RESISTÊNCIA À FRATURA DE DENTES COM DIFERENTES GRAUS DE FRAGILIZAÇÃO RADICULAR RECONSTRUÍDOS COM OU SEM PINOS ACESSÓRIOS / FRACTURE STRENGTH OF WEAKENED TEETH RESTORED WITH OR WITHOUT ACCESSORY POSTS.

Rosa, Ricardo Abreu da 11 March 2010 (has links)
At this work, fracture strength of bovine teeth with different weakened root levels and rebuilded with glass fiber posts used in a unique way or associated with accessory glass fiber posts was evaluated. Fifty bovine mandibular incisors with similar mesio-distal and bucco-lingual dimensions were used at the study. They were sectioned at 14 mm from the apex and the pulp was removed. Teeth were fixed in acrylic resin blocks, then they were allocated into 5 groups: G1) teeth with normal root canal enlargement and glass fiber post Exacto # 3 (2 mm cervical diameter and 1.1 mm apical diameter (control group); G2) medium root canal enlargement and glass fiber post Exacto # 3; G3) medium root canal enlargement and glass fiber post Exacto # 3 associated with two accessory glass fiber post; G4) wide root canal enlargement and glass fiber post Exacto # 3; G5) wide root canal enlargement and glass fiber post Exacto # 3 associated with five accessory glass fiber posts. Specimens from group 1 were prepared with burns # 3 from Exacto Kit (apical diameter: 1.1 mm and 10 mm diameter: 2 mm) at 10 mm of depth. Specimens from group 2 and 3 were prepared with the same bur and depth than group 1, however the cervical 5 mm were prepared with diamonds burs 3018 HL (diameter 2.9 mm). Specimens from group 4 and 5 were prepared with the same burs of groups 3 and 4, nevertheless remained just 1 mm of dentinal thickness at cervical 5 mm and measured with digital caliper. The post luting process was made with Scotch Bond Multipurpose and RelyX ARC. Resin composite cores with Filtek Z-350 and metallic crowns were made. The specimens were stored at distillated water during 72 hours at 370C until use at fracture strength test. A universal testing machine (Emic) was used and the specimens were loaded at 1350 with the teeth long axis at crosshead speed 0.5 mm/min. The results did not indicated difference statistically significant among the groups (ANOVA 1-factor, α = 0.05). All the groups showed predominant failure patterns favorable to remaining teeth.

Fiber Orientation Effects on the Fracture and Flexural Toughness of Extruded Fiber Reinforced Concrete for Additive Manufacturing

Jeon, Byeonguk 21 August 2023 (has links)
In this study, the mechanical properties of a fiber-reinforced cementitious composite (FRCC) were derived for specimens fabricated using two different methods of casting: conventional cast construction and pump-driven extrusion. Through the extrusion process, fibers are more likely to be oriented along the length of the member being cast and will therefore be more efficient since they are aligned parallel to the tensile stresses produced in flexure testing. The FRCC employed 0.5% and 1% polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber reinforcement by volume. The flexural properties of FRCC were determined using four-point bend tests according to a modified ASTM C1609. Calculations included the modulus of rupture (MOR) and flexural toughness based on load-deflection curves. The fracture properties of FRCC were determined by using three-point bend tests on the same design but having notched beams using the two-parameter fracture model (TPFM). Calculations included the Mode I critical stress intensity factor (KIC), the critical crack tip opening displacement (CTODc), the strain energy release rate (GIC), and the total fracture energy (GF). The results show that enhanced ductility and post-peak behavior are achieved in concrete to which fibers have been added, as has been demonstrated in other studies, although this study further demonstrated how preferential fiber alignment produced via an extrusion can enhance fracture and flexural properties of cementitious composites. / Master of Science / Fiber-reinforced cementitious composite (FRCC) is a type of cementitious composite that contains fibers that are added to the mixture to improve its strength, durability, and ductility. One of the key factors of FRCC that affects its mechanical properties is the fiber alignment. Extrusion can be used as a method to preferentially align the fibers in order to maximize the benefit of fibers. Extruded FRCC can be pumped through a nozzle, making fiber alignment a convenient option for construction projects where traditional concrete placement methods would be difficult. One of the main benefits of aligning fibers in pump-extruded FRCC is that it can improve cementitious composites' fracture and flexural toughness. Fracture toughness refers to the ability of a material to resist crack propagation, while flexural toughness refers to its ability to withstand bending. By adding fibers to the mixture, the fibers act as reinforcement and help to distribute stress more evenly throughout the material, leading to increased strength and ductility. Furthermore, the alignment of fibers within the mixture also plays a critical role in the fracture and flexural strength of the material. Research has shown that when fibers are aligned in a specific direction, they can improve the tensile strength of the concrete and decrease the likelihood of crack propagation. This can be especially useful in structures that are exposed to seismic activity or long-lasting heavy loads. Overall, the use of pump extrusion-based method as a fiber alignment for FRCC can significantly improve the fracture and flexural strength of concrete. This makes it an attractive option for construction projects that require strong and durable members.

