Reconstrução da hidrografia superficial do Atlântico Sul Ocidental desde o Último Máximo Glacial a partir do estudo de foraminíferos planctônicos / Sea surface hydrography reconstruction of the Western South Atlantic since the Last Glacial Maximum based on the study of planktonic foraminifera

María Alejandra Gómez Pivel 10 March 2010 (has links)
The goal of this thesis is to document the paleoclimatic and paleoceanographic changes occurred at the millennial scale since the Last Glacial Maximum at the surface Western South Atlantic. Paleotemperature, paleosalinity and paleoproductivity estimates were obtained for this purpose based on faunal changes of foraminifera assemblages, carbon and oxygen stable isotopes in Globigerinoides ruber and nine radiocarbon datings in a core retrieved at Santos Basin. These data were supplemented by the reanalysis of a second core previously analyzed from a different sector of the same basin. The results demonstrate that paleoceanographic changes recorded in the analyzed period may be partially explained by changes in the heat and salt export to the northern hemisphere related to the meridional overturning cell and the surface currents related to atmospheric circulation. Another significant portion of the observed variability seems to be related to changes in the strength of the South American Monsoon System resulting from insolation changes according to the precessional cycle. The main departures from the expected trend of variation in the isotopic composition of seawater related to insolation changes coincide with great meltwater pulses occurred around 19, 14, and 8.2 kyr BP.

A continuidade do monitoramento é essencial para compreender como esse ambiente tão importante irá se recuperar e/ou responder aos futuros eventos de anomalias térmicas / This study aimed to assess Rocas Atoll coral reef health by monitoring corals cover and health, as well the benthic foraminifera assemblages and the FORAM Index (FI) in 15 tide pools. Furthermore, the Mg/Ca ratios for recent (stained) foraminifera Nonion commune from Rocas Atoll were also described. A total of 276 point intercept transects and belt transects (20x1m) were surveyed during 6 expeditions (Oct/07, Mar and Dec/10, May/11, May and Nov/12) and revealed coral cover ranging between ~3 and 50% inside tide pools. Bleached and diseased corals were positive related to SST anomalies recorded for 2010, and might be the main reason of a significant coral cover decline in 4 open tide pools. Coral diseases reached higher percentages and persist longer than bleaching. In 2012 no high temperature was recorded and coral cover showing no signs of decline. High radiation levels, clear water, shallow depth, high water flow, low coral diversity, high abundance of one species (Siderastrea stellata) and direct algal contact might be influenced the high percentages of coral diseases. A total of 105 surface sediment samples were collected between December 2010 and May 2011 at the same tide pools. A total of 108 genera of benthic foraminifera were identified, however most of them showed abundance lower than 1%. The genera Archaias, Quinqueloculina, Sorites, Amphistegina and Borelis were dominant in the two sampling periods, and together represent more than 60% relative abundance in all tide pools. A significant and positive relation was found between the grain size and benthic foraminifera density. Lowest densities were founded in open tide pools with high water flow. Clear water, shallow depth, high water flow, high algae abundance and carbonate environment resulted in Archaias angulatus associations. Symbiont-bearing foraminifera proportion is above 40% in all tide pools, resulting FORAM Index (FI) values between 5.76 and 9.15, with mean value 7.0 for Rocas Atoll. Therefore, the FI indicates that the water quality is favorable to growth and/or reef recovery, but showed no correlation with coral cover and algae. It is recommended that monitoring coral cover and health and foraminifera to be complementary and not independent. Trace element composition analyses of recent foraminifera, using the laser ablation (LA-ICP-MS), were conducted in 50 tests of Nonion commune (alive at sampling time), tests sizes ranged from 200-354 μm. The mean Mg/Ca ratios recorded were - 6.12 to 7.85 mmol/mol - consistent with the range of variation found for smaller benthic foraminifera and to shallow and warm waters. The relation between Mg/Ca rations and test size, suggest that future analysis considers only tests greater than 250 μm, and varying only 50 μm. It is possible to suggest that this species may be used in future paleotemperatures research Mg/Cabased, since they appear to be related to the seawater calcification temperature, although a more detailed study in an environment with a higher seasonal SST variations is necessary to confirm this relation. Continuing monitoring is essential to understand how Rocas Atoll will recover and/or respond to future events of thermal stress anomalies

