Uncertainty Quantification in Flow and Flow Induced Structural Response

Suryawanshi, Anup Arvind January 2015 (has links) (PDF)
Response of flexible structures — such as cable-supported bridges and aircraft wings — is associated with a number of uncertainties in structural and flow parameters. This thesis is aimed at efficient uncertainty quantification in a few such flow and flow-induced structural response problems. First, the uncertainty quantification in the lift force exerted on a submerged body in a potential flow is considered. To this end, a new method — termed here as semi-intrusive stochastic perturbation (SISP) — is proposed. A sensitivity analysis is also performed, where for the global sensitivity analysis (GSA) the Sobol’ indices are used. The polynomial chaos expansion (PCE) is used for estimating these indices. Next, two stability problems —divergence and flutter — in the aeroelasticity are studied in the context of reliability based design optimization (RBDO). Two modifications are proposed to an existing PCE-based metamodel to reduce the computational cost, where the chaos coefficients are estimated using Gauss quadrature to gain computational speed and GSA is used to create nonuniform grid to reduce the cost even further. The proposed method is applied on a rectangular unswept cantilever wing model. Next, reliability computation in limit cycle oscillations (LCOs) is considered. While the metamodel performs poorly in this case due to bimodality in the distribution, a new simulation-based scheme proposed to this end. Accordingly, first a reduced-order model (ROM) is used to identify the critical region in the random parameter space. Then the full-scale expensive model is run only over a this critical region. This is applied to the rectangular unswept cantilever wing with cubic and fifth order stiffness terms in its equation of motion. Next, the wind speed is modeled as a spatio-temporal process, and accordingly new representations of spatio-temporal random processes are proposed based on tensor decompositions of the covariance kernel. These are applied to three problems: a heat equation, a vibration, and a readily available covariance model for wind speed. Finally, to assimilate available field measurement data on wind speed and to predict based on this assimilation, a new framework based on the tensor decompositions is proposed. The framework is successfully applied to a set of measured data on wind speed in Ireland, where the prediction based on simulation is found to be consistent with the observed data.

Un modèle de poutre à section mince flexible : Application aux pliages 3D de mètres-rubans / A rod model with flexible thin-walled cross-section : Application to the folding of tape springs in 3D

Picault, Elia 21 November 2013 (has links)
This work was carried out within the framework of a collaboration between the LMA and Thales Alenia Space. We focus on the behaviour of flexible structures and more specifically of tape springs, whose particularity lies in their capacity to coil up or to form localized folds through the flattening of their cross-section. A first thesis led to the development of a new type of tape spring whose uncoiling is controlled thermically on one hand and of a planar rod model with a flexible thin-walled cross-section on the other hand. In this thesis, we offer an extended version of this model dedicated to the simulation of three-dimensional dynamic behavior of tape springs in large displacements and large rotations. This model is derived from shell theory and is based on the introduction of adapted kinematic and sthenic hypotheses. The deformation of the cross-section is characterized by that of its average line which can deform in its own plane by flexion and twisting but not by extension, as well as out of its plane through torsional warping. The large changes of the cross-section shape in its plane can then be described by an Elastica kinematics, whereas a Vlassov kinematics is used to define the warping in the local frame attached to the section. The unidimensionnal model is obtained by integration over the cross-section of the expressions of the shell theory, an energetic approach then allows to express the associated problem which is solved thanks to the finite element modeling software COMSOL.

Funke, Henrik, Ehrlich, Andreas, Ulke-Winter, Lars, Petzoldt, Carolin, Gelbrich, Sandra, Kroll, Lothar 21 July 2022 (has links)
[Aus: Ausgangsfragen und Zielsetzung] / The practical implementation of large-scale curved concrete elements requires complex formwork constructions, which are rather expensive and therefore reach their limits easily [2]. Flexible glass fibre reinforced plastic (GFRP) formwork to produce textile reinforced concrete elements, which was developed and tested within the project, is expected to eliminate those deficits. Faktoren zur Integration von Mitgliedern von Jugendgemeinden in landeskirchliche Ortsgemeinden in Wurttemberg : Eine praktisch-theologische Untersuchung / Factors for the integration of members of youth church congregations into mainline church congregations in Wurttemberg : a practical theological investigation

Lipponer, Cornelius 02 1900 (has links)
Initiated by a project of the youth division of the protestant church in Württemberg, an in-creasing number of youth churches (“Jugendgemeinden”) have been formed in different parishes and districts of the protestant church in Württemberg (“Evangelische Kirche in Würt-temberg”). These youth churches view themselves as more than the current understanding of normal youth ministry. They conduct regular youth worship services, have a congregation of committed members and develop the self-understanding of an actual church. Because youth churches target a teenage demographic, its members are placed in the position of needing to search for another church home once they become too old for the youth church. This dissertation aims to find factors which aid the transition of former members of youth churches into protestant local church congregations (“landeskirchliche Ortsgemeinden”) and respectively find factors which lead to migration outside these protestant church congregations. To that end, guided interviews are conducted with former members of youth churches and are analyzed by employing the qualitative content analysis method by Philipp Mayring. These determined factors form the basis for recommendations for action and a renewed church practice. They are discussed within the practical-theological and church context. / Philosophy, Practical & Systematic Theology / M. Th. (Practical Theology)
