"O império dos sonhos - narrativas proféticas, sebastianismo e messianismo brigantino" / The empire of dreams: prophetic narratives, Sebastianismo and Bragança's Messianism

Lima, Luis Filipe Silverio 30 September 2005 (has links)
This thesis analises the prophetic dreams narratives in Modern Porugal between 1600 and 1750. Its goal was to investigate how the main onirical themes, the most recurrent dreams, the interpretations and readings of biblical dreams were constituted. It was sought to perceive what were the perceptions of dreams (and prophecies) which sustained and were present in the portuguese narratives, observing the repertory of onirical references and texts and its circulation. Assuming that dream narratives had a capital role in the formulation of Sebastianism and after that, Brigantine Messianism, the links between the dreams and these movements and prophetic messianic beliefs were observed, aiming to understand the diferent political projecs in and for Portugal during this period.

Investigating the impact of a LEGO-based, engineering-oriented curriculum compared to an inquiry-based curriculum on fifth graders' content learning of simple machines

Marulcu, Ismail January 2010 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Michael Barnett / This mixed method study examined the impact of a LEGO<super>TM</super>-based, engineering-oriented curriculum compared to an inquiry-based curriculum on fifth graders' content learning of simple machines. This study takes a social constructivist theoretical stance that science learning involves learning scientific concepts and their relations to each other. From this perspective, students are active participants, and they construct their conceptual understanding through the guidance of their teacher. With the goal of better understanding the use of engineering education materials in classrooms the National Academy of Engineering and National Research Council in the book "Engineering in K-12 Education" conducted an in-depth review of the potential benefits of including engineering in K-12 schools as (a) improved learning and achievement in science and mathematics, (b) increased awareness of engineering and the work of engineers, (c) understanding of and the ability to engage in engineering design, (d) interest in pursuing engineering as a career, and (e) increased technological literacy (Katehi, Pearson, & Feder, 2009). However, they also noted a lack of reliable data and rigorous research to support these assertions. Data sources included identical written tests and interviews, classroom observations and videos, teacher interviews, and classroom artifacts. To investigate the impact of the design-based simple machines curriculum compared to the scientific inquiry-based simple machines curriculum on student learning outcomes, I compared the control and the experimental groups' scores on the tests and interviews by using ANCOVA. To analyze and characterize the classroom observation videotapes, I used Jordan and Henderson's (1995) method and divide them into episodes. My analyses revealed that the design-based Design a People Mover: Simple Machines unit was, if not better, as successful as the inquiry-based FOSS Levers and Pulleys unit in terms of students' content learning. I also found that students in the engineering group outperformed students in the control group in regards to their ability to answer open-ended questions when interviewed. Implications for students' science content learning and teachers' professional development are discussed. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2010. / Submitted to: Boston College. Evaluation of power consumption and trade-offs in 5G mobile communications networks

Alhumaima, Raad January 2017 (has links)
In this thesis, components and parameters based power models (PMs) are produced to measure the power consumption (PC) of cloud radio access network (CRAN) architecture. In components PM, the power figure of each component within C-RAN is evaluated. After, this model is parametrised such that the computation complexity of each component is converted to a straightforward, but accurate method, called parameterised PM. This model compares cooling and total PC of traditional LTE architecture with C-RAN. This comparison considered different parameters such as, utilised bandwidth, number of antenna, base band units (BBUs) and remote radio heads (RRHs). This model draws about 33% reduction in power. Next, this PC model is updated to serve and exhibit the cost of integrating software defined networks (SDNs) with C-RAN. Alongside, modelling the power cost of the control plane units in the core network (CN), such as serving gateway (SGW), packet gateway (PGW) and mobility management entity (MME). Although there is power cost, the proposed model shows the directions to mitigate it. Consequently, a simplified PM is proposed for virtualisation based C-RAN. In this model, the power cost of server virtualisation by hosting several virtual machines (VMs) is shown, in a time and cost effective way. The total reduction in the PC was about 75%, due to short-cutting the number of active servers in the network. Alongside, the latency cost due to such technique is modelled. Finally, to enable efficient virtualisation technology, live migrating the VMs amongst the servers is vital. However, this advantageous situation is concurrent with VM's migration time and power cost. Therefore, a model is proposed to calculate the power cost of VM's live migration, and shows the effect of such decision upon the total PC of the network/C-RAN. The proposed work converts the complexity of other proposed PMs, to a simplified and costless method. Concurrently, the time cost is added to the imposed virtualisation's time cost to formulate the total delay expected prior to these techniques' execution.

Case Study of Teachers' Current Strategies to Teach Grammar and Writing

Hubbard, Cara Lisa 01 January 2016 (has links)
In a southeastern state school district, 23.2% of the students did not meet the 80% passing requirement on the 2014 state’s writing assessment. Research for writing and grammar instruction is extensive, yet many teachers struggle with finding effective instructional strategies. The purpose of this instrumental case study was to explore the instructional strategies used at 7 schools to teach writing and grammar skills to Grade 5 students and to identify instructional gaps. Howard Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences and Lev Vygotsky’s theory of cognitive development together provided a theoretical foundation that emphasizes constructive social learning strategies as well as attention to multiple intelligences. A simple review of background data was conducted on the district’s writing curriculum guide to outline instructional strategies and test data to document scores of the fifth grade students at the 9 elementary schools. The primary source of data came from semi-structured interviews of 6 teaching and learning specialist assistant principals and a fifth grade teacher, who altogether represented 7 of the 9 elementary schools. The interview questions elicited participant perceptions about current writing instructional strategies and resources used with Grade 5 students. Typological data analysis revealed 5 themes of collaboration of teachers, vertical teaming, test format, vocabulary, and writing across the curriculum. These instructional strategies were included in the resulting professional development project. This project has implications for positive social change by increasing the number of teachers at the lower performing schools improving implementation of instructional strategies, and improving students’ writing test scores.