With the damages that have been caused in the brazilian reefs ecosystems and considering their high endemism, the conservation of biodiversity therefore is indispensable and the use of bioindicators are important for understanding the phenomena that affects marine ecosystems. In this context, the foraminiferal assemblages have been widespread used as environmental quality indicators of coral reefs, since these organisms are among the main producers of reef sediments. The aim of this work was to evaluate the interaction between geochemical parameters and benthic foraminifera assemblages to assess the environmental quality of Recife de Fora, which corresponds to a marine protected area subject to tourism and exploitation of its resources. For this purpose, 59 random stations were chosen for surface sediment sampling and analyses of particle size, organic matter content, calcium carbonate and foraminifera. The seaward side of the reef had the highest proportions of sand and calcium carbonate among all stations and the landward exhibited the sediments, mainly composed of mud and higher concentrations of organic matter. In the latter area the highest diversity indexes (Shanon-Wiener) were found with a greater abundance of the stress-tolerant foraminifera Bolivina, Ammonia and Nonion. As such, a close relationship among the sediment type with the diversity and the composition of foraminifera assemblage indicating that the distribution pattern of the analysed fauna is directly related to sedimentary parameters associated with the presence of coral reefs and hydrodynamic conditions operating in the area

Penaud, Aurélie 04 December 2009 (has links)
While the long-term climatic variability of the Quaternary is relatively well understood today, the causes and processes at the origin of the rapid and brutal climatic variability that characterized the last glacial period (Dansgaard-Oeschger cycles), including meridional and latitudinal heat transfer mechanisms, are still subject to debate. As such, studying the hydrological connection between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea appears particularly appropriate since it illustrates the coupling acting on a double East-West and North-South gradient. It furthermore links subtropical processes and North Atlantic ones. We focused our analysis on sedimentary sequences retrieved around the Strait of Gibraltar, in order to extend the spatial and temporal knowledges about the impact of the high frequency climatic variability of the last 50 000 years in the sector of the eastern subtropical Atlantic and of the western Mediterranean Sea. The methodology of this thesis is based on a multi-proxy compilation coupling micropaleontological (dinocysts and planktonic foraminifera) and geochemical (stable isotopes and alkenones) approaches. We have tested the consistency of the sea-surface paleohydrological changes at inter-and intra-basins scales and tried to characterize the associated migration of the hydrological fronts. Sites of the Portuguese and Moroccan margins, in particular, allowed us to document the impact of the D/O cycles on the intensity of coastal upwelling cells as well as on the dynamics of the MOW, by coupling sea surface signals (temperature, salinity and productivity) to paleointensity of the MOW.

Calibration of the clumped-isotope thermometer in foraminifera and its application to paleoclimatic reconstructions of the mid-Pleistocene in the Gulf of Taranto / Calibration du thermomètre "clumping isotopique" dans les foraminifères et son application à des reconstitutions paléoclimatologiques du Pléistocène moyen dans le Golfe de Tarente

Peral, Marion 19 October 2018 (has links)
The quantification of past oceanic temperature changes is a critical requirement for understanding the mechanisms which regulate climate variations. Classical methods of paleothermometry could suffer from well-known limitations related to ecology and/or to physico-chemical biases (sea water salinity, acidity…). This work focuses on clumped-isotope carbonate thermometry (Δ47). It aims to establish a calibration of Δ47 foraminifera and use it to study past climatic variations through the Mid-Pleistocene Transition (MPT). Our Δ47 calibration in planktonic and benthic foraminifera collected from modern marine sediment covers a temperature range of -2 to 25 °C. The clumped-isotope compositions of 9 species of foraminifera show a robust correlation with the calcification temperature, estimated from the measurements of oxygen-18. These results confirm the absence of bias linked to foraminifer ecology (species-specific and foraminifer size effects) and provide evidence that salinity does not affect the Δ47 thermometer. This study constitutes significant methodological progress for future paleoceanographic applications in foraminifera. The MPT is a climatic transition characterized by a shift in the frequencies of glacial-interglacial cycles (from 41 000 to 100 000 years). Understanding the MPT is a major scientific objective, which underlies our effort to study the establishment of our present climate. Our Δ47 calibration was used to quantify temperature changes through the MPT in the Mediterranea Sea (Montalbano Jonico section, south of Italy), and in particular the marine isotopic stages 31 and 19, which may be described as Holocene analogues. We find that (1) Δ47 temperatures are in good agreement with temperatures reconstructed from other paleothermometers, (2) these results allow reconstructing changes in past oceanographic and hydrologic regime, and (3) Δ47 measurement are a promising component of multi-proxy paleoceanographic studies.