Investigation Of Low Temperature Cracking In Asphalt Concrete Pavement

Qadir, Adnan 01 December 2010 (has links) (PDF)
In this study, low temperature cracking of asphalt concrete is investigated based on a laboratory experimental program including the design variables of aggregate type, gradation, asphalt content, binder grading, binder modification, and the experimental variables of cooling rate, and specimen size. The design of experiment is proposed according to the fractional factorial design principles to reduce the required number of test specimens. Mix designs are performed according to the Superpave mix design guidelines using materials obtained from the Turkish General Directorate of High-ways. In the course of this study, a test setup for thermal stress restrained specimen test for asphalt concrete is developed and used successfully to test a number of as-phalt concrete beam specimens. The same setup is also used for measuring the glass transition temperatures to obtain various thermo-volumetric properties of mixtures. Statistical methods are used to identify the effect of experimental variables on frac-ture strength, fracture temperature and other dependent variables obtained from the testing program. Statistical models are also developed to predict the fracture strength, fracture temperature and other thermo-volumetric properties of mixtures. Results of analyses show that aggregate type, binder modification, and asphalt content significantly affect both the fracture strength and fracture temperature of asphalt concrete. While the glass transition temperature is affected by only aggregate type, coefficients of contraction before and after the glass transition temperature are not influenced by any of the experimental variables. The results of this study provide an important basis to prevent low temperature cracking in asphalt concrete pavements.

En pilotstudie / Fatigue of implant-supported fixed dental prosthesis restorations with a cantilever and two different fixture diameters. A pilot study

Yassin, Ahmed, Al-Haideri, Mohammed January 2023 (has links)
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate how implant-supported fixed dental prosthesis (FDP) restorations with a cantilever at abutment level resist fatigue by dynamic loading and thermocycling depending on the fixture diameters.   Material and method: The study involved two groups with three specimens in each group, based on the diameter of the fixture, 3.5 or 5.0 mm (D3.5 and D5.0). The specimens consisted of two ASTRA TECH platforms, either 3.5 mm or 5.0 mm, 20°Uni Abutments, and a standardized milled CoCr FDP at abutment level with a cantilever. A mounting jig was designed and 3D printed. The specimens underwent a dynamic fatigue test with thermocycling, 5°C and 55°C, and a 250 N load at a frequency of 1.5 Hz for maximum 6×10⁵ cycles, until the specimen either fractured or displayed visible deformation. Fractured specimens were examined under microscope.    Results: In group D3.5, one specimen survived 600,000 cycles without loosening or fracturing, one displayed screw loosening, and one screw fracturing. In group D5,0, two specimens displayed screw fracturing and one screw/abutment loosening.   Conclusions:  · Implant-supported FDP restorations with a cantilever at abutment level tend to resist fatigue better with a larger fixture diameter than with a smaller fixture diameter. · Fixtures with a diameter of 5.0 mm show higher tendency for screw fracturing and loosening compared to fixtures with 3.5 mm.  · More extensive studies regarding implant-supported FDP restorations with cantilever at abutment level and different fixture diameters are required to confirm the results.

Fracture strength of three-unit fixed partial denture in lithium disilicate, press versus milled, in-vitro study

Ismail Ahmad, Hogir, Khazal, Noor January 2019 (has links)
Aim: The aim of this study was to compare fracture load and fracture mode of three-unit fixed partial dentures, made in lithium disilicate when the FDPs are made with pressing technique versus milled with a CAD/CAM system.Hypothesis: Pressing technique is better suited with regards to fracture load since milling of lithium disilicate blocks can result in defects and tension build up in the material, leaving the material more prone to chipping/micro-abrasions on the surface that could propagate and thus affecting the fracture load. P-value set to p ≤0.05.Material and methods: 40 FDPs where manufactured with pressing technique versus milled with a CAD/CAM system in each group. Furthermore, each group where subdivided depending on the anatomy. The FDPs thereafter underwent an artificial ageing process consisting of thermocycling and preloading. After the artificial aging process the FDPs were subjected to load to fracture, where the statistical data was collected and analyzed. Also, the fracture mode was observed and analyzed. Results: There was no significant difference regarding the fracture strength between the full anatomy groups. There was also no significant difference regarding the fracture strength between the core-design groups. The hypothesis was therefore rejected. Conclusion: There is no significant difference with regards to how much load is required to fracture FDPs made through pressing technique compared to FDPs made through the use of CAD/CAM technique. There is a clear pattern regarding the fracture patterns, however a conclusion can’t be drawn considering the sample size.

