The changing landscape of IS project failure: an examination of the key factors

Yes / Information systems (IS) project failure has been a recurring problem for decades. The purpose of this paper is twofold: first, to examine the key factors that influence project failure and an analysis of the major areas that can have a significant impact on success; and second, to explore some of the key aspects that have an impact on project management performance from the practitioner perspective and discusses the problems faced by organizations in the closer integration of change and project management. Design/methodology/approach: This study critically reviews the IS failure literature developing a synthesized view of the key issues and common reasons for projects to fail. The approach taken in this study is one that focuses on a number of key questions that pull together the relevant themes in this genre of research whilst highlighting many of the implications for practitioners and organizations alike. Findings: Key questions remain on the underlying causes of instances of poor project management as an IS failure factor. The literature has omitted to develop a deeper analysis of the associations between failure factors and the potential causal relationships between these factors. The realization of project benefits relies on the success of both change and project management yet the formal integration of these two disciplines is constrained by separate standards bodies and an immature body of research. Research limitations/implications: This study is limited by its theoretical nature lacking an empirical element to provide a deeper analysis of IS failure factors and their interrelationships. This specific area is a recommendation for future research, where causal relationships between failure factors could be developed via a mathematic-based method such as interpretive structural modeling. Practical implications: With failure rates of IS projects still unacceptably high after decades of attempts to significantly change outcomes, a deeper analysis of this topic is required. The research gaps and recommendations for practitioners highlighted in this study have the potential to provide valuable contributions to this topic of research. Originality/value: The intent of this study is to present a new perspective of this genre of IS research that develops the main arguments and gaps in the literature from the practitioner viewpoint.

Although in the past research, our nation scholars seldom pay attention to this topic. From 2002 to 2005 our nation important management Journal has only four articles. Therefore, Taiwan ¡¥s researchers have many research space to expand it. Prior research on M&A founded that in nation ¡¥s enterprises M&A success opportunity are more bigger than M&A in the across nation. For this reason, many scholars suggest the key success or fail factor is ¡§culture different¡¨. Beside this answer, I want to find the others factor by case study which is including BenQ Thunder Tiger and Yageo that will affect Taiwanese enterprises M&A European and American enterprises. Then Taiwanese enterprises which are horizontal M&A(M&A that take place within one industry, often between direct competitors)can reference the research result. The results indicate that: Merger and acquire between European and American famous enterprise often over reliable result in due diligence not exactly. Thinking difference and nation superiority are main reason which cause conflict between acquire and acquired firm. Taiwanese enterprises generally do not take ground for human due diligence, Taiwanese enterprises which lack of international people are not good for postmerger integration. Mergers and acquires strategy is the least choice to enter overseas market.

Information systems project failure – analysis of causal links using interpretive structural modelling

Yes / The analysis of the root causes of information systems project failure has been the subject of intense scrutiny for some time within industry and the academic community. Researchers have developed various models, notions of failure and categorisations to succinctly classify project failure into a set of key factors for organisations and project managers to focus on in their attempts to avoid failure. This study incorporates a technique titled: interpretive structural modelling as the methodology to formalise the relationships between the selected failure factors. This approach is positioned as a mechanism that can yield greater insights into the relationships between the factors surrounding project failure, thereby developing a better understanding of how these relationships can have a bearing on project outcomes. The findings identify key driving variables that are presented as having significant impact on the other factors within the model. A number of variables are also identified as being heavily dependent on other connected factors highlighting that a failure in one or more of these connected factors is likely to result in a failure in one or more of the dependent factors unless timely steps are taken to address these key issues. This research details a number of practical implications for senior management and project managers as well as the academic community. These considerations form an underlying thread within this study as specific practice-related implications are highlighted and discussed throughout the study.

Success Strategies Among Immigrant Small Business Owners in the Southeastern United States

Although considerable concern exists regarding immigrant businesses, few studies address immigrant small business owners' strategies for success and sustainability. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the strategies that immigrant small business owners in metro Atlanta, Georgia can use to sustain their business beyond 5 years. Cultural theory formed the conceptual framework for this study. A purposeful sample of 20 immigrant small business owners in metro Atlanta provided the data garnered from semistructured interviews for this research study. Using open coding, and modified van Kaam analysis of the interview data, 5 themes emerged for immigrant small businesses that were successful and survived beyond 5 years: strong work ethic and family dynamics, flexibility and independence, limited societal barriers, business experience, persistence and great customer service. Two themes emerged among immigrant small business owners whose businesses failed, which were, inadequate financial posture, and poor business and managerial knowledge. The findings of this study may contribute to social change as the strategies presented could guide new immigrants in establishing successful and sustainable immigrant small businesses. Results from this study could help educate small business owners about some of the causes of business failures.

