DOMESTIC PIETY IN THE MINISTRY OF JOHN ANGELL JAMES

Wright, Jeffery Steven 30 May 2013 (has links)
ABSTRACT DOMESTIC PIETY IN THE MINISTRY OF JOHN ANGELL JAMES Jeffery Steven Wright, Ph.D. The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, 2013 Chair: Dr. Timothy Paul Jones Chapter 1 introduces John Angell James as a person worthy of recognition and research. James's godly character, pastoral leadership and worldwide influence, unheard of to most except the astute historian, presents the foundation for the significance of the study. Additionally, a definition of terms is given in order to help the reader contextualize James's rhetoric. Chapter 2 gives an introduction into the childhood and ministry call of John Angell James. Understanding the historical background in which James formulated his conviction toward domestic piety is paramount. Thorough consideration is given in this chapter to major societal movements and historical issues that made the world in which James lived. Chapter 3 examines James's ministry at Carrs Lane, his personal suffering, his passion for writing and work at shaping congregationalism. James was not only being challenged and shaped by external world events, but every day he was influenced by his church ministry and his times of great suffering. It was not long before his passion for the family and its immortal purpose would become the focal point of many of his writings. Chapter 4 examines James's exhortations regarding domestic piety through his writings and sermons. James had much to say throughout his life directed to fathers, mothers, sons, and daughters. This chapter also demonstrates through James's preaching and writings how his familial focus developed a thorough understanding and ministry practice for parents. Chapter 5 carefully analyzes James's integration of domestic piety and evangelism. James unapologetically admonished domestic piety and his ministry bore the fruit of this emphasis. Chapter 6 offers practical implications that will aid pastors and church leaders in their local church ministries. James's life and ministry in many ways serves as an exemplary model for pastors to follow. There are principles that James embraced that are transferrable to today's pastors who find themselves in similar situations.

For that purpose we define as the primary hypothesis of our research to check which are the main theological-pastoral prospective of the Church to guide the experience of Christian marriage, given the unstable and complex contemporary reality. In order to do what was proposed in this primary hypothesis, we established three secondary hypotheses, corresponding to each of the chapters in this way: a) to critically analyze the contemporary reality from pre-established principles, showing how it can interfere with the way of being and thinking of the people, especially within the marriage and family life, requiring from the Church in its mission of evangelization, responses to new emerging aspirations; b) to present the fundamental notes of Christian marriage, basing on the biblical and theological foundations of this; c) to detect the major theological-pastoral prospective of the Church to guide the experience of Christian marriage, given the unstable and complex contemporary reality, based on what we presented in the previous two chapters. We believe that the importance of these considerations consist in the fact that we have to continually reaffirm the fundamental human and Christian values of marriage and family, especially at a time when we experience a phenomenon called change of season. The Church, in its mission to evangelize, cannot ignore the changing needs and challenges that people experience in their marriage and family life every day. Fidelity to Jesus Christ and sensitivity with the joys and hopes, sorrows and sufferings of men and women of our time, are two sides of the same coin that the Church cannot ignore. At the end of our research we concluded that the main theological-pastoral prospective that the Church must implement in the orientation of marriage and family life are as follows: the need to examine in depth though faith and reason its ecclesial comprehension of the reality of marriage and family; to promote a sincere pastoral conversion, from a mere maintenance pastoral to an authentically missionary pastoral; need to strengthen and innovate a missionary Family Ministry / O objetivo central desta pesquisa é refletir sobre o matrimônio cristão na realidade atual.

Van Tonder, Barend Jacobus 30 October 2007 (has links)
Current collective church services, where families in totality are coming together although the focus only falls on adults, do not address today’s post modern families. For this reason two tragic routes were began to be followed within the church:

Parents with small children began to give up trying to pressure their children to attend services because they themselves realized that it was not working for them, and started to go to church without their children, while parents with teenagers allowed their teens to attend services of other churches where they felt that their needs were met. Parents who still tried to pressure their children into going to services with them, started to experience the tension surrounding that within their families as well as in themselves.

Congregations started creating generative services where the different generations were served separately from each other, within the premise of specialized ministry on the level of each unique generation.

The result of this was disastrous for families as well as the church in general. On the one hand family members were spiritually alienated from each other and covenant families were tore to pieces; on the other hand covenant families were alienated from their own Christian tradition and church foundation, while the role of parents as spiritual mentors of their children were minimilised. Because of this, more and more families began to plead for the addressing of their needs to be ministered to as a whole within the church service and to worship together, while covenant parents began to demand to be once again empowered as primary spiritual mentors of their children. Consequently the urgent need within the church had arisen for the implementation of family ministry, and especially family services, where families in totality can effectively be ministered to so that the needs of each family member will be met. Principles for such inter generative services, as well as sermons to post modern families within that context, is necessary to make such a cross generational ministry successful. Precisely this is the focus of this study. / Dissertation (MA (Research in Practical Theology))--University of Pretoria, 2007. / Practical Theology / MA / unrestricted

