Indigenous knowledge in participatory mapping of artisanal fishing zones :|ba case study of Angoche district, Nampula Province in Mozambique.

Indigenous knowledge use in identifying artisanal fishing zones is the core issue in this dissertation. It seeks, on one hand, to show the potentially of this knowledge and to establish the relationships between indigenous and scientific knowledge in fishing zones identification and, on other the hand, it is also a trend for alleviating those fishing zones surrounding beaches, estuaries and bays highly exploited by artisanal fishermen. Pushing artisanal fishermen upward offshore and/or into the open sea, they will fish more quality and high economic value fish contributing to enhance their income. By so doing, artisanal fishermen will uplift their living standard and, at the same time, they will contribute to sustainable artisanal fisheries management. Angoche District in Nampula province, north of Mozambique is the study area. The study was carried out to describe the logical sequence underlying on the process of identifying artisanal fishing zones using indigenous knowledge. The relationship between indigenous and scientific knowledge is treated with particular attention. The nature of the study is descriptive and analytical based on qualitative and quantitative data. The method used for data collection was face-to-face interviews using structured and semi-structured open-ended questions. Data on socioeconomic, traditional and cultural practices, technological and climate characteristics were collected, analyzed and discussed. Factors underlying artisanal fishing zones were studied. Spatial and non-spatial information for artisanal fishing zones identification was recorded applying Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and, later, processed and analyzed employing Geographical Information Systems (GIS). Finally, a map showing the localization and distribution of the identified fishing zones in the study area was produced. Results from the research show that identification of fishing zones offshore or open sea can be done simply based on local indigenous knowledge. The GIS technology employment facilitates the inclusion of indigenous knowledge into other knowledge which can be used for local decision making. Fly fishing and tourism : a sustainable rural community development strategy for Nsikeni ?

Most rural communities, such as Nsikeni area under the Mabandla Tribal Authority (MTA) in the Eastern Cape (former Transkei), are located in apartheid-created 'homelands'. These rural areas have large human populations that depend on natural resources, but, they do not derive full benefits from natural resource use. This research study examines the socio-economic status and the Nsikeni community people's perceptions on developing the potential for fly fishing under the concept of community-based resource management (CBRM) strategies. The research attempts to assess the Nsikeni community's resource assets in the form of rivers and related infrastructure together with their human resource and to obtain knowledge and perceptions of available potential in relation to fly fishing. Resistance and representation : the organization of protest by subsistence and recreational fisherman during the FIFA World Cup 2010.

This study explores the ways in which a group of local fishermen in Durban understand and negotiate their categorical exclusion from a public space. Several months prior to the FIFA World Cup 2010 in South Africa, three piers on the Durban beachfront were closed for upgrading. The fishermen had used two of these piers for nearly three decades, but when they were re-opened, access for fishermen was no longer allowed. Working in the constructionist paradigm and within the field of Cultural Studies, this study describes the fishermen as engaged in the politics of signification through the organisation of public action. To explore their understandings I applied a qualitative, mostly ethnographic approach, and focused particularly on those fishermen who fish on the beachfront and are active in the KwaZulu-Natal Subsistence Fishermen’s Forum (KZNSFF), a body that represents the fishermen in the public sphere. The study shows that the fishermen are a heterogeneous group who understand their exclusion in different ways. This variety and complexity of understandings in effect works against collective action and posed a challenge to the leadership of the KZNSFF who sought to construct a coherent collective action frame. Drawing on Social Movement theory, two public protests in which the fishermen negotiated their exclusion were among the central focuses of this study. The first was held during the World Cup and organised by KZNSFF. The other protest was less coordinated and held after the World Cup. Both protests are analysed through comparison, and indicate the importance of access to resources of leadership. The role of the media in effective Social Movement Organisation (SMO) is discussed in terms of ‘media standing’ and the legitimisation of actions and position of speakers. Further, it is argued that the presence of democratic institutions does not necessarily lead to democratic decision-making as civil society is often demobilised by political society. Additional to public protests, the fishermen negotiated their exclusion in the letters to the editor section of local press. Argumentative discourse analysis is applied in the analysis of a sample whereby strategies of othering are identified. A retrospective analysis of shark catches made by pelagic longliners off the east coast of South Africa and biology and life history of shortfin mako shark, Isurus oxyrinchus.