A Study of Critical Success and Failure Factors on Self-Branding - A Case of Wholesale & Retail Food Industry

Taiwan is one of the most vibrant societies in the world. The business environment is nowadays known for its economic vitality and healthy business competition mainly from the high degree of entrepreneur, sharp market insights, agile marketing strategy, and rapid adaption to changing business environment. To sum up, Taiwan is equipped with all the critical success factors for global business competition. All these factors help motivate the start-up of small business in Taiwan, and this is particularly true for the food industry as the entry barriers are relatively low in comparison to other industries. In recent years there is a surge of self-branding business and companies in Taiwan largely due to the popularity of online shopping and bulk orders. On the contrary, a significant number of self-branding companies failed to keep their business afloat and eventually had to exit the market. This study use literature reviews based on wholesale and retail food industry, self-branding, as well as critical success and failure factors. The main purpose of this study is to investigate the critical success & failure factors on self-branding for wholesale and retail food industry. First of all, this study uses in-depth interviews with four experienced professionals in self-branding enterprises to define critical success and failure factors for research model. Secondly, this study utilizes content analysis to measure and identify the level of significance and importance and order of priority for critical success and failure factors. The results of this study are as following: 1. There are four critical success factors in self-branding. The most important success factor in self-branding is customer value, followed by innovative marketing strategy and brand trust. The last is price tolerance. 2. There are three failure factors in this study. The business owners¡¦ decision error is the most significant failure factor, followed by brand positioning error, and virulent price competition.

Sustaining change management : Control mechanism’s role in sustaining change initiatives

Purpose: This study aims to investigate the role of Control mechanisms in sustaining Change initiatives. Method: Following qualitative research with inductive approach, the data was collected through semi-structured interviews from 10 change practitioners of multinationals in various fields, including Information Technology, Project Management, Banking, Logistics, Manufacturing and Telecommunication. Grounded theory was used to analyse the empirical findings. Findings: The results show that control mechanism play a crucial role right from guiding and governing the entire process of change. On the other hand, findings reveal a wide range of control tools in context to change management. Also, change readiness is crucial step, it is critical to be well prepared before a change project is initiated. Moreover, new concepts such as design thinking, CAPA (corrective action preventive action) and PDSA (Plan, do, study, act) emerged as control tool throughout the process of change improving efficacy, mistake proofing and driving continuous improvement. Finally, control mechanisms can make contribute to sustenance of CM initiatives through its potential of continuous monitoring and indicating Implications: Theoretically, the study challenges established conceptions of CM by emphasizing the role of preparedness and adaptation. It proposes dynamic frameworks and proactive control methods to facilitate organizational transformation. Practically, it emphasizes the importance of extensive training, logical methods, and a variety of tools for effectively navigating change process.

Restaurants Owner Strategies for Financial Sustainability Beyond 5 Years

The restaurant industry plays an essential role in the U.S. economy. Approximately 26% of small- and medium-sized enterprise restaurants fail during their first year of business operation and 60% cannot sustain beyond 3 years. The objective of this multiple case study was to explore the strategies that small- and medium-sized restaurant owners used to financially sustain business beyond 5 years. The purposive sample consisted of 4 successful restaurant owners who have been in operation for at least 5 years in the southern region of the United States. The general systems theory was the conceptual framework of this study. The data were collected from semistructured interviews, cash flow statement, and profit and loss statements. Member checking and transcript review were used to strengthen the credibility and trustworthiness. The 3 themes that emerged from methodological triangulation after completing the Yin's 5 steps of data analysis were market research, great customer service, and having passion. The findings of this study might serve as a guide for current and future SME restaurant owners to financially sustain business beyond 5 years. The findings of the study may contribute to social change as successful small- and medium-sized enterprise restaurant owners would help address unemployment issues by generating additional jobs and building wealth for themselves, their employees, communities, and the local economy.

In software development, customer trust hinges on a product performing as expectedand ensuring appropriate steps are taken to prevent incidents due to faulty systems. Oneway of achieving this lies within in requirement validation – the process of validatingthe requirements set on the software. However, the complexity of the requirementvalidation domain can be challenging for companies and organizations seeking toimprove their validation processes. This research investigates this area, pinpointingpotential failure factors that may hinder effective requirement validation. The study wasconducted using a multi-case research design, involving individual interviews with fourdistinct divisions at SAAB: hardware, software, systems, and test equipment.This study built upon Niazi’s & Shastry's previous research where findings of failurefactors in requirement engineering are brought forward. What this research has done istaking the failure factors and applying them to requirement validation, which is asubcategory to requirement engineering. The failure factors taken into consideration inthis research are therefore the following: • Vague requirements• Undefined requirements process• Lack of stakeholder involvement• Business needs are not considered• Lack of requirement management• The requirements do not reflect the real needs of the customer• The requirements are inconsistent and/or incomplete• It is expensive to make changes to requirements after they have been agreed• Requirements growth• Stakeholders’ communication problems During the research, focus was placed on noting how often the interviewees mentionedeach failure factor. This helped in understanding which issues were most often seen asproblems in the requirement validation process.Particularly, stakeholder issues and the tendency towards vague requirement definitionsemerged as prevalent problems. The findings of this research do not only concernsafety-critical software companies but can additionally prove beneficial to any industrydealing with stakeholders and product/service requirements. The research providesiiipotential pitfalls in requirement validation, aiding organizations in refining theirapproach for better software product reliability and customer trust.