Smit, Gert Paul 11 1900 (has links)
Text in Afrikaans / Die samelewing heleef tans groot veranderinge. / The church and family are both affected by the immense changes in society. Family needs change under the pressure of these changes. Among the greatest family needs are a relationship with depth, acknowledgement from fellow-man, emotional security and interpersonal intimacy. The church must recognise these needs and address them. A ministry to families must firstly rediscover God's plan for the family; secondly the family must be seen as an ecosystemic unity; thirdly development and emotional phases in the family must be understood and managed. I used the cell church model as a basis to develop a structure for family ministry. I found the cell church model to be essentially a relationship model. I came to the conclusion that the cell church model has the potential to be a genuine home for family; to be a basis from which the family can be built up and from which the family can be equipped for their calling. Thus, I found the cell church model to be a possible model for family ministry. / Philosophy, Practical & Systematic Theology / M. Th. (Practical Theology)

‘n Gemeenskapsgerigte model vir geloofsvorming van tieners in die verbondsgesin deur middel van simbole en rituele (Afrikaans)

De Wet, Dirk Cornelis 02 October 2003 (has links)
The family is the most important building system in the church, the society and the whole world. The family is also the cradle and even the womb of the symbolic way in religious education. Almost all families stay in a community where interactions of faith take place. Teenagers leave the church because there are not enough exciting activities in the community to be part of a transformation process for a better life. For that reason the paradigm in this research emphasises an event-driven teenage and family ministry within the community. That means a ministry that accentuates processes, people and relations. Faith development cannot find a place outside the relationship of human beings. Relationship is the password to understanding and the most natural form of relationship is the family. The covenantal family is the most important building system in the church, the society and the whole world. To develop a model for teenage and family ministry for this purpose, the research will emphasise practicing more than theorising, although the dialogue between these two factors in practical theology is of utmost importance. Better relationships within the family, congregation and the community needs better communication. For that reason symbols and rituals are a necessary part of the whole process of teenage and family ministry which is community-directed. God acts within the lives of individuals and groups, but planned the family as the most important unit for interaction. No religion can be without a God and no religion can be without people. All people are born into one or another kind of family and have a God-given need to be part of a group even when ostracised by families or the society. The community of faith never lives in a vacuum - it is always in the midst of cultural reality which is a powerful influence. The faith of this community is embedded in the context of symbols, rituals and narratives. To be busy with practical theology, with this paradigm in mind, needs a threefold exegesis: an exegesis of the Bible, an exegesis of the culture, and an exegesis of the self and the community. Strengthening the inner life of churches and their relation to their immediate communities should be the first priority of the leaders of churches. Churches have a covenant responsibility to help people develop and sustain strong and healthy families. / Dissertation (PhD)--University of Pretoria, 2004. / Practical Theology / unrestricted

The mission of the church as family: implementing the ecclesiology of the African Synod (1994) in the Catholic Diocese of Masvingo

Basera, Michael 02 1900 (has links)
Bibliography: leaves 221-244 / The purpose of this thesis is to examine the mission of the ‘Church as family’ and to explore its implications in terms of levels of inclusion and participation of church members in the Catholic Diocese of Masvingo. The background of the study is the 1994 African Synod that suggests the ecclesiology of the mission of the ‘Church as family.’ The study helps the Catholic Diocese of Masvingo to evaluate the implementation of the ideal of the mission of the ‘Church as family’ and draw implications for nuclear, single parent, child-headed, reconstituted and extended families within the church. The study explores Shorter’s culture model to examine how cultural practices, symbols, values and belief systems can be used as an analytic framework for the human dimension of the church. A qualitative research methodology that involves 36 participants in semi-structured interviews, three focus group discussions in urban, semi-urban and rural parishes and participant observation was used to collect data from parishioners, priests and religious of the Catholic Diocese of Masvingo. The study reveals that each family type contributes to Evangelisation as proclamation of the Good News and inculturation differently thereby enriching the ideal of the mission of the ‘Church as family.’ Furthermore, the study shows that guilds, associations and commissions help to strengthen families through spiritual, psychological, social and economic support. Findings also indicate that the Trinity is the theological foundation of the family and it finds acceptance in African communal setup. Family types in Masvingo Diocese are analysed using the notion of the Trinity to show that dignity, equality and respect among family types can be used to strengthen the ideal of the mission of the ‘Church as family.’ At pastoral level, economic, social and cultural obstacles to family ministry stand as a challenge to the full implementation and realisation of the ideal of the mission of the ‘Church as family’. In the light of the research, recommendations for mission strategies were suggested at different levels that involve Diocesan administration, priests, religious, catechists and parish leaders. Recommendations for further researches were also suggested for areas that seem to be important yet outside the scope of this study. The theological, pastoral, and cultural issues raised in this study combine to help the Catholic Diocese of Masvingo to become an authentic expression of the mission of the ‘Church as family’ of God. / Christian Spirituality, Church History and Missiology / D.
