Subcritical and supercritical dynamics of incompressible flow over miniaturized roughness elements / Dynamique souscritique et supercritique d’un écoulement incompressible autourd’éléments de micro-rugositéBucci, Michele Alessandro 04 December 2017 (has links)
This thesis aims at highlighting the limits of passive control by usingminiaturized roughness elements. The flow topology induced by the presence ofcylindrical roughness and miniaturized vertex generators has been studied to uncover asymptotic and short time dynamics. Supercritical bifurcations has been investigated by means of global stability analysis. Subcritical bifurcation are induced by transient growth of the energy or receptivity of stable global modes. 3D optimal forcing structures are extracted to figure out the spatial distribution linked to the resonant pulsation. Perturbed direct numerical simulation reveals the pivotal role of the less steady global mode in the non-linear unsteadiness. A detailed analysis of the flowstructures is provided and linked to the involved linear mechanisms. Global feature of the eigenmode are linked to the presence of the separation zone behind the cylindrical roughness. By using miniaturized vortex generators the separation zone is suppressed and no isolated global modes are present. The flow dynamics turns out to be driven not only by roughness Reynolds number and geometrical aspect ratio but also by the ratio between the roughness height and the boundary layer thickens.

Ajustement optimal des paramètres de forçage atmosphérique par assimilation de données de température de surface pour des simulations océaniques globales / Optimal adjustment of atmospheric forcing parameters for long term simulations of the global ocean circulation.Meinvielle, Marion 17 January 2012 (has links)
Sea surface temperature (SST) is more accurately observed from space than near-surface atmospheric variables and air-sea fluxes. But ocean general circulation models for operational forecasting or simulations of the recent ocean variability use, as surface boundary conditions, bulk formulae which do not directly involve the observed SST. In brief, models do not use explicitly in their forcing one of the best observed ocean surface variable, except when assimilated to correct the model state. This classical approach presents however some inconsistency between the “assimilated” solution of the model and the “forced” one. The objective of this research is to develop in a realistic context a new assimilation scheme based on statistical methods that will use SST satellite observations to constrain (within observation-based air-sea flux uncertainties) the surface forcing function (surface atmospheric input variables) of ocean circulation simulations. The idea is to estimate a set of corrections for the atmospheric input data from ERAinterim reanalysis that cover the period from 1989 to 2007. We use a sequential method based on the SEEK filter, with an ensemble experiment to evaluate parameters uncertainties. The control vector is extended to correct forcing parameters (air temperature, air humidity, downward longwave and shortwave radiations, precipitation, wind velocity). Over experiments of one month duration, we assimilate observed monthly SST products (Hurrel, 2008) and SSS seasonal climatology (Levitus, 1994) data, to obtain monthly parameters corrections that we can use in a free run model This study shows that we can thus produce in a realistic case, on a global scale, and over a large time period, an optimal flux correction set that improves the forcing function of an ocean model using sea surface observations.

Palavras-chave: iluminação artificial, crisântemo, uso racional de energia elétrica / Abstract: The type of artificial illumination employed for chrysanthemum cultivation in greenhouses to induce photoperiod effect will determine its growing rate as well as the energy consumption. Incandescent filament is currently employed for artificial illumination in chrysanthemum nursery to induce photoperiod effect. Nowadays new illumination technology is being tested aiming energy consumption reduction. The application of illumination based on electrical discharge in sodium or mercury vapor, as well as tubular or integrated compact fluorescent bulbs in chrysanthemum cultivation is identified as the objective of this research work. The experimental part of this work was carried out in a commercial greenhouse model employing five chrysanthemum variety as Papiro, Lindy White, Mona Lisa Rose, Euro Speedy and Stateman during winter and summer period. Parameters employed to the study variety behavior included: production per area, fresh matter weight, presence of flower sprouts and moisture content. The parameters known as electrical variables, like consumption, demand and power factor, together with the treatment energy efficiency index were used to analyze the employed illumination technologies and light bulbs type. Results showed differences between weight of fresh flowers and moisture content for the flowers variety under consideration. Productivity per unit area was noticed to be larger for discharge technology when compared with filament bulbs, for both varieties being tested. The lowest flower sprout occurrence was associated to the discharge technology with the exception of the variety Stateman produced with incandescent bulbs of 100 W in the winter plot. The unique exception related to discharge technology was associated to the White 23W Integrated Compact Fluorescent bulb yielding 2.4% of flower sprouts compared with 0% of other bulb types associated to the production of the variety Euro Speedy. It was noticed from the results that the yellow integrated compact fluorescent bulbs (23W) exhibited lower maximum demand as well as an average energy consumption of 75.51% when compared to incandescent filament bulb type (100W) which is currently employed by the chrysanthemum growers.

