Bedell Smith and functionalist dilemmas

Urseth, Leif H. January 1900 (has links)
Doctor of Philosophy / Department of History / Jack M. Holl / Donald J. Mrozek / General Walter Bedell Smith is the subject of this dissertation. It examines his career as Eisenhower's chief of staff from a functionalist perspective. Functionalism as a school of thought emphasizes the organic nature of social institutions, the importance of improvisation while framing solutions to problems, and the necessity of producing predictable results. In practice, the US Army and Smith applied functionalism in a restricted way, but conceived of the General Staff as the "brain of the army." While working for General Marshall in the War Department General Staff and later as General Eisenhower's chief of staff, General Smith met his responsibilities with respect to order, cohesion and objectives. Two general conditions complicated Smith's role at Eisenhower's headquarters: first, the burgeoning size of the staff made it difficult for Smith to manage by means of direct supervision and still preserve a measure of initiative among staff members; second, Smith's poor health and choler sometimes hindered his ability to adopt means that were consistent with the organic aspect of functionalism. In Washington, Algiers and London, Bedell Smith gained notoriety as a "hatchetman" who did his superior's dirty work. His ugly reputation was fitting in some ways, but undeserved in others. His achievements have been underestimated. Smith was the firm defender of the Eisenhower's prerogatives. Among British colleagues, he was a disciple of cooperation and diplomacy. He was intelligent, orderly and functionalist in the sense that his decisiveness and willingness to accept responsibility achieved quick and predictable results. Smith's understanding of principal issues and his grasp of details earned the trust and respect of colleagues. He acted out of duty, not "natural" meanness. The traits of a "hatchetman" - feared and detested by some - were the distinguishing features that won favor from his superiors, Marshall and Eisenhower.

The perils of parsimony. "National culture" as red herring?

Macfadyen, Leah P. January 2008 (has links)
This paper discusses the ways in which Hofstede’s model of ‘dimensions of (‘national’) culture’ – and similar models developed in a functionalist paradigm – are problematically used to classify people. It briefly surveys critiques of Hofstede’s research method, but focusses on the dangers of attempting to develop models of culture within a functionalist paradigm. Although such models may be parsimonious and rapidly applied, I argue that they are a poor fit for CATaC investigations of the dynamic and reciprocal interactions between human cultures and technology. Instead, I contend, we must abandon this paradigm, and embrace methodologies that permit meaningfully explorations of the multiple and dynamic conditions influencing the field of cultural practices in human societies. I discuss the merits of ‘articulation’ as theory and method, and offer Hacking’s theory of “dynamic nominalism” as one example.

The Foundations of Aristotle's Functionalist Approach to Political Theory

Welle, Nathan 27 September 2013 (has links)
Aristotle’s articulation of a correct state is inherently socially hierarchical. This has led many scholars to view the functionalist approach as being at odds with the inherent equality of persons that is taken for granted in contemporary political theory. My thesis therefore aims to offer a defence of functionalist theory, demonstrating that it can be formulated to respect the functioning of every individual. In Chapter 1, I examine the key Aristotelian concept of natural justice. In order to draw out the subtleties of natural justice, I compare it with Cicero’s articulation of natural law. In Chapter 2, I compare and contrast Martha Nussbaum’s and Aristotle’s articulations of political philosophy. In Chapter 3, I examine the Aristotelian notion of friendship by considering the work of Cooper and Bentley. I argue against most contemporary theorists that Aristotle’s basic understanding of human relationships is altruistic. / Graduate / 0422

Omvärdering av funktionalistiska hus: En passiv energieffektivitet och dagsljusanalys med BIM-verktyg / Re-evaluation of Functionalist Houses: A Passive Energy Efficiency and Daylight Analysis Using BIM Tools

Sherzad, Rafiullah, Imamzada, Awrangzib January 2021 (has links)
Western Europe Functionalism ideas are born of the need for scientific and technological progress in producing new materials and building technologies.  Today energy efficiency has become one of the most important characteristics of any project, where functionalism reflects well-designed building components. Reducing energy consumption, improving energy efficiency and minimizing greenhouse emission in the building is vital for the planet's survival. This study intends to provide expertise in design and construction disciplines to use the idea concept of Fallingwater and Villa Savoye, functionalist-style buildings, from the golden era of functionalism. This evaluation can help a new generation of designers and architects to improve the passive energy efficiency and daylight of studied concepts, pragmatic and organic. As a case study, the authors simulated and evaluated the energy efficiency of two conventional architecture designs stated above. Energy efficiency and daylight simulation of these functionalist-style buildings were executed using the BIM-based Building Energy Simulation (BES) tool. The indoor temperature variation and the amount of illuminance for each zone were assessed. The result indicates that the main temperature variation (mean air and operative temperature) in both buildings is not suitable for living and some parts of the regularly occupied floor receive too much direct sunlight. Based on the results, some passive energy-saving measures such as improving building orientation, material and shape, window wall ratio (WWR), adding external shading device, window position, and size are suggested to help researchers in the AEC industry in the future reforming process.

