Seduced and dying: the sympathetic trope of the fallen woman in early and mid-Victorian Britain, c. 1820-1870

Deacon, Deborah 30 August 2018 (has links)
In early and mid-Victorian Britain, men and women from all classes demonstrated a strong fascination with, and sympathy for, seduced and dying women. Though such women were unchaste or “fallen” women, they did not excite the same anxiety and condemnation as did other sexually transgressive women like prostitutes and adulteresses. This thesis demonstrates that the sympathetic trope of the seduced and dying woman in British culture from 1820 to 1870 was a combination of (and an interplay between) fiction and reality. Through a study of melodrama – a largely working-class genre – and “expert” literature – a predominantly middle-class genre, comprised of medical, social, religious and prescriptive writings – this thesis shows how the seduced and dying woman inspired sympathy both across and along class lines. Finally, an analysis of nineteenth-century newspaper accounts of “Seduction and Suicide” illustrates that, while this popular trope inspired sympathy for a certain kind of fallen woman – the feminine, passive and (most importantly) suffering and dying victim of seduction – it also distorted the reality of sexual fall, reinforced patriarchal understandings, and created an exclusive and unattainable standard of sympathy which normalized suicide for fallen women. / Graduate / 2019-08-24

A historical overview and theological evaluation of the necessity of the impeccability of Christ / Lazarus Edward Kanniah

Kanniah, Lazarus Edward January 2015 (has links)
The following study seeks to investigate the impeccability of Christ from a historical/theological position. Two camps emerge on either side of the debate: Those who hold to the posse non peccare view which is to say, ability not to sin, otherwise known as the peccability view and those who hold to the non posse peccare view which is to say inability to sin, otherwise known as the impeccability view. While both camps affirm the sinless perfection of Christ they oppose each other in whether as fully human He could have sinned if He wanted to. It boils down to a case of ‘could have but did not’ or ‘did not because He could not have’. It is the view of this thesis that the non posse peccare view squares with both historical and biblical theology. We argue in chapter two by surveying Church councils up to the present time pertinent to this theme to prove that the history of this issue matters in that it establishes the relationship between Christology and history and by inference a major impact upon many outcomes in Church history. Our aim was to prove that this historical error goes a long way in distorting the gospel message. In chapter three we survey and evaluate the position from a peccability viewpoint while, at the same time, entering and notarising our points of departure. We have there highlighted the arguments peccability theologians utilise to defend their view and have criticised such from our Dispensational theology. In chapter four we then assess and acknowledge the argument for impeccability by proving the necessity of it for the exoneration of His Person and gospel. In the summit of chapter five we have surveyed the field of Scripture to have the final say on this issue and concluded in favour of impeccability. / MA (Dogmatics), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2015

Thus, the present work if considers to evaluate the effect of the vegetal retardant use in different densities of sowing on the growth, components of yield, productivity and fallen plant index in the crop of the soybean to cultivate CD 209. The experiment was developed in the Technological Center Coopavel in the city of Cascavel PR. For in such a way, no tillage system was become fullfilled. The experimental design was arranged in randomized complete blocks, with four replications, in factorial outline (6X2), being the treatments gotten for the combination of six levels of the vegetal retardant Etil Trinexapac (0,0 0,2 0,4 0,6 0,8 and 1,0 L ha-1) and two densities of sowing (14 and 18 plants M-1). Evaluations with frequency of 14 days had been carried through, from the 21 days after the emergency (DAE) until the full bloom of the crop, getting themselves the diameter of stem and the height of canopy of the plants. Also three destructive collections to the 35 had been carried through, 70 and 100 DAE for attainment of dry matter in the different parts of the plant and leaf area. In the harvest the components of the yield had been evaluated, productivity and fallen plant index. The vegetal retardant and the densities of sowing had influenced directly in the height and the diameter of stem of the plants. For dry matter, components of the yield, productivity and fallen plant index did not have influence; however the leaf area were influenced by the sowing density / A soja apresenta notória importância na cadeia nacional de produção de grãos, atualmente é o principal produto agrícola brasileiro justificando investimentos em tecnologia visando o aumento da produtividade e redução dos fatores adversos à cultura. This latter is responsible for losses considerable of grains, since that difficulty a good deal the harvest, occur loss of yield. Thus, the present work if considers to evaluate the effect of the vegetal retardant trinexapac-ethyl, on reduction of the postage of the wheat CD 104, in an attempt to minimize problems caused at fallen plant index related on the manure spreading nitrogen on cover, as well as access the growth and productivity in response the nitrogen and on the application of vegetal retardants. The experiment was developed Experimental Station from COPACOL in the city of Cafelândia - PR. The experimental design was he of blocks at random, in factorial outline (2X6X6), being two levels of nitrogen on cover (40 and 80 kg ha-1) treatments gotten for the combination of six levels of the vegetal retardant 0.0; 0.2; 0.4; 0.6; 0.8; and 1.0 L ha-1) and six collection of plants [20, 35, 50, 65, 80 and 95 days after the emergence (DAE)], with four repetitions. During the conduct after 20 DAE, plans were collected for each 14 days about to ends of biometric analysis and growth. Each one was realized in a randomized way taking plants in 0,30 m in the tillage line, inside from parcel useful in each experimental parcel. In the harvest the components of the yield had been evaluated, productivity and fallen plant index. Trinexapac-ethyl reduces the height of plants and no influence the productivity of the wheat CD 104, but it showed - if effective into the control of fallen plant index, reducing possible losses on harvest. The levels of N applied on cover presented values positive into the increase from productivity of the wheat, by highlighting - if the use of 80 kg ha-1 / O trigo é uma cultura de alto risco, devido às condições ambientais e a incidência de outros fatores como pragas, doenças e acamamento.

