Prevalence of bacterial vaginosis in lesbians and heterosexual women in a community setting

Evans, A.L., Scally, Andy J., Wellard, S.J., Wilson, J.D. January 2007 (has links)
Objectives: High prevalence of bacterial vaginosis (BV) has been reported in lesbians but most studies were based in sexually transmitted infection clinic settings; therefore, we wished to determine the prevalence and risk factors of BV in lesbians and heterosexual women in a community setting in the UK. Methods: A cross-sectional study recruiting lesbian women volunteers from community groups, events, clubs and bars. Heterosexual women were recruited from a community family planning clinic. They self-swabbed to create a vaginal smear, which was Gram-stained and categorised as BV, intermediate or normal flora. They completed a questionnaire about age, ethnic group, smoking, genital hygiene practices and sexual history. Results: Of 189 heterosexuals and 171 lesbians recruited, 354 had gradeable flora. BV was identified in 43 (25.7%) lesbians and 27 (14.4%) heterosexuals (adjusted OR 2.45, 95% CI 1.25 to 4.82; p¿=¿0.009). Concordance of vaginal flora within lesbian partnerships was significantly greater than expected (27/31 (87%) couples, ¿¿=¿0.63; p<0.001). Smoking significantly increased the risk of BV regardless of sexuality (adjusted OR 2.65; p¿=¿0.001) and showed substantial concordance in lesbian partnerships but less than for concordance of flora. Conclusions: Women who identified as lesbians have a 2.5-fold increased likelihood of BV compared with heterosexual women. The prevalence is slightly lower than clinic-based studies and as volunteers were recruited in community settings, this figure may be more representative of lesbians who attend gay venues. Higher concordance of vaginal flora within lesbian partnerships may support the hypothesis of a sexually transmissible factor or reflect common risk factors such as smoking.

An Exploratory Study of Flora Poaching in Central Appalachia

Bowers, McKinley 01 August 2024 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this study was to explore perceptions of flora poaching among conservation officers, park rangers and botanists within Central Appalachia. Though some work has sought to understand poaching in other forms, such as animal poaching, little is known regarding the poaching of plants. This is especially true within the Appalachian Region. Several research questions were explored in this study, including the types of flora being poached, the characteristics of poachers, poaching tactics utilized, and deterrence measures that are currently in place. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 20 individuals working in the field. Findings contribute to the existing literature surrounding poaching, which can aid conservation efforts across the Appalachian Region.

As tribos Crotalarieae (Benth.) Hutch. e Genisteae (Bronn) Dumort. (Leguminosae - Papilionoideae) na Serra do Cipó, Minas Gerais, Brasil / The tribes Crotalarieae and Genisteae (Leguminosae-Papilionoidae) of the Serra do Cipó, Minas Gerais, Brazil

Devecchi, Marcelo Fernando 10 December 2012 (has links)
The main goal of this study is to provide a taxonomic survey of the tribes Crotalarieae (Benth.) Hutch. and Genisteae (Bronn) Dumort. (Leguminosae-Papilionoideae) in the Serra do Cipó, Minas Gerais. The Serra do Cipó is located in the southern portion of the Espinhaço range of mountains, which extends for about 1000 km in north-south direction, from the state of Minas Gerais to the state of Bahia. The Serra do Cipó belongs to the Cerrado Domain, and its main vegetation type is the Campo Rupestre, a mostly herbaceous formation with scattered shrubs and treelets on litholic or sandy soils around rocky outcrops, found in higher areas of the mountains. On lower elevations other phytophysiognomies are found, mostly patches of savannahs formations (cerrados and cerradões), gallery forests, montane forests and swamps. Field expeditions and the examination of herbarium collections led to the recognition of 16 species of Crotalaria L. (Crotalarieae), and 2 species of Lupinus L. (Genisteae) in the area. The first chapter of the dissertation comprises a taxonomic survey of the species of these two genera occurring in the Serra do Cipó. It contains keys for identification, morphological descriptions and illustrations of the species, and comments on their geographical distribution, phenology and morphological variation. The second chapter presents an anatomical study of leaves of 16 species of Crotalaria occurring in the Serra do Cipó, aiming to provide additional characters for the circumscription of the species. Leaf samples were obtained from herbarium specimens and standard techniques in plant anatomy were used, including light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Many of the characters analyzed were non-informative, but the following ones were useful to recognize several species: characters related to lamina texture, to the epidermis, and to the venation pattern, specially the formation of areoles and mode of insertion of the secondary veins to midvein