LÃia Cruz de Menezes 31 March 2006 (has links)
The study aimed at investigating in which way linguistic expressions of the deontic modality act in a sense of making the audienceâs participation possible in standpoints defended in political speeches and, thus, it was analyzed, under a functionalist theory, forty-four speeches delivered by Representatives at the Lower House of Congress. They discussed the reformation proposal on the welfare state along the first semester of the year 2003. Being understood as the modality related to the axis of the obligation, the deontic modality is, in the present research, as a whole, analyzed under the manifestation of syntactic, semantic and pragmatic-discourse aspects. The research revealed the existence of a relation between the reformation processâ stage, what is directly related to the social pressure over the politicians, and the usage frequency of deontic modalizator expressions. Concerning the linguistc means of the deontic modality expression, one could perceive a high production of the modal verb, standing out the verb âmustâ in the consolidation of obligations. One could also observe a high frequency of the lack of a targetâs explicitation in which the deontic value was established as well as an exclusion strategy in relation to the target, when the latter was specified. The politiciansâ preference for presenting themselves to the public as the ones who took the responsibilities in a task execution, or for making the audience believe that this responsiblity belongs to somebody else, weakens the audienceâs pression over the politicianâs figure, then transferring this responsibility to other individuals or to institutions. For these reasons, in general terms, one can observe the politiciansâ preference for keeping some distance from the established deontic valueâs incidence target.

Sheyla Vieira de Lima Lapa 00 December 2017 (has links)
The Grammar book of the English language is an important material used in the context of learning a foreign language. With this in mind, this research aims at analyzing which approach is used in the sections of explanations and exercises related to modal verbs in English grammars. Six grammars, whose years of publication are 1996, 1999, 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2011, of three renowned publishers that make instructional materials for foreign students of the English language - Oxford, Macmillan, and Pearson Longman- are compared. The appropriateness of the exercises will be verified in relation to the functionalist theory, whose focus is based on use (NEVES, 2015), or to the formalistic theory, that excels the autonomy of the structure in relation to the use of the linguistic structure (LOCK, 1996). The research accounts for the theoretical apparatus of the functionalism (DIK, 1978; GIVÃN, 1995; HALLIDAY, 2004), of the structuralism (SAUSSURE, 1971; CHOMSKY, 1957; BENVENISTE,1989; 1991; LOCK, 1996), of the deontic modality (PALMER, 2001) and of the methods of language teaching (LARSEN-FREEMAN, 2000). As for the methodological procedures, the chapters regarding the modal verbs related to the deontic modality of each one of the six grammars were analyzed. The analysis of each explanatory section and of each section of exercises was made, trying to catch which conception, formalist or functionalist (DIK, 1978), was present. Soon afterwards, we proceeded to the counting of the data and the calculation of the percentages that represent them. As for the explanatory section of the grammars, just one presented an approach more focused on the form (FUCHS & BONNER, 2006), while the other five concentrated their explanations on the linguistic use. With respect to the sections of exercises, four of the grammars (ALEXANDER, 1999; FUCHS & BONNER, 2006; VINCE, 2008; SWAN, WALTER, 2011) had a larger quantity of exercises whose focus was in the structure of the modal verb, without associating it to the communicative aspect. Only two grammars (BLAND, 1996; CONRAD, BIBER, 2009) had an approach concentrated on use in both sections. An amount of 103 explanatory sections and 163 exercises were analyzed. It was noticed that the authors of the six grammar books chosen already indicate signs of the functionalist theory as several aspects that relate to the polysemy of the modal verbs and the specific aspects regarding the use of them (75,72%) are inserted in the explanatory sections. However, in relation to the section of exercises the ones based on form still prevail (62,58%).