Stupade soldater i Afghanistan omdebatterade / Fallen soldiers in Afghanistan is debateted

/
By military means to defend our realm where there is a direct threat tor our existence requires no more justification. Vilniaus kaip puolusio miesto mitas Ričardo Gavelio romane Vilniaus pokeris / Vilnius as a fallen city represented in the novel „Vilnius’ Poker“ by Ričardas Gavelis

Kvietkauskaitė, Erika 08 June 2005 (has links)
In this work, we have analysed the myth about Vilnius as a fallen city represented in the novel „Vilnius’ Poker“ by Ričardas Gavelis. We have looked in to the contemporary myth of Vilnius, searching for the myth of the city foundation and other ancient myths, which have been compared with the modern mythology of the city. The following analysis represents the discussion about the origin of city and some its’s problems in lithuanian culture, going deep into the myth of the Vilnius foundation and it‘s transformation in Ričardas Gavelis’ novel. One of the principal metaphors in the novel is the one showing Vilnius as a labyrinth. The fallen city and the maze take the vertical and horizontal meanings of space and the images in the novel. The characters are compared with archaic heroes, looking for survivals of the ancient myths. An individual is constructed as an absurd person. Their standpoint to God and to the city is estimating. The city is the manifestation of the modern myth, because now the myth can be everthing what is valuable to make narration.

An analysis of three works for wind band by David R. Gillingham : Heroes, lost and fallen ; Apocalyptic dreams ; and Cantus Laetus

McRoy, James William January 2003 (has links)
David R. Gillingham, born 1947, has established himself as one of today's leading contemporary composers. His current emphasis is on music for wind band, and to date he has over sixty published works for wind band and chamber winds and percussion, representing nearly twenty-five years of composition. Gillingham has received First Prize in the International Barlow Competition in Composition and First Prize in the National Association of Wind and Percussion Instructors Commissioning Contest. Gillingham's works for wind band are performed regularly across the globe by professional and school bands, and he currently has commissions in progress scheduled through 2006.The purpose of this study was to thoroughly examine and document a descriptive analysis of three of Gillingham's works for wind band in order to observe similarities and differences in his compositional style that might prove useful as a reference to prospective conductors and scholars of Gillingham's music. The three works include Heroes, Lost and Fallen (1989), Apocalyptic Dreams (1995) and Cantus Laetus (2000). Separate chapters contain the background and analysis of each work including a comprehensive erratum. An additional chapter includes a lengthy interview transcript covering Gillingham's complete background as a practicing musician and composer, his habits, practices, and attitudes toward composing and teaching. A complete works list of all Gillingham's compositions concludes the study. This list includes compositions in all mediums for which Gillingham has written. Each entry includes the following information: title, date, commission, current publication status, instrumentation, and first performance information. / School of Music

Oeuvre monstre, création informe / Monster work, a formless creation

El Abed, Nesrine 17 December 2013 (has links)
This study I entitled "Monster Work, a Formless Creation" is to be inscribed within a contemporary art research that deals with the idea of the extreme in relation to plastic phenomena, for the latter depend on the theory of form and on a great plasticity enhanced by personal creations that happily melt traditional sculptures with digital technology. As a matter of fact, combining the digital image, the clay and the video, with the monster, was a way to reach what is profound within formless and cruel works of art that are of painful and torn resemblances. The monstrous form is, thus, not reduced to a simple conscious significance, it transcribes an unambiguous discourse and the monster becomes the concept, par excellence, of my plastic practice. The work of art becomes connected to the "monstrum" and the image is inherently endowed with a visual power (in French "monstrative"). Every image, be it digital, photographic or video graphic is a monstrance. Sculpture would be the representation of the fallen body or the image of death that appears in Narcissus Mirror and that is no longer related to any form of resemblance, showing a reflection that grasps the Mask of Medusa. This research that is focusing on formlessness serves to dispel the myths under violent and rugged practices supported by a theoretical research based on the philosophy of Georges Bataille as well as that of anthropologists and phenomenologists, and through their thoughts, the work brings the different experiences of extremes, excess and loss to the dimension of sacrifice.