This thesis focuses on examining key competitive strategies for multinational corporations(MNCs) operating in emerging markets, and what factors contribute to the success or failureof these strategies. Also, this research will study how MNCs can adapt competitive strategiesto fit emerging market characteristics and local market conditions. It will also examine thefactors of variation for competitive strategies across different emerging markets.The empirical findings in this study were acquired using a qualitative single case study of anMNC operating in international markets. The findings were gathered through semi-structuredinterviews to then be analysed and discussed with the literature review to highlight differencesand similarities.The conclusion of this thesis displays competitive strategies used by MNCs in emergingmarkets and the factors that impact success or failure. The single case study of NIBEgenerated examples of competitive strategies in emerging markets, more specifically howacquisition and subsidiaries were used to adapt to local market characteristics. Factorsaffecting the success or failure of MNCs are institutions, networks, local regulations andnorms, together with local market conditions.

ERP system har de senaste åren uppträtt som en central faktor vid framgångsrik informationshantering och agerat som en grundpelare i många företagsorganisationer. Implementering av ett nytt affärssystem är en komplex process vilket bidrar till att organisationer får svårigheter med att genomföra processen. Implementering av affärssystem handlar om att kombinera tidigare separerade system med fokus på att tillhandahålla en mer komplett informationsresurs för en organisation. ERP systemen tog fart under millenniumskiftet y2k och många företag hade vid det laget svårt att implementera systemen med ett positivt slutresultat. Arton år senare så kvarstår problematiken trots att ERP systemen har utvecklats och företagen blivit mer kunniga inom området. Detta visar en studie från Panorama Consulting (2017) där det framkom att 26 procent av företagen misslyckats med implementeringen 74 procent går över budget samt att 59 procent passerade den tänkta tidsplanen. För att finna en lösning på problematiken så har flertalet forskare genomfört studier där fokus ligger på att identifiera de negativt bidragande faktorerna vid ERP implementering. Dessa faktorer kallas för ”Critical failure factors”. Det finns idag lite empirisk forskning där information har samlats från ERP leverantörer. Forskningen som finns grundar sig i gamla teorier för vilka faktorer som bidrar positivt respektive negativt för en implementeringsprocess. Dessa teorier utgår de flesta forskare från i sina studier kring implementeringen av ERP system. Denna studie fokuserar därför på ERP leverantörernas perspektiv kring negativt bidragande faktorer vid implementering av ERP system. Stor vikt har legat på att samla in faktorer från ERP leverantörer för att vid ett senare skede i studien ställa dessa mot de faktorer som nämnts i tidigare studier för att finna samband och eventuella avvikelser. Studien använde sig av intervjuer som datainsamlingsmetod och fem intervjuer har genomförts med erfarna ERP leverantörer. Resultatet av det insamlade materialet från ERP leverantörerna identifierar ett antal kritiska faktorer som kan sammankopplas med faktorer från tidigare studier. Intressant är att studien även identifierat ett antal faktorer som avviker från tidigare studier. Slutsatserna som går att dra från studien är att implementeringsprocesserna kan förbättras och bli avsevärt mycket mer effektiva med hjälp av den nya insikten i problematiken som ERP leverantörerna framför. Medvetenhet om dessa negativt bidragande faktorer vid implementering av ett ERP system bidrar med kunskap inom området för implementeringsprocesser som i sin tur kan användas av företag och privatpersoner för att underlätta och förhindra de problem som kan uppstå i en sådan process. / In recent years, the ERP system has been a key factor in successful information management and served as a foundation for many corporate organizations. Implementing a new business system is a complex process, which leads organizations having difficulties implementing the process. Implementation of business systems involves combining previously separated systems focusing on providing a more complete information resource for an organization. ERP systems accelerated during the millennium shift y2k, and many companies at the time had difficulties to implement the systems with a positive end result. Eighteen years later, the problem remains, despite the fact that ERP systems have evolved and businesses become more knowledgeable in the field. This shows a study from Panorama Consulting (2017) where it was found that 26 percent of companies failed with implementation. 74 percent exceed budget and 59 percent passed the intended schedule. To find a solution to the problem, most researchers have conducted studies focusing on identifying the negative contributing factors in ERP implementation. These factors are called "Critical failure factors". There is currently a lack of empirical research where information has been gathered from ERP providers. The research found is based on old theories for which factors contribute positively and negatively to an implementation process. These theories are being used by most researchers in their studies regarding the implementation of the ERP system. This study therefore focuses on ERP suppliers' perspectives on negative contributing factors in implementing ERP systems. Major emphasis has been placed on collecting factors from ERP providers in order that at a later stage in the study they can address the factors mentioned in previous studies to find relationships and possible deviations. The study used interviews as data collection method and five interviews have been conducted with experienced ERP providers. The result of the collected material from ERP providers identifies a number of critical factors that can be linked to factors from previous studies. Interestingly, the study also identified a number of factors that differ from previous studies. The conclusions that can be deduced from the study are that the implementation processes can be improved and become significantly more efficient with the help of the new insight into the problems that the ERP providers lifts up. Awareness of these negative contributing factors in implementing an ERP system contributes knowledge in the field of implementation processes, which in turn can be used by companies and individuals to facilitate and prevent the problems that may arise in such a process.