Ecology of marine turtles under climate changeStokes, Kimberley Laura January 2014 (has links)
Climate change threatens to disrupt biological systems around the globe, sparking debate over natural capacity for adaptation in a fragmented landscape. Marine turtles are evolutionarily ancient and have survived millions of years of prehistoric climate change, but are threatened by the rapidity of modern warming and a history of severe overexploitation that has left most populations depleted. This thesis explores a nesting aggregation of the green turtle (Chelonia mydas) in northern Cyprus, where a longitudinal programme of both intensive and extensive monitoring enables insight into individual and population level parameters and processes. Nesting on the two coastlines covered by this project is in the early stages of recovery, possibly in response to exhaustive nest protection efforts over the last twenty years. Saturation tagging at one key site allows us to confirm that recruitment of new breeders is an important driver of this trend, and that average clutch frequency has remained stable around three nests per female per year, validating nest-count derived abundance estimates at a regional scale. Concern has been raised, however, regarding recent changes in fishing practices which are impacting the local juvenile neritic phase, which may have a lagged effect on the recovery of this nesting population. A collaborative tracking effort including all other countries with major nesting in the Mediterranean allows us to identify major foraging grounds for this species, with two hotspots accounting for >50% of tracked individuals, as well as coastal and pelagic seasonal corridors of high use. Bycatch levels and mortality rates for turtles in these key areas are largely unknown and should be prioritised for investigation. Hatchling sex ratios from the main study beach are extremely female-biased (estimated 97% female for the twenty year period 1993-2012). A 1oC rise in average incubation temperatures threatens near complete hatchling feminisation on this beach, whilst a 2oC rise could reduce hatch success to less than 50%. Thermal effects on hatchling morphometrics are evident, with a 1oC rise in temperature reducing average length, width and weight by 1%, 2% and 3% respectively. More favourable incubation conditions were found early in the season, in deeper nests laid by larger females, and on beaches of lighter sand. In contrast, adult sex ratios at the main site are male-biased, posing questions regarding sex-specific survival rates and optimal hatchling sex ratios. A phenological shift towards earlier nesting is demonstrated for the first time in this species, and could potentially ameliorate warming effects. Carry-over climate forcing effects from the foraging ground influence the breeding frequency of individuals, driving population level responses in annual magnitude of nesting. This work emphasises the utility and necessity of long-term individual-based monitoring programmes in elucidating population trends and climate responses in iteroparous species with non-annual breeding.

The objective of this thesis is to analyze the influence of moist processes on mid-latitude cyclones, and specifically the tracks of cyclones and the formation of strong winds near the surface. These researches have been made using idealized simulations of the mesoscale model Méso-NH. The first study focused on the effects of moist processes on the motion perpendicularly to the zonal jet axis, poleward. The main mechanism explaining this motion involves the nonlinear advection of the surface cyclone by the upper-level cyclonic and anticyclonic perturbations located on both sides of the surface cyclone. In the presence of humidity, the upper-level anticyclonic anomaly strengthens due to the latent heat release in the ascent zones, and the poleward motion is reinforced. The eastward motion of the cyclone is also reinforced with the inclusion of moist processes. The second study focuses on the formation of near-surface strong winds which are triggered by the so-called " sting-jets ". These jets correspond to descending air masses from the mid-troposphere near the cloud head down to the top of the boundary layer, and can trigger devastating surface winds. In the case where synoptic perturbations are initialized south of the baroclinic zonal jet, the bent-back warm front phase occurs, whereas when they are initialized on the zonal jet axis, the surface cyclone has a less active warm front. Thus, the formation of a sting-jet only occurs in the first case, and with a high vertical resolution. It is the geostrophic forcing in a globally neutral environment relative to conditional symmetric instability which facilitates the airstreams descent and the formation of the sting-jet.

The carbon-climate system response at high amounts of cumulative carbon emissions, and the role of non-CO2 forcing and observational constraints on cumulative carbon budgetsTokarska, Katarzyna B. 28 July 2017 (has links)
The long-term global mean temperature depends on the total amount of anthropogenic CO2 emitted. This direct link between temperature and cumulative CO2 emissions has implications for policymakers, as the cumulative emissions framework identifies the total amount of carbon that can be emitted, referred to as a cumulative carbon budget, that is consistent with reaching stabilization of the global mean temperature at desired levels, such as 1.5 °C or 2.0 °C warming above the pre-industrial level. This dissertation is a compilation of three studies that explore the relationship between warming and cumulative carbon emissions at high amounts of total carbon emitted (Project I; Chapter 2), its sensitivity to non-CO2 forcing (Project II; Chapter 3), and constraining the climate model responses with observations, in order to provide more accurate estimates of the carbon budget consistent with 1.5 °C warming above the pre-industrial level (Project III; Chapter 4). A joint summary of the key findings from each project, and their significance, is presented in Chapter 5. / Graduate / 2018-05-29

Climate impact of the sustainable use of forest biomass in energy and material system : a life cycle perspectiveHaus, Sylvia January 2018 (has links)
Human society releases greenhouse gas emissions to the atmosphere while providing housing, heat, mobility and industrial production. Man-made greenhouse gas emissions are the main causes of climate change, coming mainly from burning fossil fuels and land-use changes. Sustainably managed forests play an important role in climate change mitigation with the prospect of sustainably providing essential materials and services as part of a low-carbon economy, both through the substitution of fossil-intensive fuels and material and through their potential to capture and store carbon in the long-term perspective. The overall aim of this thesis was to develop a methodology under a life cycle perspective to assess the climate impact of the sustainable use of forest biomass in bioenergy and material systems. To perform this kind of analysis a methodological framework is needed to accurately compare the different biological and technological systems with the aim to minimize the net carbon dioxide emissions to the atmosphere and hence the climate impact. In such a comparison, the complete energy supply chains from natural resources to energy end-use services has to be considered and are defined as the system boundaries. The results show that increasing biomass production through more intensive forest management or the usage of more productive tree species combined with substitution of non-wood products and fuels can significantly reduce global warming. The biggest single factor causing radiative forcing reduction was using timber to produce wood material to replace energy-intensive construction materials such as concrete and steel. Another very significant factor was replacing fossil fuels with forest residues from forest thinning, harvest, wood processing, and post-use wood products. The fossil fuel that was replaced by forest biomass affected the reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, with carbon-intensive coal being most beneficial to replace. Over the long term, an active and sustainable management of forests, including their use as a source for wood products and bioenergy allows the greatest potential for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