No. of bitstreams: 1 MoniqueRibeiro.pdf: 2880408 bytes, checksum: f8dedc19319b8c2a0065599d3d0097d0 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2017-06-28 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa e ao Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico do Maranhão / We analyzed the pollen spectrum of one hundred and thirty geopropollis samples of the following species of Melipona: M. fasciculata, M. flavolineata, M. seminigra and M. subnitida. Samples were collected in the municipality of Santa Luzia do Paruá, in the Alto Turi region, which belongs to the Amazon region, in the state of Maranhao. The objective of this study was to recognize the phytogeographic and chemical profile of the Melipona geopropolis samples and to help characterize the resin supplying vegetation for these bees. The geopropolis samples were collected monthly from December/2013 to December/2014 from nests kept in wooden boxes in a particular meliponary. The palynological analysis was done according to the standard methodology proposed by Barth (1998). The chemical profile of the samples was determined by high performance liquid chromatography (CLAE), liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC / MS) analysis. And also included quantification of the content of total polyphenols (TPT) through the use of Folin-Ciocalteau reagents and sodium carbonate 20%; total flavonoids (TFT) by the photocolorimetric method with methanolic solution of aluminum chloride (AlCl3) 5%, and the antioxidant activity of the hydroalcoholic extracts of geopropolis by the DPPH free radical assay (Brand-Williams et al). A total of 148 pollen types were identified, distributed in 49 families, 108 genera and two unidentified types. In the geopropolis samples of M. subnitida 107 pollen types were distributed in 40 families and 72 genera. In the M. seminigra, 93 pollen types, 37 families and 70 genera were observed. For M. flavolineata were 98 pollen types, belonging to 33 families and 72 genera. In M. fasciculata there were 64 pollen types, 28 families and 53 genera, being therefore the one with the lowest pollen richness in the samples. Fabaceae presented the highest richness of pollen types (39 types), followed by Rubiaceae (11 types). The pollen types most common to Melipona species were: Attalea speciosa, Anacardium, Borreria verticilatta, Baccharis, Clusia, Chamaecrista, Croton, Euterpe/Syagrus, Eucalyptus, Hyptis, Mauritia, Mimosa pudica, M. caesalpinaefolia, Mouriri, Myrcia /Psidium, Protium And Symphonia globulifera, which characterized the phytogeographic profile of the geopropolis of this region. Aniardium, Ardisia, Baccharis, Caryocar, Clusia, Clusia grandiflora, Eucalyptus, Eupatorium, Hyptis, Myrcia/Psidium, Platonia insignis, Protium, Spondias, Symphonia globulifera, Tapirira and Vismia were the possible resin species suppliers for the Melipona geoprópolis . The presence of various compounds which have been tentatively characterized as quinic acid, benzophenone derivatives, O-glycosylated flavonoid and xanthones have been disclosed. The mangiferin compound was present in all samples. It was also verified the presence of benzophenones that appear to be involved in the biosynthesis of glycosylated xanthones. The extracts presented flavonoid contents above 2%, which allows them to be classified according to Brazilian legislation as a geopropolis with a high content of flavonoids. For the antioxidant activity a variation of 2.20 to 44.35% occurred. There was a variation in the content of phenolic compounds and flavonoids among the different samples of the four Melipona species analyzed. The results indicate that the bee species and the collection season, as well as the interaction between these factors, influence the concentration of bioactive compounds in the geopropolis. Thus, we believe that the results obtained contribute significantly to the geopropolis characterization of stingless bees from Amazonia Maranhense and show the importance of expanding the studies of chemical characterization and standardization of product quality parameters, since thisis a rich source of bioactive compounds with great pharmacological potential.

