Do Banks' Dividends Signal Their Financial Health?

Zheng, Yi 08 1900 (has links)
This paper examines the relation between banks' dividends and their future financial health. Using banks' Nonperforming Loans Ratio, Loan Loss Provision Ratio, and Z-score as proxies for their financial health, I show that there is a strong positive relation between banks' dividends lagged by one quarter and their financial health in the current quarter. This main finding continues to hold following several additional tests, including the application of an instrumental variable approach, the use of change in dividends as the key independent variable, the exclusion of banks that are subject to stress test, the addition of macroeconomic variables, the exclusion of too-big-to-fail banks, and the exclusion of non-depository banks. I also find that the positive relation between banks' dividends and their future financial health is more pronounced for banks with a higher degree of opacity, a lower Tier 1 capital ratio, and during the 2007-2009 financial crisis. This paper contributes to three strands of the finance literature, including the Risk Reduction Hypothesis of dividend signaling in corporate finance, bank dividend policies, and the determinants of banks' financial stability. First, I show that there is a positive relation between banks' dividends lagged by one quarter and their financial health in the current quarter, also meaning that banks' dividends are negatively associated with their future risk conditions. This finding is consistent with the Risk Reduction Hypothesis regarding dividend signaling. Second, Floyd, Li, and Skinner (2015) propose a new idea that banks use dividends to signal financial health, and they rely on this idea to explain why banks have a higher and more stable propensity to pay dividends vis-à-vis industrials during the past several decades. My finding that banks' dividends are positively associated with their future financial health empirically supports this idea proposed by Floyd, Li, and Skinner (2015). Last, to my knowledge, no prior study has attempted to extensively detect a direct relation between banks' dividends and their financial stability. I fill this gap by investigating whether this relation exists. I show that banks' dividends have significantly positive explanatory power on their future financial stability, as proxied by three risk conditions.

The Mediating Role of Payout in the Relationship Between Private Foundations and Grantee Organizations' Financial Health

Kim, Angie 01 January 2015 (has links)
Although private foundations are assumed to be beneficial, their impact on grantee organizations is not well understood. This quantitative research explored how private, nonoperating foundations influence grantees' financial capacity to pursue their missions. Principal-agent theory was applied to rationalize foundations' social good purpose, along with subsidy theory of public charities' need for capital accumulation, thus comprising a unique framework for identifying pathways of relationships amongst influencer variables of foundations' operating characteristics; the outcome of grantees' months of unrestricted, liquid net assets (MULNA); and the mediator of foundations' payout rate. Multiple regression and indirect effects analyses of data on 612 cases from NCCS and tax returns revealed that the sector focus and characteristics of certain types of funders (i.e., oldest, largest, smallest, volunteer and professionally staffed, aggressive and average charitable spenders, and arts-focused foundations) affected payout behavior. In addition, large foundations' payout rate influenced MULNA, especially among financially strong grantees. Finally, payout mediated the association between age and MULNA among the largest foundations, and between sector focus and MULNA among the oldest foundations. This research contributes to the discourse on foundations' effectiveness in three ways: (a) associations were significant among segmented data, thus affirming the usefulness of examining specific types of foundations; (b) wealth distribution by the largest and oldest foundations was of tangible importance to their grantees, knowledge of which can be used in grant decision making and in informing policies on payout; and (c) principal-agent theory can be applied to hold foundations accountable to public interests.

Rozhodování uživatele účetní závěrky o finanční pozici podniku / Decision making of the user of the financial statements about the financial position of the enterprise

VALDMANOVÁ, Dominika January 2019 (has links)
The financial health of a company is important for the decision-making of a financial statement user for various reasons. It may be important for future investors to decide if they can invest in the company. In addition, it may also be important for a bank to decide whether the company can provide a credit. However, there are other cases where the user needs to know if the company is financially health. For this evaluation, there are selected the methods used to detect and evaluate the manipulation of financial statements. As these methods are selected the CFEBT model, the Beneish model and the Jones model of non-discretion accrual. Creditworthy models are used to determine whether the company is making any value for the future and there is any danger of bankruptcy. The creditworthiness index, the Tamari model and the IN05 model are selected as these models. In the diploma thesis, these methods are applied in six companies. There are the parent company named ABC a.s. and its five subsidiaries named with Roman numerals I-V. Names of companies are invention. In the practical part of the diploma thesis, the companies are analysed according to individual models and then there is determined the influence of subsidiaries on the parent company according the correlation coefficient. In the end the hypotheses are confirmed or refuted. The first hypothesis says that the whole consolidation unit is financially health. The second hypothesis assumes that the results of subsidiaries influence the results of parent company positively.
