Success within Front End of Innovation- Recommendations for enabling creation anddevelopment of ideas at Atlas Copco,Construction Tools / Framgång inom förutveckling- Rekommendationer för att möjliggöraskapandet och utvecklingen av idéer hosAtlas Copco, Construction Tools

Ahlgren, Hedvig, Landström, Moa January 2017 (has links)
Several researchers talk about how the greatest source of competitive advantage is a firm's capability to be innovative, and it is a fact that economic growth is built upon innovations and ideas. Ideas belong to the early activities of innovation processes, which can be defined as he front end of innovation (FEI). FEI has clearly been stated to be crucial for the innovative performance of firms, but yet an area which many companies often lack of handling in a structured way. What need to be considered for a successful FEI has laid the foundation of this thesis. The aim with the thesis is to investigate what are key success factors and common pitfalls for processes and activities within the FEI, and how these can be handled by management. The thesis is also investigating how ideas and innovations can be measured in order to take the right decisions for different types of ideas by a suitable level of decision-makers. The thesis was carried out as a case study at Construction Tools division at Atlas Copco who had expressed the same demand as many companies appear to struggle with: a structured FEI. The goal with the thesis is therefore to propose recommendations towards a successful FEI, including structures, methods, and tools for the case company. In order to do so, twelve semistructured qualitative interviews with internal employees followed by ten semi-structured qualitative interviews with external companies in different industries and sizes were conducted. Along with the case study, a literature study was also performed. The collected data were analyzed and benchmarked towards the literature and the research questions, which resulted in several conclusions which are both general as well as organizational specific for the case company. These are amongst others: a structured innovation portfolio management including clear budget allocation and innovation strategy; enabling a creative culture; separating staff for conducting work regarding disruptive ideas; involvement by top management in the development of ideas.

A Business Modelling Framework for the Front End of Innovation. : Customising a Guiding Material for an Early Phase of the Innovation Process for a Swedish Fintech Company.

Almqvist, Marcus, Lundberg, Charlotta January 2019 (has links)
The Swedish Fintech company that is subject to this thesis has proposed a process through which all new ideas should go through before entering the development funnel, called the ‘Proof-of-Concept-process’. Today, there exists no material that helps and guides the idea owner through one of the more extensive phases of that process. The purpose of this thesis is to develop a material for this phase. The material is developed through a literature review and qualitative interviews. The topics included in the literature review are: ‘Innovation’, ‘Uncertainty’, ‘Front End of Innovation’ and ‘Business Modelling’. Semi-structured qualitative interviews were performed separately with three out of four members of the top management team. Continuous discussions with the industrial supervisor facilitated the development of the framework. The result consists of two parts, (1) the results from the interviews with the management team which aims to lay the foundation for the requirement specification on which components the framework should contain, and (2) a framework for how business modelling can be done at this phase of the innovation process. The result is a material that uses the graphical branding of the company so that it can be treated as an internal document. An unbranded version of the result is presented in this thesis. The framework is presented together with a deeper analysis of the separate building blocks that form its structure, together with suggestions on techniques that aims to help the user of the material. We argue that the result is a business modelling framework that considers recommendations for how to handle the FEI, and that regards theory on business modelling as well as interviews with managers at the subject company to establish what techniques such a framework should include. Further, the result is based on a wide variety of literature and authors. Concluding, we argue that the result can be considered a bridge between two relatively young research areas ‘Front end of Innovation’ and ‘Business Modelling’ with its primary application at one specific company.

Low Noise Front End Signal Transport Design for L-band Phased Array Receivers

Ammermon, Spencer M. 15 December 2022 (has links)
RF receiver improvements in size, weight, power, and sensitivity are constant goals in the wireless communications community. The combination of phased array antenna systems with high speed analog to digital converters helps engineers meet these goals, because many of the analog components and tasks found in a traditional receive chain are moved into the digital domain. Although the hard work of signal reception is moved into digital signal processing, digital receivers rely on a high performance analog front end to properly condition a signal before analog to digital conversion. In this thesis, two RF front ends are developed for direct sampling L-band phased array receiver applications, which comprise the two main chapters of this document. Both RF front ends are developed on low cost, quick turnaround time PCB materials. Results for system gain and noise figure are presented for each front end. First, the development of an L-band analog front end for a direct sampling GPS phased array receiver is described, with particular attention to gain and noise figure in context of the full system link budget. The RF front end for the GPS phased array receiver meets design expectations by achieving a system gain of 65 dB and a system noise figure of 1.5 dB at the GPS L1 frequency. Second, the redesign and improvement of the Advanced L-band Phased Array Camera (ALPACA) RF over fiber transmitter is documented. New mechanical and electrical design requirements were brought on from the change of target observatory from the collapsed Arecibo obervatory in Puerto Rico, to the Greenbank Observatory in Greenbank, West Virginia. The ALPACA RF over fiber signal transport system with the redesigned transmitter reaches the design expectation of a system noise temperature contribution less than 1 K. Average gain of the RF over fiber system is 49 dB, gain differences between channels are less than 2 dB, and isolation between channels is better than 35 dB. Under optimal conditions, the noise figure of the RF over fiber link is 2.4 dB (213.3 K), which allows for up to 11 dB of attenuation to be added to any given transmit channel to level the gain across all 138 ALPACA channels.

Critical success factors for selecting ideas in front-end of SME

Residegan, Katayun January 2016 (has links)
Front-end activities prior to the product and process development have been pointed out by studies to be an essential part in development of new products and processes. Here selecting ideas is found to be route cause of success and failures of the new product and process development outcomes. The existing studies concentrate on larger companies, where tools and processes often are not fitting into the SME which have different needs and settings and lack attention regarding effective and sustainable processes in the front-end. This thesis addresses the need for a more detailed view of the most important factors that influence selecting innovative ideas in SME, with a purpose to address these factors and improve them in the front end process of these companies.  For this, by means of extensive literature study on SME, front-End and idea selection theories, a theoretical model for critical success factors for idea selection is developed, containing 21 factors. These factors are divided in main aspects of Shared vision, Innovation strategy, Leadership and management, Appropriate, structure and organization, Key individuals. Subsequently this model is tested in a case study of Bioteria Technologies AB in which the company’s idea selection process is analysed with the model.  The empirical analysis and discussions resulted in learning about the status of the company against the factors from which propositions follow.  The outcome of the study is a model that can be used for addressing what the challenges and opportunities are for the SME related to improving or adopting an idea selection phase.