Oceanic pelagic shark species are under threat worldwide as fishing effort increases and they are taken as both targeted and bycatch. It is widely recognized that the life history characteristics of sharks make them inherently susceptible to overexploitation and as a result many shark-directed fisheries have collapsed. It is therefore essential that good-quality data are collected and analyzed in order to provide fisheries managers with the right information to manage these species sustainably. South Africa has a pelagic longline fishery which includes tuna-, swordfish-, and shark-directed vessels. This study analyzed logbook (1998 – 2010) and observer data (2002 – 2010) provided by the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries in order to assess the catch composition and standardized catch-per-unit-effort (CPUE) of sharks captured as both targeted catch and bycatch. The study area consisted of four zones moving east of the 20°E meridian: the Agulhas Bank (20°E – 24°E), South Coast (25°E – 29°E), East Coast 1 (30°E – 32.8°E), and East Coast 2 (32.9°E – 36.5°E). The majority of fishing effort targeted at tuna was focused on the Agulhas Bank and consisted of foreign vessels which operated over the winter months, whereas local vessels targeted swordfish with consistent year-round effort along the upper east coast. Sharks made up 13% of total catches according to logbook data and catch composition was dominated by blue shark (Prionace glauca) and shortfin mako shark (Isurus oxyrinchus). Observer data identified a larger number of shark species than shown by logbooks, and notably, the crocodile shark (Pseudocarcharias kamoharai) made up 22.5% of shark bycatch on swordfish-directed vessels operating along the upper east coast. In addition, the observer data showed that although blue and mako shark dominated catches in the Agulhas Bank and South coast zones, carcharhinid sharks were more prevalent further east. Generalized linear models explained 54% of the variation in CPUE of shark bycatch, with year and target species being the two most important explanatory variables. The standardized CPUE index based on logbook data suggested a slightly increasing shark abundance trend between 1998 and 2010, but conversely, the index based on observer data suggested a decline between 2002 and 2010. Assuming that the observer data best reflected the actual CPUE trend (i.e. a declining trend), the increasing trend shown by logbooks over the same period most likely stems from initial under-reporting of shark capture events by skippers, followed by improved reporting in later years, thus masking the declining trend. Catch by target species revealed that swordfish vessels caught significantly more sharks per 1000 hooks than tuna vessels. The shortfin mako shark was one of the most common bycatch species, and also the primary target species of the shark-directed fishery. Generalized linear models of shortfin mako shark CPUE using the delta method produced similar trends than models of total shark bycatch; i.e. trends based on logbook data appeared stable but observer data showed a declining trend over time. Shortfin mako sharks were more abundant in the Agulhas Bank and South coast zones than along the East coast. A total of 817 shortfin mako shark samples were collected onboard a South African shark-directed pelagic longline vessel operating out of Cape Town and by the KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board bather protection nets, set close inshore. Sharks collected inshore (from nets) were significantly larger than those collected offshore. More males than females were collected from the nets (2.3 males : 1 female), whereas the ratio for offshore samples was 1.1 : 1. Age and growth parameters were estimated from 89 sectioned vertebral samples consisting of 43 females and 46 males ranging in size from 90 cm to 299.4 cm fork length (FL). Annual band-pair deposition was assumed and growth was analyzed by fitting 3-parameter von Bertalanffy and Gompertz growth models. Parameter estimates for the Gompertz model were: K = 0.152 year¯¹ for males and 0.127 yearˉ¹ for females; L0 = 85 cm; L∞ = 295 cm for males and 315 cm for females; and longevity was 17 and 21 years for males and females respectively. Estimates for the von Bertalanffy model were: K = 0.08 yearˉ¹ for both sexes; L0 = 85 cm; L∞ = 354 cm for males and 321 cm for females; and longevity was 34 and 31 years for males and females respectively. Using these data, age and length at 50% maturity were calculated at 7 years and 199.1 cm FL for males, and 14 years and 252.8 cm for females. Litter size was in agreement with previous studies (9 to 14 pups). The gestation period was not estimated but parturition may be in late winter to spring. The stomach contents of 817 sharks showed that shortfin mako sharks are opportunistic feeders; elasmobranchs dominated in stomachs collected from sharks caught in nets near the shore (%F = 63.54%) whereas shark stomachs collected from the offshore contained mainly teleosts (70%). Length-frequency analyses revealed that large and reproductively active shortfin mako sharks were more common along the upper east coast and in the inshore environment, whereas juveniles and subadults preferred the oceanic environment, particularly over the Agulhas Bank and South Coast zones. Making craftsmanship visible as a source of social-ecological resilience : From the Swedish Arctic to the Stockholm Archipelago: Sami duodji and Baltic small scale fishing