DATA MINING AND VISUALIZATION OF EARTH HISTORY DATASETS FROM GEOLOGICAL TIMESCALE CREATOR PROJECT

Abdullah Khan Zehady (8790095) 04 May 2020 (has links)

The Geologic TimeScale Creator (TSCreator) project has compiled a range of paleo-environmental and bio-diversity data which provides the opportunity to explore origination, speciation and extinction events. My PhD research has four major interconnected themes which include the visualization methods of evolutionary tree and the impacts of climate change on the evolution of life in longer and shorter timeframes: (1) Evolutionary range data of planktonic foraminifera and nannofossils over the Cenozoic era have been updated with our latest geological timescale. These evolutionary ranges can be visualized in the form of interactive, extensible evolutionary trees and can be compared with other geologic data columns. (2) A novel approach of integrating morphospecies and lineage trees is proposed to expand the scope of exploration of the evolutionary history of microfossils. It is now possible to visualize morphological changes and ancestor-descendant lineage relationships on TSCreator charts which helps mutual learning of these species based on genetic and bio-stratigraphic studies. (3) These evolutionary datasets have been used to analyze semi-periodic cycles in the past bio-diversity and characteristic rates of turnover. Well-known Milankovitch cycles have been found as the drivers of fluctuations in the speciation and extinction processes. (4) Within a shorter 2000-year time period, global cooling events might have been a factor of human civilization turnover. Using our regional and global cultural turnover time series data, the effect of climate change on human culture has been proposed. The enhancement of the evolutionary visualization system accomplished by this research will hopefully allow academic and non-academic users across the world to research and easily explore Earth history data through publicly available TSCreator program and websites.

New insights into the current- and past hydrology of the north-western subtropical Pacific Ocean over the past 25 kyr, based on investigations of the Nd isotopic composition of seawater and deep-sea sediments from the northern South China Sea / Etude de l'hydrologie de la Mer de Chine du Sud depuis la dernière période glaciaire à partir de la composition isotopique du Nd analysé dans les foraminifères

Wu, Qiong 08 September 2014 (has links)
The aim of this study is to reconstruct the evolution of the hydrology of the western subtropical North Pacific Ocean by using εNd proxy analysed on foraminifera and dispersed authigenic ferromanganese oxide precipitates in sediments from deep-sea cores collected in the northern SCS. Before using the εNd proxy on deep sea sediments of the SCS, Nd of 16 seawater profiles collected in the northern South China Sea (SCS) and the Philippine Sea were investigated to establish the εNd distribution of water masses along the tropical western Pacific and the SCS that, until now have not been documented. εNd values for mid- and deep-water masses of the Philippine Sea and the SCS range from -2.7 to -4.4 and generally increase slightly with water depth. In the Philippine Sea, εNd values for the North Pacific Intermediate Water (NPIW) reach- 2.7±0.4 at mid-depths (500 to 1400 m). Below ~1800 m, the Pacific Deep Water (PDW) is characterized by less radiogenic Nd (-4.1±0.5) indicating the instrusion of southern sourced water masses. For most of the stations in the Northern SCS, water masses below 1500m (PDW) display homogenous εNd values (~ -4.1) similar to those of the PDW in the Philippine Sea. εNd values for the South China Sea Intermediate Water (SCSIW, 500-1500m) vary from -3.0 to -3.9 as a result of the vertical mixing of the NPIW with the PDW in the SCS. Seawater εNd values for the SCS (~5.3 to -7.0) display local modification in areas where the water lies above sediment drift deposit systems. This implies that “boundary exchange” with unradiogenic sediments (around~11) may occur temporally and spatially and does not modify he Nd isotopic composition of the PDW in the Northern SCS. In a second step, seawater εNd extracted from cleaned planktonic foraminifera G. ruber has been investigated on core MD05-2904, collected at a deph of 2000m on the north-western margin of the SCS. This study was undertaken in order to reconstruct hydrological variations since the LGM in the western subtropical North Pacific. The εNd records obtained from foraminifera spanning the past 25kyr. Display a wide range of values, ranging from -4±0.2 to -6.7±0.3, suggesting important changes in the contribution of the NPDW (εNd=-4) and the UCDW (εNd -6 to -8) in the subtropical western Pacific. During the period of deglaciation, εNd records indicate a relative decrease in the negative excursions of the εNd implying a higher proportion of SSW during the time intervals 17-15 cal kyr BP and 10-8 cal kyr BP; these intervals are coeval with the HS1 and early Holocene. The negative shifts centered on the HS1coincide with an enhanced upwelling in the Southern Ocean, associated with a polewards shift of the southern westerlies, inducing an enhanced formation of the SSW that propagates to the subtropical western Pacific. The negative excursion of the εNd during the Early Holocene (~10-8 cal kyr BP) indicates a higher relative proportion of SSW that could be associate with higher production of the SSW, as has been recently observed in the South Atlantic, and/or with a possible reduction of the NPIW. Our data suggest that the present modern circulation pattern in the western subtropical Pacific Ocean was fully established after 4.6 cal kyr BP.

