Canadian university internationalization: selective perceptions of five faculty members

Friesen, Rhonda J. 08 April 2011 (has links)
Internationalization of post secondary institutions has been suggested as one of the most critical undertakings of higher education today. Despite growing interest in this phenomenon as an institutional initiative, relatively few studies consider internationalization from the perspective of faculty members whom some have identified as key catalysts of the internationalization process. Using a phenomenological research approach to examine the experience of five faculty members actively engaged in the internationalization process of their Canadian university I seek to understand how participants define internationalization, what motivates them to engage in this process and how the institutional and individual efforts to internationalize influence each other. I compare faculty motivations with institutional positions through an analysis of strategic institutional documents using de Wit’s (2002) internationalization rationale categories. Results suggest that institutional internationalization might be more effective in engaging faculty members when faculty perspectives and priorities are considered in the development of institutional strategies.

A polÃtica educacional, arrimada nas propostas neoliberais, intensifica as privatizaÃÃes, a terceirizaÃÃo e a informalizaÃÃo, conduzindo o trabalho docente à precarizaÃÃo. / The research concentrates the analysis on the faculty member work at âUniversidade Estadual do CearÃâ having as the basis the work conditions of the professors from the social study center and its applicabilites. The specif goals targeted the analyzis and understandin of the changes in the work of the faculty member considering the reformation of the State and the brasilian university and also to understand the state public policy and the teaching in the higler education system in Cearà and the analysis through the profesors perception of CESA about the work conditions at UECE. All the methodologic process was acyvired through bibliographe research, the documental research and the empiric search with the application of quizzes involuing faculty members from CESA. We verified that the transformations in the labor world has a strong impact on the hioher education system and consequently in the work of faculty members mahing it very weal. This has a oirect relation wizh the global capitalism crisis with the extauctural changes of brasilian hiohez educational system an with the estrategles applied by the neo-liberals governments following the instructions of the international institutions, the brasilian government has been delegating to the private sector the responsibilities of financing and applying the higlen education through different private estrategles in the public sector, expanding the rench of money to use. The education policy forms from the neo-liberals proposals intensifies the privatizations, the outsourcing work, the informal work, leanding the faculty work to be very weak. The faculty work area in the highen education has re-estructed in a substantial way. The flexibility of the hiring process has imposed itself in the private and publics IES. The hiring process of professors for substitution work has been increased and this forces a strong intensification of work hours not only in the environment but also affects the family and personal life furthermore there are no adequate working conditions, if we consider that, most of time the equipment and also the ergonomic conditions are inefficient and non-existent.

Exploring Perceptions of the Transition From Health Science Practitioner to Academic

Stewart, MaryAnne J 01 January 2019 (has links)
Transitioning from a clinical practitioner to an educator in the health sciences is a difficult task for many professionals. Although, clinically, these individuals have achieved a level of expertise, they are not necessarily trained to teach in a classroom setting and may find it difficult to transition into their role as novice. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to examine faculty members' preparedness during their transition to academia and their perceptions of the need for more support during the first 5 years of teaching. Vygotsky's and Dewey's theories of social constructivism and Knowles's assumptions of adult learning provided the framework for this research. The main research question focused on exploring perceptions about instructional preparedness and support for university educators, at a university in Detroit, Michigan, in health science fields. The data sources were interviews and observations from 9 health science faculty members. Interviews were coded based on perceptive categories such as experiences, knowledge, and opinions, whereas observations were coded using recurrent patterns of identified standards of university teaching based on teaching preparedness. Results showed 5 areas where the participants felt they needed more support: peer mentoring, administration support, institutional support, interaction with students, and instructional methodology technology training. Findings may provide insight to university administrators on strategies to provide more effective professional development to health science educators. Potential implications for positive social change include increased job satisfaction and retention for professionals who become health science educators.

Faculty Members' Readiness for E-learning in the College of Basic Education in Kuwait

Alajmi, Mohammed 08 1900 (has links)
E-learning exposes students and instructors to different learning models such as constructivism rather than the traditional learning. E-learning as a part of today's technology has proven that it is appropriate for most students' mentalities and is a mind tool which promotes different learning models, such as problem solving strategy, collaborative learning, and critical thinking. The Public Authority for Applied Education and Training (PAAET) in Kuwait consists of more than 10 academic colleges with a total number of 120 faculty members. The College of Basic Education (CBE) is one of them. The implementation of e-learning at the College of Basic Education requires that all the learning community members, instructors and students, understand that an e-learning course is like a learning community with the privilege of sharing knowledge, opinions, experiences related to class subject, and productive outcomes that are beneficial to this learning community. This study indentified the statistically significant differences in demographic characteristics of e-learning adopters and non-adopters among faculty members at CBE, examining faculty members' attitudes and skills toward e-learning readiness. The study will explore perceived barriers that face e-learning at CBE. Applying the Rogers diffusion of innovation theory, the influence of 4 factors was examined regarding faculty readiness for e-learning at CBE. Chi-square techniques, t-tests, and factor analysis were conducted to analyze the data and answer research questions. Statistically significant differences were identified among e-learning adopters and non-adopters regarding age difference and department discipline, both technical and non-technical.

The status of and associations between professional development, job satisfaction and anticipated jobretention of young faculty members in China's private colleges

Xu, Yue 01 January 2014 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to (a) determine which types of professional development (PD) opportunities exist for young faculty members in private colleges in China, the extent to which they participate in them, and their perceptions of how helpful each type is; (b) gauge faculty members' level of job satisfaction and anticipated job retention; and (c) measure the degree to which these perceptions of PD helpfulness, job satisfaction, and anticipated job retention are associated. An on-line survey was completed by 732 full-time faculty members in Shanghai, 35 years or younger, who responded to demographic items; job satisfaction items adapted from the Job Descriptive Index and the Job In General measures; anticipated job retention items; and a collection of items developed by the researcher regarding the availability of, participation in, and perceived helpfulness of various types of PD. Guskey (2000)'s theory of professional development provides the theoretical framework, identifying seven major PD models: training, study groups, mentoring, observation/assessment, involvement in a development/improvement process, inquiry/action research, and individually guided activities. Results of the study indicated that : 1) Guskey's (2000) model of professional development is widespread and applicable in Chinese private colleges although web-based learning should be added; 2) young faculty members in Shanghai's private colleges are least satisfied with pay and most satisfied with colleagues and supervision; 3) over half the faculty members agreed that they were thinking about moving to public colleges; 4) the helpfulness of professional development accounts for 30.1% of the variance (a large effect) in job satisfaction and 7.2% of the variance (a small-medium effect) in job retention, beyond that accounted for by salary and discipline; and, 5) there is an indirect effect of PD helpfulness perceptions on anticipated job retention via job satisfaction. Additional findings pertaining to specific types of PD are presented along with a discussion of the implications for practice and suggestions for further research. The extent to which a variety of types of PD being used in Shanghai are perceived to be helpful may be, in part, leading to increasing young faculty members' job satisfaction and anticipated retention in Chinese private colleges.