Craftsmanship is recognised as a source of practical wisdom that can inform sustainable management and use of natural resources. However, there are many outstanding questions about how the skills and tacit knowledge embedded in craftsmanship can facilitate social-ecological resilience for sustainability. It has also proved difficult to access and articulate the knowledge embedded in craftsmanship. With this study I explore the skill and tacit knowledge components of craftsmanship as a repository of cultural-ecological memory through two case studies: the duodji, or handicrafts, produced by a Sámi craftswoman living in Jokkmokk, Sweden, and the fishing style of a fisherman in the Stockholm archipelago. As such, the research has two main aims: 1) to understand how the skills and tacit knowledge embedded in craftsmanship function as carriers of cultural-ecological memory; 2) to explore ways of mobilising and capturing these knowledge types by making them visible through the use of visual methodologies like photography. The research highlights the value of the accumulated knowledge and the portfolio of skills that are components of craft practices. Visual methods, in particular photo elicitation, invite participants to link their craftsmanship to their culture and identity. In doing so, visual methods contribute a new perspective on the role of craftsmanship as a carrier of cultural-ecological memory because the craft practices themselves become reservoirs of tacit knowledge and embodied skills that can be drawn upon in responding and adapting to changes or disturbances in the social-ecological system.

Ecological niche metrics of coral reef piscivorous fishes: The effects of fishing revealed through stable isotope analyses

Coral reefs are highly complex and also highly threatened ecosystems. Population growth and the unsustainable use of coral reefs have resulted in 55% of the world’s reefs being considered degraded. Fishing, the primary ‘local’ threat on most reefs, has altered the composition of most reef communities. As a result, very few pristine coral reefs remain. Typically, coral reef research is done via underwater visual censuses, providing abundance estimates but no indication of trophic interactions, therefore we know relatively little about the structure of intact reef food webs. Understanding how human activities affect trophic structure and feeding interactions among resident reef species may be important for coral reef conservation. Here, I apply stable isotope analysis to coral reef piscivorous fishes from Kiritimati (Republic of Kiribati), the world’s largest atoll. I examine dietary niche metrics of five focal species (Cephalopholis argus, Cephalopholis urodeta, Aphareus furca, Lutjanus bohar, and Lutjanus fulvus) and of the piscivore functional group as a whole, across an anthropogenic disturbance gradient that results from the atoll’s heavily skewed geographic population distribution. Using bootstrapped stable carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotope values, controlled for body size effects and analysed with Bayesian methods using the SIAR (Stable Isotope Analysis in R) program, I provide evidence of isotopic niche differentiation in C. argus and L. fulvus relative to other sampled species in terms of niche width metrics and mean δ13C and δ15N values. I also analyse the effect of fishing pressure at an individual level (controlling for body size effects on stable isotope signatures for each species), population level (accounting for observed differences in body size distributions across the fishing pressure gradient for each species), and the ‘community’ level (accounting for body size and relative abundance differences of the five piscivores across the fishing pressure gradient). These metrics reveal species-specific changes in niche metrics of three of the focal species at the individual level: C. urodeta, showed regionally distinct niche width metrics but no apparent correlation with fishing pressure, while A. furca and L. bohar, both had broader niche width metrics in heavily fished areas. No significant effect of fishing pressure was found at population or community levels. This study provides the first evidence using stable isotopes that fishing can alter the diets of coral reef fishes. The mechanism by which it can do so, while not entirely clear, would most likely be by expanding a given species’ dietary diversity by either forcing it to switch to non-preferred prey items or changing the diet and/or body size of its prey items, both of which would reflect significant ecological changes within a community. The Simple Truths of Safety at Sea for Alaskan Tender Vessels: Feasible Regulatory Changes to Prevent Vessel Casualties in the 17th Coast Guard District Tender Fleet