Influência de efluentes domésticos e petroquímicos em sedimentos e carapaças de foraminíferos do Canal de São Sebastião, SP / Influence of domestic and petrochemical sewage in tests of foraminifera and sediments of the São Sebastião Channel, SP

Gubitoso, Silas 23 April 2010 (has links)
The goal of this study was to evaluate the influence of domestic and petrochemical sewage, discharged through a submarine sewage outfall, on the physicochemical and microbiological composition of the water column and the geochemistry of sediments. As well as to investigate a possible relationship between the environment and the chemical composition of Ammonia tepida foraminifer\'s tests. The area where this study was focused on two sewage emissaries: Araçá and Almirante Barroso Petroliferous Terminal (TEBAR), both located in São Sebastião Channel, São Paulo, Brazil. To achieve this goal, 10 water and bottom sediments samples in in March and April of 2007 were collected form each outfall. A background sample also collected as a control. For each water sample physicochemical and microbiological analyses were carried out and, in the sediments, grainsize and geochemical (macronutrients, major and trace elements) were analyzed. Trace elements found in the tests of stained (live) and unstained (dead) Ammonia tepida were identified by scanning electron microscopy using energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) and by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The analysis of the water samples showed that the water column was not contaminated. All the concentrations obtained were in accordance with the National Environmental Council (CONAMA) limits. Grain size analysis, demonstrated that the sediments are of terriginous origin, being mainly psamitic in Araçá and mainly pelitic in TEBAR. The geochemical data of organic Carbon, Nitrogen, Sulphur and Phosphorus revealed that both regions are susceptible to enrichment in these elements. In both areas, the concentration of trace elements, when compared to quality guideline values, was not considered toxic for marine life. However, significative enrichment in Cadmium in certain areas of Araçá and Barium in TEBAR. The latter is probably related to the terminal\'s water production. In both outfalls, it was observed a significant correlation between the trace elements in the live A. tepida\'s tests and the sediment, which suggests that the dead foraminifera are more susceptible to diagenical bias. In TEBAR the correlations observed were significative and positive among the elements Co, Cr, Mn and Pb present in the sediments and the trace elements of the stained tests. In the Araçá outfall, only the Cr levels correlate significative and positively with the levels found in the tinged tests. This shows that sediment composition influences the intracelular reactions in the forminifera, which reflected in the exoskeleton\'s building. Given the above, the results of this study brought up new questions that allowed to infer that sea water depuration at both outfalls, as well as at sewage treatment plant, in TEBAR was not sufficient to dilute and/or remove the nutrient content, the organic matter and major and trace elements of the sewage.

Avaliação da aplicação associada dos dados de δ18O e da razão Mg/Ca de foraminíferos como uma ferramenta paleoceanográfica / Evalution of the associated applicability of ?18O and Mg/Ca ratio data in foraminifera as a paleoceanographic tool

Perretti, Adriana Rodrigues 01 April 2011 (has links)
The goal of this study is to evaluate the associated use of the proxies ?18O and Mg/Ca, both analyzed in foraminifera tests. ?18O and trace metals analyses were performed in order to achieve this purpose on samples of planktonic (G. ruber and G. sacculifer) and benthic (Cibicidoides spp., C. corpulentus, Uvigerina spp. and H. elegans) species of foraminifera from two cores from South Atlantic. Despite of the fact that the proxies used on this study present distinct fits within the species they correlate very well, being possible to estimate the values of temperature, ?18OSW and ?18OLocal. Based on the temperature estimated by Mg/Ca it was possible to identify a negative anomaly of -1,5 ± 0,2 °C between the LGM and HL, meanwhile a positive anomaly of 1,7 ± 0,4 °C was observed in the deep waters for the same period. The ?18OSW data estimated by temperature and ?18O indicate an oscilation of 1,0 ± 0,1 ? and 2,0 ± 0,2 ? for planktonic and benthic species between the LGM and the HL. Based on the literature value for the ice volume signal (~1,2 ?) the superficial waters of the study area indicated a very low salinity oscilation, opposite to the high salinity oscillation in the deep waters. The ?18OLocal estimatives exhibited a very weak salinity oscillation between LGM and HL in the superficial waters (~0,1 ?), providing a much more strong oscilation in the deep waters (1,0 ± 0,3 ?). The salinity increase during the LGM in the deep waters establish the validity of the positive temperature anomaly observed in this study, since the density of the deep water needs to be adequate to maintain the water column stratification.
