungulu District of KwaZulu-Natal to work collectively as a team to manage the problem effectively and efficiently. / Educational Leadership and Management / D. Factors contributing to late antenatal care booking in Mopani District of Limpopo ProvinceRagolane, Victoria Joyce 12 1900 (has links)
Late booking is associated with high perinatal and maternal morbidity and mortality. The World Health Organization (WHO, 2016) recommends that pregnant women should book for ANC full first before 12 weeks of gestation. The aim of the study was to explore and describe factors contributing to late antenatal care booking at public health facilities of Mopani District. A qualitative approach was used. In-depth interviews were conducted with twenty one pregnant women who booked after twelve weeks of gestation and agreed to participate in the study.
The study was conducted at four selected public health care facilities rendering maternal health services in Mopani district. Data was collected through in-depth interview with the aid of an interview guide. The analysis of data was done manually using a coding system to develop themes.
The results revealed that there are personal and provider factors contributing to late antenatal care booking in Mopani district. Personal factors contributing to late antenatal care booking were unplanned and unaccepted pregnancy, lack of support, late recognition of pregnancy, cultural and religious beliefs, ignorance of the importance of antenatal care and fear.
System or provider factors contributing to late booking were long waiting time, midwives’ attitude and lack of resources. / Health Studies / M.A. (Public Health)