Tender vessels in the United States will soon need to comply with new safety regulations as mandated by the Coast Guard Authorization Act of 2010. This thesis focuses specifically on assisting in the formation of an Alternative Safety Compliance Program (ASCP) for the unique tender vessel fleet and seeks to understand why tender vessels experience fatalities and vessel casualties. By analyzing data of tendermen fatalities and tender vessel casualties between 2000 and 2012, the report sheds light on the realities of these incidents. Among other findings, the data show that the most common cause of vessel casualty was striking rocks or the ocean floor, and the most common human error was falling asleep at the helm. This thesis then proposes potential regulations that would be economically feasible and realistic for tenders by comparing the casualty data to the reported financial realities of current tender vessels. Notably, the analysis indicates that applying the current Alternative Compliance and Safety Agreement (ACSA) to tenders would not be beneficial. Ultimately, the proposed regulations herein should act as a foundation for a discussion regarding an alternative compliance agreement, as the final agreement will be reached through a much greater dialogue between many involved parties, including tendermen, regulators, safety compliance experts, and others.

Geochemistry and Noble Gases of Permafrost Groundwater and Ground Ice in Yukon and the Northwest Territories, Canada

In Canada’s western Arctic, perennial discharge from permafrost watersheds is the surface manifestation of active groundwater flow systems, yet understanding the mechanisms of groundwater recharge and flow in periglacial environments remains enigmatic. This thesis addresses questions on how and where groundwater recharge occurs. Watersheds were selected in Yukon (Fishing Branch River at Bear Cave Mountain) and the Northwest Territories at latitudes spanning from continuous to discontinuous permafrost (five tributary rivers to the Mackenzie River from Wrigley to Aklavik). All are characterized by perennial flow with open water in the winter, and discharge from sedimentary formations of karstic carbonates and evaporate rocks. Determinations of groundwater contributions to discharge, mixing, recharge conditions and circulation times were made on the basis of a suite of analytical approaches involving measurements of major dissolved ions, δ18O, δD, δ13CDIC, 3H, noble gases and flow gauging was conducted at some sites. The application of these tracers show that hydrogeological conditions and flow paths in permafrost terrains are surprisingly similar to those of temperate regions. Groundwater recharge was determined to be a mix of annual precipitation with contributions from snowmelt and precipitation. All systems investigated show that groundwaters have recharged through organic soils with elevated PCO2, which suggests that recharge occurs largely during summer when biological activity is high. Noble gas concentrations show that the recharge temperature was between 0 and 6 °C, which, when considered in the context of discharge temperatures, suggests that there is no significant imbalance of energy flux into the subsurface. Groundwater ages were found using the 3H-3He method and were dependent on flow path. By characterizing groundwater and surface water chemistry, the proportion of groundwater was found in numerous water courses. The possible impact of ground ice formation and melting on noble gas concentrations in groundwater was considered. To assess this link, a new method to measure the noble gas composition of ground ice bodies was developed. The method can be used to determine the origin of ice, based on changes in noble gas ratios between ice originating from compaction of snow (e.g. glacier ice) vs. ice originating from freezing of water. No significant fractionation of noble gases during groundwater freezing and ground ice formation was identified. Applied to determination of the origin of ground ice bodies, the method was shown to be both diagnostic of ice origin and un-encumbered by reactivity in the subsurface, which compromises the use of the dominant atmospheric gases (O2 and N2).   