Impacto da cavidade endodôntica conservativa no preparo e comportamento biomecânico de pré-molares superiores restaurados com diferentes materiais / Impact of the conservative endodontic cavity on the biomechanical preparation and behavior of maxillary premolars restored with different materials

Pereira, Rodrigo Dantas 16 May 2018 (has links)
A cavidade endodôntica de acesso não alterou o comportamento biomecânico de pré-molares superiores, no entanto, CEC apresentaram material obturador remanescente após tratamento endodôntico e maior percentual de espaços vazios no material obturador / The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of the conservative endodontic cavity in the biomechanical preparation with different systems and in the biomechanical behavior of maxillary premolars restored with different restorative materials. Ninety maxillary premolars with root bifurcation in the cervical or middle third were selected and scanned in microcomputed tomography for the determination of two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) parameters of root canals and length and volume data of the root and crown. From these data, the specimens were distributed according to the endodontic access cavity: control (higid) (n=10), conventional endodontic cavity (CC) (n=40) and conservative endodontic cavity (CEC) (n=40); and according the biomechanical preparation system (n=10): Protaper Universal (PTU), Reciproc (RP), Reciproc Blue (RB) and Hiflex EDM (HEDM). CC and CEC were performed using 1014 HL and Endo Z drills and E7D ultrasonic insert, followed by a new micro tomographic examination to quantify the removed dental tissue. The teeth were prepared with the PTU, RP, RB and HEDM systems following the manufacturers\' guidelines. After the biomechanical preparation, a new scanning was performed to evaluate the 2D and 3D root canal parameters changes and a new randomization was performed for the restorative material (n=10): control (temporary restorative material), conventional composite resin, bulk fill regular composite resin and resin composite bulk fill flow associated with conventional composite resin. The specimens were filled with epoxy resin-based sealer and single cone, and sealed with temporary restorative cement. After seven days the teeth were restored according to their respective groups with conventional composite resin using the incremental technique, composite resin bulk fill regular using a single increment and single increment of composite resin bulk fill flow with conventional composite resin layer. New scanning was performed to analyze the restorative material and presence of voids, followed by the inclusion for periodontal ligament simulation and fracture strength test and determination of fracture pattern. Three-dimensional models of endodontic access conditions and restorative material were generated for finite element analysis. The biomechanical preparation and biomechanical behavior data were submitted to paired T test, ANOVA and Tukey test and chi-square test (=0.05). The endodontic access cavities and biomechanical preparation systems presented statistically similar values for 2D and 3D data, however, it was observed that CC showed a greater centralization of the root canal compared to CEC. The RB and HEDM systems presented greater centralization compared to the PTU system. The Protaper system presented a higher percentage of untouched walls in CEC. A lower percentage of restorative material was observed in CEC (78.7%) compared to CC (96.3%), showing the presence of filling material and greater percentage of empty spaces in CEC. The values of fracture strength and failure pattern were statistically similar for the control group and experimental groups. The evaluated groups presented similar behavior in finite element analysis, with a higher stress concentration in the palatal cusp compared to the vestibular cusp and higher stress in the main sulcus region and marginal ridges. It can be concluded that the CEC had a negative impact on the centralization of the biomechanical preparation, and that PTU promoted greater deviation and percentage of untouched walls. The endodontic access cavity did not alter the biomechanical behavior of maxillary premolars, however, CEC had remaining filling material after endodontic treatment and greater percentage of voids

Desenvolvimento de um equipamento para avaliação da susceptibilidade à fragilização por hidrogênio / Development of an equipment to evaluate the susceptibility to hydrogen assisted cracking

Martiniano, Guilherme Antonelli 28 December 2016 (has links)
Hydrogen embrittlement of metallic materials has been a frequent problem in different industry sectors. Because it is the smallest existing atom, hydrogen diffuses into the microstructure of metallic materials, resulting in internal mechanical stresses that may eventually lead to a catastrophic failure. The most common methods available to analyze this phenomenon are time consuming and expensive. For this reason, it is desired to develop a test method that does not have such disadvantages. In this work it is presented the development of an equipment to rapidly evaluate the susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement (SHE) of the metallic materials using the rising step load (RSL) bend testing in assisted environment. This equipment has a great advantage over the other evaluation methods of SHE, which is the shortest test time to have representative results. The validation of the infrastructure was performed by testing bars without notches to, whose measured mechanical stress was compared with that returned by the RSL software. In addition, the measurement uncertainty related to the calculation of the mechanical stress in the sample was calculated. The tests to verify the performance of the RSL equipment were carried out on samples of steel AISI 4140 heat treated to a hardness of 40HRC. The effect of the cathodic potential applied to notched bars of AISI 4140 on the SHE was evaluated. The results obtained in the validation phase of the equipment showed errors lower than 1%. The results showed also an increase in SHE with increasing material hardness indicating that there is a high sensitivity to the SHE with respect to the hardness of the sample. The tests carried out using cathodic potential variation showed a direct relationship between this parameter and the SHE of the sample, with saturation of the SHE at -1.1 VAg/AgCl. / Dissertação (Mestrado)