The Effect of a Nutrition Program on Knowledge of Nutrition and Nutrition Attitudes and Practices of Fifth Grade Students in Granite School District

Sorensen, Nancy Brubaker 01 May 1976 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to evaluate a six week nutrition program in terms of its effect on nutrition knowledge and its effect on food practices and attitudes. A survey of the dietary food intake was also made. Fifth grade students in Granite School District, Salt Lake City, Utah, were the participants. A pretest and a postest were used to determine the effect of the program. The tests showed that cognitive knowledge increased in many areas, attitudes became more positive and there was little improvement in dietary intake. Dietary intake was low in fruits, vegetables and milk but adequate in meat.

Towards a Fifth Gospel via Schillebeeckx and Solle

Harvey, Ann-Marie, res.cand@acu.edu.au January 2003 (has links)
The aim of this thesis, Towards ajifth gospel via Schillebeeclx and Solle, is a search for God and God's gospel. It is a quest in which I combine Edward Schillebeeckx's belief that Christian life is a fifth gospel and Dorothee Solle's praxis-orientated theology into a contrapuntal theological conversation. I argue that through each theologian's vision of Christian life a theological and hermeneutical framework is established within which men and women of faith can interpret change and prepare the world and church for God's transforming newness. The scope of this thesis identifies a life-giving Christianity by investigating common theological themes in the work of Schillebeeckx and Solle. On the basis of the insights of both theologians I argue that all believers are called to critically reinterpret belief in the God of Jesus, that human experience is the horizon for reflection and interpretation. That mystics and prophets communicate God's saving love within an ethic of responsibility for this world, and that when Christian communities engage in

"Femteklassares" syn på teknik : En undersökning om flickors och pojkars tankar om teknik och om dessa skiljer sig åt / "Fifhtgraders" approach to technology :   A study of girls´ and boys´ ideas about technology and if they differ

Mollmyr, Ester January 2009 (has links)
Technological interests such as cars and engines are also associated with men. The purpose of this study was to study 11-year-old's perception and attitudes towards technology and if there is difference between boys´ and girls´. 40 pupils in 19 groups of two and two (two teams of three) carried out a gender-neutral technology task. The challenge was to develop the optimal crisppackage in form and function. There were three types of groups based on gender (boy/boy; boy/girl; girl/girl). Data collection was based on observations by the author in which teamwork and concentration was graded as good / neither / poor and time of implementation was measured in minutes. All participants finally answered a questionnaire with 18 questions, where the relationship to the subject of technology was explored.</p><p>The results show that 11-year-olds generally have a good view of technology and they think it is exciting and important. In this age, there are also many, both girls´ and boys´, who are prepared to have a technical profession such as engineering in the future. It is also possible to deduce from the results the gender power structure that surrounds the pupils in their homes. While the majority of the girls´ replied that in the future they will clean and cook in the household, the boys´ replied that they will fix the car, shovel snow or put up shelves. The study also shows the differences between girls´ and boys´ way of working. The groups showed a similar final outcome but there are significant differences in efficiency. The statistical analysis shows that the girls were much more effective than the other group formations.</p>

Regularity and Nearness Theorems for Families of Local Lie Groups

January 2011 (has links)
In this work, we prove three types of results with the strategy that, together, the author believes these should imply the local version of Hilbert's Fifth problem. In a separate development, we construct a nontrivial topology for rings of map germs on Euclidean spaces. First, we develop a framework for the theory of (local) nonstandard Lie groups and within that framework prove a nonstandard result that implies that a family of local Lie groups that converge in a pointwise sense must then differentiability converge, up to coordinate change, to an analytic local Lie group, see corollary 6.3.1. The second result essentially says that a pair of mappings that almost satisfy the properties defining a local Lie group must have a local Lie group nearby, see proposition 7.2.1. Pairing the above two results, we get the principal standard consequence of the above work which can be roughly described as follows. If we have pointwise equicontinuous family of mapping pairs (potential local Euclidean topological group structures), pointwise approximating a (possibly differentiably unbounded) family of differentiable (sufficiently approximate) almost groups, then the original family has, after appropriate coordinate change, a local Lie group as a limit point. (See corollary 7.2.1 for the exact statement.) The third set of results give nonstandard renditions of equicontinuity criteria for families of differentiable functions, see theorem 9.1.1. These results are critical in the proofs of the principal results of this paper as well as the standard interpretations of the main results here. Following this material, we have a long chapter constructing a Hausdorff topology on the ring of real valued map germs on Euclidean space. This topology has good properties with respect to convergence and composition. See the detailed introduction to this chapter for the motivation and description of this topology.

Pre-accession Aid Of European Union The Prospects Of Turkey

Demir, Sirma 01 August 2003 (has links) (PDF)
This thesis calculates the amount of pre-accession aid which will be given Turkey when Turkey starts accession negotiations with EU. By using Poland&amp / #8217 / s receipts from pre-accession financial transfers of EU during its accession negotiations, the study makes expectation about Turkey&amp / #8217 / s pre-accession aid. This thesis also attempts to ask the reality of this calculated value by looking at the budgetary situation of EU during Turkey&amp / #8217 / s pre-accession period.