Résumé Dans l’Ouest de l'Arctique canadien, la décharge pérenne dans certaines rivières en région de pergélisol est la manifestation en surface d’une circulation d’eau souterraine; cependant la compréhension des mécanismes d’écoulement et de recharge des eaux souterraines en région de pergélisol demeure énigmatique. Cette thèse s’intéresse à la question de savoir comment et où la recharge des eaux souterraines se produit. Des bassins versants ont été choisis au Yukon (Rivière Fishing Branch à Bear Cave Mountain) et dans les Territoire du Nord-Ouest à des latitudes s’étendant du pergélisol discontinu au pergélisol continu (cinq tributaires du Mackenzie entre Wrigley et Aklavik). Toutes ces rivières ont un écoulement d’eau pérenne avec des zones non gelées et une décharge dans des formations sédimentaires de roches carbonatées et d‘évaporites. L’identification des contributions des eaux à la décharge, les mélanges, les conditions de recharge, et les temps de circulation ont été faits à partir d’analyses qui ont inclus les concentrations en éléments majeurs, leur valeur isotopique (δ18O, δD, δ13C, 3H), ainsi que leur teneur en gaz rares. A certain des sites analysés des mesures d’écoulement ont été prises. L’application de ces traceurs montre que les conditions hydrauliques et le chemin des écoulements en région de pergélisol sont similaires à ceux des régions tempérées. La recharge en eau souterraine a été identifiée comme étant un mélange de précipitations annuelles, avec des contributions de neige et de pluies. Tous les systèmes étudiés montrent que les eaux souterraines se sont rechargées en traversant des sols organiques avec une PCO2 élevée, ce qui suggère que la recharge se produire largement durant l’été quand l’activité biologique est élevée. Cependant, les concentrations en gaz nobles montre que la température de recharge des eaux souterraines était entre 0 et 6 °C ce qui indique qu’il n’y a pas de déséquilibre de flux d’énergie à l’intérieur de la zone proche de la surface. L’âge des eaux a été déterminé par la méthode 3H-3He et cet âge est dépendant du chemin d'écoulement. En caractérisant les paramètres chimiques des eaux de surface et des eaux souterraines, il a été possible de trouver la contribution des eaux souterraines aux eaux surface. Le possible impact de la formation et de la fonte de la glace souterraine sur les concentrations des gaz nobles a été considéré. Pour déterminer s’il y a un lien entre ceux-ci, une nouvelle méthode pour mesurer la concentration en gaz nobles dans les glaces souterraines a été développée. La méthode peut être utilisée pour déterminer l’origine de la glace; elle est basée sur les changements dans les rapports des gaz nobles entre la glace issue de la compaction de la neige (c’est-à-dire la glace de glacier) par opposition à la glace issue du gel de l’eau. Aucun fractionnement significatif des gaz nobles durant l’engel des eaux souterraines et la formation de glaces souterraines n’a été identifié. Appliquée à l’identification de l’origine des masses de glace enfouies, on a montré que la méthode pouvait permettre d’identifier l’origine des glaces souterraines sans qu’elle soit affectée par des réactions biologiques de sub-surface, lesquelles rendent inutilisables les gaz atmosphériques (O2, and N2).