Caractérisation de flores microbiennes intestinale humaine et fromagère par méthode de métagénomique quantative / Characterization of human intestinal microbiota and cheese microbiota by quantitative metagenomic method

Almeida, Mathieu 07 June 2013 (has links)
The microbial flora is a micro-organism complex containing for example bacteria, archaea, lower eukaryotes and viruses, which play an important role in ecosystem equilibrium. This flora remains poorly defined as in 2012, only ~30% of the intestinal flora micro-organisms have been characterized, and less than 50% of traditional cheese floras were characterized at the functional level. Since 2006, the second generation of DNA sequencers have allowed the direct analysis of the genetic content from a microbial flora sample without isolation or culture limitation. However, the DNA reads generated are not structured with respect to genomes and also are highly fragmented, slowing down dramatically the exploitation and analysis of these data.In this work, a new methodology based on quantitative metagenomic are described., This allows the clustering of short DNA sequences with the same abundance in multiple metagenomic samples, which should originate from the same microbial species. A 3.9 million gene catalog has been built from the human intestinal tract microbiota and divided into 741 units or clusters corresponding to bacteria, archaea and eukaryote genomes. These have been defined as metagenomic species (MGS) and 6640 units of them corresponds mainly to viral genomes, plasmids and genetic islands like CRISPR, with the sub-name of metagenomic units (MGU). This methodology was then used to facilitate the association analysis of the intestinal flora composition with human diseases such as Crohn’s disease, obesity or type 2 diabetes. Within, the alimentary flora, our methods have also been used to constitute a 134 genomic catalog of cheese bacteria and characterize them from the surface of traditional cheeses. This allowed the detection of new alimentary bacteria, that will enriched the list of bacteria with potential interest for the commercial exploitation of fermented products.

Along with the Environmental Law, the Legal Reserve - in order to fulfill the Property Social Role ¿ allows rural landowners to make good use of natural resources and still preserve the environment in a rational way, besides providing shelter for the native flora and fauna of the region where it is located. Among important legal and environmental functions to the efficiency of environmental preservation, the lack of incentives ¿ which benefit rural producers from voluntarily establishing the institution of Legal Reserve ¿ is one of the factors that prevent an environmental reserve from existing in the majority of the rural properties within the national territory. Thus, it is essential that producers and people in general realize the importance of the Legal Reserve in rural properties, where the natural resources are preserved for present and future generations of Brazil.

January 2019 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: Apis mellifera L. (1758) bees are considered the main pollinators of flowering plants and also one of the most honey-producing species. Because of the large number of plant species they use to obtain food and raw materials, the botanical identification of honey is fundamental for the classification of flowering as monofloral or wild. For this, the melissopalynology technique uses the analysis of the external morphological characteristics of pollen grains present in honey. The present study aimed to analyze the seasonal foraging behavior of Apis mellifera hives by identifying the nectiferous and polyniferous pollen types present in honey. Honey was collected between October 2017 and August 2018 in the spring, summer, autumn and winter seasons at the Setor de Apicultura da Faculdade de Ciências Agrárias e Veterinárias, FCAV/UNESP Campus de Jaboticabal, São Paulo, Brazil where three hives of Apis mellifera bees were installed. For the extraction of pollen grains and slide assembly the classical melissopalynology methodology and the classical acetolysis technique were employed. In all, 42 pollen types were found, distributed in 24 botanical families. Some types were observed in all seasons: Alternanthera (Amaranthaceae), Cecropia (Urticaceae), Mimosa (Fabaceae) and Myrtaceae (Myrtaceae), but there were also unique types of seasons: Aloe, Bignoniaceae, Byrsonima, Daustinia, Eucalyptus, Euphorbiaceae, Machaerium, Mangifera, Pseudobombax, Sapindus, Solanum and Tabebuia in spring; An...