Information systems evaluation : a post-dualist interpretation

Whittaker, Louise 14 June 2002 (has links)
This thesis explores the problem of information systems evaluation by conceptualising it as a process in which the manager comes to an understanding about a system. In other words, information systems evaluation is a hermeneutic process. The thesis explicates this notion through an argument that is itself hermeneutic in its development, beginning with the mainstream functionalist view of information systems evaluation, and then considering an interpretive view of IS evaluation, each of which points to one of two stereotypes of IS evaluation and the manager engaged in this process: the objective/rational manager utilising objective/rational methods versus the subjective/political manager engaged in political manoeuvring, utilising objective/rational methods only as ritual or symbolism. Neither of these opposing stereotypes is satisfactory. Instead, this thesis proposes a dialectic view of information systems evaluation, in terms of which, rather than being a decision maker, the manager is in-the-world, evaluating systems in order to get the job done, on the basis of her thrownness in-the-world. This conceptualisation provides an intuitively appropriate account of evaluation on the part of an individual manager, but we must still consider how managers as members of the organisation, reach a common understanding about a system. This they do through a process of organisational learning as encultured knowing, in terms of which a narrative, situated, pragmatic knowledge is most useful in evaluation. Evaluation, in other words, happens in the course of skilful conversation. Such conversation is, however, not always skilful because the organisation is not just a collection of individuals but also a network of power relations. Conversations as generators of meaning are never held outside of power: systems evaluations as conversations cannot take place outside of a regime of truth. A post-dualist view of action as both constituted by and constituting structure, however, suggests that there is always the potential for genuinely hermeneutic and ethical conversation, provided it is both improvisatory and deconstructive. Having understood the requirement for improvisation and deconstruction, it is possible to suggest some heuristics for information systems evaluation based on these ideas. / Dissertation (Phd (Information Technology))--University of Pretoria, 2003. / Informatics / unrestricted

O baixo contínuo segundo Agazzari: tradução de um tratado italiano de música do século XVII através da Abordagem Funcionalista e da Linguística de Corpus / Basso continuo according to Agazzari: translation of an Italian 17th-century music treatise using a functionalist approach and corpus linguistics

Calloni, Tatiane Marques 22 March 2019 (has links)
This paper aims to analyze how corpus linguistics and a functionalist approach can help throughout the process of translating very old texts. Our research is based on the Corpus Linguistics definitions elaborated by Berber Sardinha (2004), Tagnin (2013), and Weisser (2016), among others, and on the principles of the Functionalist Approach developed by Holz-Mäntäri (1984), Reiss and Vermeer (1984), and Nord (1988). The texts to be translated from Italian into Brazilian Portuguese are a letter and a music treatise about basso continuo, written by Agostino Agazzari in the early 17th century, a time when this practice started being developed. We first prepared an initial version of the translation using only conventional reference materials, such as dictionaries and the Internet. Next, we developed a second version with the support of six corpora: four specialized tools we built ourselves, and two references tools available for use online at the Sketch Engine (Lexical Computing) website, which also allowed us to conduct linguistic analysis on all the corpora. We compiled two corpora (one in Brazilian Portuguese and another in Italian) related to the Baroque technique of basso continuo (the main theme of the treatise) by selecting articles, dissertations, theses, and books pertaining to the topic. We also built four corpora (two in Brazilian Portuguese and two in Italian) about basso continuo and musical instruments, using WebBootCaT, a tool found in the Sketch Engine platform that extracts texts from the Internet. Finally, we prepared three glossaries with the most relevant terms in the treatise and their definitions. We sought to guide the entire translation process according to the concepts developed by the functionalist translation approach, reflecting mainly on the function, the target audience, and the temporal dimension of the source and target texts. Corpus analysis allowed us to confirm several hypotheses that had arisen during the first version of the translation, in addition to answering questions and supporting the process of adapting the treatise to contemporary Brazilian Portuguese, despite the difficulty of finding other texts that were representative of the archaic word choice and abbreviations. The stage of searching for terms with the help of Corpus Linguistics required much less time than had been necessary during the first version, due to the features of this methodology for quickly finding and analyzing them in context. A Functionalist Approach, however, was essential as a basis on which to prepare the translation, because it supported the decision-making process by always basing it on the function and target audience of the source and target texts. Translating the letter and treatise contributes to the availability of specialized material aimed at translators, music students, musicologists, and baroque music performers. It also helps spread knowledge of research based on corpora and focused specifically on the field of music theory.