Simultaneous MSY management of a predator and prey species, the Cod (Gadus morhua) and Herring (Clupea harengus) in the Baltic Sea

The European Commission manages fish stocks by applying a fishing mortality based on the maximum sustainable yield concept. So far most Baltic Sea fishing maximum sustainable yieldmodels have focused on one species at a time. The few existing multi-species models have assumed that a species’ maturity and growth is dependent on the availability of food. Our two-species models make it possible to investigate if there is a conflict between fishing maximum sustainable yield for cod and herring in the Baltic Sea. This two-species model of cod, as a predator and herring as prey, takes into account environmental drivers on cod and herring recruitment. Reproductive volume together with year-growth, (a year specific effect on growth of external variables like food availability) and predation by grey seals was included in the cod model. The herring model was dependent on cod spawning stock biomass and year-growth. The result shows that the reproductive volume is the main factor that affects the maximum sustainable yield for cod. The spawning stock biomass at maximum sustainable yield is more sensitive to reproductive volume than year-growth. When predation from seals is added in mortality and high environmental factors occurs the spawning stock biomass would be 50% compared to the spawning stock biomass at high environmental effects without seal predation. Four simulations of high cod spawning stock biomass were devastating for the herring population that was eradicated with high predation pressure. The herring maximum sustainable yield depends on the amount of cod spawning stack biomass i.e. the effect of high or low reproductive volume. Two analyses were made on a current environmental state for both species. The first analysis had a natural mortality of 0.2 for cod, which gave an fishing mortality of 0.20 and maximum sustainable yield of 410 000 tons. The herring had a fishing mortality of 0.03 and maximum sustainable yield of 11 000 tons. The second simulation included seal predation in cod mortality which decreased the cod maximum sustainable yield by 98% at a fishing mortality of 0.02, which gave a fishing mortality of 0.19 and maximum sustainable yield of 275 000 tons for herring. This gives a 25 times increase of herring maximum sustainable yield compared to the result without predation on cod. The cod population dynamics is vulnerable to environmental changes and to secure a healthy and productive cod population the target fishing mortality should be kept in phase with current reproductive volume. / Europeiska kommissionen förvaltar fiskbestånden genom att tillämpa fiskekvoter baserat på konceptet maximalt hållbart uttag. Denna två-arts-modell med torsk som ett rovdjur och sill som byte, tar hänsyn till miljön som drivkraft på deras rekrytering. I torskmodellen ingick reproduktiv volym tillsammans med årlig tillväxt (ett års specifika effekt på tillväxten beroende av externa variabler som tillgången till föda) och predation av gråsäl. Sill-modellen var beroende av årlig tillväxt och lekbeståndets biomassa hos torsk. Resultaten visar att den viktigaste faktorn som påverkar maximalt hållbart uttag för torsk är reproduktiv volym. Lekbeståndets biomassa vid maximalt hållbart uttag är mer känsligt för förändringar i reproduktiv volym än årlig tillväxt. När predation från säl tillsätts och höga gynnsamma miljöfaktorer råder är lekbeståndets biomassa 50 % jämfört med lekbeståndets biomassa vid höga gynnsamma miljöeffekter utan säl predation. Fyra simuleringar gav hög lekbestånds biomassa för torsk vilket var förödande för sillpopulationen som utrotades pga. högt predationstryck. Sillens maximala hållbara uttag beror på mängden lekbestånds biomassa hos torsk, d.v.s. effekten av hög eller låg reproduktiv volym. Två analyser gjordes på nuvarande miljömässiga nivåer för båda arterna. Den första analysen hade en naturlig dödlighet på 0,2 för torsk, vilket gav en fiske-mortalitet på 0,20 och maximalt hållbart uttag på 410 000 ton. Sillen hade en fiske-mortalitet på 0,03 och maximalt hållbart uttag på 11 000 ton. I den andra simuleringen ingår sälpredation på torsk vilket minskade torskens maximala hållbara uttag med 98 % vid en fiske-mortalitet på 0,02, vilket gav en fiske-mortalitet på 0,19 och maximalt hållbart uttag på 275 000 ton för sill. Detta ger en ökning av maximalt hållbart uttag för sill 25 gånger jämfört med resultatet utan predation på torsk. Torskens populationsdynamik är sårbar för miljöförändringar och för att säkra ett sunt och produktivt torskbestånd bör fiskemortaliteten hållas i fas med nuvarande reproduktiva volym.
